Is it fixed now? Imageshack links are now automatically translated so they take you through a proxy.
4962  Other / Meta / Re: Imageshack support on Bitcointalk on: July 19, 2012, 04:24:54 AM
Will that even work? Bitcointalk uses https:// for everything, and referrers are never passed when in secure mode like that.

True. It wouldn't work.

The company pays because if it doesn't the victims' protection agencies will attack the company.
4964  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it possible to send BTC to an address that doesn't exist? on: July 17, 2012, 06:59:17 PM
The coins in that address cannot be redeemed.

Only the generation transaction to that address can't be redeemed. Other transactions could be redeemed by Satoshi if he still has the private key.

I bet man, sent it soaring through the roof.

You think the the pw encryption had anything to do with it as such a large amount hit the server at once? Since it is technically new to the software? Or atleast to us? Or new to your hardware?

I doubt it. Hashing one password takes only one-twentieth of a second, and it only happens when someone logs in.

Gosh, to bad the user count got wiped or didn't have a chance to be used today. Would have been exciting to see.

I don't know. sshing into the server always timed out, so I couldn't investigate. My guess is that it was caused by a lot of traffic.
4968  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is blk0001.dat the same everywhere? on: July 16, 2012, 09:53:47 PM
Each person who downloads the block chain from scratch should however get an identical (hash-wise) blk0001.dat from now on though, right?

That seems likely. I'm not sure that blocks are guaranteed to be ordered sequentially in blk0001.dat, though, or that extra data isn't added.
4969  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is blk0001.dat the same everywhere? on: July 16, 2012, 09:44:49 PM
No. Orphan blocks (blocks not in the main chain) are also stored there, and each node is likely to have a different set of orphan blocks.

Is there an easy (Read: free) way to find out? The website linked in the OP charges money to run the test.

So, by this I'm to understand that you will read private messages with probable cause? While I respect your position (and think highly of how you conduct yourself with your responsibilites), I'm definitely not ok with this.

As Maged mentioned, I usually only confirm that a reported PM is accurate. Sometimes I read all of the PMs between the potential scammer and the victim, with the victim's permission. There have been only a few cases where I've read all of a potential scammer's PMs, and they all turned out to be guilty in the end. I don't do it lightly. I never read random PMs; I haven't even read any of Satoshi's PMs, which would undoubtedly be very interesting.

No actual shit, dummy, why wouldn't an administrator have access to PMs? Even if you designed a system that had no easy GUI to do it, you could still read them with a proper commandline SQL query, it just would be a little more difficult. I can't believe you would think otherwise.

It is necessary to use SQL to read them. SMF doesn't have an interface for it.

Did not know. That is worth the switch to SMF default. thanks

Be aware that the other themes aren't supported. They're missing features and some things might be broken.

I just added last edit info to the Bitcoin theme. Hover your cursor over the post time.

Edits aren't recorded when they occur within 5 minutes of the post time. (This has always been the case.)
4974  Economy / Securities / Re: [GLBSE] BDT - 3% weekly interest bond, backed by Bitdaytrade on: July 15, 2012, 05:03:07 PM
Have you used Bitdaytrade much, Meni? Is it stable?

Up to 1,000 bond will be put up for pre-IPO sale. They will be sold at a 5% discount for 0.95 BTC each. This is only available to investors buying at least 100 bonds. Send me a PM to reserve your spot.

What is the purpose of a discount like this?
4975  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How does one send 0.00 BTC ? on: July 15, 2012, 07:41:58 AM
Could you provide an example use case?

It's used in hashcoin's payment channels protocol. Miners will need to do it in 100+ years when blocks have no subsidy (if there are no fees). You can use it for tracking an asset without tying up BTC: the asset is represented by the 0-BTC output, and sending this 0-value output to someone (also valid) transfers the asset. You can use it for storing data in the block chain without tying up BTC.
4976  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Underwhat circumstances would you sell off all your BTC? on: July 15, 2012, 06:05:46 AM
Never. Even if I knew the entire system was about to fail, I'd still keep 1 BTC.

Ultimately there should be a set of procedures for switching the community from one hash algorithm to another

4979  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: SHA-3 AND BIP on: July 14, 2012, 11:33:46 PM
SHA-256 is very strong.  It's not like the incremental step from MD5 to SHA1.  It can last several decades unless there's some massive breakthrough attack.

If SHA-256 became completely broken, I think we could come to some agreement about what the honest block chain was before the trouble started, lock that in and continue from there with a new hash function.

If the hash breakdown came gradually, we could transition to a new hash in an orderly way.  The software would be programmed to start using a new hash after a certain block number.  Everyone would have to upgrade by that time.  The software could save the new hash of all the old blocks to make sure a different block with the same old hash can't be used.
