521  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: HOWTO: have a safe BTC storage w/o - encryption, backups, or a "clean" computer! on: July 06, 2011, 08:14:39 PM
I presume your post tells me how to come up with "private keys", but how can I import those "private keys" into a wallet so the coins can be spent?
522  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [announce] Namecoin - a distributed naming system based on Bitcoin on: July 06, 2011, 07:35:13 PM
After some trouble setting up, the namecoin client is now downloading blocks and the Phoenix miner is setup to start as soon as all blocks are downloaded.
I understand why it's not popular... The client looks like it's made in 1983... Tongue

I'll mine some Namecoins on one of my rigs to speed things up a bit Wink Can't let all of you wait till august until the difficulty drops...

are you referring to a GUI client for namecoin?

If so, where can I find such a thing?
523  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin addresses FAST! on: July 06, 2011, 06:43:56 PM
Sorry for my noobness... how does one import keys?

525  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Namecoin for Dummies on: July 06, 2011, 02:17:07 PM
You need to re-do this thread and make the title "Someone Write Up a Namecoin for Dummies Please", I was tricked into coming here.

I thought about that right after I hit "post"...  Undecided
526  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Namecoin for Dummies on: July 06, 2011, 02:03:00 PM
I'm trying to wrap my head around namecoin....

By the way, is there a "block explorer" or a "namecoin watch" or other sites for namecoin like there are for bitcoin?
527  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Miners and early adopters, make it rain! on: July 06, 2011, 03:18:54 AM
What we need is people willing to take their paycheck each month, drop it into bitcoins, and live off of it.

Who is willing to take the bitcoin challenge? It doesn't even need to be early adopters, anyone can do this. Bitcoin is a way to buy things, make it your only way.

Sounds like you're volunteering?  Grin

Nice!   Grin
528  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why use Bitcoin? on: July 06, 2011, 03:08:07 AM
I used to use eGold, but I'm got tired of it pretty quickly. The BitCoin community seems to be more active and many more developers.

haha!

I shoulda known you were a fellow e-golder...  Wink

530  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Currency Symbol ฿ on: July 04, 2011, 08:42:02 AM
Stop making this more confusing than it has to be. Every currency should have a 3 letter code.

General consensus has determined that the 3 letter currency code is: BTC

There is less consensus on the symbol. But the most common usage is: ฿

I would stick with those two choices as to avoid confusion and force everyone to start using the same thing.

I agree with you on BTC, but the baht symbol is already taken as a currency symbol.
Both the USD and AUD dollar use $ but they are completely different currencies. A B with a vertical line through it really does seem appropriate imo.

Yes, but whenever I've seen prices quoted in Australian Dollars it has been "A$" or "AUD$".

I like the ฿ too, but I feel it would be best to differentiate it from another currency.

Yep.

Part of the idea of bitcoins is self-ownership.

You don't really own something unless it is in your possession and is free and clear.

Those of you who hate on pyramid/ponzi schemes are hypocrites if you also hold a "Social Security number" or any equivalent.

 +1

good one, I need to remember that.

At least bitcoins and bitcoin related ponzi schemes are very clearly VOLUNTARY.

I've had a Social Security number chasing me around pretty much since I was born, and I certainly didn't ask for it!

How can I print out my wallet.dat to paper, in letters/numbers, and then how can I make it back into a usable wallet.dat file?
535  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin v0.3.24 release candidate available on: July 04, 2011, 07:26:44 AM
I want to make sure I am using the new updated client and not the old one installed on my computer.

I installed the new one, but when I open it and click on "help" in the toolbar and go to "About", I see:

"Bitcoin version 0.3.23-beta"

Was this forgotten, and simply not changed? Or am I just using the old version still and I installed the new new one wrong or something?
536  Other / Politics & Society / Re: I am willing to argue public education has ruined this country... on: July 04, 2011, 06:21:39 AM
All knowing Atlas please answer this simple question for me.

If public education is evil, and Sweden has more state influence in their education system than America does, then why is Sweden not more of a failure than the U.S. ? Why are the Swedish people generally more happy? How come their Society is not a massive failure as you argue?

Sweden lacks the "multiculturalism" and "diversity" with which America is so "blessed"...

(homogeneous cultures historically survive much longer than "multicultural melting-pots")

538  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Currency Symbol ฿ on: July 03, 2011, 10:35:12 PM
The problem with ß is that is that it is actively used by a country/language.

Same with ฿.

To my knowledge, Ⓑ doesn't have that problem; and it is a "B" in a circle - like a "coin".

540  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Currency Symbol ฿ on: July 03, 2011, 09:50:13 PM
Hello all, I decided I'd make an account JUST to show my support for Ⓑ (well, and probably to rant and ramble on other issues as well  Grin). Sure, $ is used in multiple places so why not the Thai ฿? I personally feel like bitcoin is such a radical step (at least for most people, who don't tend to think about the value of currency) that piggybacking on a current currency symbol just because it has the letter B in it is poor form. The Ⓑ (U+24B7) works just as well, or even better. It's shaped like a coin, it has a B, there is no potential for confusion.

I honestly can't think of an argument for ฿ and against Ⓑ.

^^^ asdfqwejpwek has a point...

I like Ⓑ.
