521  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTB] A successful recommendation for a media player that suits my needs (1 BTC) on: October 26, 2012, 04:03:46 PM
I will suggest the following:

1. Get a Wii and soft-mod it so you can install HomeBrew Channel.
2. From Homebrew, download and install WiiMC, Netflix and Hulu.

The Wii
- cables out will allow you to split video and audio exits so that you can connect the audio to your Creative speakers (you might need an adapter RCA or RGB - to stereo jack ... see monoprice.com)
- has Wi-Fi to connect to your network
- has wireless remote (the Wiimote)

The WiiMC
- connects and plays videos and photos from local network (samba, http, ftp) as well as Internet (YouTube, shoutcast).
- can play tons of video formats and also displays subtitles
- can adjust sound levels
- click here for more details

What I really like about this WiiMC is that the folder used in the last session is remembered for Video, Music, Pictures ... and not only the folder but the point in time in the video where you dropped off because you dosed off last night. Smiley You also get a check mark on the videos you watched which becomes very useful if you have a folder with many videos in it (i.e. a 22-24 episodes season folder for a TV series).

Note: there is one thing the Wii/WiiMC solution can't do: HD output. Even on component cable Wii hardware is limited to 480p. However I have this setup hooked to a 42" plasma and I'm very happy with the quality of the video. On a 37" should be even better.

I believe you do ... because you're full of it.

Hows the asic mining going since you got yours in October? Dont be sad that you paid for hot air.

So you agree you're sad that you didn't order. Good, see, it feels better already.

As for me, I only pre-ordered mid September, so my expectations for delivery were/are for end of December. I'll be sad in January if no ASIC comes, in the meantime I'm pretty happy.
525  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BFL Preorder Ship Date? on: October 26, 2012, 03:17:21 PM
The deadline will pass and noone will have their asics. Then they will set their deadline for the next month, like usual, and up their speeds. All this while they mine away on the asics that you pre paid for.

You're just sad you didn't pre-order, don't you? C'mon tis OK, you can cry on my shoulder. Here ...
526  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why ASIC's Should Not Be The Future Of Crypto Currencies on: October 26, 2012, 02:16:07 PM
Also one can make the following observation:

There was only 1 GPU chip manufacturer who dominated mining farms: AMD.
Today there are 2 FPGA chip manufacturers who are at the basis of all FPGA farms: Altera (in the BFL Single), and Xilinx (Spartan6-LX150 in all others).
And soon there will be 3 vendors of ASIC mining chips: BFL, Tom's, and nghzang's companies.
So we are actually becoming more decentralized over time.

Nicely put mrb.

Also, what do you guys think it helps becoming more and more decentralized?

A. Buy a small $150 device that you can just "plug and play" via its one and only USB cable

B. Buy video cards that you need to put inside your computer, check if you have free slots, upgrade MB if not, create racks as wooden scaffolds, have a lot of noise and heat, etc.

527  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why ASIC's Should Not Be The Future Of Crypto Currencies on: October 25, 2012, 02:07:45 PM

To be clear, I'm not anti-asic. I'm not anti-greed. I'm not anti-elitism. I aim to be a socialist but living in a capitalist world requires me to make money to survive. Money, greed and elitism are a fact of life in a capitalist society. Sometimes pointing out the obvious makes it appear as if you're complaining.

...

The OP and many others  claim that bitcoin takes the power away from the elite. There was a time when this was true but it is becoming less true. The introduction of ASIC eliminates quite a lot of people from the mining scene creating an elite class of miners. The BitCoin Foundation is another example of elitism. The few people (Atlas) attempting to have a discussion about this and other issues (or non issues) are marginalized and ridiculed. Again, I'm not anti-bitcoin foundation either.

#1 Same here bro, I hear ya!

#2 It's not the ASIC to be blamed, is the greed part of the human nature, which some may argue is good and some may argue is bad. In the Bitcoin case, the greed does have a "good part" no matter on which side you're arguinmg, the part that brings more efficiency and better technology to the table. However greed's inherent "bad part" is always damaging to the society as a whole if you have liberal views.
528  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How will ASIC miners match up against coinlab if they sign some top MMOGs? on: October 24, 2012, 01:17:20 PM
... Think of us GPU owners being an amazon compute instance. They would pay us GPU owners in BTC for the work attributed to their HPC contracts.

Interesting.

Why would they need "gamers" to do that? Why not just create a software that "mines" the HPC work that needs to be done so that you don't need to be in a game to do it. And not just be in the game, but be idle in the game.

Actually if there are enough requests for high performance computing in the world, this might be a good business idea: start a company that develops mining software for specific HPC tasks and acts as a mining pool for the GPU/CPU miners that join the pool.
529  Economy / Economics / Re: Has the 'Bitcoin Experiment' changed your political or economic views at all? on: October 24, 2012, 12:51:54 PM
I think most of the people are here because they have different political and economic views. Just reverse the cause and effect in your question.
530  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: here's just how screwed ASIC buyers are - READ THIS if you have a preorder on: October 23, 2012, 01:39:41 PM

In spite of your (repeated) unwillingness to accept it, folks tend to have this thing called a "business model." In the case of BFL this business model is to sell hardware to all us crazy people who want to buy it. THIS is wht they got inventment capital on, not the power of bitcoin, and their investors will (richeously) be pissed off if they find out BFL was using their own product (bad in the drug trade, bad in business) rather than selling it to their customers.

...

You don't see Husqvana opening up a lumber mill, same principle here.

Nicely said. +1

And bitcoin community, fickle as it is, it will negatively react to any attempts by the hardware producers to mine first, sell later. That doesn't bode well for their future business if any of them tries that.
531  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Finally photos of real BFL Single SC and Jalapeno ASICs on: October 21, 2012, 12:19:20 PM
Again why not just 1 pic whith both boards on it, why again the seperate pictures???

Because it's all a SCAM! Scam, scamity scam! Don't ever buy ASICs, run away and don't get scammed!

Disclaimer: I'm just saying that because I don't want competition
532  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: How will ASIC miners match up against coinlab if they sign some top MMOGs? on: October 21, 2012, 12:16:15 PM
I hope Coinlabs have more aces in their sleeves. Otherwise this is a doomed project, and it has been doomed from the start. There is simply no way Coinlab would make any money at all, let alone millions they would need to recoup "investments" on any of the mentioned above initiatives. Not in environment where specialized hardware that is by two orders of magnitude more efficient and is widely available.

+1

Before ASICs, Coinlab idea was awesome!

After ASICs, I don't see how Coinlab can still operate and make money unless they plan to use that GPU power for other purposes.
533  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: here's just how screwed ASIC buyers are - READ THIS if you have a preorder on: October 21, 2012, 12:11:18 PM

on the other hand if you have to solve for example a malfunctioning piece of hardware, it's much easier to work with one supplier then all of them. Or if there is an ASIC 2nd generation, then BFL will refund the 1st gen and send you 2nd gen for reasonable price. At least that's what they are saying. I'm a realist, but I have high hopes for ASIC mining, so in this case I think that I'm an optimist...

well they do give lifetime garanties, mmm what if they are outrunned or run in lets say 2 or 3 years?? how the fuck can they make such promise in a speculative market as BTC is...this al sounds to damn wrong,..i don need an 140+ IQ to figger this out. . Shocked Tongue Roll Eyes

They do NOT give a lifetime guarantee like the one you mentioned. It's called a lifetime warranty and it says that they will repair / exchange the unit if it stops functioning because of hardware failures.

They also said that they plan to have some sort of upgrade paths for older devices in case newer and better devices come along. But that's a completely different thing.
534  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Is ASIC's a SCAM? on: October 20, 2012, 06:55:11 PM
If you check the two picture you can easely see that the seposed jally board is excactly the board in the SC pic 90degree turned and fixed with some les parts mounted on the board just look at them for 5min compare and you see that i am right thats a fact it,s the same board only a day less worked on...they really suck .....

Err, but this is how it's supposed to be. The jally is a one (1) underclocked ASIC chip on the board, the little single is a board with 4 chips, the single has 8 chips and the minirig has multiple single boards.

What's the problem?
535  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why ASIC's Should Not Be The Future Of Crypto Currencies on: October 20, 2012, 06:10:47 PM
Here's another perspective on ASICc coming to Bitcoin: the "nuclear weapons" perspective.

Let's say that we don't go the ASIC way and decide to stay with GPUs. However, the ASIC can be built and their hash power compared with GPUs is like nuclear weapons compared with AK-47s (and a few tanks, aka ATI 7970). It seems like a bunch of individuals can set an ASIC project up and deliver (Avalon, Reclaimer). Would you rather have that threat on the Bitcoin network of a possible ASIC disruption from a mal-intended person or would you rather give everybody the "nuclear weapons"?

Are you familiar with M.A.D Cold war concept? If those "evil companies" decide to keep the "nukes" to themselves or do fishy business-es every other miner will get pissed of, Bitcoin level of trust and interest will fall, word will spread out and in the end it could mean the fall of Bitcoin as a whole. What would those companies do with the mined Bitcoin now worthless?
536  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs invests heavily in high speed production equipment on: October 20, 2012, 01:10:15 PM
Exactly. So why is BFL trying to go down that path? Why not let the pros do it?

Because they will have some sort of control if something went wrong. Because if China decides it's the Year of the Dragon 1 month holiday, that means 1 month with no work being done. Etc.

And you can see how people are screaming if there are delays in deliveries.

538  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Butterfly Labs responsibility on: October 19, 2012, 09:52:19 PM

IMHO it is part of BFLs "responsibility" (and in their) best interest to make sure Bitcoins become widely adopted.

If you phrase it like this I agree with you.
539  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: High Efficiency FPGA & ASIC Bitcoin Mining Devices https://BTCFPGA.com on: October 19, 2012, 07:37:30 PM
The people who have the view that the power doesn't matter only have it because they have high profitability expectations.  The people saying that power is all that matters are expecting very long payoff horizons due to difficulty increases.  I think the latter view is safer and also more correct, especially if you're not counting on being very early in your deployment.

Well summarized.

And mybe epoch is right and thinking too long term doesn't make sense and instead we should focus on Gh/$. What if you have similar Gh/$ offers? Wouldn't you go for the one with best Gh/W? Smiley
