521  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin debit card on: May 25, 2013, 03:56:34 AM
The other day I was talking with my brother, explaining to him what Bitcoin is. After the explanation, he asks me if one can pay using bitcoins the same way that using a debit card. I said “No, because...”, but then I realized I don't know exactly how debit cards work.

When paying in a POS, you hand over your debit card, which then is passed through the device and then takes some amount from your account. This could only work if the debit card has some sort of key, right? If so, then how can I be sure that the key won't be stored in the POS and more money won't be taken without my permission?

People everywhere say that you should protect your Bitcoin private keys very carefully, but if I understand correctly, a debit card key has similar risks. If the POS is indeed very secure and will never store any key, could a “Bitcoin debit card” be developed and used in the same way any other debit card is used?

I wonder if people would back the creation of an extremely efficient person-to-person transfer device, it only seems logical.

Bitcoin is so valuable because it is a superior currency over existing fiat in multiple notable aspects:
-Coercion is not used in order to establish value.
-It is easily divisible.
-Decentralized and no point of failure.
-No arbitrary limits except those imposed by the majority of the miners (e.g. democracy).
-Instantly transferable overseas across the world for almost no cost.

The cons are:
-Demagogism, protection of the masses due to persons uneducated on security, most of the market can be convinced to further impose arbitrary limits (e.g. flaws inherent to humans).
-NO efficient person-to-person means of transfers.
-Risk from the government for adopters.

The first one has already been handled and breakthroughs have been achieved, natural evolution is in progress, the third one is also being tackled by activism and promoting the cryptocurrency. Tragically there is virtually no progress in the second one and USD still has the edge over BTC in that aspect, say I want to pay a dollar for a doughnut, I can simply give the bill to the vendor and be on my way eating the doughnut, a Bitcoin user on the other hand would have to pull out his phone with the official (potentially sabotaged) bitcoin app (which requires a jailbreak on iOS), scan the vendors screen, calculate the the USD value in BTC and send the vendor the BTC all while looking like a complete nerd. You would also have to:
-Have an active internet connection.
-Have a charged smartphone.
-Have the willingness to lose social value in the eyes of peers.

I have got an idea for a device down to the technical details, it would be rechargeable by hand, look very futuristic/stylish and stay fully charged more than a month at the time. I don't think the market is ripe for a Kickstarter campaign yet though  Smiley

Just being facetious. Drug free. I like this thread.

I personally do not use narcotics (not even occasionally) and do not understand the reasoning behind using them but I think it is safe to say that not everyone who uses them is an addict and really who are we to judge anyone, if Pablos empire wouldn't have been crushed (or rather if Pablo didn't crush his own empire) they would have probably commercialized it in similar fashion to alcohol.

My drug of choice is heavy squats  Cheesy

Have another hug because you are awesome

The fact that you go to such a far fetched conspiracy as to claim that I only say so in order to eliminate a potential competitor is "paranoid" and illogical.

I claimed no such thing.  I asked whether you had any evidence or whether you were merely attacking your competitor.  That's a question, not a claim.

Dooglus, as I've said, I simply do not care to provide evidence and/or convince people.

532  Economy / Gambling / Re: Casinobit - LIVE ROULETTE - No Registration - FREE BTC on: May 23, 2013, 10:49:17 PM
I'm not being paranoid or dramatic.  I'm simply asking whether you can back up your allegation that bit777 is a "thieving liar".  I don't know very much about either you or him so have no idea what's going on.  If you know of some reason why you feel bit777 shouldn't be trusted to run a casino then I'd like to hear it.

I am here to offer my services, not to protect the average forum member from being swindled from his coins, we can all decide for ourselves which services to use and which not to use. I don't care as long as people don't put us under the same label once their coins are lost. My word is out there.

The fact that you go to such a far fetched conspiracy as to claim that I only say so in order to eliminate a potential competitor is "paranoid" and illogical.

Gorillas may not rape or kill for fun, unlike their more evolved counterparts, but they will kill babies so that the mother will mate with them.

Most infanticides occur when infants' mothers are not accompanied by their group's mature male (usually because he has died). Infants in this situation are almost certain to be killed by unfamiliar males unless they are nearly weaned. Active defense of infants by females is ineffective, and females cannot avoid unfamiliar males for prolonged periods. In contrast, infanticide is rare — yet has been observed — in encounters between mature males. It is not associated with group takeovers and male eviction by extra-group males, unlike the case in many other mammals. Demographic constraints and reproductive competition limit the occurrence of defensive coalitions between males. These factors, plus the high risks associated with male/male aggression, inhibit the occurrence of group takeovers by male coalitions. Infanticide shortens interbirth intervals and results in a high probability that a female will mate with the infanticidal male.

Is this type of murder "necessary"? I have a feeling if you ask the infant the answer would be no. From the male gorillas point of view its all about ensuring the survival of his genetic line by mating with the mother of the baby gorilla he just killed. Granted you cant compare this to what humans do to each other on a daily basis but it is none the less an example of violence for selfish reasons and ones not related to survival but procreation.

With the gorilla listed as an endangered species I believe it to be a necessary evil, I guess you could also look at violence among humans as necessary evil because we are overpopulated, I refuse to believe that however  Tongue

hahaha I really like that question. Since neither of those is really free I choose answer C!

are these hugs free as in beer or free as in speech?
No one will throw you into Guantanamo or unperson you if you do not give a good hug  Wink

Did you see this thread.

the individual who has started that thread is nothing less than a thieving liar

Can you back that claim up at all, or is it that just you attacking the operator of a rival roulette game to try to damage his business?  It doesn't seem fair to attack someone publicly like that and then refuse to respond to their attempts to dispute your claim.

Dooglus, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I may say whatever I please, this is a public forum where discussions are to take place. I am not going to lower myself to the level of demagogism or childish personal insults, I find it to be much more effective to not acknowledge the individuals at all.

I have my own list of casinos that I do not find respectable and a list of casinos that I do, I will gladly play at "competing" casinos that are honest and genuinely offer a great experience. I did not bash the casino out of the blue, I have voiced my opinion after it has been posted in our official topic.

I have a free hug with your name on it Wink so maybe you can stop being such a paranoid drama queen.

EDIT: The 0.01BTC offer is still valid everyone!
535  Other / Off-topic / Re: FREE Hugs on: May 23, 2013, 06:30:52 PM
Its really a classic nature vs nurture debate. How do you determine (or is it possible to determine) how much influence someones personality/genetics/inborn characteristics have on their actions as opposed to the environment in which they were raised. It seems like you lean more towards the John Locke/Ibn Tufail school of thought, which would make sense for someone interested in a decentralized (and essentially libertarian) currency. I would think that most of those on this forum with a philosophical bent would agree with you. But I digress...

Its hard to argue that society has 0 impact on a persons actions (just like its hard to argue that society is the only determining factor). I think that our society and global culture definitely leads to more "bad" people but that some people would be "bad" even in an idealistic utopia (an impossible point to prove but an interesting thought experiment). Some people. despite being given all the love and support in the world still hurt others or seek to impose their thought systems forcibly on society. Are greed, envy, lust, and hate natural human emotions or are they something we have created because of the royally messed up way that we live our lives as a species? Personally I think all of these things exist as part of human nature, we just exacerbate them through the eviornment we create for ourselves.

But that's just my 2 cents...a pretty interesting conversation while I wait in purgatory for my 4 hours to be up...And one deserving of several hugs!

But when you observe other species that are very similar to humans such as gorillas for example you realize that they are all peaceful and not violent collectively, no phenomena such as rape, stealing etc exist, so if that was the case wouldn't some gorillas be naturally violent as well?

By not violent in this context I mean that they show the bare minimum amount of violence which is needed for survival.

Violence, however, is preventable. Evidence shows strong relationships between levels of violence and potentially modifiable factors such as concentrated poverty, income and gender inequality, the harmful use of alcohol, and the absence of safe, stable, and nurturing relationships between children and parents. Scientific research shows that strategies addressing the underlying causes of violence can be effective in preventing violence. Examples of scientifically credible strategies to prevent violence include nurse home-visiting and parenting education to prevent child maltreatment; life skills training for children ages 6–18 years; school-based programmes to address gender norms and attitudes; reducing alcohol availability and misuse through enactment and enforcement of liquor licensing laws, taxation and pricing; reducing access to guns and knives; and promoting gender equality by, for instance, supporting the economic empowerment of women.

(Not that I necessarily agree with everything in that quote, seems biased to cram some agenda)

Hugs to Alani!

Lost enough BTC to Satoshi Dice, Gambling with BTC is dangerous because it doesn't feel like real money.. Read up on the guy who lost his life savings.

Link? Yes but one could argue that casinos use even more elaborate schemes to render the gameplay instinctive and thoughtless, first of all every casino exchanges your dollars to chips so it doesn't feel like real money, secondly rumors of casinos pumping oxygen into the ventilation systems, removing clocks/windows, giving free drinks to players, free rides etc are pretty widespread so I think it is safe to assume that we create an environment which is a lot more safe.

True Story: I got punched in the head by casino security once while abroad and it's not like I'm an incredible douche who seeks to troll people in public, I think it was completely uncalled for and unexpected. Getting in fights abroad isn't that fun.
