5241  Economy / Goods / Re: Buying Amazon Giftcard, $100-$150 on: July 22, 2012, 09:38:12 PM
Bump, still looking.

It is only through people like me that people 'expect' a discount at all on amazon products. There are plenty of sites you can spend your bitcoins in exchange for amazon products as i have mentioned before on other threads, spendbitcoins.com btcbuy.info btczone.com. These guys  exchange in a 1:1 ratio + a small fee, so why do you expect a discount?

Those sites allow a person to trade their bitcoins for Amazon $s.  This offer is to allow a person to trade their Amazon $s for bitcoins.

That's quite a risky trade, and I can see why this trader would offer it only at a premium (a 15% "discount" means the person trading away the Amazon $s is really paying nearly an 18% premium to acquire bitcoins.)

This is one of those situations though where there are risks on both sides   If the Amazon $ seller sends first, there is the chance the bitcoins will never come.  There is also a chance that bitcoins are actually sent and then right after the Amazon $s are reported as having been stolen.   It is really hard to do escrow for this, even escrow with arbitration as there is no way to verify the status of the Amazon $s or that delivery for purchases made with those Amazon $s truly occurred.

To someone who bought the Amazon $s using fraudulent means (carded transactions), the 18% fee is not much of a problem, so that's likely where a good chunk of interest in this will come from.
5242  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: A proposal: Bitcoin address directory on: July 22, 2012, 09:10:25 PM
Say you want to send bitcoins to someone on a forum like reddit, Hacker News, Facebook, or by e-mail, and they don't have a bitcoin address.

Also, there have been bitcoiners who are members of those communities (e.g. Reddit, Stack Exchange, etc.) that have suggested incorporating bitcoin into the site itself, but then the fireworks begin.  Some hate the idea as Bitcoin is seen as a threat by some and they go ballistic at the thought of bitcoin encroaching upon their community.  Others hate it because a good reputation on these forums currently must be achieved through merit.  If money gets involved, the type of participation changes and the quality might suffer.  For instance, some think the introduction of Quora credits really hurt Quora, rating it as being not much better than a Yahoo! answers type of site now.

Witcoin was the first community site to integrate bitcoin.  It was such as small community then and the site ended up closing.   Ogrr.com probably does the best job of this today.  But there are other examples -- Rugatu, and in many ways, the signatures here on the BitcoinTalk forum are frequently used for this since the forum software itself doesn't support associating a bitcoin address to a profile yet.  It does display the URI handler though.  So if I show a bitcoin address here, such as the Faucet's: bitcoin:15ArtCgi3wmpQAAfYx4riaFmo4prJA4VsK it gets formatted nicely for use by your URI-enabled client.
5243  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: A proposal: Bitcoin address directory on: July 22, 2012, 08:22:58 PM
For your specific use cases, you could send the URL as a private message (PM) to the party you wish to send funds to.

And I almost forgot ... Propster, probably would work well for many of the scenarios where unsolicited "props" can be given.

5244  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: A proposal: Bitcoin address directory on: July 22, 2012, 08:14:02 PM
Coinapult.com

Coinapult sends to any e-mail address or mobile (U.S. and Canada):

Blockchain.info also does this, to e-mail as well as to nearly any mobile anywhere:

They even will send to a friend on Facebook:

If you only have a Twitter account:

With BTCTip and Coinapult, if the recipient never claims the coin, they are returned to the sender after a period of time (like 30 days).  With Blockchain.info, the sender can redeem the private key, essentially to cancel the transfer if the recipient never claims the funds or any other reason.

You can also share the private key for an address so that the recipient can redeem the bitcoins.  Here's an easy way to create a paper bitcoin wallet:

Physical bitcoins can be sent to a party that doesn't know what a bitcoin is yet.   Casascius is one provider of a physical bitcoins:

There are also redeemable codes from exchanges.  These too can be passed to somebody who can redeem the code to obtain the value stored against it.

Now any bearer codes, like the paper wallet's private key or the redeemable codes need to be transferred securely.  You wouldn't want to send a Mt. Gox redeemable code through e-mail where anyone sniffing the network between you and the recipient can spend the funds.  But used properly, these function just fine for transferring bitcoins (or USDs, EURs, GBPs, etc., etc.  as well, from the exchanges and wallets that offer them) from one person to the next without knowing the recipient's bitcoin address or account number, e-mail, or anything else.

Low security, instant wallets like Instawallet and Easywallet.org require no username and password -- you just need the URL.

For your specific use cases, you could send the URL as a private message (PM) to the party you wish to send funds to.   Hacker News is the only one that you listed that has no PM method, but most everyone on HN using their own identity also uses some other social media which you could send the funds through.

5245  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Interested in exchanging BTC for CAD in USA on: July 22, 2012, 07:50:00 PM
How do I go about doing this? I see that I can do it on MtGox but how do I end up getting the real CAD currency in hand or in a bank?

Sometimes a transaction like this is for speculation -- to hold Canadian currency to speculate on the future exchange rate.  If that is the case, then usually the amount being sought is a larger amount.  Other times, this type of trade is related to travel or for gifts -- where one looks to procure CADs now to have for some future event.  In that instance, the amount is generally not a larger amount.

If the purchase amount you are looking for is not a large amount, then what you might do is try to find an individual trader from Canada who will send cash in the mail.

The #bitcoin-cad IRC channel is one such place you might find someone trusted who will do this.

LocalBitcoins.com is another -- simply search for a canadian location, like Toronto  for instance:

Another method is to find someone locally who does USD/CAD exchange.  Some banks might offer this, or there may be an exchange that caters to travelers which does this (e.g., Travelex).  Then simply cash out your bitcoins to USDs and do the trade that way.

You listed "in a bank" as one method of receiving your CADs, rather than exclusively getting physical currency.  This might be because you were taking advantage of arbitrage opportunities that existed where profits of several percentage points were available by simply buying bitcoins with USDs and then turning around and selling them for CADs.  Other times the reverse trade is profitable.   Right now these two markets are efficient meaning there is nearly no profit from arbitrage possible.

For that purpose though, and for other various uses, a bank in the U.S. with a foreign currency savings account might work for you.  HSBC, for instance, offers this which they target for use by expatriates.   There are high minimum balances though (like $25K US).

The list of counties for SMS appears to be out of date.  For instance, in the U.S., I no longer am shown a button to purchase with SMS.

5247  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Physical BTC. How does it work? on: July 22, 2012, 11:40:07 AM
Maybe I'll buy one or two for the stored value.

If you are only looking for a secure, offline wallet - paper bitcoins fit the bill (pun intended).

uh oh. That domain seems to have gone away.  Sad

Doh!  Sorry,

A bitcoin friendly kickstarter type site was one of the many projects I had planned for the Syndicate to develop and launch, but it's a long way off at this stage Smiley

I currently have accounts at CP Federal CU [...] and Erie General Electric Credit Union.

Incidentally, now that Dwolla has FiSync, you might find it useful to bug your credit unions to add FiSync support.  That way you can get same-day transfer of funds from your bank to Dwolla (and vice-versa).   Veridian credit union (which was an early investor in Dwolla) was the first to add FiSync.
5250  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Problem with Instawallet. on: July 22, 2012, 08:28:48 AM
I've been using Instawallet for the last 8 months and never had problem. Just today I got 3 and 2 bitcoins from someone on different wallets and Blockchain confirms the transaction but there's no update in the Instawallet balance. While, on the other hand, I transferred 10 bitcoins from IW account to the other and it hasn't confirmed one transaction in the last 6 hours while again Blockchain confirms the confirmations from the network. What's going on? Is it a similar problem that happened before when the Hot Wallet was topped up? I'm hoping so.

Since you are still stuck in the newbie forum, I re-posted parts of this in the main Instawallet thread:

This is likely a technical issue which will be resolved eventually.
5251  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: New, simple online wallet: www.instawallet.org - no signup required on: July 22, 2012, 08:22:04 AM
There are a couple reports of issues where the blockchain shows the transaction having confirmed, but the Instwallet balance wasn't credited.

Here's one, which I'll quote here since the person reporting it is still stuck in the newbie forum:

Blockchain confirms the transaction but there's no update in the Instawallet balance.

There is no announcement of any problem here though, nor on the site nor on the Twitter account @Instawallet
5252  Economy / Gambling / Re: Does satoshidice.com own satoshidice.net? Or have I just been scammed? on: July 22, 2012, 08:03:17 AM
Maybe add a report phishing link somewhere on page. Also report to search engines as phishing site. (eg. http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish and http://reports.internic.net/cgi/registrars/problem-report.cgi)
Anyhow thanks everyone for helping me out. Smiley

5253  Economy / Speculation / Re: namecoin down! related to bitcoin prices? will it go up again? on: July 22, 2012, 07:27:30 AM
Here is another one! http://www.cryptotron.com/
This is only for BTC-e.com  though, and is still very new, so it has some stability issues.

I don't see any namecoin charts in that.
5254  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ResponsePay - Mobile Wallet, Subsidiary of WalletBit. on: July 22, 2012, 05:15:45 AM
Ruh roh. https://responsepay.com in Chrome for iOS (on my own WPA2 wifi):
"The site's security certificate is not trusted!"

There might be issues with StartSSL on some mobile devices. But it should be safe to continue, as long as it says  responsepay.com in the address field.

Negatory.   Shows *.walletbit.com for the certificate issued to when accessing https://responsepay.com from my Android.

Could the account allow me to set locale so that I can specify how transaction history should show the dates?  Right now it shows UTC, I'm presuming.  I might want them to correspond with my timezone rather than UTC.
5255  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mobile money slowly turning East Africa into cashless society on: July 22, 2012, 02:05:25 AM
Here's a post from another thread that directly responds to this:

Next what is needed are some stories of actual bitcoin commerce occurring.  For instance, there are many tech and business incubators on the continent  - a perfect place for bitcoins to begin circulating among a small group of willing participants who generally are among the early adopters and wouldn't entirely resist trying something new like this.  Here's an example:

The co-founder of Ushahidi, Erik Hersman, wrote an article on how there is tech growing from within, for solving the problems that those living there see them.

"From Kenya to Madagascar: The African tech-hub boom"

Excerpts:

Quote
I've talked to a couple of start-up entrepreneurs - Pule Mmolotsi, who is testing out an Oyster-like card for public transportation in the country.
[...]
in the past two years there has been an interesting phenomenon in Africa - the proliferation of tech hubs and incubators.
[...]
There are now more than 50 tech hubs, labs, incubators and accelerators in Africa, covering more than 20 countries. In Nairobi, we have six.
[...]
if we had waited for the government to create the iHub in Kenya, we would still be waiting today.
[...]
Innovation comes from the edges, so it comes as no surprise that innovators are found in the margins. They are the misfits among us, the ones who see and do things differently.
[...]
The tech hubs in Africa provide a home for those with new and innovative ideas, create an atmosphere where they are encouraged to try new things, and most importantly are able to meet like-minded individuals they can grow with.

Erik is aware of bitcoin.  A few months ago he tweeted:
"OH @iHub: "Bitcoin gets bad press since it reminds us all that currency is a shared delusion"

I've no doubt bitcoins are a topic being discussed every so often in these tech spaces.

I look forward to learning how bitcoin might be used in new way there.

bitZino has added Video Poker, with the claim of being provably fair as well.

BitZino's first game, launched last month, was Blackjack.

Because it does the cryptography in Javascript, I wasn't sure how well it would perform well on a mobile.  I've played both of these from the browser on my Android and it performs just fine.
5257  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: selling MoneyPak for 100$+ worth of BTC! on: July 21, 2012, 09:58:44 PM
The closest one is 1.5 hours drive. Whereas there is a store that sells moneypak right down the street from me. And I like the safety and anonymity. Those are the only real reasons. Smiley

Fair enough!

If you can't find a trade here, you might want to place an offer on the #bitcoin-otc marketplace.  Mention that you'll have the receipt (showing you paid with cash) to increase confidence the fund are legit.

Also, if you'll be sending first, take precautions like using an escrow.   Or use the #bitcoin-otc's authentication system that way you can ensure your counterparty is authenticated with the #bitcoin-otc Web of Trust (WoT) and has a good trust history

so these need to be timely in execution, or I need the address from which a buyer is depositing.

TrustCash (and the services that use them, like BitInstant, AurumXChange, etc.) solve that by using the deposit amount as a unique ID.  So if I am buying $100 worth of bitcoins I might be asked to deposit exactly $100.41, where the .41 identifies whose order it was.
5259  Economy / Gambling / Re: bitZino - HTML5 Bitcoin Casino - Provably Fair on: July 21, 2012, 09:12:06 PM
We have just launched Video Poker!

Nice.

So, as certain sites start to become more popular, they potentially become bigger targets.  Another poker site changed from .com to .eu (.com still redirects to the .eu though.)

Are "hardening" steps being considered, not just for the site but for the wallet / account data / funds as well?
5260  Other / Off-topic / Re: My New Project - NameTerrific (now in Alpha) on: July 21, 2012, 09:03:29 PM
NameTerrific's Bitcoin payment is now automated. I have updated the OP.

Nice!   Looks to be about a 10% or more discount for paying with Bitcoin.   At the current exchange rate I was quoted 1.2 BTC, which is about 12.5% below the $12 USD price, using Mt. Gox last.

One bit of feedack -- during the checkout process I filled out the profile but the Company was mandatory.  The instructions say to use your name if not a company.   If you are asking for display name, then use the field title display name.  But titling a field Company when no company exists feels wrong.  I don't know how other registrars handle it.  I've always left the field blank for domains I own personally-

Also, after entering my profile, I didn't know what to do next ... I believe showing a link that goes to the cart would have helped.
