5541  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I'm fucking out. bitcoin will be over soon..confirmed. on: January 25, 2015, 11:27:50 AM

Do you really call "Coinapult" a solution?  Do you seriously think that they really could survive holding a 79% loss on the books for over 6 months & still be able to pay commitments?
To (hedge) a 79% loss you need an alternative income source to support it.  Located in Panama, I imagine they have so many other alternate income streams, really?
I wouldn't count on them fulfilling their commitments when the BTC price fluctuates wildly.

79% of what?

Anyhow, if you're concerned about their business model just ask them directly to explain it to you (before declaring them insolvent). IIRC they're active on this forum.

And they're not the only business that offers such service:

http://www.coindesk.com/first-glimpse-inside-halsey-minors-new-payments-platform-bitreserve/

https://bitreserve.org/en/homepage

https://bitreserve.org/en/status

BitReserve have offices in US and Shanghai, if Panama is not good for you.

ps I don't use neither Coinapult or Bitreserve, so I cannot vouch for any of them.

I think we need the "newbie jail" it was an important thing in this forum.

Well, it wouldn't help much in this case.

I somewhat agree on newbie jail, but I'd also give them access to other 'technical' sections, so they can get help with mining, wallets set-up etc.
5543  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN] CoinMap - Map showing places where Bitcoin is accepted on: January 25, 2015, 09:50:09 AM

As you've already noted, the site is generally rarely correct about who is accepting crypto and often has scams/spam listed.

I don't know what % of data is incorrect or scams/spams, but it is still pretty useful. I found a few local BTC accepting businesses, I didn't even know they existed until I found them on CoinMap.
5544  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: *** SafeDice.com REFERRAL GIVEAWAY *** [CLOSED] on: January 24, 2015, 02:43:22 PM

any plans on doing more giveaway like this? looking forward to it Smiley

I will likely do another one at some point (maybe next month). Just need to re-think the terms/model and raise some more funds. I'm hoping to do it for at least 50 people next time.

So stay tuned and keep watching 'games and rounds' section  Wink

Well with the recent fall of BTC you will soon have many high rollers.

I dont think btc price causes high rollers to play

It's not a rule, but I've noticed that often, right after price crash, there's noticeably more action on some gambling sites.

my profit is half 1btc, best site for me ever. Smiley

I'm at -0.68 loss and it's still my favourite dice (together with PRC).
5546  Other / Meta / Re: begineers section is turning into faucet list! on: January 24, 2015, 02:23:52 PM
...
but now every other post is either a video or faucet list just for gaining some referrals  Huh

Mostly because one of the most popular questions from newbies is "how/where do I get free bitcoins?"
5547  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Either the Kraken CEO is fooling with us or... on: January 24, 2015, 11:22:46 AM
At no time did he say that creditors were going to get all their money back. He only said that he believed that there would be resolution and that they would get paid in 2015. Also, not all the Mt. Gox assets disappeared. Creditors could get 25% maybe.

But is he funding it himself ?

? Nope, Kraken were appointed to assist with the bankruptcy process, that's all.

So whatever assets are left from Mt Gox will be divided among all the creditors. So basically, people will be compensated, but not fully.

5548  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: #### POLL#### Bitcoin Donation to Wikipedia on: January 24, 2015, 10:34:00 AM

It appears they have been accepting BTC for about a year, it’s just the link is hidden at the bottom.

I think this needs to be up near the PayPal section, that way when people see it, they will be curious what Bitcoin is and start reading up about it. Thus, not only is this thread about Wikipedia accepting BTC, which they already do. It is about spreading awareness of BTC.

And that's the reason why they won't make 'donate with BTC' too visible. People who are about to donate get distracted and start checking what the bitcoin is (abandoning the 'donate' site).

That's what happen to Mozilla, they've run some test analysis for 17 days when Bitcoin was listed along with other payment options. Eventually they also decided to hide it. Can't blame them really, their goal is to get more donations not to promote bitcoin.

See my post from other thread:

...
I know that they are accepting it if you do some research BUT why hiding it ??
...

Why? Likely for the same reasons Mozilla removed bitcoin donation button. It distracted page viewers resulting in less donations.

https://fundraising.mozilla.org/bitcoin-donations-to-mozilla-17-days-in/

Quote
We received numerous requests from donors that they wanted bitcoin featured right on our primary donation form. Given the volume of page views to that form (millions during the life of the campaign), I was concerned that adding any unnecessary text would distract donors and depress non-bitcoin conversions, the source of more than 99% of all our campaign revenue. So we decided to add “Donate with Bitcoin” text, and test whether it depressed conversion or not. Here is what that looked like: [...]

The test showed that revenue per visitor drops by about $0.07 USD. Here is the Optimizely graph showing a 7.5% reduction in revenue per visitor:[...]

What the meaning of re-distribute? Share link also same?

Uploading pirated videos is illegal in most of the countries. Now, sharing links is more complicated. You don't distribute illegal content yourself but you're pointing your viewers to such content. Whether such activity is legal or illegal very much depends where you live and how your local authorities will interpret the law.

Even if there is no law preventing link-sharing, the copyright owner can decide to sue you, if he can prove that you knew that links lead to protected content and did nothing to prevent that + you were earning income on sharing such links, you will be likely to pay a very high compensation.

There was a story about British guy creating popular link-sharing site (TVShack), although he didn't break any law in UK, he was facing extradition to the US (!).

Eventually he got away with only £20,000 compensation.

Quote
The domain name for the TVShack website was seized by the US authorities in June 2010. It claimed that the website was hosting links to pirated films and TV programmes, earning more than $230,000 (£147,000) in advertising revenue.

Mr O'Dwyer has always denied any criminal intent.

In December he travelled to the US to arrange a deal. He agreed to pay £20,000 in compensation to rights holders, in return for the case against him being dropped. At the time his barrister described the deal as the first of its kind.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/revenue-and-customs-brief-9-2014-bitcoin-and-other-cryptocurrencies

As far as I'm aware Bitcoin now no longer has any special rules regarding taxation, so basically as long as you're not above the £10,000 mark for the year you should be fine, I would double check with HMRC though because the rules might have changed again but they've been relatively open about Bitcoin taxation.

Read the brief in full so you know what's going on, but if you have any doubts it would be a good idea to ask a lawyer just in case, I'm currently poking around myself, I don't have the money yet but I want to know the rules just in case. Basically though, as long as you keep it in Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies it doesn't matter how much you have the UK government doesn't treat it as a taxable or regulated currency.

Quote
*IT - the profits and losses of a non-incorporated business on Bitcoin transactions must be reflected in their accounts and will be taxable on normal IT rules

*Chargeable gains: CT and CGT - if a profit or loss on a currency contract is not within trading profits or otherwise within the loan relationship rules, it would normally be taxable as a chargeable gain or allowable as a loss for CT or CGT purposes. Gains and losses incurred on Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies are chargeable or allowable for CGT if they accrue to an individual or, for CT on chargeable gains if they accrue to a company.

OK, I'm confused about the highlighted part. What are 'trading profits' in this context? I assume it means continuous (business) activity rather than one-time trade of BTC for GBP.

So if you're playing on the exchange buying low selling high regularly, then you'll fall under Income Tax. If you bought BTC once and then sell it all with profit, then it's CGT?

Anyhow, in case of doubt it's best to ring HMRC and ask, or better yet write them and get a written response (to have a proof), as I'm pretty sure a lot of their advisers may still be confused on bitcoin.

Hi guys

I'm 19 atm and I have bitcoin which I would want to sell, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I know there is bank transfer but I don't know enough about tax etc and bitcoins to be honest. Is it legal to sell them in the UK? Would I be taxed? The amount would be atleast £5000 so would that cause any red flags on my account by the bank for receiving such amount of money? Would cash in hand go smoothly? I don't mind paying the tax or whatever but if somebody could explain it all to me that would be great.

Thanks!

It's legal to buy and sell bitcoins and selling 5k worth is far under the capital gains tax threshold, however some banks don't seem to like bitcoin sales and have been known to shut down people's bank accounts. That being said bittylicious is a uk site where you can buy and sell for bank transfers and I haven't heard any bad stories about them.

Are there any confirmed bank accounts shut-downs because of bitcoins in UK? I've heard some stories of that sort from US, but don't recall anything from UK.

5k is not far less under cap gains threshold, which currently is at £6,000 (or at tax-free allowance rate, if you don't have any other income: £11,000).

https://www.gov.uk/capital-gains-tax/what-you-pay-it-on
https://www.gov.uk/capital-gains-tax/allowances

So if the OP buys 5k worth of BTC for cash (no receipt) and sells it later for 6k, he would be liable for cap gain tax (even know he only gained 1k). So it would be best to buy at legit place which provides some sort of receipts.

Don't know whether 5k is considered suspicious transaction by banks. But you can always ring them and ask, don't have to mention bitcoin, just say you want to transfer to a trading platform and will that be a problem.

i want to ask about legal or illegal
if the Ops buy an original copy then he make online streaming website with that copy
it is legal or illegal ?

It's illegal. Standard end-user agreement only allows the private (home) use. There's usually some sort of disclaimer somewhere, either on the box or at the beginning of the movie.

To legally re-distribute protected content (or make it publicly available) he would need to enter into separate agreement with whoever holds the rights (or obtain a licence).
How to do that? Did I need to contact every movie producer or what ?

Likely so. But I've no idea how to go around that in practice. Probably you wouldn't even be able to get in touch with relevant people, they wouldn't waste their time to respond to small start-up or website operator.

Either way, it would be very costly to operate legally.

Edit: once before the hack happened, the CEO (Nejc kodrič) said that they have a reserve fund to cover the whole hot wallet funds in case they had a problem with it (hackd, lost, technical issues...), but I personally don't think that they had 19000 BTC sitting around just in case... I can imagine 500-3000 BTC but not 19000 BTC

Out of curiosity, when did he say that? Do you have any link/more details?

not long before the hack, I think maybe 2-3 months ago !!!  I don't have a link because he told us (me and a couple other guys) this in a Bitcoin meeting here in the technological park in Kranj, Slovenia. (orgenized by Bitstamp)

Oh OK. Thanks for replying.

It would be unlikely for any company to just sit on such amount of fiat/BTC. But then again, they did get some VC funding from Pantera some time ago (~$10m), so it could be possible (depending on the terms of that funding).

But I really do hope their next financial statement will be audited.
5556  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: #### POLL#### Bitcoin Donation to Wikipedia on: January 23, 2015, 05:24:29 PM
Wikipedia is already accepting Bitcoin, like what others said. However, not many people donate to them using Bitcoin because.. they require lots of information before we can donate. Donation should be anonymous..

There was a thread somewhere about this.

They have to ask for such info to produce the receipt you can use for tax deduction. If you want to remain anonymous, just enter fake info, they won't verify it. Problem solved.
5557  Economy / Gambling / Re: Bitoin Dice Guide House Bank Investment Comparison Table For The Top 8 Operators on: January 23, 2015, 05:21:10 PM

With 10,000 coins wagered in 2 weeks at both Poket Rockets Casino and BitDice site profit should have gone up a lot more, we say this about BitDice over and over again, it seems they are either

1.   Unlucky
2.   Faking turnover
3.   Underpaying investors
4.   Any combination of the above.

But PRC's profit have gone pretty high. Problem is the amount invested have grown by higher % then the amount wagered, so your share in profits got diluted. Not to mention that many investors are on higher kelly option. If you are on 0.5 Kelly (default option when moving to the new site) you should change it to at least x1.

I wouldn't donate to heavily censored centralised digital encyclopedia. It's full of wrong information, I rather keep my Bitcoins in my wallet.

Then don't.

Surely there are many sensitive subject/entries you can disagree with. But there's still plenty of useful info there. It would be hard, if not impossible, to find any internet user who has never made use of Wikipedia.

Well maybe they should make it clear, I dont see any option for accepting BTC.

Have a look for yourself.

Yup, it's a bit hidden. On the bottom of donate page there's small 'Other ways to give' hyperlink, which will direct to:
