561  Other / Archival / Re: [BUYING] Your Alitin Mint Coins on: March 07, 2017, 02:48:12 PM
I have a 2 oz. Adam Smith that was funded until yesterday when I cracked open the slab to redeem.  It's still in mint condition as it was removed with care and immediately put into an airtight.  Those who know me know that I'm not usually one to sell coins, but I will entertain all offers on here or via PM.
562  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Alitin Mint Coin Breach on: March 06, 2017, 05:10:27 PM

So far, we have received very few reports and we believe that the breach was quite limited, but we urge any of our customers to contact us so that we can work with you on an individual basis to resolve the matter to your satisfaction as soon as possible.

There were approximately 56 coins which may have been breached according to this post by bitenvy: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1814828.msg18079926#msg18079926

So far, that's roughly $140k in lost bitcoins.

1. Will you provide a list of all of the public keys associated with the coins you've sold?  From that we could check to see how many were redeemed last month and get the entire total.

2. Please provide the list of people who were involved from key generation, to engraving, to assembling into the final slab.

3. At which point in the process do you believe the breach occurred? And why was it only a subset of the coins?
563  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Alitin Mint Adam Smith Coins compromised! on: March 06, 2017, 04:43:40 PM
This has me worried about the physical coin market in general. I know Casascius is known to be trusted here, I'm wondering did Mike mainly work alone and did he personally address what was done with private keys, assuming he destroyed them. I've never heard of issues with Casascius.

Honestly, I am surprised this hasn't happened more often.  Other than Alitin, the only other maker is Coinographic who performed a mass sweep of private keys, and in the case of Coinographic it was only Litecoin, so the damages were not as severe.  This case with Alitin is by far the biggest incident I'm aware of.

The fact it hasn't happened very much leads me to believe the community has done a decent job vetting and/or only buying funded coins from people who they trust.  The biggest deterrent to doing something like this would be knowing exactly who is making the coins and where they are located.  It's unlikely someone is willing to ruin their name and go "on the run" if they have spent years building up a reputation in the community.

In the case of Alitin, I have no idea whether these Forsyth guys are real people, or assumed identities.  If they are real, my hope is that it was all a result of negligence and there's a valid explanation for how this happened and a plan to pay the victims back.  If they aren't real, then it's even more important that we perform due diligence on any future makers who want to offer funded coins.

I'm very sorry to see this, bitenvy.  I just checked my Adam Smith coin and cracked it open because it was still funded. This is very disheartening.

It looks like 18 inputs of approx 2 BTC were sent into this address: https://blockchain.info/address/19A5uTjZzip9gmNUVjSifeAeUwMdyYQ4zQ

If Alitin wants to gain any sort of credibility here, we need them to publish a full list of all addresses to determine how many may have been compromised. We also need to know the full chain of custody from who generated the keys, who did the engraving, and who performed the final slabbing.

It's odd that they may have only redeemed a small number of coins, so maybe only a subset are at risk.  If your coin is still funded, I would strongly consider redeeming it now and forget about losing out on whatever premium you may have gotten.  At this point, I doubt people would want to buy these funded or pay any premium at all, so just take your coins if you still can.   Angry

Received my notes today. They are very high quality and I'm very glad to have them. Thanks to both Polymerbit and MJ for making it happen.
569  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Where to get custom hologram stickers made? on: February 13, 2017, 02:24:32 AM
If you plan to make or sell funded coins, I would recommend investing quite a bit of time and money into the hologram design/production. Not only does it serve as the tamper proof mechanism, but a well designed custom hologram would be very difficult to forge, making sure your coins would retain value after they have changed hands a few times.

Hi MJ,

Please change my reservation to the lowest #'s available. If they aren't consecutive, that's fine.

572  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [AUCTION] HUGE LOT OF COINS on: January 31, 2017, 05:19:08 PM

I reserve the right to cancel the auction at anytime, even after it has ended, I can refuse any bid for any reason

I am free to remove/add items from this listings. (highest bidder can revoke their bid if this happens)

These are absurd stipulations. I would never bid on an auction with these terms, and I would also caution others against it.
573  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTS] 2012 Casascius Nickel Series 1 Error MS-65 on: January 31, 2017, 02:51:41 PM
Last few I have seen sold around for 7BTC. According to spotcoins only 590 are left -> http://www.spotcoins.com/bitcoin/casascius/variety/5-btc-series-1
I'm actually wondering how many errors coins are out there (i.e. of this particular series)?

According to the Coinfirm Encyclopedia, there are 570 unopened 5 BTC Series 1 (Error) coins left.  They were originally priced at 6 BTC each.

This looks like a great deal for an early Cas in very good condition.  Sadly the denomination is more than what I would be in the market for, but I don't expect this will be available for long.

Excited to hear about the progress, guys.  This is by far the coin I am most looking forward to in 2017.  I'm curious if you will be PM'ing us directly to arrange for payment, or if we need to keep tabs on this thread for an announcement? Either way is fine, just want to make sure I don't miss out  Cool
577  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [The Raffle of All Raffles II] Coinmakers Unite, BTCC Backed. 17BTC+ Prizepool! on: January 27, 2017, 04:27:43 PM
This raffle is not very transparent at all. Tman now has 8 tickets only yet has asked for 40 tickets throughout the thread. Is this because he could only have won 2 more raffleceptions and been maxed out?

Raffleceptions have been non transparent as when started they go from 0 to filled with 0 txids provided in the posts.

Tman's name was all over the play board. This should have required payment up front (Which the rules clearly state, yet for a day and a half he sat with 40 tickets unpaid..And now 0).

For these reasons I would like my 12 tickets refunded and I may play like Tman and get in through raffleceptions. The two escrow members can contact me for an address.

I don't have a stake in this considering I don't have a ticket, but I did participate in one of the raffleceptions (unsuccessfully) and I'm not sure why you feel it is not transparent.  The raffleceptions are just attempts to pool money for people to get a chance of winning a ticket to this main raffle. Whether the TXID is posted or not, you can simply look at the public address hhampuz provides for the raffleception to see that funds were paid.  In addition, at the end of every raffleception, hhampuz or someone has to provide the 0.06 to get them onto the main raffle, otherwise the money would not be there to purchase the prizes.

However, I do agree that these mini-raffles should not begin unless all participants have paid (regardless of whether they are "good for it" based on their reputation).  I also think that for the main raffle, nobody should get their name listed on a spot as reserved if they haven't paid, which appears to now be the case.

At the end of the day, while there is always room for improvement, I think this raffle is being administered in a very transparent way.  There are trusted members who are holding the funds in a multi-sig address to prevent any sort of scam, multiple coin makers and other collectors helping to sponsor prizes, and raffleceptions that help serve as inexpensive on-ramps for people who only want to risk a fraction of the ticket price.  The amount of work involved in organizing this seems to be pretty significant with very little overhead, and I think hhampuz deserves a lot credit for that.

MJ,

I'm still interested.  I would like 10 notes. Consecutive #'s if possible, no worries if not.
