562  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / 5 Ways to Spend Bitcoin in Amsterdam on: April 26, 2015, 05:41:13 PM
With startups seeking to make the city the "bitcoin capital of the world", it has historically attracted high-profile bitcoin events. Last spring, for example, saw the opening of Amsterdam's very own Bitcoin Boulevard, a project that signed up 10 merchants in the city to accept bitcoin.

The Bitcoin Foundation also picked Amsterdam to host its Bitcoin 2014 conference last May in what may have been the most high-profile testament to the city's pull for bitcoin aficionados

563  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Paves a Way for Evolution of the Species on: April 26, 2015, 05:50:41 AM
In the six years since the inception of Satoshi Nakamoto's blockchain, many have begun to see bitcoin as a disruption force in the future of finance.

Put simply, money is a ledger – one that has now become programmable. Now anyone can create their own currency and with simple scripting language, different values can be coded to manifest values of community.

Economists try to understand this new innovation through modern monetary theory, while those who advocate economic equality tend to dismiss bitcoin as Wall Street-friendly currency with a libertarian bent.

566  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin in the Headlines: Pundits Ignite Battle of the Sexes on: April 25, 2015, 11:28:56 AM
In the absence of exciting product launches or massive funding rounds, the digital currency community saw renewed scrutiny in the media this week.

Mainstream outlets are still indulging in lengthy features on the subject, however, most continued to address the technology's perceived shortcomings.

The general consensus seems to be that bitcoin is still doomed for failure, although everyone seems to have a different – and equally creative – opinion as to why.

569  Economy / Service Discussion / Bitcoin’s first killer app? Bankymoon lets you pay your utility bills in digital on: April 23, 2015, 05:40:52 PM
We’re living in a world where everything’s being labeled as smart. From our phones to watches and even our cars. But something that’s really being taken for granted is our utility grids — including gas, water and electricity. And while the majority of the world might be migrating onto the so-called smart grids, they are still filled with a lot of dumb problems. The biggest being payments.

South African bitcoin startup Bankymoon is boldly taking on this industry. That’s besides having a killer name for a bitcoin startup.

BitPay Number Crunching

Because of Bitcoin’s disruptive nature, the digital currency is in a prime position to set a lot of new and unexpected trends. Granted, Bitcoin is still speculative, and its price volatility is still present, but more people now value Bitcoin as a currency.

For BitPay, having processed over US$158 million in Bitcoin transactions during 2014, things are looking positive all across the board. Just the amount of USD in Bitcoin transactions processed itself is up by 47% compared to 2013, a year which saw Bitcoin transitioning into a currency rather than a commodity.

In order to explain the growing USD volume of Bitcoin transactions, you have to look at the actual number of transactions processed by BitPay. The number of transactions in 2014 has more than doubled compared to 2013.

But what about the actual average order value? As the number of yearly transactions goes up, what what will happen to the average payment amount? As you would expect from something that is transforming into a currency rather than a commodity, the average value per order went down. Don’t be mistaken, though, as this is exactly the effect Bitcoin enthusiasts are looking for, which indicates people value the amount of Bitcoin they own.

To put this into perspective, if these same numbers were reported by a credit card company, there would be roughly $7,991,250 in fees associated with all the transactions. In the case of BitPay? 0% fees for everyone.
