Yes the value in bitcoins is mostly driven by speculation and hope, but those dreams have the potential to transform into reality.

Just think about how the price of a coin is currently determined. People just place bids and asks according to information about where other people are placing their bids and asks

That means the price of bitcoins is non zero as a result of dependent origination (a Buddhist might say). The bids and asks support each other like the two sides of an arch bridge, essentially creating a stable structure out of two opposing forces. This kind of interaction is why it is possible for value in bitcoins to arise out of nothing. Without being backed so to speak.

Anyone of you believe that people will put more money into bitcoins when they have to pay more for food and housing? Egh.

i think the hope is one day you could pay BTC for food and housing.....

I was just curious.
565  Economy / Lending / Car Title Loans aka Pink Slip Loans? on: January 26, 2012, 07:26:56 AM
Is anyone doing this?  I'm not sure how it is usually done but I know it is a legit form of a loan agreement.
566  Economy / Services / Re: Cam Shows on: January 26, 2012, 06:15:56 AM
us pimps need to get together and create a massive community of pimps n hos to pull our masterful knowledge together and create the ultimate bitcoin bunny house/camshow website!

but in all seriousness, why hasnt anyone done this yet?  i bet alot of the chicks from /r/gonewild would eventually see how they could easily make a few bucks showing their wild side once in a while...knowing they could remain somewhat anonymous.

570  Economy / Speculation / Re: CRASH!!!!!!!!! on: January 25, 2012, 06:45:14 PM

im starting to understand how this forum works....
571  Economy / Speculation / Re: [Poll] What do you think the price will be 7 days froim now? on: January 24, 2012, 12:44:31 AM
1. Reserves are finite.  Too much speculation in one direction locks it up in that direction until someone takes profit or is liquidated.
2. There is slippage risk.  If someone tries to exploit this, they can hit Bitcoinica hard.  To do so would take quite a bit of capital.
3.  Zhoutong could be dishonest and force liquidations by trading on mtgox, but there is no evidence of such behavior.  Such behavior was once used by so called bucket shops to mitigate the slippage risk, which was more severe for them due to them hedging partially with manual decision making.  Bitcoinica now covers all positions, so unless slippage becomes a problem due to targeted attacks, Zhoutong will make more money by playing fair.

Number 2, is EXACTLY what im talking about...

So what is your issue with me ?

Wake up, people have a lot of capital..  this is happening. now...

And the locking up starfish makes it worse! If you cant understand that, I really have little more to say..
Not my job to teach you.

As long as Zhou is dealing on mtgox, there will be massive bouts of volatility from the big players screwing around with Zhou because there is a clear sign * saying, hey! come over here and abuse me!  Who wins?

Not us.

I have no issue with you... You are the one bringing emotion into this conversation.  In fact, I'm a little taken aback by it.

The * is caused by traders.  Anyone who is holding long on Bitcoinica knows about it.  They are the ones taking the risk, and the ones who may be screwed.  If you are not one of them, why complain?  If you are one of them, why complain when you could close your long?

Should we shut down the pirate bay because it allows you to do things that may get you in trouble?

not me you are not so great at analogies....

massive instability keeps people from jumping on board.  case in point, i told all my friends about bitcoin during the good wives hype and they were ready to try out the waters...after that crash you could forget it.
572  Economy / Speculation / Re: Comcast DNS Now Fails on Bitcoinica? on: January 23, 2012, 05:29:16 AM

573  Economy / Speculation / Re: Sleepless? Tired? No time for family? on: January 23, 2012, 12:26:56 AM

It could be this way:
First field you can select with a drop down "buy" or "last" or "sell" or "average". Second Field you could select "<" or ">" or "=" or "<=" or ">=" and in third field you could place your numbers.
Therefore three or four rows, which each acts same way. This would be really more flexible. Anyway itīs just an Idea.

Another Idea is making the Website a bigger Alarm-Tool: you could enter as many alarms like you want. Even for different marketplaces. And then you could be informed via Email or Twitter and you would have a little alarm-frontend.

that sounds excellent

thanks guys apparently you just change the numbers in that second window [default 5/10/15].  im not sure what the 3rd line (yellow) is generally for, you guys have any idea ?

Hmm, I notice in the description of the alert that it is based on 3 moving averages.  Maybe those are the three colors?  If you find out, please let us know.

yes i understand they are 3 moving averages but what is the point of the 3rd im wondering?  i guess i dont even fully understand what the other 2 are telling either...but i get the concept Grin

Does anyone know of any BTC trading tools that has alarms for moving average cross-overs?

Does Sierra Chartfeed have such alarms?

Thanks in advance!

"Moving Average Crossover Alert: Add the study Moving Averages to the chart. The study will display three moving averages. Open the Study Settings window for the study. Configure the Inputs as you require. On the Subgraphs tab set the Draw Style moving averages you do not want to see to Ignore. In the Simple Alert >> Condition text box on the Alerts tab enter: =CROSSOVER(SG1, SG2). This means if the first two moving averages cross, an alert will be given."

From http://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?l=doc/doc_AlertCondAndScan.html

sorry to keep buggin you guys but just got sierra installed properly and am trying to figure out how to get the EMA setup with the specific numbers.  am i even selecting the right one? (apparently moving average is the same as EMA?)  and how do i put in the specific numbers (10/21 etc)
577  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: MtGox/TradeHill SierraChart bridge - Realtime Bitcoin charts [v0.4] on: January 22, 2012, 01:40:36 AM
Hey guys, I am trying to get this set up.  I have sierrachartfeed-0.4 and Sierra Chart installed.  Whenever I try to run sierrachartfeed-0.4 it just instantly closes on me.  I am running under Win7 with administrator privileges.  I have also tried changing the compatibility settings to XP SP3 with no results.

Can you please run sierrachartfeed from terminal window? It will print some error message which can help me track the problem...

well i found out that i was originally double clicking it...found out your supposed to run it through the cmd prompt.  all it takes is to type the file name, yes?
i renamed the feed to make it easier it is the .4 version

does sierrachart HAVE to be installed in the root of C:/?

EDIT: seems like it does indeed need to be in the root of C:/  working!

579  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoinica "zhoutonging price" formulae (unofficial) on: January 21, 2012, 11:49:09 PM
many thanks, I have Firefox + greacemonkey & Chrome, just haven't been using them hardly since I moved to Mac for the first time a couple of months ago & tend now to just stick with Safari because my Bookmarks are there & don't migrate/update to FF or CRM except for when I first loaded those browsers & are now out of date for my needs, I like the extensions available in FF a lot but have got used to having the bookmark folders above the tabs bar now & find them even more useful, I will check it out on Chrome tomorrow - thanks again

here ill make things easy for you.  i prefer firefox mainly bc chrome has terrible adblock support.  it is really easy to transfer your bookmarks, and honestly you should get out of safari.  here are some steps to get the above to work and a few extra to keep you secure and safe, i had quite a scare last night because my roomate stupidly downloaded a virus and was afraid it could have captured my mtgox passwords and such.

1.  download firefox  http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

2. import safari bookmarks
-hit the orange firefox button > bookmarks > show all bookmarks
-a window will appear and browse to import and backup > import data from another browser

3. download these extension:
-greasemonkey: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/
-web of trust: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/wot-safe-browsing-tool/
-adblock plus: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/
-you can now drag and drop the zhoutonging price script into the broswer and it will install

4. to secure/encrypt your saved passwords
- firefox button > options > options
- create a master password

PS you can easily change the location of your tabs/bookmarks bar in firefox.

Work great here too, thank you. Could you make it also work with session login with www.bitcoinica.com? Thanks.

Thanks. I've updated the script to work with www.bitcoinica.com. Please re-download it.

could someone walk me through how to download it (on Safari if that makes a difference), I went to http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1127246/bitcoinica.user.js & see the script but have only ever downloaded things by pressing Download here buttons before, I could save it (the page?) & try & open it or something by I expect that's not how it works, sry for my tech noobness & thanks for any help

just drag and drop that file you downloaded into your browser it should install.   if you are using firefox you will need greasemonkey extension.
