5701  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Visa approves Coinbase as Principal Member - big step for mass adoption? on: February 25, 2020, 11:13:34 PM
Can't speak to the car rental for everyplace (I use a card that covers insurance) [dollar takes them see below] but for hotels the BitPay card works fine.
It also works fine for airline tickets.

Hmm. Not bad. I've destroyed enough American hire cars to know their system works rather differently from the European version. Many companies here base their business model off taking your credit card and stacking massive charges on it for damage that never existed weeks after you've given it back.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to hire without a credit card in Europe. They take a monster deposit from it too and only release it when they've figured out what they're going to steal.
About [redacted because I'm old] years ago but lets just say Polaroids were a thing I was working retail and we had a visit from high up corporate people. Just a standard visit from high up in the company. After they were done one of them asked if there was a place nearby where he could get some Polaroid instant film. I mentioned that there was a 1hr photo place in the mall but they would have to go across to Sears to get Polaroid film and that there was a camera in back they he could use. Nope, they were leaving for the airport and corporate policy was that they took pictures of the rental car from every angle when it was returned WITH A PERSON from the rental company in EVERY shot to prove the condition of the car upon return.

So, yeah it happens here too.

Back to the Coinbase / Visa thing. The biggest opponents of it I think are going to be the lightning network people. Why use lightning when you can just swipe your Visa and get all the benefits of using the card.

If you have not done KYC you probably hit the limit.
No KYC means no access to any of Coinbase's features as said above. Given the fact that OP has conducted transactions (see screenshot) he has walked himself through their KYC procedure already.

Sorry, I'm a bit out of date with what they require.
It used to be depending on where you were you could do basic KYC and get some really low limits and then had to give real ID and stuff like that for higher limits.

Did not know that it was 100% required now.

Not to hijack this thread but is there a place / thread that shows what exchanges require what KYC for what limits?
Might be nice for a sticky thread so we just have to point to it.

5703  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Warning becareful with coinbase. new problems found on: February 25, 2020, 12:32:16 PM
How long have you had your account?
Did you do KYC yet?
How much have you put though it if you have not done KYC?

If you have not done KYC you probably hit the limit.
IF you have done KYC then you might have hit received BTC from some place they did not like or sent it to some place that they did not like.

5704  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Is anybody using OWNR wallet? on: February 24, 2020, 05:22:27 PM
I have automatic updates turned off on my phone. I think Electrum does not even push out the latest version in the google play store, so I just downloaded and installed it directly from the website. Check the version number. (Maybe they have already updated it in the play store.)

So you have allow unknown sources and no automatic updates.
Not saying it's bad, but unless you don't have a lot on the phone you run the risk of having a vulnerable app stay the phone longer.

*Full honesty I have a device with more then the small amounts on it setup the same way but the only thing on it are 2 coin apps it is not used as a phone more of a "warm wallet"

5705  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Is anybody using OWNR wallet? on: February 24, 2020, 01:28:34 PM

That depends on the wallet you use (such as Electrum),
1. There's no automatic update if you use Electrum
2. You can use PGP verification (rather than hash) to verify integrity of the files. If someone who don't have the PGP private key attempt to upload malicious version of Electrum, PGP verification will fail and people will realize something is wrong.

It's only false security if you automatically believe open source = good/secure software. If you don't perform automatic update, always perform GPG verification and waiting someone to give feedback on newer version of application, i'd say it's more secure rather than blindly trusting closed-source wallet.
If a user don't do all of those when using open-source software, it's their fault.

With the desktop version yes, with the android version unless you have automatic updates turned off. It will auto update when they push something out.
With that being said it's been months and months since they did any updates to the android version.

But this does loop back to the original point, if you have BTC and only BTC or at most 1 or 2 alts then checking you wallets although time consuming is doable.
Looking at my coinomi wallet I have

BTC,LTC,ETH,DOGE,XMR,DASH and DFC

That would just get to be a full time job to keep up with them all.
So since there is not life altering amounts of money there. Heck it's barely weekend plans amount of money. I'll trust the precompiled closed source.
For the real money it's secured another way. YMMV in terms of amounts.

5706  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Advice on Raspberry pi hardware for running full BTC node on: February 24, 2020, 12:31:05 PM
That's pretty fast, looks like you're using quick mode rather than true full node according to mynodebtc.com/guide/sync_bitcoin_independently

Probably but there are a bunch of full nodes on the lan that it is on so it might just be sucking it down quickly.
It's a decent machine with SSDs so I'm not sure how it was pulling it. Quick mode shows error now so I don't know if was or not without going through the logs.

Also a CC is useful for other things. (Hotel reservations / car rental / etc.)

That's a credit card you need for that stuff. I'd be utterly amazed if Coinbase ever issue one of those. It'll only ever be debit cards.

Can't speak to the car rental for everyplace (I use a card that covers insurance) [dollar takes them see below] but for hotels the BitPay card works fine.
It also works fine for airline tickets.

I did DefCon a few years ago with nothing but BTC except for the rental car.
Hotel -> hotels.com giftcard purchased with BTC through egifter
Hotel -> Card to cover charges bitpay
Flight -> Delta Gift Card through I don't remember where
Cash in LV -> 1 face to face trade and 1 ATM

The next year I actually had put a fuckton of cash on the BitPay card for a deal that went bad so I paid for the hotel with it since it was sitting there anyway.

So as a debit card it works.

Dollar rent a car takes debit:

5708  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: missing 7 characters of a private key in Hexa format ; please help on: February 23, 2020, 06:07:41 PM
There is easy to use software for that:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5214021.0

Download and follow the instructions.
So long as you can install the software you can do it.

It might take a while depending on the speed of your setup but it does work well and you can ask in that thread for help.

7 or 8 wallets that are all open source but who has time to check the code and verify everything before installing all the new versions as they come out or just 1?

being open source is about being transparent not about every single user checking the code themselves. for example i have not really checked Electrum or bitcoin core source code (not extensively anyways) but i know that many others have and that is enough. but if it were a closed source wallet i know that nobody has ever seen the code or knows what it is doing.

Yes but as I posted someplace else, it's somewhat a false security.

Do you check the hash of the file you downloaded against what is posted?
Do you have automatic updates turned off on your phone and not update till people have verified the posted code is the same as what is in the app store / play store?

And as I posted in another thread unless there has been a 3rd party audit of how they push the update to the store this is all just security theater.

Think about it, if there are poor controls to upload the compiled file to the store then it's all pointless.
DaveF gets a job with bigwallet as their IT hardware person. It's open source, it's audited, it's amazing beautiful code.
Friday @ 4:30PM as everyone is leaving for the weekend I post a corrupt fund stealing compiled app to the app / play store and walk out of the building, head to the airport and fly to some island with no extradition. Saturday AM they have the bad wallet pulled but by then I have 1000s (10000s?) of BTC that were sent to me before anyone knew what happened. And I'm on a beach sipping drinks out of a coconut.

On the other hand the shitty closed source wallet needs 2 people with security dongles to log into the PC that updates the code that is in the app / play store.
You might not know what the code is, and it may be crap with bugs, but they at least know that what they wrote is what is up there.

However, since as far as I know NONE of them publish / publicly audit how they push updates to the stores it's all just trust.

You may feel differently. You may disagree. That is fine, but IMO it really needs to be discussed.

Nice, glad to see you've got it running. I'm having a tough time understanding this on a Rpi4
I've flashed the image to the SD card and plugged in the HD.
I'm stuck at the next set of instructions:
Quote
Once it's powered, visit http://mynode.local/ or http://mynode_ip_address/ in a web browser on your PC, laptop or phone. The myNode device runs a webserver, so to connect to it's GUI, you use a browser on a different device.
As far as I'm aware, myNode does not have an ip address yet as it's never been connected to the internet. Does this require a LAN cable connection? Or can I edit some file to connect to my wifi?
All I have is a blue screen with 'no signal' from the device.
Appreciate helping me understand.
What philipma1957 said.
Use a cable not Wi-Fi
There is 1 driver that would have to come with it to use the wired nic since all of of them are the same.
There are many more Wi-Fi drivers that would need to be setup if you wanted it to work out of the box.
Not to mention you would need a way to set the SSID and any credentials.

The VM I downloaded yesterday is still syncing. I'm @ block 501514 after about 24 hours.
This is on my laptop just doing a normal sync with nothing configured. Wanted to do a clean test.

Let me go digging on Monday.I'll get you a list of what I have.
Will have to test all of them. I have just been pulling and stacking them.
It's going to be a mix and match pile.

Heh, thought I PMd not replied in the thread. Was running too fast last night.
But, since it's posted lets keep it public.
Since I have to install the software and run the tests how about $65 shipped if they pass?

Probably will not have the time to install and run the tests for a few days.

-Dave

Hey Dave,

Would you mind if I sent you partial payment (I have $55 eth immediately available to send) and I tested them? I will have the rest at the end of the month when my next Storj payment comes.  In the unlikely event that one of the drives is bad,  I can let you Anydesk or Teamviewer in to see (because some people can be dicks and photohop a fake FAILED message lol.)

Either way send now or later is cool.

Yeah, that's fine.
I'll get them checked early in the week and send you the screen shots of the checks.
No use for 1TB drives? I have a bunch of them.

An opinion from someone who did once have a bitcoin full node on a 32 bit rPi quad core with a 64GB usb memory stick plugged in.

DON'T

--snip--

If you read through the thread you can see that it can be done. And is being done.
As of this posting I have

1) raspiblitz on a RPi4 [ 03400a67375da5d5d04dd59514452ce9f0cadb2fbec65863073897d52843b61c80@24.45.24.105:9735 ]
2) full node on a RPi3
3) full node with lnd on a RPi3

The biggest issues are still crap power supplies and slow drives. (Just get a good USB SSD and be done)

Yeah, for the time and effort involved you can get a few generations out old micro PC and be done.
This is more fun / more of a challenge can I do it.

5715  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Visa approves Coinbase as Principal Member - big step for mass adoption? on: February 22, 2020, 10:36:36 PM
We have to get services to accept bitcoin directly. I mean, if we're willing to give our identity away (KYC) and pay high fees (comparing debit cards to crypto), then why use bitcoin in the first place? Personally, I don't see this helping bitcoin in any way.
I agree--there's no anonymity and I don't think there's any advantage to this service that Visa is offering.  It's basically just a way for Visa (and probably Coinbase as well) to extract fees from their customers.  Same old story that's been going on since the beginning of credit cards, right?

Nice to see bitcoin gaining wider adoption--or possibly doing so--but I'm not sure this is going to catch on.

And I also agree that it would be so much better if merchants took bitcoin directly, but there's an obvious volatility risk involved, and I can understand why they wouldn't want to do that.  Even payment processors only convert bitcoin to fiat, which is what the merchant receives.  If I'm not mistaken, there are a few businesses that take crypto directly.  Overstock, Veldt Gold, and Protonmail are three of those, though I'm not sure if any of them still receive crypto directly.

Because at times KYC does not matter and having a hold over a merchant is good.
Using a CC a times with an online vendor you do not 100% trust is not a bad thing.

If you are ordering something they know where you live anyway.

Most of the time yeah, paying with BTC is better.
Sometimes other ways are better.

Also a CC is useful for other things. (Hotel reservations / car rental / etc.)

Guy's,

A quick note about MutliSig addresses pool support
MutliSig addresses starting with 3 are properly supported.
Addresses beginning with “M” are not supported

So as a rule of thumb the best option is to use L-addresses - Legacy Litecoin accounts for user name.
Best
Loshia

And his last post was about a month after this post.
And the last time he logged in was ~6 weeks after this post.
So if you use an M address you did not read this thread.

With that being said the domain is set to expire 10 months from now, so if the site stays up then someone is there.

Unless I am mistaken, and I'm sure there will be a ton of people here who will correct me.
There are no multi-alt-coin open source wallets for mobile.

Since this is in the bitcoin wallet section not the alt-coin wallet section, there are going to be different views.

Which comes back to the thought of if you are going to have a BTC wallet on your phone and 6 or 7 of the big alts on your phone which is better?
7 or 8 wallets that are all open source but who has time to check the code and verify everything before installing all the new versions as they come out or just 1?

And then you have all the different keys to store from all the wallets and everything else.

It's the loop of convenience vs. security.

5719  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Advice on Raspberry pi hardware for running full BTC node on: February 22, 2020, 01:17:04 PM
A couple days ago I came across myNode which seems to be a working open source solution to running a full node on RPi4 along with many other apps including lighting node/wallet and BTC explorer apps. I'll be dropping the idea of compiling a node on raspian and looking forward to getting this up and running.

Looks interesting. I am downloading the VM image now. If it looks nice I'll put together another RPi setup with an SSD to see how it goes.

US based or other?
If you are US I have a WD40PURX and a WD20EURS.
Before I put together something that can run WD Data Lifeguard / CrystalDisk how much would you offer shipped?
