581  Economy / Speculation / Re: Question about Bitcoinica on: January 21, 2012, 10:01:11 PM

A man noticed a farmer walking with three-legged pig on a leash. It looked very odd. He said, "Farmer, why are you walking a three-legged pig?"

"Why, stranger, this is no ordinary pig," the farmer replied. "One night our barn caught on fire, and before my wife and I even woke up, the pig had called the fire department, and herded all the other animals out of the barn. The next week, a burglar got into the house, and the pig had him tied up and the police were on their way before I even realized what had happened. Then just last week, I fell into the duck pond and was like to drown, except this pig jumped in and pulled me out. Like I say, this is no ordinary pig."

"Well, that truly is a remarkable pig. But tell me, how did he come to have only three legs?" "Are you kidding? A pig this good, you don't eat all at once."

I've found that the more time I spend in front of a monitor, the more likely I am to want to make a trade which typically leads to lost funds Tongue

^This.  Which raises the question of the longevity of trades.

The use of hourly data capture predisposes the trading longevity to short time frames (less than a week).
That is what I call "hard trading".   Over exposure to data and the emotional strain make it difficult to sustain.

Instead widen the time..... from hourly analysis to daily.

Hourly with 10/21 over 1 month. (fast)
http://bitcoincharts.com/charts/mtgoxUSD#rg30zigHourlyztgCza1gEMAzm1g10za2gEMAzm2g21zv

Daily with 10/21 over 2 months. (slow)
http://bitcoincharts.com/charts/mtgoxUSD#rg60zigDailyztgCza1gEMAzm1g10za2gEMAzm2g21

I simple trading strategy is to combine the two indicators:

i.e Use the slow indicator to determine your trend and the fast indicator to enter and exit.
When the "slow" is long, take all "fast buy" signals.
When the "slow" is short, take all "fast sell" signals.

The current price action from the 2 indicators suggest a "fast sell" into a "slow buy".  Which is not optimal but a good trader can scalp some change.

Aside:
The phenomenon of the "day trader/tick traders" used to be exclusively the domain of locals (private individuals with full licence to trade) on the exchange.
The Clinton era bull run brought the concept to the "masses".
Throw in HFT, Bitcoin's true 24 hour exchanges and volatility and the concept of "short time frame" trading becomes normal.

I would just like to remind all new traders that going to sleep with an open position is not meant to be a gut wrenching experience.

this is such great advise.  and this thread is epic!

wow this stuff is crazy!  so are you pretty much out of luck using this system until one of the 2 lines crosses to start a new position using the technique?

for example right now the bigger number (21) is above the lower (10) meaning its saying an uptrend.  I assume there is no way to use this system to predict when they may cross?

can you go into a little detail about what exactly 10/21 means?  how do i set btccharts up for EMA?

thx

too bad charts don't predict the future

Charts are very valuable as a future predictor, as you know other people are running the same analyses and using the same funny names to describe unpredictable market psychology.  You don't have to know what the market will do: you just have to know what the chartists will read into it and bet accordingly  Cheesy

The one thing we don't know is when someone will decide to meelba the market.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=60135.0

i wonder if the word meelba will be the new zhoutonged 2.0?

this is something i would really be interested in doing.  my parents are looking to buying some rural land in the midwest.  perhaps i can talk them into starting a large farm as my father grew up on one.  it seems like there is a bit of an investment to consider first, but hopefully thats what GLBSE can be used for.

subbed

forgive my noobness, but how do i sub as well?  i dont see any options.
598  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin's first industrial purpose on: January 19, 2012, 08:42:31 PM

Volia,  2 days later....

Clark and his colleague Aleksander Essex at the University of Waterloo, also in Ontario, realised they could convert a message - for example, a list of codes that securely link voters to their votes - into a Bitcoin address. Sending a tiny fraction of a bitcoin - a small transaction - to that address would allow the holder of that list to store it in the public record without revealing its contents. When they later publish the message for verification, anyone can repeat the conversion to a Bitcoin address and confirm its age by checking the public record.

Faking Bitcoin's public record would be very difficult as you'd need more computing power than the rest of the Bitcoin network combined - a feature that ensures the currency's security.

The pair have used their method, known as CommitCoin, to close a loophole in a voting system they helped develop. In the Scantegrity system, voters receive a confirmation code from the list that is cryptographically linked to their selected candidate and can be used to check on the election website that their vote is counted.

Now, if an unscrupulous election official tries to change votes they would be outed, because the code used to record the vote would change, and would not match up with the BitCoin network entry. "CommitCoin allows you to not trust anyone," says Clark.

When i first came here i came up with https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=56844.msg677567#msg677567.  an idea to use bitcoin and bittorrent as a new distribution model for music/movies.

Quote
I imagine a mesh of bittorrent technology and bitcoins ability to combat double spending. Instead of the p2p system of block sharing only consisting of tokens or whatever, could we not also use it as a torrent network? Perhaps this could be used to combat piracy and also evolve the old distribution model of media into a more efficient, secure system. I imagine somehow it could be set up so that if a user where to purchase a movie/song with a bitcoin and that his unique coin key would forever be identified with that user/purchase combination. Or perhaps every view costs a very small amount, I would have to understand how bitcoin works properly to find a way to implement its protocol in this instance but I feel there should be an easy way.

Bittorrent is currently working on technology that allows the streaming of movies through a p2p system. Once this technology advances this could potentially work.
Perhaps the massive Hollywood production firms could contribute computing power to run/mine the system and theoretically keep costs down to a minimum and passing the savings onto consumers.

Fans could create mining pools with the promise all proceeds could go towards funding a tv season/movie/album etc. To take that another step further new "Kickstart" services could pop up where screen writers/artists could pitch their creative ideas in hopes fans would join a mining pool to fund said project.  Pioneer One (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_One) could start doing this right now.
Does any of this sound feasible or am I just way too stoned?

after mulling over the idea a bit more perhaps something similar to the current torrent bitcoin website where users pay per GB in bitcoin and this is how your "account" is created for said file.  this way content creators get payed.

I've had a similar dream, as I frequented a few of these when I was a bit younger and always thought it was a great business.
