5881  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Transaction Fee Clarifications on: November 07, 2011, 04:30:49 AM
When Bitcoin sends a transaction, it makes sure the fee is greater than or equal to GetMinFee() with blocksize=1 and fForRelay=false.

It's probably pretty rare for a transaction to get stuck, since many miners rarely require fees. I never send a fee for my personal transactions.
5882  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Bitcoin Fog: Secure Bitcoin Anonymization on: November 07, 2011, 03:05:14 AM
More suggestions:

It should be possible to schedule a withdrawal even if the balance is 0. Once the balance is above 0 and properly confirmed, the BTC will be sent. Then I don't have to visit the site twice to do mixing.

I just received my two withdrawal transactions only 3 blocks apart, which seems too short.

It's good that you're not always sending with full precision, but it would be better to choose the amount of precision based on probabilities observed in the block chain. Looking at the last 10,000 blocks or so, the probability of an output having a certain number of decimals after the decimal point was:
- One decimal: 5%
- Two decimals: 21%
- Three decimals: 6%
- Four decimals: 8%
- Five decimals: 1%
- Six decimals: 1%
- Seven decimals: 5%
- Eight decimals: 47%

Do you think that all users will be able to only keep it at max 1 transaction per address?
Maybe we could at least start by changing the text on the deposit page that it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to change the address after each deposit.

Maybe use the current method by default, but have an option that enables the more anonymous method.

heh, bad example that prog actually works and i triple checked it just in case

They consider that tool to be malware itself.

They also list good sites like btjunkie.org and byethost.com, so I'm not too bothered by it. Anyone who blocks sites based on information from this list is an idiot.
5884  Other / Meta / Re: hphosts listing bitcointalk.org as Malware Distributer on: November 07, 2011, 02:16:14 AM
They say it's due to things like this:
https://bitcointalk.org/?topic=8403.0

I'll try to convince them to remove us, but I doubt it will work.

Edit: Yeah, they're of the opinion that any site allowing free discussion is a "malware distributor". I'm not going to deal with them any more. If you want to bother them about it, feel free.
5885  Other / Meta / Re: Why aren't advertisements displayed in non-default themes? on: November 07, 2011, 01:43:54 AM
The ads are a custom modification to the theme. I'm not going to modify all of the themes.
5886  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Transaction Fee Clarifications on: November 06, 2011, 11:16:53 PM
Sending/relaying a transaction never takes blocksize into account.

The latest version won't let you send transactions with incorrect fees. It can happen with old/modified/alternate versions that don't know the current fee rules, though. Transactions with too-low fees will be stuck at 0 confirmations for a long time.
5887  Other / Meta / Re: No more signature images on: November 06, 2011, 11:07:01 PM
i suggest instead of disabling them completely, making a rule to have max img button  size 120x60 and those longer tiny ones
then if someone puts something bigger just clear their sig with link to sig rules page.

This can't be enforced automatically, and it would be difficult to enforce through moderation.
5888  Other / Meta / No more signature images on: November 06, 2011, 08:39:25 PM
Signature images are making too much of a mess, so adding them is now disabled for everyone. Existing ones have not been removed, but they will be removed next time you change anything on that profile page.
5889  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Bitcoin Fog: Secure Bitcoin Anonymization on: November 06, 2011, 09:26:26 AM
Someone finally implemented the "easy" mixing method I described on the anonymity page!  Smiley This is the first service I know of that mixes properly.

Quote
To further anonymize your bitcoins you should change your deposit address every now and then. But don't to it while you are depositing money to the current account.

Anonymity is greatly reduced if there's more than one deposit at an address. It would be better to change it automatically as soon as a deposit is detected and not make the user deal with it.

There should be a way of deleting your account.

In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Your visible ad text (ignoring link URLs, etc.) must be less than 150 characters in length, and it can only contain links: no other style. It will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here. (One of the remaining slots has random factoids, and one links to the current ad auction.)

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats: On the 27th of September, 2011 there were about 730,000 views of topics. So one slot would have appeared around 73,000 times per day. The ad doesn't appear on topic pages with only one post, though, and it only appears for people using the default theme.

Most recent stats: On the 5th of November, 2011, there were about 124,000 views of topics. So one slot would have appeared around 12,400 times per day. The ad doesn't appear on topic pages with only one post, though, and it only appears for people using the default theme.

Info about the current ad slots:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you bid, all of your previous bids are automatically canceled.
- All bid prices must be divisible by 0.5.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction ends at 03:00:00 on November 13, UTC. Countdown
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slot may be sold to someone else.

5893  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: What to do in case of an attack on Bitcoin? on: November 06, 2011, 01:38:53 AM
Is it possible to pull error messages/alerts from RPC or out side the Bitcoin network?
I'd like to have a website where people can go to check up on the alerts?

Poll the getinfo "errors" field. Alerts (and other problems) will be put there.
5894  Other / Meta / Re: Topic title change on: November 05, 2011, 08:40:27 PM
It was incorrect, but all he did was change a topic title. Andrew Bitcoiner could have changed the title back at any time. It's not a big deal.
5895  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: What to do in case of an attack on Bitcoin? on: November 05, 2011, 06:06:05 AM
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Contingency_plans
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Alerts

a secure information channel over which merchants/exchanges could be informed so that they can (automatically) suspend accepting Bitcoin payments for the time of the attack

They can poll getinfo.errors to receive alerts. If there are any alerts, then the network is almost certainly broken. Alerts will only ever be sent for very serious issues.
5896  Other / Meta / Re: The Case against Solidcoin, and it's place on bitcointalk.org on: November 04, 2011, 11:16:01 PM
Gavin does have a warning sticky in alt currencies.

It's not the forum's job to protect users from dangerous people/services/ideas. You need to use your own brain. (I was initially opposed to the idea of responding in any way to scammers. I only created the scammer tag because it seemed that almost everyone expected scammers to be banned once identified, which caused otherwise-reasonable people to stop using their brains in some cases.)
5897  Other / Meta / Re: The Case against Solidcoin, and it's place on bitcointalk.org on: November 04, 2011, 06:32:08 PM
I don't agree that it was scamming. Lying is not scamming. He didn't make a contract with users, and users voluntarily ran closed-source software that could be centrally controlled.
5898  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BIP - Capitilizing on Bitcoin's Block Space. on: November 04, 2011, 02:13:02 AM
There are many ways, but here's one suggested by Satoshi:

why not make it easier on everyone and just allow say, 64 or 128 bytes of random data in a transaction?
That's already possible.  <pubkey> OP_CHECKSIG.  <pubkey> can be 33 to 120 bytes.
5899  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BIP - Capitilizing on Bitcoin's Block Space. on: November 04, 2011, 01:26:40 AM
What exactly is Unenforceable? Need help understanding.

You can put data into the block chain using standard transactions in ways that are undetectable. It's impossible to prevent people from putting arbitrary data into the block chain.
5900  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Getting unspent outs for arbitrary addresses from BlockExplorer. (Bounty 20BTC) on: November 03, 2011, 08:20:28 PM
What is pubkey-TX ?

Transactions can be sent directly to a public key instead of to an address. Some generation transactions do this.

The generations that pools like Eligius produce are actually address transactions, so they will be detected by mytransactions. Nowadays few individuals receive pubkey transactions.
