5901  Economy / Speculation / Bitcoin Price Crashes; $200 Next? on: January 29, 2015, 08:27:30 PM
After an impressive rise during the Coinbase euphoria, bitcoin price didn’t manage to remain near the reached peak levels. Although Bitfinex BTC/USD climbed up to $314 a bearish bias has started haunting the bitcoin price  once again. In the meantime, the 24 hour trading volume dropped by about 100.000 BTC

What do you think? Who'll win tomorrow's battle? Bears or Bulls?

Is WC creating another video? Let him know that I made a tutorial on how to render videos so it doesn't take 2 days to upload again.  Roll Eyes

To me, nubbins did an actual PSA, converting his free time to a public warning. Nubbins did the right thing. I think we need more people like him in this community.

I agree, but it seems the only person who doesn't is tecshare and WoodCollector's alts. Surprise surprise.

Aw, thanks, guys!

Rotten apples like WC ruin it for everyone. TECSHARE's chin-wagging doesn't affect me, because I know I did the right thing.

Don't mention it. Harassment is the last thing you'd need you receive for doing something good. Smiley

I think my post count on the doc is wrong. It would mean that I had a negative post count when I started or something. Here's my starting post

If your dox is posted here then chances are that it won't be taken down

I use this as an example, I'm sure there are other examples of posts that need to be taken down as well.
5907  Other / Meta / Re: Content leeching websites on: January 28, 2015, 08:20:46 PM
Simple question, but what if more sites like bitcointa.lk appear? Websites that leech and reupload content originally created in bitcointalk? Are we ever going to see any measures against such websites?

why do you think it is a problem...

i think sevices like this give to bitcoin and forum
who talk about bitcoin
much more visibility!!!

much visibility mean more bitcoin trader..
and the ecosystem grow up!!!

new people are involved into bitcoin business..

i do not see problems...

Several reasons,
1 they 'steal traffic' from this forum. (not my concern)
2 who knows if they're run by someone trusted (look at what dogie posted)
3 sometimes content NEEDS to be deleted.
4 almost all content posted here is original and 'leeching' websites never ask for permission to do what they do
5 it makes everyone less confident with what they post, since they know it'll be extremely hard for them to remove it from the internet after it's posted (this goes both ways)

3.1 Can you imagine your dox being posted here, and mirrored by 2-3 other websites too? Your personal info could be exposed online forever and you'd maybe have to mail the admin of a website in order to get it down.

Maybe more could be named.

To me, nubbins did an actual PSA, converting his free time to a public warning. Nubbins did the right thing. I think we need more people like him in this community. We all have some special knowledge on different topics. Sharing it will help the community in its entirety.

Now on this specific case, I think the evidence presented was quite convincing. You can't really say that it was a baseless accusation. Bitcointalk seems to have pretty decent understanding of who is a bad guy and who is not. This community usually comes to the right conclusion when appropriate evidence is presented.
5910  Economy / Speculation / Re: Something really fishy about the media couverage on: January 28, 2015, 07:37:27 PM
Fishy? More Fishy that the coverage claiming that Cypriots were transferring money into bitcoin while their money was LOCKED into banks? I don't think so. I'd rather say bad reporting.
So glad someone else realizes this. All of 2013 was complete manipulation with attribution to glorified news stories and unethical trading bots. Bitcoin's true value should not be more than $40-50 right now.

If the rumors are true, Mark K literally ruined Bitcoin.

You're surely not the only one that realized this. Every Greek and Cypriot knows about this. Hell even people that had an idea what was actually going on in Cyprus knew. People there had tiny withdraw limits for days. All until the huge cuts were made.

The dots didn't connect, there's no logical way Cypriots would have been "using bitcoin as an escape boat". The Greek community was almost nonexistent back then, I have only heard about a couple of Cypriots or so being aware of bitcoin to this day. There's no way this could have worked even as a concept.

Me myself being extremely pro-bitcoin back then didn't dare to speak out while I was seeing bitcoin growing. But now that the price craze has settled, I couldn't help but get this off my chest. Really, if they'd want to use the media for positive coverage they'd have to feed them with something that is at least realistically possible.

Syriza isn't liberal enough for bitcoin apparently. We'll have to deal with it. Bitcoin will probably never gain mainstream interest in Greece. And that's a sad realisation to come to especially since I'm Greek.

5914  Economy / Reputation / Video rendering tutorials by alani123: WoodCollector special on: January 27, 2015, 03:45:29 PM
You do know that video, even compressed was about 2 GB right? It took nearly 2 days to upload and process.

Sorry for only replying to this part of your post, but as someone who does video editing I can't resist giving my two cents on this.

To be brief: Any and I mean ANY video can be reduced to a few hundred megabytes with proper compression.

There's no way uploading a 1 hour and 20 minutes video could take 2 days. And WC is no exception to that, he has no excuse. He could have simply googled "video compression" and found a technique in 2 minutes instead of waiting 2 days to "upload".

Just my 2 cents.
Can you download his video and re-upload it in a few hundred megabytes while still maintaining sufficient picture quality?

It would help prove your point and help those of us with slower internet.

Since WC had to drop everything and produce the video to prove himself as an expert, I expect you do drop everything you are doing right now and produce a "few hundred megabyte" version of WC's video for us all to see. Since you are a video editor it should be no problem or maybe you are misrepresenting yourself and deserve a negative reputation also?

Since I don't want to derail the original post, I'm taking this here.

As requested above, I'll be downloading his video directly from youtube. I thought it would be quite fun.

Detailed updates on the process to follow.

Stel 1: Downloading the video
First things first, I'm using some freeware to download the video as mp4 from youtube. (Downloading starts as soon as I post this.)

Background: In layman's terms, .mp4 on its own is a good file format if you want to save space. Many professional cameras and software don't record directly in mp4, but the video can easily be converted into .mp4. A conversation that will allow us to compress the video and reduce it's size even further using different tools as we go on.

Step 2: New Codec and final result

It wasn't that hard was it? Nearly lossless conversion (and some color correction too) but it now takes nearly half the space than the original. Imagine how much space rendering would have saved if we were rendering an .avi file that has minimal to no compression.

Original: Vs Rendered:

Only tool used for this is Handbreak and it's H.264 codec. Handbrake is open source too!

Hope ~500Mb/h of video is a decent rate for you. Feel free to use the information above as you like (Just remember that I posted this mainly for fun purposes).

5916  Economy / Digital goods / Re: 100€ Google adwords credit. Anyone interested? on: January 26, 2015, 10:43:08 PM
So I recently renewed a domain+hosting plan and I was given a free Google AdWords credit code. I have no use for it at the moment. Does it have any sell value?

your subject states adsense but your post says adwords?

if it is a straight up $100 dollars than it has value but if it is one of those were you have to spend $25-$50 to activate than probably not because you can get those for free from time to time.

Yeah, I fixed the mistake in the title. Thanks for the reply.

Xrumer and many forum posting bots has built in OCR or Optical Character Recognition which enable the bots to read the captcha.

I noticed that the current camptcha system for registering accounts is quite different than the one used before.

It looks like this and each leter consists of a different image now. Maybe that's supposed to be more secure? I still see the same letters after several reloads though.
5920  Other / Meta / Re: bot made accounts on: January 25, 2015, 12:17:20 PM
-snip-
As I mentioned in a post I made about this, those accounts are probably made so websites can have backlinks.
-snip-
Turns out the forum is vulnerable and someone is abusing this vulnerability to practice his blackhat SEO techniques.

Google updated the page rank algorithm in late 2013/early 2014 IIRC. With that update spammed backlinks are no longer a valid form to increase the rank of a page. There even was a wave of spammers that begged popular blogs to remove their spam posts, quite funny.

You must be referring to the panda/penguin updates. However, PR6 forum backlinks are still considered valuable by many. I'm not sure how the updates actually would have affected them but I'm still seeing them being sold here and there.
