61  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin with Raspberry Pi on: May 22, 2013, 03:44:52 PM
Just make it restart every hour, or put it in the loop so it will start up right after the crash. I have solved my electrum server stability issues with that and I was never woken up by alert from monitoring again. Smiley

63  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: What would be a good server host to run an exchange on? on: May 17, 2013, 06:50:51 PM
Never use VPS to run bitcoin exchange or mining pool. Never. If you do, prepare to cover the losses from attacks from your own pocket. Buy your own hardware, or rent a dedicated server without access through any kind of centralized control panel.

67  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Wallet Issue on: May 12, 2013, 10:40:24 PM
By "reinstalled" you mean OS reinstall?
Then they're probably gone.
There still is a small chance to recover it. Shut down the computer as soon as you read this, put the disk onto another machine (or boot from some Linux live CD) and wait for some skilled bitcoiners to find this thread and give you advice on how to possibly recover the lost wallet.
68  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How were my encrypted wallets hacked? I even used truecrypt and dummy wallet.dat on: May 12, 2013, 09:24:47 PM
Sorry to hear that.
Password protected wallet and truecrypt container might bring the false feeling of security.
In fact to be able to use the wallet you have to mount the hidden volume so the system can see what's inside, and to be able to spend the coins, you have to type the password.
Simple malicious code can wait until you connect the truecrypt volume, copy the wallet, and then wait until you make a transaction to copy your password.

some of the bitcoins in your wallet were invalid(faked bitcoins)
There is no such thing as faked bitcoins. You can easily verify all informations displayed by your client on blockcexplorer or blockchain.info The transaction looks pretty real to me.

Try to reconnect to different server and restart the client.
70  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin needs to be simplified for the stupid. on: May 09, 2013, 07:05:53 AM
For "stupid" you need to have a bank with full control over customers money. Which will also destroy all advantages of Bitcoin over PayPal-like services.
Without 3rd party organization, there is a chance they will loose the wallet, forget the password, install a virus, damage a trezor device, lost the paper with seed... Who will be blamed when such things happen? "BAD, BAD Bitcoin!"

Don't trust me? Just look at how many tech. skilled people had their savings on InstaWallet or MyBitcoin.
71  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: ASIC BFL. is the end of the BTC? on: May 08, 2013, 12:37:05 PM
If LTC will be as sucessfull as BTC, it's just a matter of time when average PC will mine next to nothing. Because it's not important what hashing algorithm is used, but how much $ are big players able to invest. And "advantage" over BTC will be gone...

75  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where r my coins? on: May 06, 2013, 10:05:13 PM
Just open command line, cd to the directory where bitcoin-qt is installed by doing:

cd "C:\Program Files\wherever_it_is\"
bitcoin-qt.exe -rescan
76  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where r my coins? on: May 06, 2013, 09:58:23 PM
What about -resync parameter? Is it still needed on 0.8.X after wallet change?

edit: Of course I meant -rescan.

I simply closed the client, replaced the existing wallet.dat by the new encrypted one
Was it also on Live CD? Was the blockchain synchronized?

There is chance that he brought some virus on the USB flashdisk unintentionally.

I think we will fail as a society when I read topics like this.
Never allow random dude plugging things to your computer if it's not good friend or close relative.
Never allow any bitcoiner plugging things to your computer even if it's good friend or close relative.

Also you should watch this project: bitcointrezor.com
It's physical USB device which can save you from scams like this in the future (It's not ready yet). Device can hold your private keys and it show transaction details on internal LCD display when making a transaction. Transacton is created & broadcasted only after you press the confirmation button on the device itself. If there is something wrong wit the transaction, you can just switch to secure PC and try again. Also physical wallet cannot be copied. It has to by stolen physically to do any harm.

I find it hard to imagine how the same government that can't even do a simple budget is going to take on the world bitcoin economy.
Exactly this!

Oh how I wish I was an conspiracy theorist. Those people are capable of believing that some highly organized structures lead by highly intelligent and responsible leaders can actually exist... and remain secret.
Just look at the stories from cold war, or check out details of any historical military operation. All one big unorganized mess.

It would be far cheaper for them to just buy up all the available bitcoins and then hoard them
Yes, please. Do it! I love this kind of attack Cheesy

So practically you are saying their value will be so high that they would be worthless?
