I think we're getting a little OT up in here.

Nonetheless, and in the final analysis all three parties, seller - buyer - middleman are involved and therefore share in some of the moral and legal implications of their actions.  I think this is particularly relevant in regards to this system which from what I've seen doesn't even make as much effort as the pron industry in preventing underage access to, what should be, adults-only products.  And even then, there are other concerns about true quantities, dosage and ingredients / adulterants of already potentially fatal narcotics.

As someone passionate about drug legalization and from the apparent level of higher-than-average intelligence I see on this board, it needs to be clearly stated exactly what the ramifications are of engaging in this business model, no matter what your particular role in it may be.
As you and others have pointed out, the Silk Road model does have risks and deficiencies. However, it does offer a great improvement over the traditional, albeit stereotypical, model of buying from shady dealers in crumby places. The Silk Road model even offers improvements with respect to denying access to children. Because the products come through the mail, parents have a better chance of intercepting them and confronting junior on the matter.

I would recommend though that the Silk Road folks add a link at the top of each product category page to the relevant page on Erowid or an equivalent source. Doing so can only help. We can't win this "war" without education.

CIA agents and persons of interest always have a way of getting into unfortunate ...auto-erotic asphyxiation mishaps...
Gavin, now is your chance to avenge David Carradine. Have you kept up with your swordplay?
64  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: A Heroin Store on: June 04, 2011, 03:51:18 PM
Realistically the seller is not the one at risk if the item is placed in the mail. The buyer takes all the risk.
What risk? Anyone can send almost anything to anyone else through the mail.

What is to stop me from ordering a bunch of illegal stuff and having it sent to my political rival's house and then making an anonymous tip.
Nothing. It probably already happens to politicians and the like. If such a defense will work for them, it should also work for commoners.

http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2011/06/libertarian-dream-a-site-where-you-buy-drugs-with-digital-dollars/239776/

If you visit the bitcoin wiki page on anonymity --
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Anonymity -- the first sentence is

While the Bitcoin technology can support[link] strong anonymity,
the current implementation is usually not very anonymous.

With bitcoin, every transaction is written to a globally public log, and the lineage of each coin is fully traceable from transaction to transaction. Thus, /transaction flow/ is easily visible to well-known network analysis techniques, already employed in the field by FBI/NSA/CIA/etc. to detect suspicious money flows and "chatter."  With Gavin, bitcoin lead developer, speaking at a CIA conference this month, it is not a stretch to surmise that the CIA likely already classifies bitcoin as open source intelligence (no pun intended).

Further, if Silk Road truly permits deposits on their site, that makes it even easier for law enforcement to locate the "hub" of transactions.

Attempting major illicit transactions with bitcoin, given existing statistical analysis techniques deployed in the field by law enforcement, is pretty damned dumb.  Smiley

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! Now I think this is great in theory...but what the FUCK people?!?!? REALLY!?? Honestly thinking this is a legit way to do things...lmfao
So, authorities can follow transactions between addresses with no names attached to them that, in the case of Mt. Gox and Silk Road, don't get reused. How would they find that useful? How is that less secure than cash in the mail?
66  Other / Off-topic / Re: Key-signing party! on: June 03, 2011, 02:23:41 AM
Not quite.  I want in, I'm still trying to figure out what the hell I'm doing.  I'm reading through the GNUPG Quick Start but even that is like trying to read another language.  I just learned about PGP a few days ago and am still trying to figure out the procedures.  So far I've created a key in Ubuntu using the "Passwords and Encryption Keys" program which I believe is part of the Seahorse front end package for GNUPG.  So now, how do I use this to encrypt emails, sign other people's keys, etc?  Also, where are these alleged online key directories?  I can't find them.  Sad  Help me and I will sign all your keys.
Make sure you have "Decrypt File" installed and restart Ubuntu.

Not that we need it, but I checked to see if Wolfram-Alpha understood bitcoins yet. It does not.
68  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gavin will visit the CIA on: June 02, 2011, 08:32:05 PM
Good, ill bring the coke, unless everyone prefers pepsi.

It is not open to the public, conference is for the US intelligence community only.
69  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Gavin will visit the CIA on: June 02, 2011, 07:45:43 PM

thanks mcgruder. i just want to share my hobby with people. the other dude didnt need to be a dick.
Hey man, an injury to one is an injury to all.

I just checked and the site is up. I forgot how much I hate the use of the Thai bhat symbol for bitcoin. Why, Silk Road, why? But I digress. Try this link if BitterTea's doesn't work. Tor can be finicky, so be patient.
71  Other / Archival / Re: Silk Road: anonymous marketplace. Feedback requested :) on: June 01, 2011, 08:22:30 PM
If you're too retarded to figure it out we don't want you there. There's already been a bunch of articles about it published which will probably ruin the site.
FFS don't be such a bogart.

iv followed all the steps. ive downloaded tor, its running. i close and reopen fire fox and then click on the link again to go to it and it says its down till july 1st. i have a MacBook Pro. is there anything else i need to do?
If that's what Silk Road's Tor Hidden Service (the .onion site) says, then you'll just have to wait.
72  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and Youth on: June 01, 2011, 08:05:32 PM
I think this is great and we'll have less idiots in the world. Kid, who swallows too many pills, doesn't live to reproduce. Darwin would be proud of Bitcoin
Anthony Weiner doesn't recognize photos of his genitals. Chris Farley would be proud of him. Makes perfect sense.
73  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and Youth on: June 01, 2011, 07:21:28 PM
Being a BitCoin consultor for DEA or other goverment anti-drugs organizations will probably be an interesting and really well paid job.
Yeah, for narcs.
74  Bitcoin / Press / Re: Bitcoin press hits, notable sources on: June 01, 2011, 07:19:52 PM
Silk Road scare mongering.
I hope you're not referring to me there.

I know Silk Road has a lot of support here, but it does not really require bitcoin - it could work with cash in the same manner and be even more secure.
Buying drugs through the mail is nothing new. I am unconvinced though that mailing cash payments is more secure than making payments with Bitcoin. Off topic though. Pretty sure we have other threads for that.
75  Bitcoin / Press / Re: Bitcoin press hits, notable sources on: June 01, 2011, 06:46:18 PM
Welp, we just made it to Wired: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2011/06/silkroad/
76  Other / Obsolete (buying) / Re: I have almost $10,000 worth of bitcoins to sell, at 10%+ discount to Mt Gox on: June 01, 2011, 01:15:44 PM
Hello McGruder,

Is that possible? I would love to do that! When I looked in their trade data history I was seeing amounts for $10, $100, and maybe in the hundreds, but nothing like my amount. I just presumed no one was trading in the amount that I have there. I really don't know a lot about bitcoin, I basically bought some as a punt awhile back and want to cash out now whilst I'm ahead.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the liquidity!
Cheers,
Marc
I think there are enough bids on bitcoins at or above 7.20USD/BTC (20% of 9USD/BTC) to make it happen. I recommend making your ask order with the "Dark pool and Normal" setting. I suppose if someone wants to take you up on your offer outside of Mt. Gox, you could just can just cancel your Mt. Gox sell order.
77  Other / Obsolete (buying) / Re: I have almost $10,000 worth of bitcoins to sell, at 10%+ discount to Mt Gox on: June 01, 2011, 12:29:31 PM
I bought in a few months ago, and now wish to cash out. For offers to purchase $1000 worth or more I'll offer a 10% discount to that day's market price, and for my entire stock a 20% discount. I'm open to your suggestion of preferred payment method and mechanism, but won't work via PayPal for these kinds of amounts.

Why don't you just sell those bitcoins at your discounted rate on Mt. Gox?
78  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: selling drugs and money laundering: the potential downfall of bitcoin on: May 31, 2011, 01:25:08 PM
There are faster and easier ways to commit suicide.
Sure, but even in that regard, we have more freedom to make that choice than chattels. I can imagine a slave owner resorting to gavage to preserve a recalcitrant investment, but the IRS, not so much.
79  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: selling drugs and money laundering: the potential downfall of bitcoin on: May 29, 2011, 01:45:52 PM
Yes, taxation is slavery. A portion of your time, represented by money, is taken from you by force or the threat thereof.
Well, you can choose not to earn taxable income, to not work. I don't think chattels enjoyed as much choice in that regard.
80  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Courier Network (For real) on: May 29, 2011, 02:48:27 AM
What about floating container with an anchor? The seller would leave it somewhere in the ocean and then give its coordinates to a buyer. It would would like a meatspace Loom. Although, that idea isn't very robotic. I think the container would have to remain totally submerged, only to release its anchor and rise to the surface when the buyer came along and emitted a signal of some sort. There: kind of robotic.

...but not much of a courier.   Undecided
