61  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | SuperNET | MOBILE MESSAGING | OPAL DRIVE | HTML5 WALLET on: December 16, 2014, 07:40:02 PM
Here's a scenario that I'm wondering how we're going to address:

1. Bob has an OPAL wallet with 100,000 opal, that is not protected with a passphrase

2. He downloads a malware wallet, which copies his wallet.dat and forwards it to the hacker

3. The hacker empties this wallet and transfers his opal away and dumps the private key for "future use".

4. A roll back occurs

5. Bob now has 100,000 opal back in his wallet again

6. A few seconds later, the hacker empties this wallet again, because he has the private key from step #2

How are we going to circumvent this from occurring.

I fully support the rollback. If anyone can make this work, is the Opal dev's and community.

People, please scan your computers fully before the rollback takes place.

We have to design a procedure where someone's wallet.dat was stolen and it was not protected with a passphrase.  If we roll back, doesn't the hacker still have the privkeys to the addresses stored in the wallet.dat?

Let's do this patiently and methodically.

I just want to say I think that a rollback in this early stage of this coin, will kill it. I prefer having the hacker dump a slice of coins now and then, and keep Opal alive.

Yes, I'm sure we can expect that the hacker will be ethical in his dumping them, since he was so ethical in stealing them too.

I'll let the devs figure it out. I've said my bit, and don't want to hog this thread. This is my last word until the roll back happens.
64  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | SuperNET | MOBILE MESSAGING | OPAL DRIVE | HTML5 WALLET on: December 16, 2014, 09:56:06 AM
I'm fully aware of NXT, and it's network and support is far from dead. They paid a hacker ransom.

Since you're in favor of the hacker keeping the OPAL, I assume you want us to pay him a ransom too like NXT/bter did to get them back?
65  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | SuperNET | MOBILE MESSAGING | OPAL DRIVE | HTML5 WALLET on: December 16, 2014, 09:50:33 AM
The hack is a very serious setback, but a rollback is certain death for OPAL. The hacker wants money, not 51% to kill OPAL

You can still get money by killing Opal as you dump (or double-spend attack) at the same time. Your logic is flawed.  Also please stop referencing 51%, that is for Proof-of-work attacks, not Proof-of-stake, which needs much less.

Reading your past posts, you sound like you either are the hacker, or know the hacker based on how hard you're fighting for him to keep his coins.

Just my own personal opinion.
66  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | SuperNET | MOBILE MESSAGING | OPAL DRIVE | HTML5 WALLET on: December 16, 2014, 09:39:25 AM
This isnt true. He only holds about 17%. Which I agree is alot, but far not enough for a 51% attack.

You don't need 51% to do a double spend.

You need 51% to fork the network to your own chain, that's different.

With a large percentage of coins, you can still do a double spend a single transaction if you manage to create a lot of POS blocks in a short amount of time since most exchanges only wait for 6 or 10 block confirmations. That's what checkpointing is suppose to solve within the block confirms.

There's still a world of hurt that can happen with 17% of the entire coinbase owned by a hacker.

Read this post: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=604716.0

I still vote (and have voted) rollback.
67  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | SuperNET | MOBILE MESSAGING | OPAL DRIVE | HTML5 WALLET on: December 16, 2014, 09:21:54 AM
A rollback is important.

If he has 2.5 million of these coins, he's going to either dump them at strange times, hurting the growth of opal, or he's going to stake them, and take away a lot of POS block creation from all of you.

Worse yet, he could fork the chain with stake and create a double spend attack, even just to corrupt the network.

A rollback is the only solution here.

...keep in mind that the hacker is reading these forums and may have sock puppet accounts that are saying "No to rollback", be weary of that too..

Until a rollback occurs I can't possibly buy any more Opal knowing that one of the richlist is an evil thinking hacker who obtained these "for free" and will value them like that..

Note to devs, from now on, all wallet releases must reference the website: www.opal-coin.com or github, and that's it. No direct links..
68  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANNOUNCEMENT:MANDATORY WALLET UPDATE on: December 15, 2014, 02:27:41 AM

A few questions:

1. I'm assuming the github still allows you to compile the wallet from source and run it on Linux, correct?

2. Does this wallet release fix the blockchain reorg issue? Has it been already tested on a testnet?

3. Since we're tied in with NXT through SuperNET, does that mean we're going to be running java wallets, or will it remain a C++ wallet?

Can someone from Opal answer these questions for me please?

1 - Release a new working wallet

Yes, this is the basic of any reputable coin. As it stands, we're not reputable.

2 - Create a blocks explorer

There are plenty of multi-block explorers out there will happily add NRS if you gave them a working wallet, that builds from source, (without having to copy files all over the place), and a few BTC.

The chain needs to start from genesis. Not at block 719 or 739 or whatever it is..

3 - Add 2.0 nrs to markets exchange

I suggest this be #4

4 - Update this thread and the main site
I suggest this be #3

Everything else can wait.... you're building a cathedral in the desert ...

I believe he's building something in the desert.  In crypto all you really have is reputation. I know his RL is busy, but his development is so erratic and not very solid. It's difficult to watch. Sad
71  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | SuperNET | MOBILE MESSAGING | OPAL DRIVE | HTML5 WALLET on: December 13, 2014, 11:14:38 PM

They shouldn't freeze coins on an exchange without providing a reason. That's terrible.
72  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | SuperNET | MOBILE MESSAGING | OPAL DRIVE | HTML5 WALLET on: December 13, 2014, 09:59:39 PM

If I listen carefully, I can almost hear the voice behind the music.

LOL. I had no idea that this is an Android wallet with chat built in.  Watching the video, I thought it was just a chat app.

We need to address the fact you can send/receive coins AND chat at the same time.  Regular chat apps don't do that.. This is a novelty and we need to capitalize that it is:

1) A cryptocurrency wallet for Opal

2) A "secure" chat app (and explain how it's secure vs regular chat apps)

Give some examples of who might want to use this for "legitimate" reasons in the video. Show it solving a problem.

Ie: Without the opal wallet, you would have to do that...  (show insecure chat, show someone sending a moneygram or mailing a check)

But with the opal wallet, NOW you can do this, and it's easier, faster, and more secure..

The opal wallet should also have an information page on it, you click the link that says "Get Opal Coins"..  Then it just has a text screen that talks about:

a) A faucet

b) An exchange

c) Links to the opal website, maybe a talk forum, etc.

I could see someone downloading the wallet, and then scratching their head on how to get coins into it.

73  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | SuperNET | MOBILE MESSAGING | OPAL DRIVE | HTML5 WALLET on: December 13, 2014, 07:37:28 PM

All of these "intro" videos on youtube that are nothing more than music and some moving graphics aren't helping much.

We need to educate the public, and for that, we need videos that show how to use the app, the benefits of using it vs regular chat systems.

We're at the point where we need a growing user base, and without video tutorials, we're going to be stuck in the shadows.

For instance, this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMdr8JTAnDg

It looks cool, but has no substance really. We need to demonstrate how the app works, and why they should get it.
74  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | SuperNET | MARKETPLACE | ANDROID | FILE SHARING | HTML5 WALLET on: December 04, 2014, 03:57:50 PM
No need to sell the UNITY
Since you are new to all this, just put some small amounts into different things. The SuperNET/UNITY is quite boring as far as crypto standards go. All during the bear market it was +/-15% or so, the downs will be less and the ups, well I think it will be more like a turtle, but you never know on the upside.

OPAL can 10x again and while SuperNET can also, it would be much more difficult for a SuperNET 10x than an OPAL 10x. The other assets are all very very different, so each one needs to be understood and some are trading on multiple markets, there could be cross market arbitrage. It is really no simple answer

James

In my opinion:

So if you want to save your money and hold it into something other than BTC, UNITY is a good buy, because it is designed with price stability in mind.

If you want to grow your money with something, choose the best SuperNET coin partner (like Opal for instance) to buy some coins with..

Shocked

Time to stop mining... I mined more than 9000 nrs in a week  Grin

Congrats! I'm glad you single handedly own so many of those coins.

Maybe now you can help encourage Barwizi to release a proper Linux wallet that can sync from block 0, instead of having to play this Blocks.7z game which will confuse everyone.

As it stands, very few people are going to want to buy any of those 9000 nrs off you, if the wallet doesn't work right.

Unless of course, this is a "Windows Only Coin".  Maybe that's Barwizi's plan.   IT works on Microsoft Windows computers only. Smiley

Pump and dump games flashed me once again Smiley. Good I lost only 0.1 on this crap. I see this coin declining further and further in the coming days/weeks.

Too bad for you if you don't have vision, I see this coin growing in coming days/week.  Smiley

You misread him.  When someone says publically "I see this coin declining further and further" what it usually means is:

"I hope you all sell for a cheap price, so I can buy back in and recover my 0.1 btc losses"

Don't worry PhilipMorris, anytime right around now is a decent price to still get in.. No need to spread FUD.

for the layman out there. What is so good about superNET??

Read Post #1741 and also #1742 in this thread.  It explains the benefit of SuperNET.

Don't speed read through it, or glance over it. The information is right in those two important posts.

In short: Any SuperNET sponsored coin, can use any other coin's features.  Devs are shared among all SuperNET coins as one big group.  Holders of SuperNET coins can enjoy the fruits of all coindev labor across all coins.  It's a sharing of technology.
78  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] NoirShares UPDATE REQUIRED Advanced Features✔, Unique PoW✔ on: December 03, 2014, 10:54:04 PM
the right chain is in 7709....

my wallet has been working since the update has been released!

Sorry to tell you, I think you're on the wrong chain.

If you download the latest git, and sync Blocks.7z to the first 739 blocks, and the hard coded checkpoint at block 128, you'll see that the chain at block 7709 is invalid.

So either:

a) The git has a corrupted wallet  (unlikely)

OR

b) You started your wallet without doing the Blocks.7z thing correctly and you are on a longer, but unofficial chain.

i have found a 2222.20 block...

By the sounds of things, you found a 2222.20 block that is worthless on the wrong chain. Tongue

Too bad you didn't have an official block explorer on the official chain to see if your wallet address shows that value.

79  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ANN: [OPAL] | SuperNET | MARKETPLACE | ANDROID | FILE SHARING | HTML5 WALLET on: December 03, 2014, 10:14:47 PM

Is what I've said correct?

Yes, completely correct.

Wow, I just got goosebumps. It's actually designed very well, and makes a lot of sense now.

Translation to those watching:

Buy up your Opal. In my opinion it is only going to get better as our strong dev team turns into an even stronger dev team on steroids which brings more value to Opal. We can to use that stored Opal wealth with the rest of the SuperNET.

Is what I've said correct?

yes
[...] SuperNET will magnify the best coins.

Yes, I believe it will.  I do like the term "magnify".

Opal for the win. Smiley

Other than boobs, is there anything to talk about?

How about a block explorer? Is there one yet?

I guess you have not been to the website. we have 2 block explorers, paper wallet, Forum and chat, IRC, World map for clubs being added, etc etc

I was looking at the OP (first post on this thread), no block explorer was mentioned. It might be nice to put a separate heading for Block Explorers and list the two of them there.

Thanks, that helps a lot.
