61  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: May 03, 2014, 10:06:01 PM
I've only looked into NXT for a short period but as I see it, the 75 initial "shareholders" are being way too stingy.  If you want adoption, you need to get coin out reasonably easily, a fair amount (not some piddly 2-4 NXT), and quickly.

Look at the amount Ripple gave away early on, you taper after you get some sort of base, not before.

Right now you have the faucet, which gives out a laughable 2-4 NXT (allowing you to do TWO transactions), another faucet that pays out a FRACTION of ONE NXT the vast majority of the time and the exchanges.  Exchanges, I might add, that are based in countries like Panama and have ridiculous withdrawal policies like:

Quote
Bitcoin deposits are credited immediately, and released for trading after 1 confirmation. NXT Deposits are credited on customer accounts every few business hours, after approx. 8 to 12 hours outside business hours GMT. Bitcoin withdrawals are instant (2.8% fee) or 3-24 hours (1.4% fee). NXT withdrawals take between 6 to 24 hours as a general guideline, sometimes up to 48 hours.

48 hours?  C'mon.

I realize the developers are not involved in all of these faucets/exchanges but clearly you need to have a more efficient way of getting NXT to a new user (lets call it a starter pack).  NXT at this point is next to worthless, with an exchange rate of .00005BTC or something similar, stop holding onto the stuff like it's gold.  You're only hurting yourselves in the end.

if you think it's valuable, then you should buy some.  -bm

The point is, like most new users, I don't know if it has value as I can't test the system.  You need to allow users to properly test the system (and no 2 NXT doesn't count) in order for them to make up their minds on whether it's a worthwhile investment.

Buy some?  Dgex has that stupid withdrawl policy I quoted.  Cryptsy has a thread in this very forum about pissed off customers not getting their NXT amongst other alt-coins and Bter when I go to their "about us" page is all in Chinese.

I'm not going to trust some sketchy exchange just to test out something.

63  Economy / Goods / Re: [Sell] VFirm - VAGINAL TIGHTING CREAM: Price 0.10 BTC per tube on: May 02, 2014, 07:50:56 PM
I love how the two people in this thread trying to get other people's BTC proceed to totally wreck each others credibility with their childish back and forths.
64  Economy / Goods / Re: [Sell] VFirm - VAGINAL TIGHTING CREAM: Price 0.10 BTC per tube on: May 01, 2014, 09:28:44 PM
Will this work on my beat up fleshlight?

Bitpop maybe it is time to put away that fleshlight and find a real vagina.
By the way, I fuck for BTC.

Hey bitpop, I think you just found an upgrade to your fleshlight.  Well, maybe... we haven't seen any pics yet.
65  Economy / Economics / Re: Could use an advice 2BTC/Month on: April 30, 2014, 11:32:03 PM
Hey guys, currently with my hashing power i'm making 2 btc each month.
the question is what would you do with those 2 btc? my mining is not my main income so i don't mind saving my bitcoins on the side for now.

do you think btc will go above 450-500$? I mean way above
would you buy VTC with them? cause i heard they will worth a lot a year from now.

or should i just change them to money? what would you do?

thank you

Depends on your situation and your appetite for risk.  If you don't need the money and aren't afraid of risk, hold all of it.  If you don't need the money and are okay with some risk, sell 1 BTC, save 1 BTC.  If you hate risk, sell every month.
66  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Priceing things in BTC on: April 28, 2014, 07:14:31 PM
I think its hard to price things in BTC when the exchange rate changes so much, especially as its tied to a fiat exchange rate and the product is priced in that currency. Therefore the BTC price is constantly changing and the fiat price is not.

Will BTC ever break free from the conversion to fiat values?
Some people think this is a high priority, but for now it's hard to do in the "real world".

I don't think it will but I also don't think it's really necessary.  Gold as an example, is still expressed in terms of value by it's conversion to fiat yet still serves its purpose.
67  Economy / Services / Re: [WTS] Method to get ~0.04 BTC every day. on: April 28, 2014, 01:01:26 AM
The "method" probably has something to do with Google Adsense or something similar.  For those of us who have been around, we've seen this many times over.
68  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you agree with this? USD, Not Bitcoin, Is The Next Digital Currency on: April 28, 2014, 12:46:01 AM
maybe not USD but fiat is better then Bitcoin.

Lets be honest most Bitcoin holders are in it for the fiat, everyone talks about BTC's 'value' based on its price in USD and not its value as a currency. now its hit over $1000 (in the past), people sat up and listened not whne u could buy a coffee with it.

Bitcoin doesn't allow micro-transactions, Fiat no problem. Fees with Bitcoin even if I am sending to another of my own wallets, Not with Fiat.

People will say but electronically the banks charge, well I don't what bank your using but I've had fee free banking for many years.

Fiats even more fairer distribution.

Bitcoin (due to its non inflationary design) maybe a better store of wealth longterm then fiat, which is it only real benefit, but thats more as a commodity then a currency (and depending on ur buyin point its risky).

Bitcoin doesn' allow micro-transactions?  How so?
69  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin has not changed fundamentally, so why sell? on: April 23, 2014, 12:14:55 AM
Why sell?  For the old guys, it's probably some profit taking.  For the newbies, well they just haven't experienced the volatility of Bitcoin.
70  Economy / Economics / Re: Does anyone else feel like Bitcoin is a safe investment? on: April 19, 2014, 09:48:59 PM
People, please stop the fuddery. US$ is NOT going to collapse, not tomorrow, not the day after. Sure, CNY will most likely replace it. SOMEDAY. We will all be licking Chinaman's balls for money. But, it won't be for a while longer.

If US$ were to collapse, do you know the consequences? Bitcoin will be the least of your worries, then.

It will collapse, why else is the USA fighting for oil? Oil and military are the only two things that are backing the value of the US dollar. The USA is losing their military supremacy and their 'monopoly' on oil.

The question is not if fiat will collapse, the question is when.

And what exactly is supporting the Euro?  A bunch of countries that can't come to an agreement on most monetary policies and several countries that have a HISTORY of defaulting (the US has never defaulted).  What exactly is supporting the yen?  An aging demographic and over a decade of stagnation?  I could go through the whole list of fiat and countries and poke holes in what is "supporting" them.  If you honestly think the USD will be the first to collapse, you need a few more economic classes.  If you honestly think ALL fiat will collapse and the world goes on like normal, you need your head checked.
71  Economy / Invites & Accounts / Re: accounts for sale on: April 12, 2014, 09:56:20 PM
crazy prices for account, not sure how hero can be worth 3btc, you would need to post 1000 posts a month on some sig program to get you money back who knows when...

makes no sense at all

Someone paying that amount probably isn't doing it for the sig payments, it's for a larger scam.
72  Economy / Economics / Re: Would World War instantly destroy Bitcoin? on: April 10, 2014, 05:41:08 PM
Another World War would destroy everything. Well, maybe not roaches, I heard they might be able to survive a nuclear winter.
73  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Coinbase Stealing You're Bitcoin on: April 10, 2014, 05:39:06 PM
Your not you're Bitcoin! I came just to correct the title, it hurts my eyes!

And it's "stealing" not "steeling."  Hard to take someone seriously when they can't even spell properly.
74  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are Americans Really So Ignorant and Repressive? (Want to Ban Bitcoin) on: April 08, 2014, 08:43:54 PM
From: http://www.coindesk.com/survey-people-know-least-bitcoin-want-ban/

After being told that bitcoin is “a new online digital currency that is not connected to any particular country’s currency system and is not controlled by any government”, 54% of Americans who had previously known nothing at all about bitcoin said that their government shouldn’t allow it to be used to purchase goods and services.

Living in America all my life, I've been aware of the pro-enslavement mentality of modern Americans (who will choose comfort and security over responsibility and freedom every time). But this sort of thing really drives it home. No one is forcing these people to use bitcoin, but they reflexively react to it by declaring that you and anyone else should not be allowed to use bitcoin either.  They are wanting to ban voluntary transactions between two other parties because they, in their ignorance, dislike it.

And people wonder why I won't say the Pledge of Allegiance. For a man living in America in 2014 who wants to be neither a slave nor a slave-owner, I can't help but feel like an outsider.

Vs what percentage from other countries?  Until you have that data, this is mostly meaningless.  Also, these people know nothing about Bitcoin by their own admission, the fact that 46% are even willing to consider it for purchases is promising to me.  100% adoption/acceptance doesn't happen overnight.
75  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple vs Bitcoin on: April 08, 2014, 12:17:40 AM
I see Ripple also tried their own quasi-mining attempt with the Computing for Good project.  But like everything else they do, it fails before it even gets off the ground.

What are you talking about? It has been off the ground for months, it only got temporarily halted because a) the distribution was not fair b) IBM revamped the website which messed with RippleLab's code

We've got ourselves another Bitcoin retard!

Team,

We’re writing to you with the sad news that we have decided to phase out the Computing for Good giveaway--in its current form--over the next month. This decision was not easy.

Quote
We’re winding down the giveaway during April 2014, and will first shut off new user registration, and then slowly decrease the amount of daily distributed XRP.

https://ripple.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=6343

I see nothing temporary about this.  Show me where the project is going to continue.
76  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: America's First Bitcoin Gun Store on: April 07, 2014, 04:05:04 AM
Switch off your irony detectors for a few seconds, it might break otherwise.

My first thought was: Wow, that's something the world has been waiting for!

You can safely turn back on your various detectors. Smiley
I am an European citizen and live in a country where I'm glad that access to guns is far more restricted and regulated than in America. It's my personal opinion and I don't agree with American culture to allow relatively easy access to guns for virtually everyone. I don't blame you for this. It just feels scary for me.

Sure, we have crime and people get shot here, too. I don't know exactly if more or less, it surely depends where you live, both in Europe or America.

But here in my capital town I feel more safe to know that if someone's freaking out, he doesn't need to just open the drawer an pull out some guns and automatic stuff. Some people and criminals have weapons, fortunately they are scarce here and I'm happy with that.

Tons of Americans agree with you, they just aren't as Loud as the gun people.

Or willing to listen to facts, like increased gun control does not equate to lower crime rates.  See Chicago as an example where murder rates have declined since citizens have been allowed to conceal carry.

Call it "escrowed funds" then?

"Bank note" or "balance" might also be correct terms, in the end it is not strictly defined by the network though what your RippleState entries (the internal name for trust lines) reflect - they can be debt, money, time, goods...

All Bitcoin exchanges (even localbitcoins with their escrow system) use strictly IOUs, not "real" Bitcoins by the way.

It's been a long time since I've even looked at Ripple so forgive me if things have changed but one of the big issues to me is that all of the IOUs are treated similarly.  TradeFortress proved this a while back, has this been addressed?  Essentially people lost their Bitstamp IOUs for the bogus TF IOUs.  So long as you trust both parties, the IOUs are interchangeable.  It just seems like another way for people to get scammed.

If a completely anonymous stranger wanted to borrow 1 BTC from you, would you trust him?

Nope.  But if a completely anonymous stranger wanted to give me 1 BTC, I'd gladly let him.  That's the problem to me, TF was giving away IOUs, which shouldn't be able to come back and hurt the holder of said IOU.  But they were hurt due to the interchangeability between IOUs.

If someone gives you an IOU and fails to pay, that's the counterparty risk.  But to intermingle IOUs between multiple issuers makes everything opaque and near impossible to assess risk.

I just came back from San Francisco, I think its time I take ripple seriously...

What exactly did you see that made you come to this conclusion?
