61  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Incoming Avalon News 8/9/2013 on: August 12, 2013, 03:16:17 AM
Yifu's words, from his reddit AMA, 10 months ago. Perhaps some of this is relevant?

What do you think of your competitor, Butterfly Labs?
I view them as a major competitor, all FUD and other uncertainties aside here's what I think

  • It is completely possible for them to produce the specs they are advertising from a technical standpoint.
  • I view their shipping delay as a major underestimation as they simply took too many orders and is currently overwhelmed. This hurt their PR very much as when it comes to ASICS, timing is everything.[Emphasis author's.]
  • Where we only release 300 with a very confident promise on delivery date.
  • They have responded to our 60gh/s by bumping their specs. I believe competition is good for the customers, but now let's see if they can keep up. Avalon have more things we've yet to release.

I believe in continuing the trust I've build up with my old customers....

Unanswered question from that thread:

What experience do you have in the past in developing ASICs from the technical side (e.g. design of the chip itself)? What experience do you have in the past in developing ASICs from the business side (e.g. knowing what manufacturer to use, etc)?

How are you now head of operations? I thought nzhang was in charge and he had some professor who was uber smart helping him along with a Chinese team.
What you said is correct.

he is in charge of all the technical development, I suppose I shouldn't have used such misleading title as we don't have really have a corporate structure in this project. but if you want to look at it, he is CTO and I'm more of a CFO/COO person.

Are there any accommodations for mounting and cooling K16 boards in a standard ATX case?

Forum member jdape has several designs for sale: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=246638.msg2615862#msg2615862

I would love to work with him on getting something setup to mount a Pi and my ATX-Pi alongside K16s but have not made any inquiries in that direction yet.

Stickyback velcro doesn't work?
For 7 of them?

That seems oversimplified to me. I haven't even taken measurements, let alone considered airflow.

Bah!  I can't read.  I thought the talk was of mounting *just* the Pi.  Sorry.
Heh, I see. Thanks for explaining.

Want to buy around 200 chips..Can anyone give any update of Batch 6? And why the hell avalon showing out of stack? Funniest way to down a site for maintenance from around 26th June. Does it take 1 week to maintain that wordpress site? Are they gonna close selling chips? What will happen to batch 6? People!! speak up.
I asked this in-thread, and also emailed steamboat about it. He replied to my email:

We have a ticket open with Avalon, and should have more information shortly. Thank you for your continued patience in this matter.

avalon chips are out of order...so does the order still apply?

They have always been "out of stock". The 10 week lead time means they are being manufactured before Avalon ships them out. The order still applies

True, they have always been "out of stock" since there IS a lead time. However, as far as I can recall, there used to be a "Buy" button on that page that allowed you to "pre-order". chips. That isn't there any longer.

If you would travel 1 page back in this thread, you will find this...

Sooo I guess this means those of us in Batch 6 won't be getting them?

Found an explanation:

Avalon shop has some maintenance or so.

"We do however need to bring the site down within the next few hours to upgrade for trade-in orders. So if you are running into problems ordering chips and/or viewing orders please do not panic, we expect this update to finish by later tonight ( EST time. )"

I've not seen specific confirmation from anyone that the "out of stock" / lack of buy button was caused by their website maintenance--which they expected to finish two nights ago, and but it still says out of stock.

Can anyone speak to whether it's a website maintenance issue, or our batch 6 is not going to happen? Steamboat?

How much is pledged so far?

Right now, I'm just receiving questions. That's why I'm asking for pledges, the more people interested the faster we can start to order.

So, zero?

You are accepting pledges, which are payments made to the escrow address, right?

i wouldnt fault them for mining with customers hardware for a couple days to a week to burn in properly and check for faults. last thing you want is to get your unit and it doesnt work. now if they kept them for weeks or months thats another story

Maybe.

Or maybe manufacturers doing such testing should be using the testnet, so as to not reduce revenue for their other paying customers.

Thanks for your reply, and your patience with the questions, steamboat.

Did you read the OP or the subject line or avalons site? Is your google broken?

There are quite a few details to keep track of. Sorry I didn't catch every one and remember it indefinitely.

Steamboat himself has admitted that the forum is a sub-optimal way to store this info, but...that's what we have for now.

Your post was informative, though a bit rude. I appreciate the information. I'll keep it in mind to review those items before posting questions.

(EDIT: rephrased, added last sentence.)

Steamboat, can you please answer the following questions?

In the event a batch stalls, refunds will be issued to the addresses used to fund the purchase.
How much of batch 6 has sold, how much remains, and what is the deadline for filling that batch?

Also, how large were the other batches?

Batches of 10,000 chips, IIRC.
Is Xian01 correct?

OT, but I will reply..

Why do people post "watching" rather than pressing the watch button and watching? Ah yes, to increase post count.

I haven't done this... but when you click watch, the thread goes on your "watchlist" right? Most people (myself include) probably check the "new replies to your posts" all the time, but not the watchlist.

Anywho... one post closer to 500.  Roll Eyes

I get emails about watched topics. I don't see an option to set it otherwise, though I didn't look very hard.

Posting "watching" is stupid (since the watch feature notifies) and selfish, as it just clutters the forum for the rest of us.

Can Klondike K16s and BFL units mine side-by-side, connected to the same host? Specifically, a Raspberry Pi?

Turns out Snowden has been holed up in Hong Kong, burning through all his credit cards to get this message to the world.

He's pretty much sacrificed everything for the good of us all.
(Emphasis mine.)

Citation needed.

Here is a source saying he does not want your money: Edward Snowden’s Hong Kong Interview: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know.

Quoting from the same:
Quote from: Paul Farrell
Snowden also commented on the petitions and funds that have been setup in support of the whistleblower:

"I’m very grateful for the support of the public, but I ask that they act in their interest – save their money for letters to the government that breaks the law and claims it noble."

Update: the heatsink design has been finalized and is currently being sourced. Solid numbers should be available this week.

The heatsink will be available for purchase as a unique part, and will include the necessary hardware to attach it to the K16.
Is the heatsink necessary, or optional? Will it be included with the fully assembled units, and included in that price?

Will the K16 boards be stackable?

Thanks.
78  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Ann] US based Avalon ASIC chips and assembly: 701 remaining on: June 10, 2013, 12:15:18 AM
I'm interested in purchasing one or more fully assembled units.

Questions:

1. Are there still chips available for order?
2. Batch 5, or 6?
3. What are people doing for enclosures for the boards?
4. What else do I need to provide myself, besides a power supply, mini USB cable, and host device (e.g. RPi)?

Am I correct in all of the following?

5. Each fully assembled unit can take up to 16 chips, at a cost of 16 * 0.086 = 1.376 BTC for said chips.
6. If I make a purchase, I'd pay for the chips now, and the board/unit later. (When?)
7. Purchasing a fully assembled unit with 16 chips means I'd receive the unit as a finished product, fully assembled, with chips soldered to the board, etc. (but without a power supply).
8. In total, to have a fully assembled unit shipped to me, I'd pay 1.376 BTC + $133.5 (in BTC) + shipping (+ customs?)...whatever that comes out to.

Sorry if this is a bit redundant for you...just want to ensure I'm understanding correctly.

Thanks.
