Update: Got the cable(6 pin to 8 pin adapter) and it's workin great.

|
Finally got up and running with my XFX DD 7970, turned out all I needed was the 6 pin to 8 pin PCIe adapter. Just wouldn't work with 2 6 pin PCIe. Now that I got that problem out of the way, I'm looking for some advice on CGMiner tweaks and other things I can do to maximize coin generation. Sys Info: Xbuntu 12.04 CGMiner 2.11.4 AMD-APP 2.7 Catalyst 13.1 GPUs 1 XFX DD 7970 --- Plan on getting another one soon, maybe not XFX tho 1 Diamond HD6450 As far as I know the XFX cards are locked so there are some things I can't change. The only thing I have done so far is change the Intensity. The XFX card runs about 72C all the time, doesn't matter if the intensity is 1 or 10, that seems kinda odd. Edit:(The temp does change when I change the intensity). After I post this I'm gonna shut down and turn my fans on 100% and see what that does for the temps. Running in closed case with 4 fans, I cut two holes in the side of case and have 2 fans blowing directly on the Graphics cards. Edit: Tried cranking up the 2 side fans to 100% and the XFX temp stabilized about 67C. Pretty small gain for a lot of extra noise. Currently I'm getting about 590-600 Mh/s using just the 7970. The sample output below is using both cards. Getting a little hotter now ... up to 76C and CPU temp goin up lol. cgminer version 2.11.4 - Started: [2013-04-17 18:18:34] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (5s):626.6M (avg):613.4Mh/s | A:33 R:0 HW:0 U:4.9/m WU:9.1/m ST: 2 SS: 0 NB: 2 LW: 140 GF: 0 RF: 0 Connected to stratum.btcguild.com diff 2 with stratum as user xxxxxxxx Block: 011361bf8bd18bd2... Which output are you using? On my card there are 2 DVI outputs and I have an old monitor so I need to user the DVI-VGA adapter. Only 1 of the 2 outputs will work with the VGA adapter.
Something to check if you're using an adapter.

Well, if the adapter cable doesn't fix the problem I have to send it back.
I'm not going to spend a couple hundred on a new power supply just to see if that's the problem, it says it should work with 2 6 pin pcie. The voltages on the power supply are the same with both cards installed or with either one individually.
I don't know about the return policy at TD, I've never had to return anything before.

Just wondering what a few of these sensors are if anyone knows. I've highlighted the ones in question. Is there a better way to monitor these temps besides the sensors output on Xubuntu 12.04? al@pccs1:~/mining/cgminer$ sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +40.0°C (crit = +75.0°C) ? Got it from TD, they might be getting a RMA request soon.
Can't find a 6 to 8 pin adapter to try locally lol, had to order one should be here Friday. ^&*&&**(
Cost over 400 for the card, you'd think they could throw in a dam cable or 2 with it. Didn't even get a HDMI - DVI adapter, had to use an old one.
Finally got cgminer runnin and now I'm stuck with my 6450 ..... (~30Mh/s)

Youre not running scrypt. Changed it and tried it with scrypt, got the same result. I'm on bitcoins now and it's workin fine. HD6450 ~ 30Mh/s at I=9

are they 2 different lines or is it like one line with one pcie and one coming off of it 2 different lines. PSU Model #:PS-W0117RU ... it is about 6 years old. Adapter: ACPI interface Vcore Voltage: +1.30 V (min = +0.85 V, max = +1.60 V) +3.3 Voltage: +3.28 V (min = +3.00 V, max = +3.60 V) +5.0 Voltage: +4.89 V (min = +4.50 V, max = +5.50 V) +12.0 Voltage: +11.97 V (min = +11.20 V, max = +13.20 V) 5v supply is a hair low. Maybe I have a bad card?

It says on the box that 2 6 pin should work, but all it does is make the fan spin. No signal to the monitor.

OK, gonna run and get one tomorrow.
If that doesn't work I'll have to buy a new PSU. If I get a new PSU then I might as well get one that will run 3 cards, so I will have to buy 2 more 7970s.....lol ... then a second rig ... and ........ I might be better off just buying the dam coins, but that wouldn't be as much fun.

Just plugged in my XFX 7970 using 2 6 pin pcie power cables and it won't work!
Has anyone tried using the 6-8 pin pcie adapter cable and had good results? My psu is a 750w Thermaltake with only 2 6 pin pcie connectors. The 7970 has one 6 pin connector and one 8 pin connector.

I just can't get Ubuntu 12.1 to work, not sure if it's my hardware or just me.
Not sure if I should try the 7950, and take out the 6450 or try Ubuntu 12.04.

The easiest way to install the ATI AMD SPP sdk on linux is to actually put it into a system location. Then building will be simpler. Download the correct version for either 32 bit or 64 bit from here: What is meant by a system location? Which directory?
|
|
|
Cool, Gimp installed, even opens up psd files:)
OK, back to CGMiner ..... hopefully by the end of the day I'll be posting the hash rates:)

Found a text version of it in the download ... readme file lol.
Plugged in my old sound card and it worked, was thinking I'd have to buy a new one, didn't have to do anything. I don't know if it is using the best drivers, but It sounds just fine.
I should have went to Linux 10 years ago! All it took was ~4 pots of coffee, ~4 packs cigs and a couple days of research before getting started. It feels like I just got out of Microsoft prison lol

Finally found the problem, my display cable didn't like Ubuntu for some reason but it worked fine with XP. Changed the cable and got rid of the problem. Just need to get CGMiner running now. I had a problem last night, I think I was trying to install the 64 bit and I should be using the 32 bit build. Gonna try that later today, had a funky error and made a post about it last night but no response yet. There was something in the CGMiner instructions about installing the ATI driver in a system directory. Maybe I installed it in the wrong place. I haven't even installed my 7970 yet, gonna try to get it working with my 6450 first. Hopefully I can just plug in the 7970 and it will work lol.
Congrats on your system set-up. Whats the hash rate?
I'm really starting to like Ubuntu, haven't used Linux since 1997! I got my music back(30G) on a drive that was courrupted under XP, my cpu temp is running about 12C cooler and my graphics card is running 15-20C cooler also! This is just tested watching a video on Youtube. I installed the sensors app, used to use Speccy on XP.
I need to find a replacement for Photoshop and I'll be all set, I think. Wish I could afford to just get a whole new box dedicated to mining. I think I might change the Ubuntu GUI(Desktop) also.

Still trying to get CGMiner installed on Ubuntu 12.1. Getting an error when using the autogen.sh ~/mining/ckolivas-cgminer-4c19604$ ./autogen.sh Running autoreconf -if... ./autogen.sh: 8: ./autogen.sh: autoreconf: not found
I tried inserting this line but it didn't work wither: dh_autoreconf autoreconf -- Any ideas on what to try?

To make a long boring story short, I managed to get Ubuntu 12.1(I think) stable. I think I installed the 64 bit, not sure. Received the 7970 but I'm not installing that until I get CGMiner or orther app working on the 6450. All but one of my boxes are on Xubuntu Linux, and I used this guide: Is there a way to copy the commands out of that file, when I open it up on google docs I cant copy and paste anything. That really looks like a pain in the ass, is there anything easier just to get runnin, then I can work on CGMiner and optimizing later. One good thing, my backup drive with 30G of music which was corrupted with WinXP is now working! Bad part is I still need to get my old sound card to work. Sound Blaster Audigy, it's probable 12 yrs old or so but still works.

I'm trying the same thing right now. Ubuntu 12.1. Trying to get away from XP 32bit.
I can't get the display drivers installed before the graphics card gets flaky. I have tried 3 different Linux versions.
