I read an interesting article about the US funding Al Qaeda recently. Just be wary of the sources and the accuracy of facts.

Quote
The US government trained, armed, funded and supported Osama bin Laden and his followers in Afghanistan during the cold war. With a huge investment of $3,000,000,000 (three billion US dollars), the CIA effectively created and nurtured bin Laden's al-Qaeda terrorist network using American tax-payers money. Afghanistan is one of the world's poorest countries, where such an enormous sum sum of money would have had extraordinary value.

http://www.theinsider.org/news/article.asp?id=0228

They did not fund the terrorist group Al Qaeda directly. Instead, they funded various Mujahidin and rebel groups, one of which a young Osama Bin Laden was a part of. In particular, rebels were given stingers and taught how to build IEDs in order to fight the Soviet Union. Keep in mind that Bin Laden didn't say he was going to kill thousands of civilians when they gave money to him... The rebel groups said (truthfully!) that they would fight the USSR. However, after the US refused to help rebuild Afghanistan, support dropped, and Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and other groups became hostile to the US.

I don't think it's really fair to say that they "nurtured" his organization, since he was not a main beneficiary. At least it's not fair to say that it was on purpose.

There was no "Al-Qaeda" at that time to fund. "Al Qaeda" simply means "the list" in Arabic, and it was a list of fighters that were fighting against the occupation in Afghanistan and eligible to receive training, funding, weapons, and supplies. If the term "Al Qaeda" was actually first used by CIA operatives providing resources to fighters or the fighters themselves is unknown.

It actually means "the base", and it was not a list of fighters eligible to receive funding. Al Qaeda received the least funding, as it was only active when the Soviet Union was already on the way out.

It's a group formed by Bin Laden as the Soviet-Afghan war was coming to close. The name comes from simply what Bin Laden would call his training camps- "base" or "Qaeda" (from an interview with Al Jazeera in 2001: http://archives.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/asiapcf/south/02/05/binladen.transcript/index.html). The origin is not unknown, the leader of the organization has already said where it came from.

Am I crazy or are Bitcoins not even close to $160? Mt Gox says that the last price was $89. Why would anyone pay through such a sketchy method and pay almost double the price? There's a good chance that you won't be able to make your money back at that price for months or even years. And that's supposing that you don't get scammed right off the bat.

I use VirWoX most of the time. You can use credit/debit and the transaction is instant. There is a transaction limit however, which means that for the first few weeks you won't be making any huge trades. Be wary though as my cc company (Citizen's) thought that the transactions were suspicious and they denied a few before I called them and told them what I was doing. Fee is .01 BTC to send and something like .5% commission. Not very high. Goes down the more transactions you make.

I haven't used Bitinstant since it hasn't been working for a while, but one of my friends did and he said it was a good, fast site. I don't know the fees but I think that they're low as well.

I also used Moneypaktrader... but that was a waste of time as the commission was ridiculous (20% minimum!), and from what I've seen on the forums the owner of the site isn't very courteous. I also didn't like how he chooses when to cash the moneypak for bitcoins. I placed the order when they were in the 70s, but he didn't process it until 3 days later when they were 100. This is scummy because the site says it should take 24-48 hours, and he clearly just waited until the exchange was most profitable. Won't be using that site and can't recommend it.

Edit: Added fees

It was in the 60's and 70's just recently... 90 is not cheap, and for the 10ish dollars of profit you'd make per coin it's not worth it.
610  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Bitcoin Town: Let's Make the Future Come to us on: July 17, 2013, 06:44:08 PM
I was wondering, if say even 1000 people live in this bitcoin town. And average bitcoins per person was just 1000 bitcoins.

How would these people get those 1000 bitcoins each. Because as far as I see, most major holders have to the tune of 50k to 150k bitcoins. And the ones that are mininig even with the BFL asics are only minting 20 or so a month.

I think the 21 million cap is gonna be a huge problem.

Maybe, bitcoin should be treated like a gold coin where each bitcoin is worth like 50 "towncoin" and the currency of trade would be the "towncoin" ( or litecoin maybe) but just backed by the bitcoins.

That is how the modern world works right? All our currency is backed by gold and since there is a very limited quantity of gold, we use dollars and euros instead.

sorry, that's barely coherent

It's actually very coherent as long as you haven't been smoking. And even then, it's still pretty coherent Wink

The only issue with this whole idea, is that what exactly are you changing? The whole point of bitcoins, if I'm not mistaken, is that there is no centralized organization controlling it, and that the bitcoin system is anonymous (or pseudonymous). However, with the creation of a Bitcoin town, the anonymity is obviously thrown out the window, and you would need some sort of governing body (even if it is just everyone voting in a direct democracy). Obviously, there aren't enough bitcoins to go around, like daserpent1 said, so you would have to have some other sort of currency backed up by bitcoins, which have value. This is basically the same system we have now, although obviously modern currencies are backed up by capital and investments rather than something physical like gold (which makes it even closer to bitcoins).

Because Israel is certainly one of the most peaceful, non-violent countries in the world! They've been at peace for a grand total of 1 day since they become an official state. It's a well known fact that no one is ever shot in Israel. Just kidding, the country is always at war, and always in the midst of violence.

I could bring up the exact opposite: Japan has one of the lowest guns per capita (.6) according to smallarmssurvey.org. Their highest school massacre had a victim count of 8.

Anyone who can afford the Internet (and thus bitcoins) does not need charity. Anyone who supports a bitcoin "charity" system clearly just wants some extra money for themselves. I wouldn't complain about a "welfare" system existing, but I won't pretend that I want one because of some noble purpose. Not to mention, who's to say that people who receive these donations aren't going to go straight to the Silk Road or somewhere similar? There aren't very many legitimate uses for bitcoins right now.

This is a no brainer to me, but would love to hear other people's input.

I don't think so... in idle conversation with the people who work at my bank I've mentioned bitcoins and they said that it was a good investment. Unless they want me to invest in it because they know it will fail... I really don't think that bitcoins are even that much of a threat to them.

618  Economy / Exchanges / Good site to buy Bitcoins with debit/credit card? on: July 15, 2013, 04:43:21 PM
Hi everyone.

I'm new to bitcoins (only have bought 2.2 so far) and I'm looking for the fastest, easiest way to get more. So far I've been using VirWoX and my debit card (through Moneybookers), but unfortunately there is a maximum limit per day/month that is much lower than what I would like to do. So I am wondering, are there are any secure sites that I can use my debit card on? Alternatively, are there any sites that accept cash deposits at CVS/Walgreens besides Bitinstant? I tried to confirm my account there but they ask me to fill out this questionnaire about myself/ my relatives (really weird) that does not have the correct options.

Good luck getting a few hundred dollars for free. If you don't want to spend money, you can go through faucet sites. Coin Reaper automatically cycles through a bunch. If you're really persistent, or have nothing better to do, you can get a tiny amount of bitcoins for free and minimal effort.
