Good luck.

I think people will need more than luck to get anything back.

I've ported my offline address generator to Aeon:
https://github.com/moneromooo-monero/monero-wallet-generator/tree/aeon

It's not yet on the master branch, because it's not well tested yet, so make sure you test you can recover the wallet with simplewallet before sending anything to it, just in case. Reports welcome, and I'll merge it to master if nobody reports problems Smiley

As usual, don't forget to verify the GPG signature, with my public key being in the Monero tree. See the second part of the wallet generator page for instructions.

I did not get any reports, so I assume either it all works fine, or nobody tried it Smiley

I've fixed a last problem with custom prefixes, which would refuse to accept an Aeon prefix, and I've pushed to master:

https://github.com/moneromooo-monero/monero-wallet-generator/tree/master

Don't forget to download the *raw* version of the page if you're going to check the GPG signature.

Enjoy.

What do you mean fungible? Why bitcoin ain't but monero is?

Fungibility is the property of items to be equivalent to one another.
Basically, if I want to pay you X monero, and I offer you a choice of two outputs of the X monero, you don't have a particular reason to prefer one or the other. They are interchangeable.

Bitcoin is not really fungible because outputs have a traceable history. Monero outputs do not have an unambiguous history. Now, it's not perfect fungibility, as you can still tell whether a particular output has zero chance of having another history, or a non zero chance, but you basically can't incontrovertibly say an output comes from a particular history.

This means a third party cannot censor particular outputs based on their history without collateral damage, as some other outputs will also appear to share that history based on blockchain inspection, but will not actually have that history.

Hi all

About creating and managing multiple wallets in GUI beta...

In Windows, the wallet files are in directory
C:\Users\Xyz\Documents\Monero\wallets\nameofwallet1

So, if I want to create an other new wallet, I only have to RAR the folder nameofwallet1 and delete this directory ?

You can backup the wallets, but deleting seems unnecessary.
You might have been caught by the "auto load last wallet" system, but you can click on settings, then there's a button to close current wallet and open a new one. Or, press cancel when asked for the password for the first wallet, that moves you to the main screen when you can select "load from file", and you select whichever wallet you want to use.

When I connected from the wallet and start mining - no problems.
But when I started mine directly inside daemon - it always use 1 thread regardless threads=8 parameter.

You are probably typing "threads=8". Replace with just "8", eg, in the wallet: start_mining 8, or in the daemon: start_mining ADDRESS 8
607  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: January 12, 2017, 10:09:10 AM
Does anyone know what the hash rate distribution looks like for Monero?

https://monerohash.com/#network

"Unknown" is either unknown pools, or solo miners. This is based on a total based on network difficulty, and the pools' reported hash rates though.
Dwarfpool reached 50% a week or two ago, apparently from some of their non-Monero miners switching to Monero.

Do any steps need to be taken for those of us using the GUI build from here: https://getmonero.org/2016/12/22/monero-core-gui-beta-released.html

No particular steps needed.

It's very nice that people want to sell stuff for Monero, but please open a separate thread, and link to it once from here, that'll save on what quickly becomes spam for people not interested in this or that item.

Thanks

For 3, well...

CK would seem the obvious one by a mile. The successor to both CKG and CON.

Though if I might be so bold as to nominate SFS...

Think of the awesome publicity if you could trade Siberian Flying Squirrel pelts on an actual exchange!

When I check the SHA256 hash of the releases I download from github, I'm worried that both the download link and the published hash could have been compromised and I'd never know... until my coins are gone that is!

Are/should the hashes be published in the Monero blockchain, since it's immutable? Maybe I'm being overly paranoid  Roll Eyes

Get the Monero tree. Import fluffypony's GPG public key from there (94B7 38DD 3501 32F5 ACBE  EA1D 5543 2DF3 1CCD 4FCD). Check the signature on the hashes file matches that public key. From then on, you don't need to redo the key import, unless fluffypony changes his key.

See https://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/315/how-can-someone-verify-that-the-source-downloaded-from-github-is-genuine/316#316 for a more thorough way of ensuring you always get a non MITM'd git tree too.

I see.  I was hoping someone with experience mining Monero could provide a simple answer to my question so I came to the Monero forum.   My question is specific to Monero and Monero mining pools.

I can't answer your question, but I can at least say that the 0.88 estimation you mentioned seemed correct, based your claimed hash rate and the network hash rate at the time. The network hash rate did fluctuate a lot (between 44 MH/s and 50MH/s) recently though, which may be a factor too.

Hmm this paste has been hidden Sad

Sorry, I appear to have miscopied it: https://paste.fedoraproject.org/506116/17116821/

Which irc BTW?

I've updated https://xmr.suprnova.cc to the latest version (0.10.1.0) and just wanted to point out that it's a very easy migration, no resync needed, no long rescanning or so.. Very pleasant upgrade.

I don't think you're on IRC, so you might have missed this:
https://paste.fedoraproject.org/506116/17116821/

This is a change needed to the pool software itself to support RingCT (from the 9th of january or so). You seem to be using a custom pool so it might be more complicated than just applying the patch though.

Edit: URL fixed

The potential for 51% attack on Monero was discussed a few years ago here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/26lqrp/what_about_51/

...that there can be no double spends. Has that changed?

But what of "breaking consensus?"

Nothing's changed. I think he meant that Monero is double spend proof in the absence of the ability to reorganize the chain (ie, key images ensure that an output can't be spent twice).
I've asked him if that's what he meant, but as far as I know, someone with enough hash to rewrite the chain is able to double spend, as in other coins.
616  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: December 28, 2016, 03:26:26 PM
Dwarfpool on the mission to destroy Monero?

I have no reason to believe this is the goal.
However, I see this the same way as you don't stand in the middle of traffic even if no car wants to hit you. Don't tempt fate.

And Monero is 51% attackable similarly to Bitcoin, yes. The damage you can do is a bit different (you can't censor old transactions as easily, since private (yay!)), but you can double spend, for example.

I'm adding a pool mining screen to the GUI right now, it'll be in the next release, and should make it easy for people to mine the right way. Go go go!
617  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero - A secure, private, untraceable cryptocurrency on: December 28, 2016, 02:29:52 PM
Unfortunately, Monero is now facing a new imminent danger. The strength of its network is now much less than it was just a few months ago. As shown by https://monerohash.com/#network, the network is on the verge of being trivially attackable by a single pool (and one whose admin has scammed the Monero community before, so don't think this would "never happen").

This shows that the glut of new miners is only good if decentralization isn't endangered by it. The network hash rate is now at or near the highest it's ever been, and yet the network is more fragile. It is only a small consolation that those who are undermining it are the ones who are trying for short term profit from it, and thus will be those who will lose from it.

It's not quite too late, though. For those of you who may be mining on dwarfpool and who don't intend to undermine the Monero network, choose among the smaller pools on that link, and help secure the network whose longevity is ultimately where your profit comes from.

Currently, monero-wallet-cli allows 2 in contrast with the GUI's minimum of 4 (the slider cannot go below 4 or "low"). If a minimum mixin of 4 is going to be enforced moving forward for obvious reasons and eventually do away with 2, then I can understand.

In the september fork, the minimum mixin will increase to 4.

To all pool operators:

If you haven't already, you will need to update the node-cryptonote-util software in order for your pool to cross the january fork. I think many of the pool ops have done so already, but for those who are not in #monero-pools, you will need this patch: https://paste.fedoraproject.org/506116/17116821/

This applies to zone117x's version of the pool. There is a version of this ported to clintar's fork, which I don't have handy right now, but I will post it when I do is here: https://github.com/M5M400/node-cryptonote-util/commit/37f50f9b535f0258c3a1c6f7247a891b4c211ff3.

If you're not running this when the fork happens, you will be forked off.

For pool miners, you may want to check with your pool op that they're running the patch a few days before the fork, and switch to a known good pool otherwise. Please prefer smaller pools when doing so.
620  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [Poll] Why are you in an altcoin involved ? on: December 24, 2016, 08:11:25 PM
Privacy (anonymity, in your list).

The current fashion is "smart" stuff, like Ethereum, or whatever. However, if such a thing is needed, it will be built, it's only a matter of time. Same for most other things you might think of. Scaling, non monetary features, whatever. This will get done.

However, privacy is the single most important thing you can get behind now, because it will not be done if we don't do it ourselves, now. The future features above will get built either on a private platform, or on a non private platform, and the path of least resistance is definitely in the direction of the non private one. See how "the internet got it wrong" with privacy, and we're left to pick up the pieces ? Privacy is the one thing we have to get in right at the beginning, before it's too late and we end up having the nice stuff that's sure to come on top of a panopticon blockchain.

The market will push for all the shiny features, they'll come, that's a given. What we need to push for now is the stuff that is vital for freedom, but will not be pushed by the market, before it's too late. Do it, an do it RIGHT. Now. So that when the time comes and mainstream acceptance happens, it's too late for governments and corporates to screw us *again*, and we'll start off a platform which will respect our privacy - unless we select otherwise on a case by case basis. Let us have the choice.
