Thank you for that clear and concise explanation. For a change, I believe I actually understood that. I take it that option 2 is the only current viable "light client" available and currently that only will run on Android or similar. So it looks like non Android users are back with the Full Node.

Under the new law, for example, a board meeting may be conducted “in person or through the use of [an] electronic or telecommunications medium.” A “‘virtual company’ will be, as a legal matter, a Vermont limited liability company,” said Johnson. And other states are required to recognize the corporation as a legitimate LLC.

A virtual limited liability company (VLCC) is a type of legal entity that does not require a physical presence or in-person board meetings. The company type was first legalised in Vermont, USA in 2008[1] and in 2010 the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative began drafting legislation based on the Vermont law which would allow virtual companies in Iceland. The project, which was started by MP Birgitta Jónsdóttir (chairman), information activist Smári McCarthy and others was later succeeded by the International Modern Media Institute and is currently ongoing.

6164  Other / Politics & Society / Re: U.S. CrowdFunding Bill Passes, CAPS Advisory Panel on: May 29, 2012, 09:05:06 AM
Interesting read.

Croudsourcing.org's Eric Blattberg interviews Jeffrey Rubin.  Rubin practices corporate securities law. In addition he is chair of the federal regulation of securities committee of the business law section of the American Bar Association.

Excerpts:

Quote
I think that, as a concept, crowdfunding is very compelling. Why shouldn’t a small entrepreneur be able to raise money without getting involved in a thicket of federal regulation? But on the other hand, if this becomes a playground for sponsors who will exploit the lack of regulation, then it becomes a very tainted marketplace. It’s going to remain to be seen — say, a year or two after [crowdfund investing] becomes a reality — whether the returns on crowdfunding will be compelling. It will be interesting to see what percentage of crowdfunded companies simply don’t thrive, and even those that do, to see how many of them actually justify the risk involved in the investment.

Quote
Many people have food to put on the table, kids to educate, mortgages to pay off, and I’m concerned that the prospect for these people losing everything in crowdfunding ventures is significant. You know, the whole reason the securities laws are in place is to offer investor protection. I’m concerned that we’re depriving folks of those investor protections.

Quote
The other side of the coin is you’ve got a company that’s not bankable, has no history, that’s got a good idea and the people are ethical, so what are they to do? Why embroil them in a ton of red tape in order for them to raise money? I’m sympathetic to that, too.

Quote
After a year or two, if 95 percent of the companies that raised money crowdfunding are either insolvent or otherwise not operating, then it will turn out to be a pretty significant scam. I know that, in that instance, people will turn to the SEC and say, “What were you doing?”

So you are selling counterfeits of Beats by dre Tours.

I bought these a few months back from a distributor in china and made a bit of cash selling to my friends from 45$-60$ USD.
If you want to buy them, they are 3 BTC each,

Hopefully they knew before the sale that you were selling counterfeits.

I am also selling Beats by Dre Pros. These are also fake[...[

If you want to buy them, they are 17 BTC each,

Had to look up what the (original, non-counterfeits) look like:

6166  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Blockchain Download Question on: May 28, 2012, 11:13:48 PM
Hi,

Just had a question about the Blockchain download speed. Now there is countless topics about this but I just wanted to better my understanding about this a little further.

So we all know bitcoin is P2P, like torrents are. So why is it that a download for a blockchain takes so long compared to a private tracker for a torrent?

What causes the blockchain to be so slow, is it due to the fact that the internet speeds of these nodes aren't ridiculously fast like private trackers are? Or is it a totally different ball game?

Thanks

The most recent version of the client performs much better than previous versions.

Much of the time spent waiting on the blockchain to download is actually spent by the client verifying each new block that it downloads and adding it to the blockchain database and index.  Faster networking doesn't make that step occur any faster.

Using slower hardware (e.g., laptop with an atom processor) exacerbates the perception that it takes forever.

If you do have problems with getting the client to update the blockchain it might be in that you don't have reliable connectivity (e.g., a flakey wi-fi signal?) or there are firewall issues?  But do realize, the amount of data is significant -- pulling 2+ GB is a lot of network transfer.
6167  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: So, what happend to mtgox > Dwolla? on: May 28, 2012, 10:58:39 PM
Yes, Mt. Gox has instituted requirements that you verify your identity with Mt. Gox before you can transfer Dwolla USDs to Mt. Gox for deposit into your account:

 - https://mtgox.com/press_release_20120518.html

Yes, Mt. Gox has been way behind on being able to handle all the Dwolla withdrawals (because, presumably, of restrictions where Mt. Gox can't accommodate demand due to restrictions by Dwolla). 6 day (business day) delays are what Mt. Gox is recently estimating.

Yes, Dwolla now added the requirement that you must verify your account with them, which means sending to them a photo ID.

And yes, previously Dwolla instituted the requirement that before you can send funds to a Bitcoin exchange, you must give to Dwolla your SSN and have a bank account linked to your Dwolla account (with at least 30 days passed since you first had Dwolla transfer funds from your bank.):

If your problem is with Mt. Gox, they do have a support ticket system:
If you are having trouble understanding the response from a ticket, perhaps you can paste the message here for further analysis.

6170  Economy / Securities / Re: GLBSE disaster planning on: May 28, 2012, 09:47:28 PM
That would be more of an annoyance than disaster.

And what is the continuity plan for that then?

There's probably an easy way to give to the issuer a dump daily, for instance, that gives an accounting of shares.  The issuer wouldn't know the investor but the account could have an "exit address" that would facilitate liquidation of all shares:

Or, using the Sign Message feature from the Bitcoin.org client the investor could sign a message as proof for claiming an account under a new exchange if that becomes the resolution.

Here's a site where you can purchase bitcoins using credit card:

MiniBits is back, if you want to nibble away at the balance:

This wouldn't be feasible for an $11 card, but for future reference Get-Bitcoin will accept your prepaid debit card as payment towards purchase of bitcoins:

6174  Economy / Trading Discussion / Dwolla email - "We need to verify your identity!" on: May 28, 2012, 06:52:57 PM
Just got this message, supposedly from Dwolla:

Quote
From: Dwolla <no-reply@dwolla.com>
To: [me <myemail@mydomain.com>]
Subject: We need to verify your identity!
Date: Mon, 28 May 2012 11:37:00 -0500 (CDT)

Please report any errors in this e-mail immediately.

To better protect you, we need to verify your identity!

Please log into your Dwolla account to complete any additional verification.

Dear [my name],

This e-mail is being generated for Dwolla account ID # [my 10-digit dwolla address].

Additional account verification is required for [my 10-digit dwolla address]. Please log into your Dwolla account to complete any additional verification. Please note any pending transactions may be delayed until your account is verified!

Report an error in this e- mail.

Contact Dwolla support with Questions.

At first I thought it was a phishing attempt as the links are not to Dwolla.com but to SendGrid.net.  But those redirect to Dwolla before prompting for username and password so it is probably legit.

Just to be careful, I then manually typed in the URL https://www.Dwolla.com and logged in but didn't see any alert on my account.  On the left hand side I did see the link "Verify account info" and clicked on it.

It shows:
Quote
To finish verification, we need to have a photo ID on file.
Please upload a valid photo ID, such as a U.S. driver's license or passport, to verify your identity.

My "Account settings" shows my account as a "commercial" account so I am curious if:
A.) Because of my transaction volume (or other reason, random selection even), I'm now being asked to verify my account?
or
B.) All commercial accounts are being asked to verify?
or
C.) All Dwolla customers are being asked to verify?

Would others mind confirming if they too have received this e-mail and/or are are now required to verify with photo ID? (and if so, is this for  personal accounts as well)

I generally carry a $0 balance and now I don't know if I will be sending in a photo id at this point.   With there being no fee to deposit cash (at Chase, into BitFloor account) and ACH withdrawals now possible (e.g., BitFloor) or coming soon (BitInstant - http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=82328.msg925722#msg925722 ), I see fewer and fewer reasons to use Dwolla.

Since the MoneyPak code is "like cash", I am hesitant to include it in an email.

The way BitInstant solved that is to give a PIN# on the purchase summary / receipt page.

Then in the e-mail is a URL to a page, but to gain access to the moneypak code, the PIN is needed.

but disregarding how long this would take to become a problem. Assume it is.

What I can't seem to get from anyone who expresses lost coins as being a problem is the reason as to why that is a problem?

Yes, there will some point that more coins will be destroyed than there are issued.  Yes, that will contribute to price deflation.

Is that the "problem" that comes as the result of lost coins?

Or am I missing something?
6180  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bets of Bitcoin - Bitcoin betting on real world events on: May 28, 2012, 01:20:36 AM
Heh.  Ok, I must have been thinking "more than 24 hours" and typed "never".  Either way, isn't that too loose?  This is a wallet where I have money, right?

I really like to be able to stay logged in at various sites, so I feel like that is a good default behaviour. Wallet operations (withdrawals and address changes) require your password anyway. If you are at an untrusted computer you can always logout manually. Also there can be extensions for your browser of your choice that manages site authentications according to your taste (For example HTTP Logout for Firefox).

Isn't my account easily vulnerable to a man-in-the-middle attack without SSL (HTTPS) being required?

I know that the withdrawal will require a password and that page is only SSL, but wouldn't an attacker that sniffs and sees my session id be able to then submit wagers using my balance?  That would seem to be an odd attack, but it could be used to juice up the payout for the attacker by getting a higher level of wagers on the losing side.
