how hard would this be for a noob to do who has basic html knowledge?  would i be able to do this myself with motivation through tutorials?
It would not be HTML only. You need also Server and Client scripting. For example PHP or ASP for Server and Flash or Javascript for Client. You need communication in both directions.

well i would hope i would easily be able to figure out the basics through google.  i would need to find a tutorial that shows how something similar is done.  i do understand basic programming logic as i have taken 2 years of intermediate C++ but totally slacked off in it.  if it is as simple as figuring out how to set it up so that information is accessed through the API and then writing simple if/then statements then i think its something i could definitely do with a bunch of coffee cigs n bud.

maybe if you do decide to do this, or anything at all in the future you could setup a screen rec of your work?    Grin

just wanted to thank the OP for making this.  it saved my ass this morning.  instead of being -$150 im only -$20 Cheesy

on another note, i was wondering if it would be possible to make something similar to this that would let you submit orders on mtgox.  if there was a way to set it up so only sertain orders get placed when a certain price is reached that would be excellent!  would this be possible?
Wow! Smiley Sometimes I am happy that I made the work and did share it with you all because I know exactly how bad it is to loose much... ;-)

Looks like a testimonial from another satisfied user of the Alert/Calc tool.

You should post these on your web site Jessi, with users' permissions of course.  Smiley

yes! i will certainly be donating some BTC once i regain a few bucks.  in any case much kharma coming your way  Grin

I rather suspect this is what the operators around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century felt like waiting for the telegraph

dont you remember 56k on AOL?   Cheesy

The Stickies have API capabilities for integrating stuff, I should learn to do something with that.

it would be really nifty to make a sticky displaying the buying and selling data similar to clark moodys.

this makes me wish i payed more attention to programming in school.

You mean like a Stop Loss Order?
that would be most excellent and im sure you would receive plenty donations if you did it so there is some incentive even if you do decide to halt trading.

I'm still trying to figure out why he posted screenshots of his position without understanding the fallout that could result for him in such a thin market.

If people are made aware that you're 10:1 in any direction, and they know your base price and level of exposure, it's simple maths to take advantage given that they have the resources to go against your position enough to liquidate you. In this case that appears to be what happened.

629  Economy / Speculation / Re: How does bitcoin price compare to one year ago? on: January 18, 2012, 03:03:39 AM
A better comparison would be to look at a stock that went from a penny stock at IPO to a blue chip.

that would be some interesting graphs to look at.  what are some historical penny stocks that did this, any during the .com bubble?

I mean, you don't even have any real volume on the main USD market, and you are going to split that volume into 10 different markets. Smart move, I have to say...

good point.
633  Economy / Speculation / Re: Mt Gox must die on: January 18, 2012, 02:08:04 AM
does the exchange have to fill the role of the moneychanger

we need to away the profit/hassle/legality issues away from the exchange service and transferring it over to any "big player" who wants to make a few % selling special coupons.  there could either be an agreed upon flat rate or it could be a "free market" where people competitively price their transaction fees.

basically we are moving #bitcoin-otc from IRC -> the web browser, giving non technical people easier access to exchanges.
634  Economy / Speculation / Re: wtf is going on? on: January 18, 2012, 01:10:25 AM
i so confoosed
635  Economy / Speculation / Re: Mt Gox must die on: January 18, 2012, 12:33:41 AM
i wonder what kind of funds it would take to make a clone of sorts?

development is a least of a problem, getting fiat funds in an out - you will have to deal with some regulations and acquire some money transmitting business license

true but i would consider whatever it takes to get those proper licenses in order part of the "funds."  or maybe something could be negotiated with bitinstant.  even if it was only able to handle dwolla transactions id say its a project worth doing.
636  Economy / Speculation / Re: Mt Gox must die on: January 18, 2012, 12:25:48 AM
i wonder what kind of funds it would take to make a clone of sorts?  perhaps it is feasible to start a donation fund and get one started within this community with all fees from transactions not going towards an owners profit but to be reinvested into hardware.

638  Economy / Speculation / Re: FUCK THIS on: January 18, 2012, 12:14:27 AM
Well, you can bet on me having some bids a dollar or two below the "averaging" price from here on out, solely due to this action we just saw!  I don't want to miss out on those kind of market movements again!

And if more people join in the same line of thinking as me, then we'll self-stabilize against these sorts of price swings in the future.

yea this is exactly what i did and screwed me!  but a low order at 6.1 when it was at 6.45ish thinking id be "lucky" to catch at that price... Sad
639  Economy / Speculation / Re: How long this correction will take? on: January 17, 2012, 04:27:33 PM
I've been catching spikes in small batches, but I agree... the market is acting funny today and that asterisk is still semi-constant. Stay out!

What? Are you kidding me? Bitcoinica is on maximum leveraged long positions now, with bids for only roughly 50k BTC in the vicinity?

I take that as an attempt to make me hit the "sell all remaining" button. This can't be right, or they somehow adjust maximum leverage to the order book -- which is a wild wager in itself due to manipulation possibilities.

so what are you implying?
640  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: BTCinch shutting down on: January 17, 2012, 02:00:31 PM
this sucks!  i was planning on using you guys in the coming months.  may i ask what specific hurdles you ran into in regards to legal issues?
