The controversy is in whether or not the listed asset names should be unique to one issuer, or if whoever issued an asset could call it what ever they want.

And the controversy has been answered in that it is no different to a Bitcoin address.

Do you just send money to 1MSFT first bits?

Of course not - you'd do your "due diligence" by going to a company's "official website" (in HTTPS) and find where they have the Bitcoin address for you to "copy and paste".

If you guys think it is a good idea that we should spend days and days discussing everything like this in circles then fine - but please understand that the "real work" that needs to be done (which depends upon things like this) just gets *delayed* and *delayed*.

I agree. Using the Alias in front of the asset name seems like a good solution for branding and preventing squatting. If the names were unique, some jackass would squat Bitcoin and we'd end up with assets named B1tc01n and look like a bunch of baboons.

Stupid people are going to get scammed no matter what you do. Remember,  people will actually give their bank account to people in Nigeria on receipt of an email saying that the royal prince needs their help to save his millions.

Now, this is normally the time of the day when I produce a sensible, reasoned summary of the main topics from the last 20 pages or so, with my well-balanced thoughts and comments about the current developments in NXTworld.........but, fuck it:

NXT 2 DA MOOOOONNNN!!!!!!

Nice work, everyone.

Best summary yet. A+++++++ would read again!!!

Anyone had issues "mining" Nxt? I have been mining at http://www.p00l.org/ for about 2 days now. My account shows up under the Online Users tab, but it's never shown up under payouts. Have I not given it enough time?

I also tried another miner at http://hashrate.org a couple hours ago and nothing under the hashrates 10 min avg...which says give it 10 minutes.

Am I doing something wrong?

Same here on both accounts.
644  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 20, 2014, 01:32:01 PM
Could be a deadcat bounce. Still a lot of selling power.

Once the exchange goes live a lot of new people will show interest in NXT. There are some people worried about paper losses too much IMO. It's only a loss if you sell for less than you bought. I'm sitting on paper losses too, but I'm not going to sell until at least 1 NXT=1USD. The deadcat bounce is Auroacoin IMO

I agree. It's amazing how jittery many in this young community seem to be about price. The alt coin world is so spoiled with the idea of instantaneous profits. Not many think long term and amazingly even long term is defined most of the time as <12 months.
Thats because of all the "every type of altcoin going" pump and dump mentality. People are starting to realise nxt has never been a pump and dump coin. Now all you see is pumping and dumping of the alt clones to transfer to nxt. If anything Nxt has given a purpose for the alt clones and thats is pumping them to dump for nxt. alts are a way for people to obtain nxt without putting up fiat. imo any ways. i personally mine alts to swap for ghs at cex or buy nxt with em and thats it. nxt is my gold stash lol

And now we have 2 pools www.hashrate.org and www.nxtp00l.org i dont even have to handle to alts lol

who runs the p00l site? why do most addresses end with 3 zeros? might this be a bug and he pays out to invalid addresses?

I'm not sure, but I noticed it too.

This is my address under 'Online Users':7606968008269260975. This is correct.
Under 'Payouts' it looks like this:         7606968008269261000.

The last 4 digits are wrong. Not sure why this would be intentional, but maybe I'm an idiot.

Hi,

I have a few questions: Smiley

1. Issue asset

from: http://wiki.nxtcrypto.org/wiki/Nxt_API

http://localhost:7876/nxt?
     requestType=issueAsset&
     secretPhrase=SECRET&
     name=ASSETNAME&
     description=DESCRIPTION&
     quantity=QTY&
     fee=FEE&
     referencedTransaction=REFTX

Does one sends his own private key in the open??
(attacker might just need to activate WireShark on the attacked remote computer to sniff it...)

2. I read somewhere that BCNext had made a few tweaks to a well known elliptic curve algorithm.

    Why did he do it? (one minus that I see is that It is not "proven" and we needed auditing).

3. Can someone send assets from one account to the other without going through the asset exchange? (for example from one account that I have to the other)

http://localhost:7876 localhost is your own computer using loopback. I dont think it even goes out on your LAN cable, just processed internally. So, unless your PC is compromised, no problems. However, if your PC is compromised to the point where the attacker has access to the loopback data, then you are already screwed

The "tweaks" were porting to Java, including an implementation bug. This bug has been identified and fixed and the code has been reviewed by Dr. Evil himself, aka Jesse James. Also, the encryption choices BCNext made were a bit ahead of time, now openssl is making the same type of choice.

There is the transferAsset API call that lets you send assets to any account

Thanks for the well written answers!

Yes, if my PC is compromised, attacker could simply activate sniffing soft on it and just wait for me to issue an asset... couldn't it be done via https?

If your PC is compromissed, Https wont help at all.

[Solution for Asset Naming Issue]

First off, any changes in how Asset Names are handled in the core will delay release of AE. It also impacts all the code written against the current spec. So, any solution that doesnt require NXT core changes wins any ties.

...

James

Good post, I think we need something like "verified accounts" in Twitter. The asset issuer would need to give up his anonimity. This way we know who he is and he is less likely to scam. Verified account status can be taken away too.
I am glad you like it!

Please say you will just implement this Preferred Issuer filter checkbox and display of +/- voting and we can save thirty pages of debating it in a circle.

You have the power to let me code today instead of getting sucked into forum debating

James

Quick and easy solution. I like it Smiley

1) the front page doesn't count coz it disappears

2) I still don't know if it makes real accounts or not. I just got this number there: 6365394688875287683 - what happens if I send there my Nxt from Cryptsy?

It'll end up in an account on Mainnet with the same account number.

@Wesleyh

Where can I see how much there is left to forge a block?

Time? I don't think there is such an API. And I think it's better to hide it anyway, since most of the times it's depressing to see how long it would take Wink

Thoughts?

I agree, it provides more confusion than value.

Personally...  I do view Nodecoin as just a project/asset/coin...  but let me make one thing clear...  IF the intention of "Nodecoin should be redeemable for accessing services (DAC, NxtCash, whatever)" was to exclude NXT from being used as well...  then it is definitely a NO GO.

You are 100% right. I agree also with this one.

+1

However,

If nodecoin must be use for certain services, then, these services must be private services built on top of Nxt. Not implemented into the Nxt core. Only Nxt should be used in the Nxt core. Nxt must conserve it independence against it service on top of it! In this way, if one service on top of Nxt fail, then Nxt do not fail. I think it is a reasonable security measure for Nxt.

Is that make sense? share your opinion please?

I agree 100%. Anything that uses Nodecoin should not be a core feature.

If you run a NXT node, you are supposed to receive NXTcoins and it is called forging.
You don't understand it. Running a node is not the same as forging. This mistake is maybe the cause of all the miscommunication here?

Forging:
People unlock their account on a simple computer and are chosen to generate a block. You will receive the fees of that block in your account.
Forging is free, just turn your computer on.

Running node:
Nodes are servers which will help stabilize and secure the network. You don't earn fees of blocks.
Running a node is running a dedicated server and can cost money.

Is this really true?  If you are running NRS 0.8.9 on a node, you are ineligible to be selected to forge a block and receive the standard NXT fee award for forging that block?  If so, this is news to me.  How does NRS 0.8.9 know you are running a node and not an open client and so exclude you from generating a block?  How is DGex managing to forge so many NXT with all the NXT they are holding from clients?  You're telling me Graviton has 50 million of other people's NXT running on his laptop computer with an open client and not a rackmount server node?

Somebody tell me one more time what the difference is between an open client and a node, and what hallmarking is and what good it does.  I thought a node was the same as an open client on a laptop, it could just handle more bandwidth.

Simply because most of us don't unlock accounts on our nodes to forge because it's not secure(VPS)...I COULD forge on my node, I simply don't.

I think you might need to step back and take a breath...nodecoin is nothing more than an asset, it isn't going to take over.

Can we please stop with the "The sky is falling!!!!1!!1one!!1" posts?

There are issues, yes....but there are a whole hell of a lot of shades of grey between black and white. We're still young.

Ya, what do you suggest I change the text to? I don't know at the point of the message whether it's an asset transfer or something you bought.

Not sure if there is anything that can even be done about this, but when I receive my Nodecoins("Mined"), I get a notification in Wesley's client "You have bought 50 Nodecoins"...except that I didn't    Wink

I can only assume the same notice would appear when any asset it transferred to me?

Now that could confuse the shit out of people.

Maybe just "You received 50 ... "? Then it doesn't matter if you paid for them or not.

That's so simple, it's brilliant Smiley

Exactly why I said I'm not sure there is anything that can be done about it. I don't have an answer for this.

Is there a way to check if there was a bid placed for the asset and if not, display that the asset was transferred? I haven't delved into the API too deep so I honestly don't know.

Guys, all this nodecoin talk makes me (and newcomers) bored. Please talk more about NXT as a currency again.

Even if nothing else comes from Nodecoin, it has helped a lot in the AE testing. It has a good trade history, tests out asset transfers, and allows a market to develop around an asset. Just my opinion, of course.
