How do you guys feel about selling BTC for fiat gains (or even at a loss [maybe for tax reasons or because your insane  Grin ]?

Do you guys life by the "No Neo, I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready... you won't have to (sell your btc)"-Meme or
are you mere mortals that sell before they lose their fiat profits?

There's nothing wrong with getting some gains.  I try not to sell, but as a longtime holder there have been times when Bitcoin makes up an uncomfortable amount of my net worth.  There's no point in losing sleep over volatility, so I think it is always good advice to have only what you can afford to lose in crypto.  If you're losing sleep over the volatility, you own too much.  I also think it's always best to pay off debt before speculating too much with investments, so that should always be your first priority.  There's nothing wrong with selling your BTC to pay off all your debts, and then beginning the stack again.  Life gets a lot easier and less stressful when you're debt free and diversified.

If I had a dollar for every time someone said xxx amount of Bitcoin is not worth my time over the history of Bitcoin I would be a billionaire by now.

FYI you should be mining 1500-2k satoshis a day per unit. Keep in mind it takes at least 24 hours for your pool hashrate to stabilize and be able to show you how much BTC your earning accurately. And yes those 1-2k satoshis will have been more than worth your time in hindsight.

Stack those sats.

If they were mining as expected then I would have no reason to be disappointed.  They just aren't.  I can accept that maybe the issue is that these don't play well with Nicehash, although someone stated they did.  I am not having that experience.  Until I take the time to set them up on a different pool I guess I really shouldn't comment any further.  I will say that I've been in the community for several years longer than you, and have mined with just about every miner that has existed since the FPGA days (I was one of the first customers to ever mine with an ASIC), but I do appreciate your urge that I stack sats...  I also do respect what you've built.  I couldn't have done it.  I just wish I was getting more than 50% of the expected hashrate.
6543  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Man lost everything to Crypto on: January 23, 2022, 10:23:49 PM
A story as old as time.  I don't understand why people try to trade like it's a job.  Sure, sometimes opportunities present themselves and you can take advantage.  In order to do so though, you can't be 100% invested all the time.  Most traders think they're going to jump from coin to coin and ride some invisible wave to millions.  It just doesn't work like that.  That's why CZ is the richest person in crypto and the leveraged traders are liquidated by the billions.

There's a reason why we're all taught the story of the tortoise and the hair as children.  It applies to a great many things in life.  Most of all trading.  They say markets are a way for impatient people's money to flow to the patient, and I wholeheartedly believe that.

I think probably everyone reading this would have been better off grabbing their bags and setting up some sort of interest or liquidity pair with them and leaving them alone, yet I know that a good % of people reading this will go out and trade on leverage again, thinking they know better.  All I can say is, RIP to your savings.
6544  Economy / Speculation / Re: Who saw the Bear market coming? on: January 23, 2022, 10:19:50 PM
I've been saying for nearly 4 years the time to sell would be December of 2021.  I missed it by about a month, but not bad.  Bitcoin is very much cyclical, and it's based on math and not market conditions.  I'm very curious if the market makers are going to be able to manipulate the market into being different this time, but I'd have to be burying my head in the sand not to expect us to hit $10K sometime over the next 2 years.  I think people are wrong about us entering a bear market.  I think we're just reverting to the mean, which I see around $10K.  The Bitcoin market bubbles up and then returns to value, it doesn't enter bear markets.  At least that's my opinion.  If it broke below the last cycle's low around $3K, then I'd have a change of opinion.
6545  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2022 NBA Season on: January 23, 2022, 10:14:49 PM
There is a great game tonight between Miami Heat and Los Angeles Lakers. Heat are the favourite team here but they have a similar form to Lakers these days. But they still have six more wins than Lakers at the same time. Heat are doing wonderful and Lakers are just trying to win their games thanks to Lebron. Because if he doesn't carry the team, they won't have a big chance for even the playoffs. They are struggling even now and this is alarming. I think that Heat can beat them in this game.
No doubt on that as the Lakers struggle is not been solved yet. If they lose on a weaker team, how much more on the stronger team like the Heat. I'm also leaning on the heat to win as they work as a team, unlike the Lakers where they are heavily relying on the old Lebron.

The biggest news about this game is that Anthony Davis is being listed as a gametime decision whether he will play or not.  I think they'd be better off being a little cautious considering how injury prone he is, but with the Lakers you never know what sort of craziness they've got up their sleeve.

I'm a little disappointed that I won't be able to watch the game today, but I've found that YouTube does a great job at showing the entire game, but only the stuff worth watching.  It usually cuts an entire game down to about 12 minutes.  I think that's actually a better way to enjoy games you missed then watching the Sportscenter highlights, because they only show the best plays and you don't really get an idea how the game went.

I got my notification and can't wait to try out one of these bad boys.  Great to know they're getting out the door.

Received my miners today and they're now up and running without too much difficulty in their setup.  Pool is showing them bouncing around between 2.5th/s and 3.5th/s which I believe is probably normal.  Sound levels are nonexistent in the room with my GPUs.  They are pretty much exactly what I expected (having to run multiple instances of the mining software was the only real surprise).  Granted I wish mining profitability was a little better currently, but you can't have it all.

Can you elaborate on the multiple instances piece? What do you mean exactly? Is this for each standard unit connected to the main one?

I'm not running them off a main unit.  I am running them individually connected to a PC.  Right now they're making about 800 satoshis a day each, which I can't imagine is worth the time I'm taking to post this this.  So I'm obviously a bit disappointed.  Maybe when I switch to another pool they will be able to mine a little better, of course by separating them from the rest of my miners there will be increased fees for withdrawals and a slower time to reach a payout amount worth an additional input when it's eventually spent.  Maybe I'm doing something wrong or just plain dumb, but I don't think these miners would be profitable for most, if any of the users buying them when you consider residential electricity costs and the idea of cooling in the summer.  It was close with the given specs.  Real life usage, not so much.  As a space heater they're ok.
6547  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 2022 NBA Season on: January 23, 2022, 09:31:49 PM
Scottie Pippen is back at it promoting his book.  This time instead of talking about how he was better than Michael Jordan or how his coach Phil Jackson was a racist for letting Toni Kukoc take the last shot of a basketball game, he's talking about how he wanted to be closer with Michael Jordan but he was never able to.  Sure, Jordan was probably a dick, but looking back I'm sure he's glad he was now that Pippen has come out as some sort of jealous saboteur of his legacy.  Given Pippen's attitude back in the day regarding surgeries to sit out during the season and not wanting to live up to his contract (one of the worst player contracts ever, that would never happen today), it's really amazing they won 6 titles.  You could blame it on a horrible general manager for not paying the players what they deserved and seeding distrust amongst Pippen/Jordan, but maybe it was not caring about the players and paying them less than they deserved that helped him assemble a good enough team to win it all.  There's also the possibility that the Bulls front office was the worst ever and Michael Jordan really did carry that team on his back...

OG just picked up a seat! transaction in mempool now. Cheers! -dirtbike

Awesome!  Thanks!  I hope you enjoy it.  I'll be sitting down tomorrow to engrave all this weeks orders and get them out the door.  You should have it in a few days.

I will point out that you bought a minted seat though, not one of these Silver NastyMining Wallet sets.  Smiley  Still an amazing purchase, just the wrong thread.  Smiley

Here's the Minted Seats thread for the coin you bought, in case you weren't aware of it or wanted to read more about them.  Thanks again!

6549  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 5700 XT giving me trouble with temps on: January 22, 2022, 09:11:41 PM
If I'm not mistaken, anything under 95 degrees for your memory is considered "safe" from damage.  Anything under 106 degrees isn't supposed to cause damage.  So I wouldn't be too worried about it.  As others have stated, you should be able to lower settings (I'd try a different software program, maybe afterburner) if you want to figure that out.

Personally, I would just up the fan from 65% to 90% and see what happens.  Is there something keeping you from increasing the fan speed?  That seems the obvious solution unless you are trying to keep the noise down.

A quick google search indicates that your temps are quite good, so honestly I wouldn't worry too much about it.  If you are worried, increase that fan or setup another fan pointing at the back side of the card.
6550  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [BOXING] Logan Paul vs Mike Tyson on: January 22, 2022, 08:48:40 PM
According to Mike Tyson, this fight is not happening.  He said there wasn't even serious talks with his camp about this fight happening.  This from the latest Nelk podcast where he stopped by with Dana White.

Mike did say that Jake Paul's camp reached out to him about a possible fight, but that there was so many people involved and it was clearly all about the money for everyone.  Mike said he wasn't feeling it.  He stated that he wanted to fight because he loved the sport, not to make a bunch of kids a ton of money off his legacy.  Dana even said that Mike Tyson is the draw, not Jake Paul, so there's no reason why Mike needs Jake.  I'm not sure that's 100% true if Mike wants millions of dollars, but as he becomes more and more successful in the marijuana and social media spaces, there's less and less of a reason for him to get into the ring...  He's old, it's not worth it.  I think he could still kick Jake and Logan's asses, but at what cost?

I just wanted to reiterate this as people are still talking like this fight could possibly happen.  It won't.  If you want to hear it straight from Mike's mouth, you can do so by watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRYF8t2swqs

It seems that fighting Logan was never even on the table.  Jake was willing to fight Tyson if it was a money grab, but Tyson was not interested.  He went on to say he fights for fun and for the love of the sport and has no interest in fighting for money or to help someone else's cause.  Dana also said he doesn't want to see Mike fight again, and it sounds like with the success of Tyson 2.0, he doesn't need the money anyway.

I received a couple of these units yesterday and got them up and running fairly easily.  I was a bit disturbed to check them today and see they ran for only about an hour before the hashrate plummeted and became unstable.  After about 10 hours they stopped hashing completely.

Any tips for getting these to run stable?  Is there a recommended method of restarting the software once it crashes?  I'd hate to think that I'll have to be checking on these things every few hours to get my $0.45 per day from them...  It's a bit late in the Bitcoin mining game to have such instability I would think, especially considering these miners have been out for some time now.

My unit has been running perfectly stable since I got it and it was the first of the batch 1 units. Perhaps internet issues? Have you ensured you're on the latest build as well which is 0.3.2?

I haven't checked to see if I'm using the latest build.  I assume I am because I just received the units, but I guess anything is possible.  How would I go about checking the firmware on these miners?

I did take them off a usb hub and have them directly connected to a PC now, which might help, who knows.  I also added some lines of code to the .bat file so that in the event it does freeze again, it will restart the mining software automatically (I would recommend this for anyone who is having issues and having to manually restart the software).  I think this will help a bit at least with the problem of them being down completely for long periods of time.  With any luck, it was the usb hub causing issues.

Any known issues with these and mining on Nicehash?  What url are people using?  I had to remove the stratum-tcp:// prefix in order for it to work so I'm wondering if Nicehash as a pool might be another possible issue.

I'm so happy bros, no one else I know cares (they'll fall asleep once I start talking about crypto collectables) but I wanted to tell someone. I've been on the hunt for months for one, its post fork, 4xxxx serial number but idc, I HAVE A SATORI CHIP WOOOOOOOOOOOO

Pics or it didn't happen.  Cheesy

So what we are seeing is the result of the Russian crypto ban fud + Kazachstan internet shutdown + WW3 scares + interest rate fud.

Thats a lot of FUD for one month. If China invades Taiwan and Ukraine gets invaded then I am seeing really nice buying prices for this year. 10k would be nice.

100k is coming, one way or another. The question is not if, but when.

I was thinking the Crypto.com hack was what pushed us down with this latest leg...  Scary because it wasn't THAT much crypto that was stolen.  Something like 440 BTC and 4,000 ETH or thereabouts...  When you think about mtgox dumping 200,000 BTC onto the market and ETH 2.0 releasing billions worth of ETH that has been staked on the market, it's a bit scary.  I think we're witnessing the big boys get ahead of this coming wave of dumping.  Likely every bounce will be heavily sold until this cloud is removed from hanging over the market's head.  Without a spot ETF in the US to soak up some of this coming liquidity, we might look back at $35K and wish for those days.

These silver wallet sets seem to be a popular dip buy this time around.  Smiley  I hope to see some pictures once buyers get them in hand.  Feels like buyers have been a bit shy with their precious gatherings lately.  I might have to start posting pics of engraving/packaging orders to spruce up this thread a bit.

If you're worried about Bitcoin's price dip and want to get your hands on some .9999 silver, it would be hard to find a better deal for generated addresses engraved onto precious metal.  Similar items around here sell for quite a bit more (~4x as much) and don't include things like colorization and .9999 silver.  These deals can't last forever...

We are all going to DIE!!!

Slightly humorous that this marked the absolute bottom in the short term. I’m sort of hoping that we get a recovery from here just so that this was the ultimate buy signal, if for nothing else then it is an absolutely perfect example of market sentiment and behavior. Reminds me of the buy when there’s blood in the streets line. I’m not confident we won’t revisit the 20’s before all is said and done, maybe even as low as $10K, but it sure would be nice if this post marked the bottom…

We are all going to DIE!!!
Well not now - mentally already dead- physically soonish  Shocked

I sure hope this marks the bottom! Things are getting a little wild in the short term. When people start screaming we’re all going to die that has got to be a buy signal. Lol

Apparently $34K is the we’re all going to die level. I hope it holds. Smiley

Don’t fret too much. It’s just numbers on a screen after all.
6559  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcing the FutureBit Apollo BTC - A Full Node/Mining Platform for the Home! on: January 22, 2022, 01:32:47 AM
I got my notification and can't wait to try out one of these bad boys.  Great to know they're getting out the door.

Maybe a hair premature on my part.  Looks like while the label was printed, there is still yet to be a package sent to the shipper.  I'll update when I have the product in my hand, or maybe once the package is actually shipped.  Sorry if I got anyone's hopes up.  On the plus side, they seem to be shipping from nearby, so once the package is in route I'm sure it will be a quick process.  I'm guessing they're packaging and getting these units out the door as quickly as possible and perhaps are working through a giant stack of shipping labels.

Yea it can take a few days before they get to fedex after we issue a label, everything should be picked up by tomorrow. Yea this was a huge week, production is cranking them out but we are understaffed on the packaging/shipping side since half the team got covid  Undecided

I also see these bad boys selling on eBay at a decent profit (more than double the cost) which is extremely tempting given the current situation.  I may try and unload one to get all my BTC back now that prices are lower, or I may just enjoy mining BTC silently in my office like the old days.  For now, I'm enjoying watching the red lights blink.
6560  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 22, 2022, 12:29:50 AM
Looks a lot like 2018 and that means get ready for rising difficulty and dropping prices.

Indeed.  The 4-year cycle didn't play out exactly like the previous 2, but it certainly rhymed.  No reason to expect we won't see a long slide down to $10K over the next 2-3 years as a result.  I hope not, but that can't be ignored.

For now, I'm on capitulation watch.  So far the volume on this drop below $40K is less than the volume that dropped us below $50K, so I'm not sure we've seen the bottom yet.  The dead cat bounce will hopefully get us back up to retest $50K and give some people an opportunity to do some cashing out, but that might be a pipe dream.

My hopes are that we jump back above $53K on some good news and can resume the upward rise.  My thoughts are telling me we'll see a sub $30K Bitcoin before the bleeding stops, and then likely a slow bleed that could potentially last years as value is extracted from Bitcoin by those who are overextended to that asset class (probably all of us).
