Is your password really long? I seem to remember there being a bug with changing super long passwords.
6562  Other / Meta / Re: Signature limits. on: June 12, 2011, 08:46:55 PM
what's the number of posts required to enable sigs - I just spent a day writing a signature generator for bitcoins.lc hash rate and would like to put it as my sig (once I iron out a few issues)

Links require 10 posts and images 50.

The high image requirement is due mostly to the threat of users who embed "images" that are actually referral links, spreading their referral cookies to everyone.

Honestly I wouldn't frequent a forum with signatures unless the people in it talked about Bitcoin nonstop. Signatures are awful. Can there be a way to not see them?

You can disable the display of signatures in your profile settings.
6563  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcoin forum theme that matches the front page? [Bounty: .25 BTC] on: June 12, 2011, 08:43:05 PM
I like this theme. It's minimalistic.

(It was also heavily modified by Satoshi, so it would be nice to keep it for historical reasons.)
6564  Other / Beginners & Help / Newbie restrictions on: June 12, 2011, 07:47:18 PM
Due to a mass of trolling, only established posters are able to post in non-newbie sections. You are considered "established" if you have made one post and then waited 4 hours. This post must be substantial: at least several sentences.

If you have really good posts, you can post a request for preemptive whitelisting in the appropriate topic.

Also:
- Newbies cannot upload their own avatars.
- You must have made one post in order to send PMs.
- You need 10 posts to put a link in your signature.

Note that it may take up to 10 minutes for your PM or posting permissions to be granted. (The system automatically checks every 10 minutes and promotes people as appropriate.)

What a horrific mess... Merging many topics together is a terrible idea (especially into a topic that was not meant for it).

No discussion can happen in this topic any more. If you want to respond to something, quote it and start a new topic.
6566  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How is the hash of a transaction calculated? (Move to dev discussion please?) on: June 12, 2011, 12:59:30 PM
You need to put that data into the binary format before hashing it.
6567  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 12:07:51 PM
You now need only 4 hours of online time plus 5 posts to become established. 8 hours seemed a little hard to get -- it might take some people several days.
6568  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 11:38:10 AM
You were banned because you are a troll. Every single post of yours was complaining about the forum. You even offered to post junk posts for people.

And now you're banned on this account, too...
6569  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 10:47:07 AM
Also, I created a new thread yesterday in "Off-topic", which title was "Please, stop having children.", and where we were discussing overpopulation.
Apparently, it got deleted.
I'm not sure what my post count was at that time. Does it have anything to do with these "newbie restrictions", or was it just deleted because some moderator didn't like it?

Restored. It must have looked "trollish" to whoever deleted it.

Let me know if there were any other false positives like this.
6570  Other / Meta / Re: Can you please set the Newbie section to not show up in "unread posts since last on: June 12, 2011, 10:11:44 AM
You can ignore it in your profile.

Some people might be interested in posts there, so I won't make this the default.

PM me.
6572  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 09:43:15 AM
I fit that profile and still can't post.

Until that's resolved, could I get whitelisted? I think my prior posts speak for themselves.

I think it may take up to four hours for the board to update your member group. (Otherwise, maybe I have to do it manually with a cron job or something.)
6573  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 09:37:52 AM
Actually TBH, I think that's an even worse as most people who join this forums and are reasonably active don't take 8 hours to reach 50 posts. Now, this promotes people to just leave it open as a tab rather than post (which could give an indication to moderator's that someone is a troll/spammer) which doesn't seem to me, to be that great.

I don't think it's unreasonable to ask newbies to lurk for 8 hours before posting. Trolls can easily bypass it, of course, which is why there is also a post limitation. Hopefully mods will notice their spam before it starts getting out of this section.
6574  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 08:56:52 AM
I wonder if this could be done with the restriction being placed on the amount of time the member has been registered for, rather than the post count.

Already done. You are "established".
6575  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 08:15:06 AM
I seem to have met both of those requirements but I still cannot post outside this board.  Would it be possible for me to be whitelisted?

You've only spent 6 hours online.
6576  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 08:08:43 AM
Thanks to some code provided by Disposition, there is now a mix of post count and "time online" requirements. You must have spent 8 hours online and posted 5 posts. This should be easier to do.
6577  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need several moderators on: June 12, 2011, 08:04:18 AM
I think we have enough for now. Thanks to all applicants and new moderators.
6578  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What should bitcoin.org do with the forums? Vote on: June 12, 2011, 06:50:43 AM
The 50 post limit will be reduced. Probably the "newbies" section will be removed once the moderation tools have been improved.
6579  Other / Meta / Re: The sensible way to cut down on forum spam.... on: June 12, 2011, 06:13:10 AM
Email verification is useless. Anyone with access to a domain name can receive an unlimited number of verifications until that service is blocked, and then they can move on to another domain name.

IP blocking works alright if you spend a lot of time building proxy blocklists, but SMF doesn't have the tools to do it properly.
6580  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbie restrictions (Please discuss forum policy here.) on: June 12, 2011, 05:37:36 AM
The other restrictions may be reduced or eliminated later, once things have calmed down.
