Quote
hashrate.org
NOW YOU CAN MINE NXT WITH SHA-256 OR SCRYPT MINING HARDWARE!
What is that about? I though transaction verification happens by POS? Or is this an effort to distribute donated NXT to enhance distribution?

And where can I find that NXT updated distribution doc?

Hashrate.org is a multi alt coin pool that mines the most profitable altcoin and sells to nxt. so your mining alts and getting paid in nxt. Nxt still operates on pos.
This is good for ppl with obsolete mining equipment and nxt itslef as more buy orders will be created regulary. cant help you on the document your after sorry

But there must be some cost associated (buying nxt from exchanges to pay the miners etc.). Who is paying for this?

I can point my miner at a pool or multi-pool and mine crapcoin
Then I have to sell this through an exchange myself.

Basically hashrate do both steps for you - the fees are paid out of the coins traded on the exchanges for NXT.
They take a pool fee from the NXT 1%
The rest is sent to you.

In just a couple hours I will be doing the daily payout for http://hashrate.org and today it looks like somewhere in the range of 5000 NXT (at least) will be getting sent out to the miners.

Thanks for the payout...

Folks you have some spare miners scrypt or sha - why not point it at hashrate.org or nxtp00l.org and get NXT, they mine crapcoin sell and send you NXT direct to your account... I've got about 500 nxt so far...

I'm almost out of the PoW game but dumping what little crapcoin I can mine to gain NXT is what i've been doing anyway, doing it this way takes out the hassle of selling / buying it myself.

AND 'No' this DOES NOT make NXT A PoW coin....

664  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: March 23, 2014, 07:58:34 AM

PoW= Mining
PoS= Forging
PoI= Foraging
or
PoI= Guarding

NXT chose to use the word forging in the metallurgical sense, unfortunately the general public views it with a criminal connotation.
I like the idea of having a new name for POI, but from a marketing perspective foraging is not much better.

I looked-up foraging in Merriam-Webster and several other dictionaries.

Definition of Forage.
1: Food for animals especially when taken by browsing or grazing. Grasses and other plants that are eaten by animals (such as cows).
2: Search for provisions. To wander in search of forage or food, browse, graze, pasture, rustle.

Agriculture and animal husbandry? Does this sound like NEM?

Foraging has a lot of associations and many are negative:
browsing, collecting, combing, eat, explore, feed, ferret, fodder, gathering, graze, harvesting, hunt, looking for, nibble, nose around, peeking,
peering, pilfer, plunder, probing, prying, raid, ransack, ravage, rifling, root about, rummage around, rummaging, scavenge, scouring, scrounge,
searching, seeking, sifting.

"I am mining bitcoin." or "I mine bitcoin." or "We are mining bitcoin." Sounds fine.
"I am forging NXT." or "I forge NXT." or "We are forging NXT."  Sounds like we are coping NXT illegally.
"I am foraging NEM." or I forage NEM." or "We are foraging NEM." Makes us sound like we are cows foraging in the pasture.
"I am guarding NEM." or I guard NEM." or "We are guarding NEM." Sounds slightly better.

Foraging implies searching and collecting.
If you are a forager for NEM you are randomly, willy-nilly searching and collecting NEM.

A guard protects and gets paid.
If you are a guard for NEM you are protecting the NEM network and can get compensated with the transaction fee.
NEM soldiers guarding the NEM network.

Also the pronunciation of foraging is too silmilar to forging, some people will find it confusing when they hear it.
The forging mechanism in NEM needs to have it's own term for PoI. Guarding is a better description, but we need to think more about this and
come up with the perfect name.

sorry patmast3r, I did notice the "typo" and thought it was a joke or typo. I like reading your posts, it's just my logomisia.

Interesting post - I dont understand the obsession with using a physical activity verb-form which has no physical representation at all...
Why not accept that what a node will be doing is validating a NEM transaction, drop the fiction of some hard to relate physical activity
Words that could be used (mundane) I agree...

Validate - Validater - Validating - Validation
Ratify - Ratifier - Ratifying - Ratification
Affirm - Affirmer - Affirming - Affirmation
Confirm - Confirmer - Confirming - Confirmation

Wesley,
Have you considered implementing a random character generator into the nxt client, and then saving that string in a local file encrypted by a password chosen on the first login? It would act as the equivalent of a wallet file.

I can write the scripts for you in whatever language you need...

Or the user can just save it in a browser based password manager (I use lastpass but there are several other choices) They won't have type to the password again as the plugins have one click auto-fill option, and the users will have an encrypted backup online with 2 factor authentication.

Firstly - Why not allow the user to print out the brain wallet password encrypted with their friendly password as a hard / cold backup.
You can do it as a QR code which can be scanned back in by a webcam.
If the data is encrypted with their 'friendly' wallet password someone cant just 'scan it in and use it'

Secondly if its all web based why not use the browser to help you - you get it to store the password for you.
Why not store the encrypted brainwallet password in the browser password cache, lots of browsers have plans for password syncing like apple does with iCloud keychain, if its seen as a password entry field by the browser then won't apps like last pass will automatically manage it?

So the client front page would have 'encrypted brain wallet password field' - visible/invisible?? recognised as a password field for autofill and the browser would fill this in, for first time use you could have a generate brain wallet password button that populates this field.
Also this form would have a friendly password field where the user puts their friendly password to decrypt the encrypted brain wallet password.

ideally you want to set the field properties to stop the normal password being stored, i.e. so its not stored with the brain wallet password it is used to decrypt which it seems you can do from some of the websites I have visited.

for ultra paranoid users you could even have the scan QR code on the front page of the client to retrieve the encrypted brain wallet password - not storing it online at all and then enter the friendly password to unlock it.

since we are doing non-unique names we may as well lower the price of issuing an asset down to the same price as any other transaction. (0.1nxt as it stand now i think right)

can anyone think of a good reason not to?

Let's leave it as is to keep entry barrier high enough. To limit number of scam attempts.

Good idea, especially at start.

Yes someone will DDOS the AE by creating loads of assets... we should not make the price too low.
667  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 22, 2014, 06:41:09 AM
Any theories on the recent price movements in Nxt? Both the downswing and the upswing of recent days show a striking independence from the price of Bitcoin, and it seems like Nxt and AUR are the only top-10 alts whose price movements have become a bit detached from BTC. (Litecoin's brief spike was clearly due to talk of a big Chinese exchange being about to add LTC). Are Nxt's recent movements due entirely to the whales unloading a big pile, then the pile eventually getting all bought up? Or is something else/more going on? Other factors seem to be the imminent release of the AE and the new development of Nxt mining. Thoughts?

I've posted this before....

Quote from: Chanc3r
I think BTC will soon register as a cause of global warming the way its is soaking up the worlds energy supply for something that is a mathematical fiction and simply not needed.

Most crypto enthusiasts are sitting on mining H/W of some form and therefore tend to be enthusiastic about new coins they can rape mine with the H/W they can't use on other coins anymore.. hence the lack of

Putting aside distribution issues PoS seems to be more about technology, innovation and driving value through use - which is a lot harder but much healthier in the long term for everyone involved.

The dip - some FUD but more importantly NXT stakeholders improving distribution by selling....

The rise - My personal view I think NXT is breaking through in technology and innovation while others are just talking about it.... The first two of these are evident in this thread, the 3rd one, driving use, is harder but I'm sure as some of the innovations which are very close are delivered then we will see this happen.

EDIT: I think its this community that helps drive our independence from the bitcoin world...

Yes, we still haven't hit a SHA256 round.
As soon as we do, I am going to replacing the SHA256 port with a P2P port to ensure more consistant SHA payouts.

I'm hashing SHA-256 on nxtp00l.org.. but interest seems to be dropping so I may move my miner..
Are you guys running both this and hashrate? I'm confused about that.
Also what do you have in this space on hashrate?  - site only shows the scrypt stats which is why I haven't used it.

Well, I am lucky that my brain is quantum compatible.

What about yours?

After I started working on Nxt my IQ went from 68 to 83. I hope this will be enough.

I assume those numbers are hexadecimals...  Grin

Whenever anyone observes your IQ then their act of observation will be altering it...
Is that a good thing  Huh

Hey guys, http://hashrate.org has had a bit of a facelift.
Yesterday we paid out 0.008 BTC/MH/day equivilent in NXT - why mine anywhere else?

Great job on this, I'd really like to see a layman's guide on your page as well, for those that want to mine a little bit;

Check the new "Getting Started" section

This payout is scrypt I take it Wink

hasrate.org vs nxtp00l.org ?

Dunno... I got my first payout of 415 NXT from nxtp00l Smiley
672  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 20, 2014, 07:24:10 PM
Sorry -- I should be more clear.  You can set prices for assets in Nxt, yes, but there's nothing stopping anyone from building a system on top of the AE that automatically converts/arbitrages for other currencies.  At that point, the price in Nxt can be hidden completely.  As an analog, think of the way enterprising folks have made Nxt "minable" at hashrate.org and p00l.org.  Suddenly our lightweight PoS coin is subject to the same PoW arms race as every other currency -- for better or for worse.

If someone creates a system, and the market prefers that system, then that system wins regardless of your wishes or desires.

I'm not saying I'm a fan of this.  I'm just acknowledging reality.  Now is a good time to plug my new favorite book: "Who Owns The Future?"

"Controlled" and "decentralized" don't mix, outside of the basic primitives that define the system (i.e. the blockchain and transaction model).  It's impossible to predict what the market will create on top of a system like Nxt.  BCNext has a vision for Nxt, but he's gone and nobody is forced to adhere to any part of his plan.

The BEST example of this, right now, is the "mining culture" for Bitcoin.  If Satoshi knew that his creation would result in massive centralized CPU farms burning $17 million in electricity per day, he may have had second thoughts.  Now that Pandora has unleashed this model unto the world, though, it is here to stay.

I my experience utility drives price and value especially where the supply is fixed... All of these uses for NXT will drive the price of NXT, what is the difference whether the price of something is in $ £ BTC DGE or whatever ?

How is AE different to a shop or a website? Prices there will be quoted in FIAT probably to insulate from EXCH risk and if people choose NXT to pay they will go through the equivalent of NXTPay or its equivalent.

Demand where supply is inflexible drives price - what ever source that demand is ... Any business or person that is using NXT will hold more NXT than they transact.

I see no reason to control and I think people are being too purist about the uses that NXT is put too...

RIGHT NOW THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT IT IS USED...
673  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information on: March 20, 2014, 05:45:37 AM
this can be mined now with scrypt gpus? What? How did this happen, and what kind of returns is this seeing?

please take a look at:
https://nextcoin.org/index.php/topic,4399.0.html

two pools available:

http://hashrate.org/
http://www.p00l.org/

both pool are in beta phase.

EDIT: nxt pool mine sh*t coin and automatically exchange them for nxt, then the pool pay you with nxt.

I've pointed my KnC miner at it to see what happens Smiley
Think the pool stats are a bit variable but will be interesting to see what the pool can earn in NXT per Gh, I like the idea of mine and dump the crap to get NXT...

The only person who can delete them is you, and I wouldn't be surprised if you deleted one, forgot and then blamed us for it...

I believe it's a Thingamajig.

But it cóuld be a doohickey.  Smiley

You plug it into the spare PCI Express x1 slot in your motherboard then you can add an extra graphics card for your scrypt miner
