681  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What do you Think about this Coin idea? on: June 19, 2013, 08:47:02 AM
With the US government spy/surveillance acts revealed, and anonymity of cryptocoins being one of its virtues, do you really think messaging attached with the actual transaction is a good idea?  Really?  A key of some sort in the title is enough for any business to have the transaction correspond with their own database.  To include more personal info to be (potentially) available on the block chain just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.
682  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New Hashing Algorithms on: June 18, 2013, 11:24:16 PM
I'd really like to see more *completely* different altcoins. like emunie

Problem with new algos is confidence in security and integrity of the network.  It will take time for EMU to gain the confidence that SHA256 and Scrypt has.  Plus, I'm pretty sure there's an exploit waiting to be discovered/used.  I personally have dozens of Amazon EC2 cores ready to own that coin.  And when I say 'own' I mean that perjoratively.  Cheesy
683  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Pools (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Proportional Payout Pools with 5% Finder Reward on: June 15, 2013, 02:52:58 PM
Just to be clear, reward when I find a block is

A) [ (ratio of shares submitted to total pool shares ) * (block reward) ] + (5% * block reward)

or

B) [ (ratio of shares submitted to total pool shares) * (95% * block reward) ] + (5% * block reward)

Huh?
684  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: when a coin is launched getting first connection? How to you get it going? on: June 15, 2013, 03:53:53 AM
when a coin has died and there is no connection? How to you get it going?

i guess my question is when a coin is launched how do you get it going? i tried virtual machines trying to connect to each other.Did not work

You need two nodes for it to work.  Set up two miners, either on same computer or separate.  One connection to the host won't work.

I think you need to google Kimoto Chan!

Duh!! The joke is on you!

Nah. I know.  Tough to take this coin seriously with no website, project announcements, or dev team.  Actually, the coin and its dev is the joke, smarty.
686  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] [MEC] Megacoin has arrived. Scrypt & Core 0.8.2+ Updates: CPU Fix & Ports on: June 15, 2013, 02:10:19 AM
You can't expect to hear from the dr. since it is the weekend in Mt. Gox land. Of course they all work saturdays so maybe.

He works at GOX?

yes

Says who?  Baby Jesus?

the one and only, Dr. Kimoto will let you know also

A CV would suffice.   Some facts to confirm claims for ourselves instead of reading nonsense in a forum.

Dr Kimoto Chan is a false name just like yours. He is not using his real name. Only coins with bitcoin clients will make it on gox. It seems that the plan is to use a second coin as authentication for fiat transfers, similar to how paypal charges a small amount to your credit card to ascertain validity. MEC is probably that coin. Perhaps with their june engine update.

Alas I'm not releasing a coin.  His username is Kimoto and yet he added Dr. and Chan.  Why?  To add credibility is the obvious answer.  So I'm calling him out on it.  I want to see a CV and the university where he received his doctorate and his thesis adviser.  Things I can confirm for myself with a simple phone call.  The PnD game on these forums isn't a secret.  But to blatantly lie to fool people with regards to credibility is something else and it should be combated.  The same should go for any claim or masked premine/instamine, or profiteering scheme like Solidcoin/Microcash.  Transparency is key.  Or how else can we trust coins and their dev teams?

From Dr Kimoto:

Well a short summary: Have a coin that isn't backed by a incredibly stale development "team" (LTC) that asks for donations. I've been mirroring BTC every step along the way but using scrypt.  The coin distribution may sound weird, but it was highly calculated as well to provide benefits to all who wish to join and long term potential.  Not have an insane block time and a block re-target calculation that works for most situations (without making people re download their clients weeks later) and survive the initial surges. This is definitely not a pump in dump.  I recoded in a very short time what several people couldn't in over a year.

He is also developing a website for this coin that is going to be quote "kick ass" whatever that means....
Developing the back end tools to easily add payment gateway stuff to your website.
As mentioned before, it uses the most recent Bitcoin code using scrypt. Something that the litecoin "team" has been unable to do.

The coin is basically the only Unique coin to come out since litecoin just under the software tree its using. All the other coins (and there are many) are essentially copy and paste with nothing more added except changes in the coins/re-targets.

The skills of this Dev are certainly par above many of the other coin dev's and we should expect to see some great things.

So weird you had to relay the message instead of posting it himself.
690  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / BTC and LTC aren't the only ones with mining profit difficulties on: June 14, 2013, 11:06:44 PM
Current gold prices have some mining companies' mines turning a loss:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/kitconews/2013/06/14/feature-is-it-sustainable-to-mine-gold-in-this-current-price-environment/?partner=yahootix

We've also seen similar phenomenon in the iron ore industry, as those mines based off of older (more costly) technology are forecast to be shut down by the end of 2014.  Checkout Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. stock price from past 2 years:

http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=CLF+Interactive#symbol=clf;range=2y;compare=;indicator=volume;charttype=candlestick;crosshair=on;ohlcvalues=0;logscale=off;source=undefined;

Nevertheless, since my cost of electricity is about $0.10 kwh, I foresee mining LTC (and all altcoins) with my 12 7970 gpu setup staying in the black for awhile...

I pm'd Komoto to see his CV.  Given he's a doctor, I assume he has one like all doctors.  No reply so far.

Is there even a website for this coin?  Any projects on the docket?  A dev team working on the basics, like payment processing?

Another day has passed and still nothing.  No reply, no website, no project announcements, no dev team introductions, nothing...

How are we supposed to educate ourselves about the prospects of a coin and its dev team, as well as the legitimacy of their claims?

693  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MEGAcoin Pool - We need your hashing power! on: June 14, 2013, 04:41:54 AM
It's a scam pool.  Clearly avoiding accountability with all its disclaimers about the pool being in beta and using it at your own risk.  I submitted shares for a few rounds and left to see how it pays after 120 confirms, but my unpaid shares went to zero and now I can't even access account info because it goes to some php error page.  Avoid this pool.

695  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: FPGA/GPU optimized but ASIC proof SHA256 coin? Is it possible? on: June 13, 2013, 06:54:20 PM
Sure, just do sha256(sha256(sha256))) instead of sha256(sha256)

-MarkM-

Begs the question, what are the benefits of deep nested SHA256 versus Scrypt algo?  This is interesting, both from a hardware perspective as well as programming/software.  I'm almost tempted to get something running on testnet and analyze performance differences.

Is your memecoin pool updated to new client just released?  Is your pool on official blockchain?  Thanks.

Hmm.  And yet, they want to implement an 'anonymous' messing service.  Funny.
698  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Alt valuations versus BTC - why still? on: June 11, 2013, 03:52:26 AM
If a virtual currency can be exchanged for USD on a website then Fincen classifies said website as a money exchanger and requires a permit.  Cryptsy is Fincen compliant, and you'll be able to exchange your coins into USD soon.

This trojan seems to be a specific trojan from a few years back:

http://community.trendmicro.com/t5/Malware-Discussions/TROJ-GEN-detected-but-not-removed/td-p/45407

Moreover, this messaging idea has been mentioned twice:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=220530.0
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=226582.0

It could be a good idea on paper to weaken your guard.  You know, kind of like all these recent altcoins have been doing.  Although I admit a few have some genuine web projects up and running.  Just use caution, people...
700  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN][STABLECOIN][POOL][PPLNS][STRATUM][1% FEE] Silverwolf's StableCoin Pool on: June 09, 2013, 04:00:16 AM
I am increasing mine to 5% donation.  Have you fixed the issue that allowed the individual to do that?

Thank You for helping !

I'm pretty sure he used some kind of software or plugin to submit the post data for a manual withdrawal several times in rapid succession (all within the same second), this resulted in multiple payouts being started before the first payout was completed and his balance was reset to 0.

Automatic withdrawals are not subject to this vulnerability because they are run by the cron job.  They cannot be triggered manually.

Manual Withdraws have been disabled completely.  Automatic Withdraws are working normally.

I will not re-enable Manual Withdraws until I'm certain the issue has been fixed.  So we are safe from this happening again, we just won't be able to do manual withdrawals until I can figure it out.

Hey, about you delete that post...for obvious reasons.  At the very least, don't include details of the attack. lol
