6821  Economy / Economics / Re: Investor Sentiment on the Cryptocurrency market on: October 19, 2018, 10:59:23 AM
Hello everyone,

I am currently working on my Master Thesis and as you can guess, the subject of it is ‘Investor Sentiment on the Cryptocurrency market’.

I came on this forum to get answers from the people who have already invested in cryptocurrencies or are actually experimented on this subject. My question to all of you is the following: From your point of view, what could be the factors responsible of sentiment on the cryptocurrency market ?

Just to clarify the terms used in my question, Baker and Wurgler (2006) gives two definition of investor sentiment:
1) The propensity to take risks and to speculate.
2) The overall sense of optimism or pessimism about stocks

Also if you have any papers that could contribute to my Literature Review, I am willing to take your suggestions.

Best,

ycollin

Hey Ycollin you have taken an interesting topic and I hope you write a good thesis, now coming back to your question there're multiple factors which lead to sentiments being high some are expected price hike, or a positive news which shall fuel price hikes, a prominent person throwing his weight behind cryptos, or a big organisation adopting it. It's pertinent to note that if any big country's government issues a positive signal for bitcoins its sentiment rises, as of now sentiments are bullish due to imminent pending approval of bitcoins etf.
6822  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Lost $350k / 54 BTC gambling, need help :( on: October 19, 2018, 07:21:49 AM
Yes, I am Mannton456, I’m going to post it on the crypto-Games chat to prove it’s me. This is my story of loss.

I’ve always had a inclination for making reckless decisions. While I don’t gamble on a regular basis and prided myself on making sensible decisions, like investing in the bankroll of a bitcoin casino (to benefit from +EV), one day I decided to gamble with 3 BTC.

I won some bitcoins, and called it a day. The next day, I was bored and decided to give it another go. Lost everything. Now I don’t like losing, so my only strategy was to deposit almost 10x the amount - 20 BTC, and try to win it back again. I did and managed to turn it to 30 BTC. My heart was shaking and the adrenaline I had was incredible. I reinvested it in the site, and went to bed happy.

Unfortunately, the next day I decided to just do one bet of the entire balance, at 97% odds. I lost. Shit. I was operating in automatic mode and deposited a further 50 BTC, and tried to bet again. Lost again. I felt like ending my life.

I did something even more stupid and deposited another 70 BTC, almost the last remaining bitcoins I’ve had. Thankfully I was able to win back 30 BTC before I stopped and withdrew; putting my net loss at -54 bitcoins.

This is worth $350k USD. I am at a loss. I don’t think I will ever gamble again, but this is such an expensive lesson for me. I could’ve bought a house or apartment for that money. I could’ve bought 7 Tesla’s!

It’s also the first time I’ve lost anything more than $20 gambling. I don’t gamble a lot, and when I do it’s always with small amounts. But it was easy to see bitcoins as “not money” and that you’re just playing a game... with real money, and real life consequences.

I am someone in my 20s who got into cryptocurrency early. Thankfully, I do still have about $1.5 million in crypto and other investments, but losing 350k and 20% of your net wealth in the span of an hour is just... devastating to me. How did I end up risking $350k for a $18k loss?!

I’m having thoughts of going “all in” and trying to win it back. I know it’s a bad idea, a real bad one, but I’m someone who likes going big or going home.

I don’t know what to do at this point. I know I will survive, at least I’m not in debt, but fuck, I’m upset. I’m really depressed, and thoughts of killing myself have floated my mind.

Hey first of all stop focusing on what you lost that money is not coming back, now look at the bigger picture are you bankrupt no, do you have debts to pay no you're yet a millionaire, something that an average gambler wishes to achieve. I would suggest you to read a book called you can heal your life by Louis Hay, also visit gambling forums where you'll find similar gamblers and speak your heart there. I would just call it a bad luck, and remember you have a good amount of crypto left, if cryptos prices rise you'll recover all you lost, dying is not a solution remain strong.

6823  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cricket match prediction discussions on: October 19, 2018, 03:50:00 AM
I really can't see Australia winning this test match with the current team they have, maybe if Smith and Warner were playing then yes I would give them a chance to win the match. Australia are already 1 wicket down with just 47 runs on the board and still trail by 491 runs to win. I just can't see this happening even though there is enough time in the match for them to achieve this. Pakistan have simply been the better team this whole series even in the first test match as Australia just got lucky to save the test. Pakistan should go on to winning this test match which they really deserve and again Australia continue to fail playing in the Middle East.

I'll second that Pakistan has really raised their level overall, and Australia have not been able to do the same which is surprising. Even though they don't have Smith and Warner it's no excuse for them to play such poor cricket. If you'll remember even in the last match they deserved to loose, but they pulled a draw which I felt was harsh on Pakistan. Australia has already lost a wicket and I don't see them lasting long.

Kaneria ex Pakistan leg spinner has dropped a bombshell by admitting to spot fixing, it's pertinent to note he's been lying since 6 years, this will raise lots of questions about Pakistan and it's cricketers.
6824  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Should there be that many cryptocurrencies that exists? on: October 18, 2018, 06:03:30 PM
As of August 2018, there are over 1600 cryptocurrencies that exist, according to Wikipedia. I know that Wikipedia isn't the most reliable of sources because anyone can edit it whenever they want, but the point is the number of cryptocurrencies being introduced. Some of the new cryptocurrencies I've heard were DeepBrainChain, ByteCoin, IOST, and Elastos. There's also a new coin called Virie, which is apparently a cryptocurrency used to crowdfund and jumpstart the Virternity Project, a project that aims to digitized our minds, economy and the society. I believe that not all new coins aim to scam people, but do we really need more cryptocurrencies? Do we need new cryptocurrencies for every project that exists? Why can't there be one or five cryptocurrencies that all projects can use?

I will not comment on the number quoted by Wikipedia, but it's indeed true there're many cryptos in the market and it's very difficult to keep a track of those. I have always preferred quality over quantity, but when it comes to crypto world sadly that's not the case. There's nothing one can do expect weed out the spammy coins and if interested collect decent ones, while I don't like alts I have added few to diversify my portfolio but I'll sell them as soon they rise and buy more bitcoins.

Hi there Frodoe,

Sorry to hear about your trouble with the payment! Without knowing the specifics, it sounds like the the charge you see is only an authorization hold.

How can you say "there is no specifics" when OP said you're not responding to his ticket?

Hey Frodoe after reading all the comments all I can say you'll be lucky if you get your funds back, I had never heard of this exchange before so decided to a quick search, and it's pertinent to note there're many positive comments I'm going to highlight the ones that match fredo case, in this link http://bittrust.org/coinmama
if you see from the top there's a similar story, and that user I suppose didn't get his funds. As I see there's a coin mama representative here I'm sure we'll get some answers.

For all newbies whenever you buy online do a quick google search, read about them here, avoid exchanges you can buy here using escrow just a quick search here will list all escrows, and reputed sellers.

6826  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Tennis League All Thread on: October 18, 2018, 07:39:32 AM
I just read that Nadal is set to return to playing at the Paris Masters. The problem Nadal has at keeping his number #1 is if Djokovic decides to take a wild card into a tournament before Paris, he could pull ahead of Nadal and become world number #1. Then if they meet in a match it could be the match that decides the world number #1 so it will be an interesting end to the season to see who finishes number #1.

I'm concerned for Nadals knee cause the last time I remember him pulling out, it didn't look very good. While I truly understand that the number one ranking is at stake here, it's an risky comeback according to me. If your hypothetical situation is believed to be true then it shall be one epic match, and I believe the longest running match as none of these two champions will give up easily. I like Nadal and would like him to finish on top, but I have to respect Djokovic for rejuvenating himself and finding his way to the top 3.
6827  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Game of Thrones - Who will rule? Odds and betting discussion [Odds updated!] on: October 18, 2018, 05:02:53 AM
Game of Thrones might be released on April 28, 2019, and not on December 2018 as rumored by some mainstream news websites.

Here is the explanation why. Also, the odds of who will rule the 7 kingdoms have also not changed that much.

Recently HBO announced that the third season of True Detective will begin on Sunday 13 January, and will run for eight episodes.

This would leave the show to finish on March 3, opening up the following week’s March 10.

Fans have pegged this as the first possibility of the show’s return - however there is a catch.

March 10 may be reserved for the return of HBO’s Big Little Lies - which stars Meryl Streep.

If Big Little Lies does return on March 10 it will run until April 21 - which leaves the following week available for Game of Thrones.

Five of the seven seasons of Game of Thrones have premiered in April, which could be further proof that April 28 may mark the return of the show.

Source https://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/1031790/game-of-thrones-season-8-release-date-hbo-night-king-jon-snow

I wasn't even aware it was coming in 2018 but that would have been false as there's no way it would come without big promotions. The date of 28th April 2018 seems more realistic as most of the past seasons have premiered then, I remember an article saying it would not come in 2019, so this is welcome news for me. I'm thinking of taking odds on Jon, Sansa and Tyrion what do you suggest?.
6828  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How much bitcoin should you buy? on: October 17, 2018, 12:01:20 PM
I was reading an article in Quartz earlier today and it was talking about how much bitcoin people should buy and how it depends on your investing goals. What else, besides the amount of money you have, affects how much bitcoin someone should buy?

The answer to this question depends on your age, your risk taking abilities, how long do you intend to hold on to it. It's also pertinent to note that you should tie it to a goal to get the best estimates, also you should factor in inflation and all the fluctuations that are part and parcel of bitcoins. I would also suggest you to read about it in details as people who have invested at high prices, have lost their value too, just be careful with this currency.
6829  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: China can destroy bitcoin on: October 17, 2018, 07:57:40 AM
very interesting when we hear that academics from Princeton University and academics from the University of Florida have concluded that China has the potential to threaten stability, internet infrastructure, security and bitcoin development.

in the world of mining, China dominates using ASIC vendors. China controls mining hashrate, so they affect the bitcoin protocol.

Is there a solution to stop that potency  ?

I feel this is a newbies favourite topic every time something happens and one starts to blame the chinese or starts to fear them which is absurd if you see. These people follow the media religiously that they don't even understand the ground reality, I'll agree China has the highest hash, but it's pertinent to note it's not one person in china or few governments officials who hold it, it's spread all over china which indicates there're several persons with several mindsets behind it's usage. It's high time newbies need to use logic, why would China people destroy the very thing that's minting them money, and the very currency which is not controlled by USA.

I'll add one more name to the list who fear China maybe someone can tweet him and explain him he's the current president of USA, link : https://www.forbes.com/sites/billybambrough/2018/10/16/chinas-bitcoin-dominance-is-worrying-trumps-white-house-and-pushing-it-toward-ripple/
6830  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: International Games Prediction Thread on: October 17, 2018, 03:38:07 AM
What surprised me most in this International break? Offcourse, 2 victories of Gibraltar against Armenia and Liechtenstein Cheesy
Now seriously, after fiasco in World Cup, Germany continue their disappointing performances. Just 1 point after 3 games. Tonight they were not that bad against France, but still, they lost. Maybe it's time to sack Low?
And I'm really surprised about England performance against Spain, where they lead 3:0 (they conceded 2 goals later but won the game). I would say that Spain squad wasn't optimal, less famous players like Rodrigo or Jonny played in that game. Give it some time to Enrique to to try reserve players and find optimal squad before important matches will start.

I was taken back when the final whistle blew and England had won the match, all the pre match talks were of Spain winning it, and I doubt anyone even believed that team England had any realistic chance of winning it. I'll agree Spain and Germany are going through a transitional phase, while I would yet give Enrique time, Leow has to go he's not the charismatic character he once was, and he has not been able to turn their fortunes around.
6831  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can we stop Bitcoin's negative publicity?-Rebranding. on: October 16, 2018, 05:57:20 PM
So I am subscribed to quite a few crypto news and general news websites; and one thing that frustrates me to no end is to see such negative publicity of this currency!
And I know most of the people are of the opinion that bitcoin doesn't really need publicity! But I think a little rebranding is very much needed to put bitcoin in the good light.Try to focus on the good things of it, its qualities, maybe it will help it to stabilize or something?
Whats your say on this?

In my personal opinion rebranding is not necessary, and even if it's done it'll not have the desired impact you're trying to achieve. These people who like to spread fud will never stop, they'll continue to spread fud and even will use the rebranded news to create more panic, if you're observing closely every time there's a slight dip in the prices there's a eye catching headline millions wiped out in minutes which is false most of the times. It's best to ignore such sites and simply focus on the good qualities of bitcoins.
6832  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is Bitcoin Setting Up For A Bull Run? on: October 16, 2018, 01:27:57 PM
Experts claim Bitcoin could be on the verge of a bull run. Read why they think the market will begin growing exponentially and when is expected to happen so you can prepare your portfolio: https://cryptocoin.news/news/is-bitcoin-setting-up-for-a-bull-run-20800/

Do you think this will happen in 2019?

I'm not really sure whether the bugle has been blown for the bull run cause yesterday price hikes was because of USDT news there's no major surge in demand. I would advise you not to fall for these so called experts who have never brought bitcoins, but will be always around to tell you a bull run is coming as soon there's some upward movements in the prices. It's always best to do your own research, read the charts and form an opinion.

Just see screenshots

It doesn't change anything. Those losing streaks are quite normal as anyone with a basic understanding of mathematics would know. Even when someone actually does have a losing streak with a low probability of happening that doesn't mean they were cheated it means they were unlucky.

unlucky 51 bets in a row?

Let's see this beautiful message "It doesn't change anything."... beacouse i stole your money and no matter how much bets you do 36...51....1000 It doesn't change anything.

return my money!

This seems like a newbie who was lured into gambling but got it completely wrong, there is no refund policy at any gambling site, if gambling sites decided to refund every loss their very existence would be in danger. I would suggest you to move on and take it as a lesson learnt hard.
Exactly! They are so happy to take winnings when they win, and god imagine if they win some million dollar jackpot that they will ever question the improbability of it. But when the more likely outcome happens (which is they eventually lose) then they get so angry and question the nature of logic.

We all gamble, knowing that it is more likely to lose, than to win big. But that's part of the appeal. To somehow make it when we're supposed not to. And that's sort of the beauty of it too!

Yeah, I've had many demanding a refund of their losses but I'm still waiting for the first big winner to come and offer to pay it back.  Wink

Exactly the point victory in gambling is not guaranteed, but people often succumb to their greed and end up making looses. If that big winner does decide to payback do let us know, as he'll create history by doing so lol.
6834  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Cricket match prediction discussions on: October 16, 2018, 03:35:00 AM
Just when it looked liked the WI batting had improved in the 1st innings they go and put in a poor batting performance in the 2nd innings. I was really hoping that they would make more of a game out of this test match but again they have let everyone down. Congrats to India on winning the series.

I was sure WI was about to crash anytime soon, their batting can be compared to the dying fire of candlestick which gives it bright light towards the end and then fades away. I feel WI lack the character and the mental strength to even last five full days, it was an abject surrender which really makes me wonder why does team India even play such teams there's no fun in playing them.
6835  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Italian League Prediction Thread (Serie A) on: October 15, 2018, 05:44:27 PM
I agree with you , the serie A is  gradually becoming the bundesliga which has one dominant team the others doesn't seem to be able to compete with and this doesn't auger well for the once very entertaining and difficult league. Apart from maybe Inter and maybe Roma, I don't see any team capable of beating Juventus.
Juventus are the early favorites to win the league as they were the previous winners but it is still early to say that Juventus will be dominating the league for this season, we are only eight games out of the 38th so what we are seeing now isn't final yet. A lot of thing can changes after the January transfer window has taken place and some of the teams will improve their roster after that. There game against Napoli as pretty close too, if it weren't for the red card Mario Rui Napoli could have keep up with a tie game.

I'll second that Italian league is mirroring the German league Juventus dominance has made the league boring to watch at times. Even though it's been just 8 games I feel Juventus will win the league with many games to spare, as they have Cristanio to help them win it. However if other teams step up and cause an upset it'll be interesting, make the league more fascinating to watch.
6836  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Venezuelan Citizens Forced to Pay for Passports in Petro on: October 15, 2018, 02:24:03 PM
Last week there was a news citing Venezuela as forcing the citizens to the use of this currency. But if the citizens don't want it will create political tensions in the country, besides the one already there. the president is going to lose his chair during the next election.
I know the headaches it is to change the national currency, they take the opportunity to increase the prices. If the wage does, no problem, but if not it' will make the population poorer

I'm surprised the current President has decided to do this as this is making the situation already worse, I don't think all citizens will have access to net or even know how to use it. Yes I'll agree this is bound to create political troubles for the already troubled country. I'm not seeing any sense in doing this yes some will say petro will gain adoption, but at the cost of the ruling party being ousted, confusion in the minds of public I would call this very bad decision, and hope it gets reversed.
6837  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin pump on binance. Already cross 7.5K USDT on: October 15, 2018, 10:03:24 AM
Just now noticed from Binance, Bitcoin already cross 7K USDT. I think big whale are playing. But on others exchange it's still $6300+. It's play time if you have btc on binance. I don't think this is bull run. Perhaps it's temp run on binance. Still down on others exchange. So be careful if you want to play.

Edit: Apologize to use $ sign. Really it is USDT. How ever it's look also effecting on USD price. Seems USD price also increasing.

I'm surprised to read this news again saw it a while on social media, then in speculation and now here honestly I thought it was a prank as preev prices were much lower. On closer inspection it seems they're deceiving users by using the usd sign when it's in fact USDT, this is malpractice and I hope people do not fall for this. They're using tether value wherein one bitcoins is 7300 tether and hence the valuation difference, I don't think this is legal, I believe they'll be reported.
6838  Economy / Speculation / Re: I don't like this stable price! on: October 15, 2018, 07:20:48 AM
For some of us that has been speculating that bitcoin is going to pull back to $3,000 and $1500 I don't think the current stability is going to allow that to come to pass and for those that said bitcoin is to moon,  maybe above $20,000 the stability is still not going to allow that to happen.  However,  if bitcoin price is not stable within a range there is not going to be adoptions buy retail and wholesale business. Stability of price is what will help bitcoin become  acceptable.

I don't know who are these people who're speculating absurd things about bitcoins touching such low levels, these people I feel have associated bitcoins with those shit alt coins which experiences such dumps. I don't think bitcoins and stability to hand in hand, and even a novice trading in bitcoins knows it can never be stable, I don't think anyone cares whether the wholesale people come in or no, as you cannot expect bitcoins to be a subsitute for your daily currency, it's prices are never going to be stable enough for that. Also it's pertinent to note that adoption in bitcoins has always been high irrespective of the stability, network fees or the fud, it's value has kept on increasing.

6840  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Germany League - Bundesliga Prediction Thread on: October 14, 2018, 05:26:01 PM
Another Setback happening this weekend is Bayern Munich losing at the Allianz Arena against Borussia Monchengladbach. This is almost similar to the way they started the season under Carlo Ancelotti last season.Jupp Heynckes May be called in to save the day once again,

I never thought I would see this happening, but it's very nice for the German league to see Bayern loose and now they're sixth in the league which is a stark contrast to last season where they won by 21 points. I believe their new manager will be given time to turn around things, but if latest rumours are true Bayern dressing room is already divided, and whenever a manager is in such a postition sooner or later he gets the sack.
