7041  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: List of fake wallets on Google Play, 20 active at the moment! on: January 19, 2021, 03:53:04 PM
<...>
According to their Developer Distribution Agreement:

Quote
8.3 Google does not undertake an obligation to monitor the Products or their content. If Google becomes aware and determines in its sole discretion that a Product or any portion thereof (a) violates any applicable law; (b) violates this Agreement, applicable policies, or other terms of service, as may be updated by Google from time to time; (c) violates terms of distribution agreements with device manufacturers and Authorized Providers; or (d) creates potential liability for, or may have an adverse impact on, Google or Authorized Providers (for example, if a Product has an adverse economic, reputational or security-related impact); then Google may reject, remove, suspend, limit the visibility of a Product on Google Play, or reclassify the Product from Google Play or from Devices. Google reserves the right to suspend and/or bar any Product and/or Developer from Google Play or from Devices as described in this Section. If Your Product contains elements that could cause serious harm to user devices or data, Google reserves the right to disable the Product or remove it from Devices on which it has been installed. If Your Product is rejected, removed, or suspended from Google Play or from Devices pursuant to this Section 8.3, then Google may withhold payments due to Developer.
https://play.google.com/intl/ALL_uk/about/developer-distribution-agreement.html

And their Content Policy:
Quote
We don’t allow apps that mislead users by impersonating someone else (e.g. another developer,  company, entity) or another app.  Don’t imply that your app is related to or authorized by someone that it isn’t.  Be careful not to use app icons, descriptions, titles, or in-app elements that could mislead users about your app’s relationship to someone else or another app.
https://play.google.com/intl/en-GB/about/developer-content-policy/

It seems that they rely pretty much on the above wording to shield themselves from responsibility of product impersonation such as wallet malware clones, and leave it largely to the community to detect and report these cases. Of course, this seems insufficient, and one could imagine a few more procedures that can be set into motion to mitigate these sort of events from happening so easily.
7042  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Armed robbers steal $450K from Hong Kong crypto trader on: January 19, 2021, 03:38:15 PM
That seems to be at least two in a row in Hong Kong just this month. On the 7th of January, this case made it to the media:
https://news.bitcoin.com/bitcoin-trader-robbed-during-an-in-person-transaction-kicked-out-of-car-in-hong-kong/

Again Hong Kong. Again a large sum (15 BTCs – 3M HKD at the time). Again a face to face meeting. Again more gang members appearing out of the blue.

Seems pretty risky business performing p2p transactions, especially if the amounts are decent. As quoted in the above link on this post:

7043  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How did you buy Bitcoin back in 2010? on: January 19, 2021, 03:24:34 PM
Purchasing bitcoin off Mt. Gox was not an easy deal, if the quantities were largish. Over 10K$ (back then) required a KYC (see https://web.archive.org/web/20121009011724/https://mtgox.zendesk.com/entries/20490576-frequently-asked-questions). That is of course a large amount, but the point here is to highlight the procedure for those cases. I found interesting to read.

Additionally, this quote corresponds to a few years after its opening, but it highlights how the process was tedious and lengthly, at least with large amounts:
Quote
<…> So they would have to go directly to the Japanese-based exchange, open their own account, and become customers. Which meant new headaches; to wire that kind of money to Mt. Gox, there were hoops they’d have to jump through. First, they had to scan their passports and mail physical legal documents to Japan—actually, to a P.O. box in Shibuya. Once their information made it over the ocean, they would still have to wait weeks for it to be processed, because the onboarding queue at Mt. Gox was so backed up. <…>
Quote from "Bitcoin Billionaires"  - Ben Mezrich

Mt. Gox before selling bitcoin (card game trading):

Mt. Gox selling bitcoins (2011 (not quite 2010, but near enough)– interesting to browse):
https://web.archive.org/web/20110203031942/https://www.mtgox.com/

They also had resellers that bought off Mt. Gox, and sold locally (i.e. BitInstant - 2011-2014).
7044  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: Limpiar BTC de KYC on: January 19, 2021, 12:54:30 PM

Knowing that you lack earning at least 1 merit to make it to Jr. Member, I’d suggest that you take a deeper look at merited posts around the forum to understand what is required, and compare the content to those you’ve been making as of late (Altcoin Discussion is also an unlikely board to receive merits on lately).

Additionally, if you take a look around this very same board (Beginners & Help), you’ll find some threads which award merits every now and then provided some conditions are met, and all it takes is a bit of time and a wee bit of effort to comply.

7047  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: ELECTRUM WALLET on: January 19, 2021, 07:22:04 AM
https://electrum.readthedocs.io/en/latest/seedphrase.html

7049  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [Warning] FAKE Chipmixer on: January 18, 2021, 07:15:30 AM
There are some threads that focus on this fake site here, reported different boards within the forum:

[Scam alert] Chippmixer.com
[ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented
Scam Bitcoin Mixers to avoid
Detected in November 2019
some with similar names

The site has been around and even detected and reported since November 2019, at it’s still out there at large. I wonder if one of the reasons for the longevity of this site is that fact that it may not be that simple to prove as other cases. A mean a fake Nike site would be trivial, but a mixer site is likely not that easy to understand. In addition, the number of reports of these sites is possibly low, which, all in all, may make it slow for these sites to be taken down.
7050  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How many people hold 1 Bitcoin at the moment? on: January 17, 2021, 06:42:53 PM
This site breaks it up by different ranges, but unfortunately, it cannot be drilled-down to break-up a particular range:

The [1..10) BTC range currently reports 675236 addresses with a balance within that range.

Let’s see if anyone finds a more granular reporting (open) site to take a look at.
7051  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: 2 box of pizza and a person who throw his hard drive on: January 17, 2021, 02:44:13 PM
The guy is now offering a 25% cut to the city council if he gets the permissions and actually manages to both recover the hard drive and the necessary information. The cut was 10% three years ago (https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/888295/bitcoin-price-uk-buy-value-wales-newport-james-howells-council-landfill-rubbish).

Apart from the needle in the haystack, there’s this to consider (quote from above referenced 2017 article):

"It is likely that the hardware would have suffered significant Galvanic corrosion due to the presence of landfill leachates and gasses."

Only one of those posts remains now not yet deleted, and the user had some deleted yesterday for posting the same content on boards that were not altcoin related (I reporte one on B&H).

I doubt he’s trying to really get an answer. More likely performing a feeble attempt to pump the price, whilst contradicting prior thoughts on the exchange being used:

yes YOBIT is a big SCAM EXCHANGE they dumping coins and ban accounts with no reasons

7055  Other / Meta / Re: To truly discourage unlawful bitcointalk sales of account on: January 17, 2021, 08:47:01 AM
<…>
Rank has some meaning to many, be it due to a sense of achievement or else.
If you can buy ranks of the shelf, you’re basically creating a comparative grievance to all existing accounts with those same ranks, stating that one can simply buy a fast track ticket to skip the queue from the forum itself.

It still would not diminish the possibility of those accounts turning into scammers (which can happen at any level by the way), and I can’t see any overall global benefit coming clean from the proposal. It also would not deter account sales – just establish a max. market price.

7057  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: "Hidden" shills on: January 16, 2021, 04:06:59 PM
One particular shilling that takes place from time to time on my local board (and other boards too) is that whereby, the topic OP compares their shilled exchange against other well-known exchanges, creating a lengthy topic on the matter. For example, they may compare security features (at a basic level), normally in a positive tone, between their shilled exchange, Binance and Coinbase. The idea behind is to create a positive placement by association to well known-exchanges. The do this from at least three different accounts, spread-out over time.

I normally report these posts, and reference their existing service thread as the place they should be performing these comparisons (deceiving as they may be). Their posting history denote the pattern, so it’s a non-brainer really.
7058  Local / Español (Spanish) / Re: Proponen regular criptomonedas a nivel europeo on: January 16, 2021, 02:54:52 PM

https://www.ironkey.com/en-US/resources/documents/IronKey_ProductFamily_US.pdf

"Permanently self-destructs after 10 incorrect password attempts to securely erase data".

Edit:

Efectivamente, hay más:
http://support.ironkey.com/article/AA-02416/0/What-happens-when-my-IronKey-self-destructs.html
7060  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Two attempts for $220 million on: January 15, 2021, 05:18:08 PM
@mole0815 pointed out that Stephan has a profile here on Bitcointalk: Stefan Tomas.

Going over his posts, he is a long standing Bitcointalk member, who was pretty involved in the early years (See for example referenced here https://bithope.org/campaign/support-the-bitcointalk-forum), and crossed posts with some of the most noticeable profiles here at the time.

In this article on the NY times, they mention how he was paid something like 7002 BTCs back in 2011 for creating a video on bitcoin:
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/12/technology/bitcoin-passwords-wallets-fortunes.html
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Um63OQz3bjo

I was doubtful as to whether the German programmer, and the profile here on Bitcointalk, were indeed the same person (and not just a name/surname coincidence), but it seems that they are indeed the same:
Bounty for Bitcoin Animated Movie [won] .
The video is the same one referenced in the NYTimes article, and the thread has relevant posts made by Stephan about the video (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=697.msg833066#msg833066 for example).

It looks like what the world sees as "a German programmer", is also part of the Bitcointalk’s history …
