Is there an easy way to track how many nodes are connected?
Look at the IRC bootstrap channel to get a rough estimate of node number. (#bitcoin on irc.lfnet.org) This doesn't reflect network hash/s, though. I have some stats related to network hash/s here: http://blockexplorer.com/q/nethash

SI prefixes have too many syllables. IMO, the words need to have only one syllable each. You also have to use longer numbers for prefixes after milli when using SI prefixes.

A website that manages loans like this might be a good idea for a project. It could calculate the appropriate starting bid and bond amount based on the specified minimum loan amount and maximum interest rate. I'd certainly be interested in loaning to reputable individuals. It might be fun.

mpkomara beat me at the last moment. This is an interesting way to get a loan. It seems much more effective than the normal way.

Terahash? We're only at 600 gigahash.
GPU mining is apparently still very profitable.

There are too many syllables in "satoshi" to make a usable unit. There are already names up to thousandths of currency units:
1 = 1 bitcoin 0.1 = 10 cents bitcoin 0.01 = 1 cent bitcoin 0.001 = 1 mill bitcoin
Then, we can add a new currency name:
0.0001 = 10 bitpiece 0.00001 = 1 bitpiece 0.000001 = 10 cent bitpiece 0.0000001 = 1 cent bitpiece 0.00000001 = 1 mill bitpiece
I think a better way would be to come up with new one-syllable names for divisions smaller than thousandths, though. I'm sure some language has such words.

I don't know why that is happening.

I may be anal here, but the bid should include the signature of my initial message, so that we know which auction we're talking about.
The date is in the signature, so there's not much chance of confusion...

Are you including the broken transaction in your spreadsheet?

Wait, so we are encouraging this ten-year-old to disobey his parents and go behind their back to use bitcoin? Are we that desperate for more bitcoin members? What's going to happen when they discover what's going on and come on this forum to find admins and hero members encouraging their kid to disobey them and download "questionable" (in their mind) software?
Did you think the Bitcoin community was going to encourage unconditional obedience to parental authority? I like the idea of thinking for yourself and bypassing restrictions. Young people will be an important part of the future Bitcoin economy. They are unable to acquire USD easily, so they will use bitcoins instead.

I don't think there's any restriction except that "*" is reserved.

So the map doesn't consider the people who use bitcoin through sites like mybitcoin.com ?
Right. People who use Bitcoin through Tor are also not included, I believe.
|
|
|
Very nice to know this! Do you know how do they keep track of this?
Bitcoin is designed such that every node has a database filled with the IP addresses of nearly every other node. The map was created by collecting these stored IP addresses from nodes and then geolocating them.

But would the correct person get the winnings?
If they use their own Bitcoin clients, then they will get it.

So, even though it says -0.10 in my transactions list, it actually doesn't get included in the Balance until there are confirmations?
Normally sends are reflected in your balance without confirmations, but I think in this case it won't be because there is a conflicting transaction. I'm not sure, though.
|
|
|
You already spent that money, so you didn't lose anything by sending it again unsuccessfully. One of your other outgoing transactions for 0.1 BTC is using the same money.
There's no way to remove the transaction using Bitcoin, though it will go away if you restore a wallet backup from before the transaction. Doing this could cause other problems, though. I'd just leave it.
