721  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Motherboard question on: May 26, 2011, 01:15:35 AM
Can I run 5 cards on there with just 1 PCIe extender?

Also I'd be using 2 PSU and I don't really know how to set it up. Can some one point me in the right direction?

I initially wanted to get 2 rigs with cheap set ups and now am turning to this Mobo for 1 rig with more cards as the savings there justified itself with an extra GPU.

Options for greatest investment:
Windows (currently 4 GPU MAX):
Buy a motherboard with 4 pci-e slots... x1,x4,x16, doesn't matter... you can even get PCI to PCIe adapters, unless you are running a 5970 or 6990 (dual gpu), in which case you only need 2 slots.

Linux (currently 8 GPU max):
repeat windows but double).

722  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What happens if this hardware crunch keeps going? on: May 26, 2011, 01:11:31 AM
The miners are responding to the rise in the market price of Bitcoin.  If the price stalls, so will the rise in difficulty.  If the price falls, the difficulty will slowly drop off to meet it.  Changes in difficulty tend to follow changes in price with a 6 week lag.

Check this out:  http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=7427.0

It seems as though the price per BTC in USD tends to follow the difficulty with an upward trend...  Granted, the most recent difficulty changes (ie, past 30 days) have been pretty steep, the price seems to have a higher rate of trend than the difficulty in these peak times, so I'll mine until the cost outweighs the benefits, or the value of the hardware changes.

Any chance of getting a kernel optimized for the 6xxx series?

+1 !!

I'd rather get a PCIe splitter...

Does this exist??

725  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Win 7 Pro x64 & Radeon 5850's Not a good mix? on: May 24, 2011, 10:44:33 PM
Alright, I figured it out.  The problem stems from the fact that I was trying to do the setup/configuration through a terminal server window, which apparently strips out the actual video drivers.  Of course, now I need to figure out how to manage the box without having to stick a keyboard, mouse and monitor on it.  I thought going to the 'console' through RDP would work, but I guess not.  Also tried VNC with no luck.  I had to be on the machine with a monitor to do all the config.

What do you guys that have multiple rigs do to monitor/manage your machines?  You hook a monitor up to every one, or is there some software out there that I can use to connect once in a while and check in?

+1 if you can find an answer!  I'd love to be able to tweak without connections to the monitor... 3 BTC bounty paid by me for a viable solution!

They do work, and you can find them on ebay for 20$.. Btw, I got 10Mhash less with the adapter but some MoBos can adjust the lag..

Thanks!  What do you mean by adjusting the lag?  BIOS settings?

727  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: GPU Problem? on: May 24, 2011, 10:36:37 PM
Your temps for the 57** card is too high.  The VRM temps are probably at 120 which means it's throttling the card to prevent overheating.

I saw someone posting about this a while back, and was unsure if someone has had luck with this...

Anyone gotten these to work in Windows/Linux?  What card are you using?

Thanks for your feedback.

729  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: Will write papers for bitcoins on: May 24, 2011, 05:20:34 PM
I did this in college quite a bit and frankly have a little spare time on my hands.  I was a writing tutor for years in college and used to be able to reliably turn out a ten page paper a night.  Made for good beer money.  This seems like a great way to get back into it and bitcoins are a perfect medium to protect both me and the person buying the paper.

Let me know if you need a paper done for high school, college, or whatever else you have.  I am thinking 1 bitcoin per page.  I will also stand by the quality of my work, if you don't receive a B or better I will refund half of your bitcoins.  If you fail the paper I will find your teacher and punch him/her in the babymaker for being an idiot.

I will try to write any and all topics that come my way, and should be able to piece together the information needed to write just about any paper you need.  However, if I encounter a topic overly technical or incredibly obscure I will of course just let you know that I am unable to write it.

If you are interested let me know and we can discuss the paper and the terms of payment over email.

Know any philosophy?

733  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Monitor your mining with Cacti! on: May 18, 2011, 11:09:31 PM
Use this link: http://docs.cacti.net/manual:088:3a_advanced_topics.1_data_input_methods#data_input_methods
from Cacti documentation to help you to do this:

1. Place the above mentioned script into cacti installation scripts folder .. name it deepbit_hashrate.php, test it if it dumps the rate
2. Create Data Input Method attached to this script (input this: /usr/bin/php <path_cacti>/scripts/deepbit_hashrate.php)
3. Create Data Template using the given Data Input Method, use GAUGE for hashrate, set range from 0 to 1000 or higher if you need
4. Create a Graph Template and add the Data Template as AREA graph type and also as GPRINT type of LAST VALUE
5. Go to Devices and add the Graph Template to your localhost graphs
6. Click on the link at the top to Create Graphs, check the box of graph and click Create
7. After a 5-minute poll interval, check in Graphs tab if the graph shows
8. Go to Graph Templates and fine-tune the template, add AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, etc.

Seems awkward at first, but thats the way Cacti is designed.

Any way you can export your template?  I seem to be having issues...

Seems cool. How do we replicate what you're seeing? Cheesy

Yes.  Please do tell.  I have Cacti installed just fine, but need to know what data to link to and what graph to work with... Please let me know what you're doing to get the Deepbit hasrate graph working.  Thank you!  (+tip)

I've managed to get 820 MH/s out of it now, so I'm going to hold on to it... I apologize for any inconvenience,  and with a couple more cards added to my rig, I may end up selling, but for now, I'm going to keep it.

It's Diamond Brand. I just bought it brand new 5/13/11.

My friend mined with it in his computer for <1 day. I'm still setting up the computer that I was going to use to mine with it.

Where might I be shipping?  e-mail me.

I have a 5970 I could trade with you for the 6990. The difference in price is only $100USD so I'm not sure how we can make this work with the shipping cost but make me an offer.

That's about exactly what I'm looking for.... What's the story on the 5970?  Used?  Been mining?  Warranty?  manufacturer?  I'm in 95010 US for shipping.

738  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: CentOS 5.5 Mining Guide for ATI/poclbm on: May 17, 2011, 09:23:53 PM
So I've had a text file I've been using when setting up new miners under CentOS 5.5, and I figured I'd share it with the community.  Everyone seems to be using Ubuntu, which is great, but I've only run into problems when trying to get everything configured in Ubuntu.  For me, CentOS has been much easier than Ubuntu, so here goes:

First off, when I install CentOS I choose only the Server GUI package group which I then customize by clicking the Customize Now radio button.  I then deselect everything under the Servers group, and make sure I select Development Libraries and Development Tools (or something like that).  This guide starts off after logging into the system after a fresh install.

Install ATI Drivers:
wget http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/ati-driver-installer-11-4-x86.x86_64.run
sh ati-driver-installer-11-4-x86.x86_64.run
<go through the install process>
aticonfig --adapter=all --initial --force

cd AMD-APP-SDK-v2.4-lnx64
cp lib/x86_64/* /lib64/
cp icd-registration.tgz /
cd /

Clone latest poclbm
git clone git://github.com/m0mchil/poclbm.git
-or-
git clone https://github.com/m0mchil/poclbm.git

REBOOT
reboot

TA DA!  After you reboot, you should be able to run poclbm and start mining!  Please let me know if there's anything I can change here to improve this guide, or if anyone has any problems when using this.  Using this method I'm currently able to mine at 375 Mh/s on a 5870 clocked @ 900 MHz.

+1 for a linux guide!!! Makes it easier on us M$ people.  Thanks!!
