741  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: How to check AMD Stream SDK version? on: January 11, 2012, 09:13:05 AM
Just unrar that to your C drive...

Not that I don't trust you, but I don't think anyone in their right mind should follow advice suggesting downloading random code from random places and executing it Shocked

Come closer, little one, I have candy for you...  Grin
742  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I installed the miner and activate but never mined anything? on: January 11, 2012, 09:04:29 AM
Miners are covered here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=42.0

If you wish to join a mining pool (which I think you do, even if you don't realize it just yet), choose one from the top 10 pools described in this section: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=41.0

I suggest you get acquainted with BitMinter (https://bitminter.com/). It's a very decent pool and they offer a user-friendly miner you can run directly from the browser.
Following this advice will allow you to actually do some mining while you get up to speed on what's what in Bitcoin universe.

I've deducted that you probably aren't too technical from the absence of any information in your original post.
What hardware are you using? Which operating system? Which miner have you tried to run? There are plenty you know.

The Bitcoin Wiki https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Main_Page might be easier to read than the forums.

Make sure that you understand the difference between the Bitcoin client (a wallet for your bitcoins) and the actual miners (programs attempting to generate new bitcoins).
743  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: To overvolt or not to overvolt? on: January 10, 2012, 11:48:00 PM
Actually, it's UNDERVOLTING that some experienced miners are recommending.

It's not pure hash rate what counts (unless someone else is paying for your power) but the ratio of your hash rate to power consumption.
Lowered voltage might mean that you'll have to pull the clocks back as well but the power consumption will fall significantly faster than hash rate.

I don't mind the 0s a bit. I fixed them with greasemonkey :>
744  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Security issues in the console client plus use of recovery tools on: January 10, 2012, 11:24:25 PM
Burt, it's not the mistake that's bugging me, it's the tone of his post that drives me up the wall.

OP is astoundingly authoritative in his tone for someone not having actually tried this attack.
I request the title be changed to something less alarming.
We have non-techie users here too and I'd hate for them to get confused and going on a linking spree:

OMG, we're doomed: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=57244.0
The sky is falling, run! https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=57244.0
Bitcoin is broken!!!  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=57244.0
I told you Bitcoin wouldn't work. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=57244.0

OMG! is that why it's called Diablo miner???
Shhh, don't tell anyone Smiley
745  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Security issues in the console client plus use of recovery tools on: January 10, 2012, 11:10:47 PM
Bitcoin console client and storage needs fixing...

Haven't you misteken wallet.dat for a Diablo II savegame??

This is sooo NOT how Bitcoin works, it's not even funny.
The network will laugh at your attempt at duping.
The client will show the correct values when it receives the next block. I imagine it'll be chuckling as well.

You really should get yourself up to speed on Bitcoin internals before spreading FUD with such astounding authority.
746  Other / Meta / Re: Feature request: bitcent tipping on: January 10, 2012, 10:32:33 PM
The tip is supposed to be minimal, instant, from a specific forum user and for a specific forum post - only then it acts like the right incentive to improve quality of the content.
And it's supposed to be one-click only.

Couldn't agree more.

Should bitcoin get massive traction during CES there will be an influx of newbies here.
Very few will have enough netiquette and courage to actually delve through the countless posts in order to get up to speed. Most of them will require immediate support.
An easy-to-use link might just be the way for us to get compensated for the effort.
747  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Solidcoin DMCA takedown on: January 10, 2012, 10:17:41 PM
I'm late on the subject but oh my, this almost too rich XD

If only the gestapo trusted nodes could get the same special treatment...
What boggles my mind is, there apparently still are people mining ScamCoin.
748  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Driver lockup on: January 10, 2012, 05:35:43 PM
No problem.
I wish I'd gotten a bitcoin every time I made an ass of myself Smiley
749  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Driver lockup on: January 09, 2012, 11:04:34 PM
Still crashes with just one GFX directly on the mobo :'-(

Ok, let's do something about that, shall we?
Do you mean that you tested the mobo four times, each time with a different GPU?

Do you think you could download a ready-to-use mining Linux distro, such as LinuxCoin(1) and try mining using that? LinuxCoin can be installed on any sufficiently big flash drive and won't modify your main OS.
The distro comes pre-equipped with amd drivers, sdk, and a miners.
Test your stability using that.

If the rig crashes again, we'll take a look at CPU and memory stability.

750  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: blockchain server and clients connection? on: January 09, 2012, 09:50:53 AM
I know that BTC use the same technique like torrent but it doesn't mean that I know technical side of torrents or BTC. so, I know that people get torrent file (movie file) from PC of other users of torrent or better said from those who have that movie file. but I didn't know if connection between torrent clients is made simply through home internet connection or through IRC.
as you said, client must discover other clients, therefore I thought all BTC clients use some channel of some IRC to discover other BTC clients and consequently ISP can block that IRC and block BTC connection. I just read this morning that some torrents make DHT trackers instead of http trackers.
so, I am agreed that you need some documentation for newbies about connections between BTC clients and how they discover each others and how they get blockchain, and try to avoid to use professional words which are not known to the people who are not programmers.

Ok, the issue here is that before you're going to invest your money and effort in a unique high-tech project you'd best do your homework first.
Not understanding the technology you're using is apt to get you in trouble.

The bitcoin wiki is should be sufficiently non-technical for a reasonably tech-savvy user to understand: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Main_Page.

For your own sake, make sure you have familiarized yourself with wallet file, know its location, and how to protect it from theft (encryption) and data loss (backups of the ENCRYPTED wallet).

Never use bitcoin on a non-trusted machine (either a machine that you don't own, a machine not protected by current antivirus software, or a machine known to have been infected).
Bitcoin is to be treated just as seriously as internet banking. No encryption can help if there is malware on your machine reading your key-strokes.

Searching the forum (especially the Newbies subforum), you will see that all your questions had already been asked (and answered) time and time again.
751  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER miner overclock monitor fanspeed RPC in C linux/windows/osx 2.1.2 on: January 09, 2012, 09:31:35 AM
I'm Still having some issues with Windows 7 & cgminer. regarding Memory clock. i can adjust core clock fine within cgminer.. or by using the .bat file. i cant adjust the mem clock in cgminer. or with the .bat file

Which card is giving you trouble Mash?
My Asus EAH6950 1GB DCII cards will only allow up to 125 MHz lower for the memory core than GPU. You try downclocking more and the card will just ignore it.
752  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [349 GH] Eligius pool: ~0Fee SMPPS, no reg, RollNtime, hop OK, BTC+NMC merged! on: January 09, 2012, 01:46:47 AM

How many real $$ has Luke mined in I0coin, ixCoin, and CLC, using Eligius pool power, that has not been shared back to
the Eligius Pool members ?

Is this in any way relevant? Those coins are nearly worthless and there is a much bigger matter at hand.

By running a pool he governs his miner's resources (hash power). Allegedly, he also uses these resources for purposes other than mining Bitcoins which he wasn't entitled to do.

An analogy is you desperately need one:
You have access to your employer's computer in your work. You are allowed to use the machine's resources as far as this usage is work-related.
If you are caught playing Quake on that machine not only can you get fired but also be sued for unauthorized use of your employer's resources.

I'm going out of my way here to warn Luke that this is not necessarily child's play. He is a very good coder and I wouldn't like him to get in serious trouble.

I've said all I have to say, this is the last time I'm joining this particular discussion.
753  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [349 GH] Eligius pool: ~0Fee SMPPS, no reg, RollNtime, hop OK, BTC+NMC merged! on: January 09, 2012, 01:15:42 AM
...I can't quite agree with him, that's a blatant breach of agreement...

Incorrect. There was and still is no agreement to provide Coiledcoins. There is no agreement promising not to use the completed POWs for other calculations besides those promised to the users.

By HIM, I meant Luke.   I'll try to be very precise here:

EDIT:: I edited a part of this post out as I felt it was out of place. Not wrong or incorrect, just in the wrong place here as this is a technical forum.
EDIT:: Legal discussion does not belong here and is certainly not had with individuals trying to raise a row.
754  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [349 GH] Eligius pool: ~0Fee SMPPS, no reg, RollNtime, hop OK, BTC+NMC merged! on: January 08, 2012, 11:19:28 PM
...he genuinely does seem to believe that whatever other things he does with his pool are irrelevant to miners so long as they get their Bitcoins.

I can't quite agree with him (EDIT:: Luke), that's a blatant breach of agreement.
Miners mine at Eligius with the assumption that their hashing power is being exclusively used for Bitcoin (and since merged mining was introduced, Namecoin) mining.
Any other usage of the hashing power is simply unauthorized.

Please think the situation over once more Luke.
755  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: GPU temp on: January 08, 2012, 10:47:41 PM
Have fun with the card then!
Give cgminer a try. One program will take care of the mining, overclocking, and temperature control.
756  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Driver lockup on: January 08, 2012, 10:45:03 PM
What you can do quite easily, is run a program which will read the temperatures and voltages, for example SIW (System Information for Windows)(1)
That'll give you some idea as to what's going on under the hood.
The M1000, being a group-regulated design, wasn't the most stable of power supplies. I don't say it's bad, just imperfect.

The +12 volt rails should never drop under 11.4 or go over 12.6 volts.
5 volt rail should always be between 4.75 and 5.25 volts.
3.3 volt rail should be between 3.13 and 3.46 volts.
Power noise and ripple can't be measured without a oscilloscope.

If you see nothing out of spec, please try temporarily removing all the extenders and run a GPU plugged directly into the mobo.
If the rig hangs again, change that card to another.
Report whether or not you can get this thing stable.
Should the rig stabilize, add as many cards as you can without using the extenders. If everything still works fine, re-apply the extenders.

It's a lot of work but it's bloody damned hard to troubleshoot a (suspected) hardware issue remotely.
Best of luck!

757  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Driver lockup on: January 08, 2012, 10:10:59 PM
You should have thrown Windows out, not the plugs.

Drivers don't "just crash" out of the blue with such amazing regularity.
Let's face the facts, at least one of your cards isn't stable for whatever reason.
What PSU is running that rig of yours? Accurate model and wattage would be most welcome.

Try temporarily removing one card and see whether the problem persists.
758  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: GPU temp on: January 08, 2012, 09:40:56 PM
At 105 °C you're not mining, you're slowly frying that card.
Nobody in their right mind runs their GPUs at those temperatures.
Believe me, when the GPU-mining craze started some miners did. Since then they either buried or RMAd their dead cards and learned the lesson.

Anything over 100 °C for an extended period of time is a failure waiting to happen.
GPU chipsets are done much the same way as the CPUs. The silicon core can't take more than 100-110 °C for long periods and will degrade fast.

Individuals quite fond of their GPUs don't like going over 80 °C.

The 4670, as a lower mid-end model is simply not designed for usage as extreme as bitcoin mining hence the inadequate cooling.
What hash rate are you getting out of that poor-old thing BTW?
759  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: What is the pool with the best PPS rate? on: January 08, 2012, 07:28:21 PM
Can you tell me what its PPS rate is?

(I'm saying the following with all due respect of course)

Clearly, OP was looking for a PPS pool.
Triplemining isn't a PPS pool, therefore your answer was in the wrong domain.

You led him to believe that Triplemining is something it is not as is obvious from his question.

That's all I've got to say on this matter.
760  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [349 GH] Eligius pool: ~0Fee SMPPS, no reg, RollNtime, hop OK, BTC+NMC merged! on: January 08, 2012, 07:07:20 PM
That's what I get for not reading the whole file.
I stand corrected. And 0.4% faster.

BTW, that while(1) kinda bugs me. I've always preferred a macroed while(TRUE) instead.
