I paid cahs, since it was craigslist. Nobody deals in anything but cash, plus I've never had a problem before. Imagine my surprise when I stick it into my machine and NOTHING turns on. :/
Talked to the police, they basically laughed at me. Sad times. So nobody knows of any email bombers or anything like that?

Hey, Some idiot kid on craigslist sold me an ATI 5850 that was bricked and now won't return my phone calls. Yay $150 paperweight. I'm looking to exact a little revenge by making his cellphone largely unusable. I'd like to find a way to send his phone a text every 10 to 30 seconds or so continuously. Ideally, these would come from different sources over time so that he couldn't just block whatever email address / server / phone number was, but that's not necessarily a requirement. Not really sure what kind of bounty to put on a project like this, so uh...tell me what you can do and how much you're looking for? And of course, further ideas for revenge would be appreciated! ~~~~~ {edit: dacoinminster has come up with a great idea! Bitcoin bounty for recorded prank calls to the stupid scammer - title changed to reflect this} .1 btc bounty - That's $1.40! to anyone who prank calls this number 281-685-0510, records it, and shares it with us here in this thread. Scammer's name is Shawn Martin. Bonus bitcoins for hilarious content! Try to make it at an inconvenient time. He is in the Central Time Zone US (Chicago time zone) as a reference Caller suggestions: 1) Use a heavy accent, then accuse him of racism if he claims he can't understand you. 2) Tell him he won a big prize, then make him do something ridiculous to claim the prize. a. "TV Show: All you have to do to claim your $1M is dig a 6 ft deep hole in your parents' lawn before they notice!" b. "Radio Show: All you have to do to claim your trip to Tahiti is convince your parents you are gay." 3) Pretend you are an investigating a crime, and he is the suspect 4) Pretend you are an angry gay man jealous of his flirting with your partner 5) Offer $100 payment if he completes your survey, then ask lots of embarrassing questions 6) The old classic: claim that he called you. 7) If you are a girl, or know one who can pull this off: "Shawn, I'm calling from the doctor's office. I'm pregnant!" (For best results, have her talk in a hoarse whisper because she has laryngitis) 8 ) Extra points if you get him to divulge his address (where should we send the check?)
1 btc bonus bounty if you can figure out his address!

Oh yeah, that was from my email chain where I said he was stupid for trying to trademark bitcoin.
|
|
|
Looks like we got to him. Dear Sir,
Please be advised that, for strategic reasons, Magellan Capital's trademark (serial number 85353491) filed with the United States Patent & Trademark Office has been Expressly Abandoned, pursuant to statute, as of July 7, 2011 at 13:15 EDT.
Simultaneously therewith, my client has begun trademark registrations in those civil law countries, wherein, "first to use" status is not recognized as a defense to trademark registration. These civil law countries, which account for most of the world's population, and land mass, only recognize a "first to file" basis for trademark registration.
Moreover, calling me stupid is simply childish, and not a hallmark of thoughtful adult discourse. I have been called worse; most often from my adversaries, when I succeed on an important matter in a court of law. tl;dr version. He's giving up here in the US because of all the heat he got, but will STILL PURSUE THIS TRADEMARK IN OTHER COUNTRIES. I say we continue with the heat!

Does someone have 300 gigahashes / sec ? That's how much US West just lost. O.o Or did we bring down the electricity grid of a small city that had a lot of miners or something lol.

Hey y'all,
I'm having troubles setting up my second video card in Ubuntu. It constantly says "Verification Failed. Check Hardware" when I try to mine using the polcbm miner. First card has no problems whatsoever, but second one...not so much.
I'm just re-using my same polcbm structure from the first worker (which is working) except changing the last line to reflect the new worker name and password. Is there something else I should be changing?
|
|
|
You need to download new drivers for your video card. I bet you're getting a "no opencl devices found" message. That will go away when you download your new drivers.

The same way they shut down pokerstars and fulltiltpoker whenever they decided they wanted to (both of which were based in other countries). Seize the domain and put scary FBI warning signs up (like the one currently on http://bookmaker.com/ which they also did it to) warning people to stay away. Concentrated sites are easy to take down. Register the domain in Russia, Finland, Switzerland, Japan, or Cocos Islands -> Problem solved. Besides, pokerstars.com and fulltiltpoker.com work just fine at the moment, and the .net domains were never down to begin with & their site was fully operational the whole time. I follow the news. They're fine now because they struck deals with the US DoJ to do so. Listen, I love bitcoin as much as anyone else, but the fact of the matter is, it is not impossible to stop...or at least wound very severely.
|
|
|
Why you need that ? For me poclbm eats less then 1% CPU.
Not with opencl and multiple GPUs. With 2 GPUs and 2 workers for each (1 backup), I use 100% of my i5-2500k ALL THE TIME. If this works, that'd be AWESOME!

Bottom line, PRICE DOES NOT INCREASE BECAUSE DIFFICULTY INCREASES.
Suppose difficulty increased by 100x. According to your logic, prices would still not increase because difficulty does not affect price. Let's say Bob is a Bitcoin newcomer. He decides to mine to get them, but then difficulty increases by 100x. So instead, he decides to buy them because mining would be far less profitable. Other people have the same thinking as Bob, and decide to buy instead of mine. This drives up the price. Difficulty does therefore affect price. But see, in your example, the driving force for btc price increases is Bob, the bitcoin newcomer. NOT the difficulty increase. He wants bitcoins, driving the demand up, thus driving the price up. Not difficulty.
|
|
|
Because that's not the way bitcoin works.
Difficulty may increase after a price jump. Why? Because now it's even more profitable to mine, so more people bring more machines online, and so difficulty jumps.
But think about the opposite situation: Why would price jump after a difficulty jump? The price of btc does not follow how hard it is to generate them. The people buying bitcoins don't *care* how much hashing was required to create them. Why would they?
Bottom line, PRICE DOES NOT INCREASE BECAUSE DIFFICULTY INCREASES.

There is obviously a reason for this. IMO people who went in big ordering 20 5870's or 10 6990's or whatever this late in the game are going to lose the most. The bitcoin was backed on nothing more than trust. Since the gov't caught wind of it, people are starting to lose trust. The value will just go down from here. There may be one last spike and that's it. The problem however is not with bitcoin, the gov't can't shut it down no matter how hard they try. What they can and will do instead is go after the exchangers. Mtgox will be the first to get hit. It's not if, it's just a matter of time. Look at what happened to e-gold. For those of you that haven't been keeping up with the latest, I suggest you visit the economics subforum immediately and get the facts. Since most people are driven by greed and are using bitcoin as nothing more than a cash cow, this is the beginning of the end. Get out while you can and make sure you have nothing in any of the exchanges within a few weeks from now. Mtgox WILL get hit and when they do, you want to make sure you don't have USD or bitcoins sitting in there because if you do, you are going to lose every last cent of it.
How are "they" going to go after an exchange that is based in Japan and has currency accounts around the world? The same way they shut down pokerstars and fulltiltpoker whenever they decided they wanted to (both of which were based in other countries). Seize the domain and put scary FBI warning signs up (like the one currently on http://bookmaker.com/ which they also did it to) warning people to stay away. Concentrated sites are easy to take down.

I want to say no, but the reasoning that "price swings are too scary" does not apply to me. How do I vote?

I don't whant to ask stupid questions, but....
the 5870 usually has a clock/memory speed of 1200/850. Do you realy slow down the memory to like 300 MHz? And you also slow down the clock to like 900 MHz?
I'm waiting for my own 5870 and I thought it be good to slow down memory to reduce heat production and therefore tune up the clock?! The memory is not so important, right?
Those numbers are not true. Stock, they come at a core clock of 850 and memory of 1000

Allrighty, I'll be the guinea pig lol. 1 btc sent. I'll let everyone know if I get my windows 7 key or not. OP is legit. I got not 1, but 2 windows keys from him and he was great to work with. Great communication, and even helped me out when I accidentally asked for the wrong windows version key. Windows 7 key for 1 btc. Perfect! Highly recommended.
