THE BIRD

lol, where the heck have you been? We fixed your wallet, got pools (http://birdcoinpool(dot)tk) and a block explorer going, and started negotiations with some exchanges while you were MIA! We had your back and didn't let it die off while you were gone so shoot us a little bit of that premine  Tongue

Anyway, whatever you have planned for a new logo, give support@xnigma.com an email and show him and let him know what's planned, I exchanged a few emails with him earlier, linked him to the source code I modded and he's got a wallet running but was wanting to see a new logo, something he can show on the site that'll catch the eye. I was thinking something like an "angry bird"-ish face (but discernably different so as not to create copyright issues) on a shiny coin would be kind of cool, but I'm no artist and no good with Photoshop. What do you guys think??

Devs, any status update on the tipbot for reddit? will you be posting it there when it's ready? thanks!

We will, yes. We have registered /r/octocointip and /u/octocointip - we will begin getting these sections updated this evening and get the Tip Bot linked up live.

We definitely want to get it out tonight along with all of the other items which have already been completed.

You guys are doing a great job. Keep up the good work! My pool is doing superb as well. We're not huge, about 13% of the network, but we're mining at a decent enough rate. I got the block explorer integrated into our system, seems your DNS has propagated already. I'm happy to say we're not experiencing any more payout issues and we're chugging along happily. This coming Saturday we're doing a 25% giveaway, so don't forget to mine and receive a payout to be entered in the drawing! I don't have an exact estimate for the prize yet but it'll definitely be enough to buy beer or pizza!

Ugh, I can't think about beer or pizza right now.. I just had a bad batch of nachos.

The Xnigma admin is going to add Birdcoin, but he wants someone to make up a better logo for him to show on his site. Not the parrot or the default one lol. Let's make this happen, guys!

Also, for the first weekly giveaway at my pool, I'm estimating 250k Birdcoin to give away. Don't miss out! Just be an active miner anytime this week and trigger an automatic or manual payout and you'll be entered into the drawing.

just put some hash on this    bird bird bird

Good, don't let this one die. Difficulty is still extremely low, you could solomine blocks with 30kh. If we can get into an exchange, even at 1 satoshi, you can make a nice little profit off this one.
786  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [888] [SCRYPT] OctoCoin ◦ The Power of Eight ◦ Don't Blink on: March 10, 2014, 04:08:34 PM
Due to the initial DDoS attacks on the nodes and at FusionHash, there were an abundance of early blocks that became orphans after shares had already been paid out (it essentially became an unintentional ponzi scheme.) Many early miners at FusionHash were paid out on blocks that were actually orphans resulting in other early miners not being paid out on their shares because of insufficient coins.

All shares at FusionHash are logged and accounted for, but a number of people who have shares in the first 400 blocks did not receive their full payouts. Instead of continuing the "ponzi scheme" they simply skipped over the affected shares to resume normal operation and decided to address the issue once they had mined enough OctoCoins and received enough fees to pay everybody their full share.

As soon as we discovered what had happened, we sent FusionHash about 25% of our 0.8% OctoCoin premine to help them cover all owed shares. There is no reason why they should have to pay out using their own OctoCoins that they have earned/mined when the issue was just as much our fault as theirs.

FusionHash has sent an Email out to a number of affected miners at their pool. If you believe you have been shorted and did not receive this Email, please contact:

admin@fusionhash.com

Include your FusionHash user name, registered Email address, and your OctoCoin address. If you are owed coins, they will investigate and you will be paid (we will work with them to make sure of it.) Keep in mind they have over 3000 accounts registered at their OctoCoin pool as of this post so please don't randomly message them hoping to score a few bonus coins if you don't truly suspect a discrepancy - it is a time consuming process and their time is better spent building out their new products and services. They have assured everyone that not a single share is missing in the database. Beyond the early issues, everything has been running great over there for over 36 hours now - the issue primarily just affected some early miners.

I'll leave it up to FusionHash to issue a formal apology/etc but rest-assured everybody will be paid. Thanks for supporting OctoCoin guys - it only gets better from here.

This is what makes for a good release. Active developer interaction with the community as well as transparency makes a huge difference, and helps build confidence in the coin. The community can, at times, be a somewhat skittish and panicky entity, quick to judge, give up, or scream "SCAM!" This launch and all the interaction with the devs has done me some good, as I'm normally not very socially outgoing, and usually remain behind the scenes.

It makes all the difference in the world with the developers staying around and addressing issues to the community. Take the launch of BirdCoin, where the dev ninja launched, left us a broken wallet which we had to fix ourselves, and never came back, now the community is stuck modifying the wallet, making our own block explorer, petitioning exchanges, etc. I was asked to take over the project but as I've stated before I may be a decent sysadmin, but no good with C!

Anyway, here's to the developers, you have my gratitude for the graciousness and patience you've displayed.

I'm going to bed, if anything gets stuck, everyone will get paid in the morning. Tomorrow I'm going to work on the problem some more. Investigating this has left me with lots of questions. Either there's some glitch with the wallet or MPOS not playing nicely, or it could even be that orphaned block causing issues as well, as the last error's payout log mentioned insufficient funds, though I'm unsure if we really ARE a block behind. Something is still a tad funny but everyone's getting paid one way or another. Definitely had my plate full! Good night Smiley

I had a look at your pool and noticed you are crediting blocks after 60 confirms.

If you look at the source code for 888 you will notice that coins are not credited to your client until 120 confirms.

That could be your problem if you are having insufficient funds problems.

Yes, I went ahead and changed it back to 120 when I got up. I was under the impression that mined blocks confirmed quick like transactions but apparently I derp'd on that one. After we build up a good positive balance I may turn them back down as a convenience for the miners but also want to avoid more errors. After investigating my payout errors, some were for insufficient funds, others for what I believe to be connectivity issues, but looked very similar in the logs so I got pretty confused for a while.

I'll admit my programming skills are not proportional to my skills as a technician and sysadmin, so understanding what I see in source code usually involves me asking lots of questions, at least with C. Soon I'm going to get back into some small-time development, though. I was a Hypercard nut back in the Classic Mac days and RunRev has an incredible platform called LiveCode, which is basically a powerful, cross-platform incarnation of Hypercard. I have lots of time on my hands so I'm considering reviving an old project as well as possibly throwing together some pool sysadmin tools for Android.

I have been investigating much deeper into the errors where some transactions were not paid out, which causes pool cronjobs to stop. It involves the RPC call not returning a 200 OK along with a TXID, and there are a few coins including DogeCoin whose wallets are apparently susceptible to this. It seems that OctoCoin may indeed have this problem as well. According to the MPOS developer, when this problem occurs it's a difficult situation to handle correctly for the pool software because of the risk of double payouts. This situation is described in depth at https://github.com/MPOS/php-mpos/issues/1593

We are not processing a large quantity of payouts at any given time yet are still sporadically experiencing this error. If any developers have any insight into this it'd be great to hear it.

Rest assured, though, that I have a red flag for any of these errant transactions and they will be manually sent as soon as I see them, though any error from now on will shut payouts off and you will see the "Investigating issues in the backend" message until I restart the payout cron. If this happens while I'm in bed or away, please do not worry, I will fix it ASAP, and in the meantime your shares and coins are quite safe.

FusionHash has had a steady >51% hashrate/network since the launch.  This can't be a good thing. I've seen ethical pools freeze new registrations and actively try to keep the network healthy, no such efforts here.

A good reason to mine at my pool. That and a chance at the 25% prize next Saturday!
791  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [888] [SCRYPT] OctoCoin ◦ The Power of Eight ◦ Don't Blink on: March 10, 2014, 03:12:07 AM
any exchange addition is good for the price at this point. its not a fight, i would just like to see octocoin reach more exchanges and hear some updates from the developers about what the coin is supposed to be used for.

Lameton I agree I just see a lot of ppl wanting more exchanges but the ones currently trading the coins are not seeing a lot of volume buy or sell.  Is everyone hording the coins?

I would think yes most are hoarding. Most probably will until it get's on more well-known exchanges. And I don't think most want to sell so low while the 888 block reward is here. I would think it will naturally pick up after the first 8 days.

Yes, I agree, definitely going to pick up after the 8 days is up, providing it keeps people's interest. The net hashrate has really died off, I'm hoping it picks up overnight with people sleep mining.

On another note, we didn't get much in the way of tech specs. Does anyone know officially how many confirms this coin needs?

While the overall network hashrate is down quite a bit (and difficulty too, good time to jump in), my pool has settled down to 55MH. Now's the best time to come and enjoy the 0.5% mining fee while securing your place in the 25% drawing. The more we mine, the bigger the prize! octocoinpool.tk

Is there a blockchain explorer?

I think at some point tonight there'll be one. As soon as it's up I will be adding that into my pool.

octocoinpool (dot) tk* was down, seems to be coming back online

They just worked on the pool a few minutes  Smiley

Yeah, we moved the wallet to a different server connected via VPN, to avoid any more "payout abyss" issues. All botched payouts have been manually corrected and I haven't seen any more issues since we changed things around. So, the pool at http://octocoinpool (dot) tk is running awesomely now.

I would have announced this earlier but I ended up very late for work because of DST change, lol.

You sir, are a really good pool operator, and as soon as I will have my ne rig, be sure i'll be donating (:

That is very much appreciated. I'm really trying to run the best pool I possibly can! It's definitely not easy doing it by yourself but I will always do my best to make sure everyone gets what they earned. I really appreciate any donations I could get right now. I've got one eye on the server at all times at the moment, as I'm trying to make up for an orphaned block that paid out anyway.

Anyone else reading that mines my pool, if you would just be so kind as to not all withdraw at once, I would appreciate it. It's slow going at 0.5% fee making up for the orphaned block we paid out. I don't think it's urgent enough to shut off withdrawals completely but if the wallet is drained to the limit it will shut off automatically until the situation corrects itself. I am grateful for everyone who was patient and stuck with the pool and gave me a chance to fix the missing payout situation. The craziness and DDoS situation has pretty much died off so I'm hoping we will have smooth sailing and many blocks for our future!

sent octocoinpool (dot) tk pool operator a message about gaps about an hour long where coins do not show up even though dashboard registers me mining.  Not sure if it's faster to contact here or through pool's email.

Either way PM me here or use the contact form.. If I do not respond right away I am either at work or sleeping, but responding is my FIRST priority when I check my email box! Your payout should be in your wallet.

Whoever is taking over this project needs to speak with support@xnigma.com about getting on the exchange. It's possible he'll add it if we have enough support and the dev on board.

All missing payouts should NOW be accounted for, please check your wallets guys! Sorry about this. We're definitely going to put some measures in place tomorrow. In the meantime, if ANYONE has any more trouble with stuck transactions or anything do not hesitate to contact me. Also, sorry about the contact form, I'm working on a fix on that. It was working fine earlier...

Thanks alot whoever you are for the block explorer! It has been added into the pool and works GREAT.

Woohoo, I'm glad there's finally interest! I'm not much of a coder, more of a sysadmin and technician, but I'll be glad to help in any way possible. Also for getting on an exchange, I would suggest spamming support@xnigma.com with emails and visiting xnigma.com (maybe) and see if they're interested in adding. Hey, they added OctoCoin I believe without any persuasion.  As far as premines go, yeah, that's kinda a pain in the arse, but we've seen worse survive. Please support our pool at http://birdcoinpool (dot) tk by mining with us and donating to the pool!
