i find it to be a positive thing because it did show that bitcoin doesn't need silk road to be valuable. it also shows that the fbi can shut down one site and stop very little. the most positive thing in my opinion tho is i have some new entertainment looking at blockchain.info

i would think a more devious tactic would be if the us government forked the bitcoin client to create an alt coin we'll call them "safetycoins" since the us government is very fond of replacing the word "Oppression" with the word "Safety". So then they would premine the whole safetycoin blockchain and give them away as part of a stimulus plan. Then you could exchange each safety coin with fiat at your local post office for a rate of like 500 bucks each. They could even put a nice backdoor into the algorhtym that tracks the ip of every wallet. The general public would just see free money and be all over it.

ASICs shouldn't bother anyone. A rig with 4 7970 GPUs can only get barely 4 GH/s and costs over $3000. Now, for $649, you can get a rig that gives you 4.5 GH/s. ASICs are so much cheaper, with the tradeoff of having only one purpose. Also, imagine how mad CPU miners were when GPU miners came out. Must have been infuriating. Advancement of technology will always happen. ASICs just happen to be the next step past GPUs. There will be something to pass up ASICs in something like 10 years. Just watch.
Until I can order an ASIC on Amazon and have it delivered the next day and for less money than the same hashpower in a GPU, that is purely hypothetical. http://www.amazon.com/ASICMiner-Block-Erupter-USB-Sapphire/dp/B00CUJT7TO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379299441&sr=8-1&keywords=block+eruptor

here in the states police agencies routinely use cs gas to disperse protesters. which i do believe are chemical weapons. its not as deadly as sarin gas, but it does kill people. I don't understand where launching cruise missiles at a country is the moral high ground. The big picture is that it could spark an attack on israel which will escalate the violence thoughout the entire world as everyone chooses sides. It could be an archduke ferdinand moment. but mainly my concern is that i can't even drive to the grocery store without the government taking my picture 6 times. Or i can't fly on an airplane without letting a stranger look at my scrotum. I feel for the syrian people, because both sides seem like dr. evil fighting dr. doom. But war begets war regardless and i can't support it in any fashion.

this really comes down to what you wanna get out of bitcoins. if you are in it for purely profit/speculation, then it would be more profitable to buy the bitcoins imo. Of course im of the belief that bitcoins will continue to rise in value over the next few years. But, if you are just getting into bitcoins and love the concept and all that good stuff, go ahead and buy the miner. Mining bitcoins is fun! and at least in my experience with asics (block eruptors) asic mining is really really easy compared to gpu mining. Its really satisfying to check your pool and getting excited when the difficulty dips (not that that has happened lately, but when it does its exciting!) also, if you believe that btc will get more valuable over time and you feel you will still be mining in say 2 years from now, then in the big picture you will make money. Also litecoins are cool and wouldn't be a bad idea to buy a small amount for speculation. im not familiar with the company you are talking about, before you lay down any money i'd recommend vetting them a bit, search this forum for threads about them. Im still waiting on my bfl jalapeno, and by the time i get it it will be very little hashing power. thank god i didn't trust bfl and spent the bulk of my mining investment money on gpu's which have more than paid for themselves. Even asic mining is work though, you will have to watch them a good bit for things like your software crashing, internet dropping, and occasionally restarting them. its not too bad really, and a cakewalk compared to the tempermental bitches known as radeon gpus.

growing up in the 70's and 80's i find it mind blowing that im actually rooting for the russian government as opposed to our own. And to a KGB man no less. If you had told me that in 1985 i'd have said you were crazy. but kudos to russia for (so far) not giving snowden to our overlords and trying to be the voice of reason when it comes to syria and potentially starting world war 3. Fortunately more and more people in the us are realizing that we live in an oppresive police state and that regardless of political party in power we have no say in our politics. whether anything will change i suppose only time will tell. For sure bitcoins could help us make the change back to an accountable/responsible government. Whether that happens or they just turn into one more thing for them to tax is yet to be seen.

i would be all about the treyzor for .25 btc or less. and i agree, holy crap what is up with preorders and bitcoin? I guess for startup companies any way to accumulate capital is ok, but for me as a consumer im really sick of laying money down for a product that i may get in 1 month or 1 year or possibly never. I do see how the treyzor or something like it that would allow users to store/xfer bitcoins hassle free could really help in mainstream adoption. At this point tho i have an encrypted cold wallet in a friends gun safe and another copy buried in an undisclosed location. Thats security enough for me.

Are you really that naive?
Do you underestimate the brightest minds in the world? Do you believe that the minds in the NSA are somehow brighter than those outside of it? So what evidence do you have that the brightest minds in the world are not in these government agencies? A friend of mine's son has studied maths at Cambridge in the UK, he is now doing a PHD over in the US at MIT. She had her son's friend stay with her over the holiday, and told me that this girl was also studying for a PHD also. This girl is apparently ridiculously intelligent, to the point of being autistic, she has no social skills. She has already been approached by GCHQ and has done a summer placement there. She has been offered a place after completing her PHD. That's what happens in the real world, these ultra bright kids will be snapped up by places like GCHQ and NSA before they are 21, but, this forum is just like a hollow box where you all like to shout about the positives of bitcoin without ever considering the real world, so I guess none of this matters. The real world has no relevance on the internet.

Now that I've bought land I definitely plan to sell food for bitcoin. My farm will focus on high-quality, free range pork and chicken. When the food forest crops come in we'll have many kinds of berries and fruits, and eventually nuts.
I need something that I can ship out to internet customers. Any ideas?
