81  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Mt.Gox has a Bitcoin withdrawl limit? (Rant at operators of Mt.Gox) on: June 07, 2011, 01:21:33 PM
I've just tried to move Bitcoins from Mt.Gox.

Your request was over the maximum authorized for your level of authorization for this time period. Please contact aml@mtgox.com to increase your limit. XX.XX withdrawn.

What the hell?  All that I've been saying about Bitcoins turns out to be untrue.  There are still gatekeepers imposing arbitrary limits on what I can and can't do with my own money.

If I want to move $5000, say, from the US to GBP in the UK.  I can use a bank.  That takes at least a day.  Should I want to do the same using Bitcoins, I've been boasting that I can beat the banking system no problem.  An hour at most.

Turns out that's rubbish.  I've got to wait (I presume) another day now to move those coins.  A day in Bitcoin time is glacial.  In that time, the GBP price could have changed dramatically.

Tell me, what is the point of Bitcoins if it isn't to get away from this nonsense?

Tell me, how am I going to preserve my anonymity if I have to email someone to get my "authorisation level" increased.

Tell me, why do I need authorisation to access MY MONEY.

Tell me, how was I meant to know about this before I attempted it?  There were no warnings.

What a surprise that a business is trying to follow the laws so they can continue to make money instead of get ass-pounded for it.

Bitcoin is not a license to violate laws, sorry.

If you move wealth from a non-productive means to a more productive means, you are increasing wealth.  When people speculate, they are making resources available toward more productive (at least in their opinion) means, and removing it from less productive means.
It's still overhead. Eliminating the need for overhead will always be beneficial for the system as a whole.

How is it overhead?

Yes if there was perfect knowledge, speculation wouldn't be valuable (nor profitable).  But knowledge is not perfect.
83  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: It's already somehow inconvenient to use BTC as a currency on: June 06, 2011, 01:08:02 AM
Why does anyone need to change the source?  Just remove the fee from your client.  Problem solved.  Mandatory fee is only for super small transactions.
84  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: how long to transfer coins directly from the client? on: June 06, 2011, 12:54:40 AM
thread title pretty much says it, say I've had someone send me coins directly to my wallet, how long will it take to process?

This is the first time I've ever dealt with this and I had someone send me a few coins a few hours ago, am I just being impatient or is something wrong?

A couple of hours is pretty long.
85  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ron Paul Money Bomb - Bitcoin donations? on: June 05, 2011, 11:13:32 PM
I'd rather not support Ron Paul. While I agree with a few of his ideas, he is mostly a nutcase.

+1,000,000

All you ron paul fanatics in this forum really make me think bitcoin is doomed to fail.

Ron Paul is an Americunt's "green party" as we have here in Canada. They are used to remove anybody that doesn't fit nicely into "republican" or "democrat" molds from the polls. They will never win, and anybody who votes for them is wasting a vote.

But why would voting for ANYONE not be a waste of a vote?  It's not like your vote will matter there either.  Voting is a waste of time.
86  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ron Paul Money Bomb - Bitcoin donations? on: June 05, 2011, 09:25:00 PM
At least we know who the real nutcase is.
87  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am pretty confident we are the new wealthy elite, gentlemen. on: June 05, 2011, 09:23:21 PM
What makes you think speculation on stocks and currencies is not making society better?
It's entirely neutral - neither adding nor subtracting wealth from the economy. All it does is move it from one person to another person. Wealth is only added when someone in the world increases his output.
Wealth that comes from speculation comes from Option 3. If you take out a loan to buy bitcoin, and bitcoin goes up in price, you are snatching wealth from the bank, because the bank could have just bought bitcoin and earned a much higher return. You are also snatching wealth from the people who put their money in the bank, because they too could have used that money to buy bitcoin. The total wealth in the world hasn't changed; you have just changed the proportions in your favor.
I believe that we are in agreement.

If you move wealth from a non-productive means to a more productive means, you are increasing wealth.  When people speculate, they are making resources available toward more productive (at least in their opinion) means, and removing it from less productive means.
88  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am pretty confident we are the new wealthy elite, gentlemen. on: June 05, 2011, 07:18:43 PM
putting aside the rhetorical games, the point is that the wealth you'd like to have dumped in your lap needs either to come from somewhere else or to be created. those are the only two choices.
Exactly. A person wanting to gain wealth has three ways to do so:

1) Do more work
2) Do more productive work
3) Get wealth from someone else

Option 3 isn't necessarily immoral or illegal (receiving charity is an example, so is winning a bet) but it certainly isn't sustainable for everybody to do it.

If you want to improve your own economic situation and build a better society focus on 1 and 2 and forget about 3. (hint: speculation on stocks or currencies is not 1 or 2)

What makes you think speculation on stocks and currencies is not making society better?

I'm fairly on the fence of this, but I have to ask: What standard are we using for BTC's enormous momentum? Its market price? The size of its goods and services economy? The amount of processing power committed?
I'm optimistic about bitcoin because of two metrics:

1. Lots of people are interested in it, all over the world.

2. There are lots of interesting, innovative projects being built around bitcoin.

It is still VERY early days, and I'll say it again:  expect growing pains.

No way, Gavin!  It's gone up, so it will continue to go up.  Everyone's gonna be trillionaires!

I have some other interesting predictions:

This morning it was 72 degrees.  It's 100 degrees only 8 hours later!  In 10 days, we can expect temperatures of 840 degrees!  Invest in snow cones!

In 1970, Hispanics made up 4.7% of the population in the US.  In 2010, they made up 15.5%!  At current rates by 2050, 51% of the population will be Hispanic, and in 2090, 170% of the US population will be Hispanic!  Start learning Spanish!

What about him makes him a nutcase?

Can we get somebody to accept Bitcoins, then sell them and donate them to the campaign?

http://www.ronpaul2012.com/

This is illegal.  You cannot make donations for other people.  If you want to play with fire, go for it, though.  Sell yourself and donate yourself if you really want to, though.
91  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I am pretty confident we are the new wealthy elite, gentlemen. on: June 05, 2011, 06:49:38 PM
Are you currently putting all your money into bitcoin?  If you say this, you show you believe it by your actions.  I am putting all my money into bitcoin - I see a possibility of $50-$100+ per coin this year.  Just think, once the "bankers" and hedge funds find out about this, we are going to the moon.  Once my bitcoins are $1,000+ I will be able to pay off my growing college loans and maybe get an apartment, and my first car Smiley
I'm only a teenager. I could only scrounge up so much despite my 1000+ BTC loss. I have 95 BTC incubated so far.

This explains a lot.
92  Other / Politics & Society / Re: most libertarian US states? on: June 05, 2011, 06:21:43 PM
Many US states are libertarian in different ways.  The Free State Project's research is a good starting point.  Just remember that one of their criteria was that they were looking for a small state that could be influenced by an influx of people.  Texas, for instance, is libertarian in a lot of ways.  Michael Badnarik and Ron Paul, Libertarian Party presidential candidates, are from Texas.  But Texas would never be considered ripe for libertarian take-over.

Texas is so libertarian, that when some old lady's husband died the state decided she couldn't take care of herself anymore, sold her house for her, threw her in an assisted living home and forced her to pay for it with the proceeds from her house sale.  Yep that has libertarian written all over it.  Texas is very independent, not free, people often seem to confuse the two.

Texan has a lot of libertarians in it, that's for sure.  But the overall population is far from it.  But that's true almost anywhere.  But you seem some pretty big pockets here.

What kind of conversion rate are you proposing?
Are you a US player?
What kind of guarantee are you offering to ensure that you will send money after you are allowed to cash out?

The official rate (its like 14usd for 1btc atm). I can transfer first 100usd then u give me some btc and then we do the rest. Is that okay for u?
And iam from EU but guess we still have same servers right?

Anyone taking money from an insolvent company like Full Tilt is at their own risk.

They have no money to pay cashouts.  You are going to get scammed.
94  Economy / Economics / Re: BTC = $19?! on: June 05, 2011, 01:53:27 AM
wow crap, I sold a bunch at 17.5 yesterday,

should I buy back now?

It gets on my nerves whenever this otherwise excellent project is (rightfully) seen as a gambling speculation rather than as a medium of exchange. Apparently the folks opposing my anti-deflationary proposal, who are the majority, think it's a nice game where you can double your money within 24 hours and run away. Sigh

Oh noes, speculators might drive interest to something and have it make economic sense for people to invest sooner than they otherwise would have.
95  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Play BlackJack with Bitcoins! on: June 04, 2011, 09:45:48 PM
I played more for smaller amounts and of course now I win a few times.  It would be nice if cashing out didn't have the transaction fee, or give you the option to pay it.  But I got the bonus quickly.  Would do business again!

Just wish I could split!  Or see my balance while playing.
96  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Play BlackJack with Bitcoins! on: June 04, 2011, 09:40:07 PM
I've added the 10% for you.

I'm sorry that you had a really unlucky streak. Just before you started there was someone playing who had a reeeally lucky streak! I know this info won't help you much.. but still, maybe your 10% help you to either recover your loss our to play again Smiley

Okay, but now I'm going to bed for real..

Thanks for good customer service!  Sometimes the game is streaky!
97  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Play BlackJack with Bitcoins! on: June 04, 2011, 09:29:05 PM
Don't worry, everything is fine on my site Smiley It may take a few minutes for your deposit to be confirmed by the bitcoin blockchain, though!

I've put the 10% bonus into the first two users' accounts. The other bonuses I will add on Monday, have to sleep now (tomorrow is big moving day Shocked)

Ok, If it shows up in the blockchain I can play, then I'll play now.  You can give bonus later for my play today, right?

LOL I got the worst luck on these sites, I play 11 hands and lose 10, tie 1.

I can confirm that he at least will pay players back when they cash out.
