In honor of this thread I went out in my back yard shooting shit with all our guns with my son and his buddies.
802  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The Armory - Weapon Marketplace on: March 10, 2012, 05:52:08 PM
NYC pretty much banned all weapons, the violent crime rate is low. The largest city in USA didn't even get in top 30, Detroit with CC is number one.

1) Correlations don't establish cause-and-effect
2) Cherry picking correlations in an attempt to prove one's point is disingenuous.

As Holliday pointed out, Baltimore is hard to explain away based on gun laws there.  What's more, Baltimore is in Maryland, one of the most restrictive gun law states.  While most states are what's called "shall issue" (i.e. states issue CC permits based purely on background check), Maryland is one of the few "may issue" states where you need a "good reason" to CC.

Bottom line: criminals have guns regardless of which state they're in because they don't obey the law by definition.  They obtain guns easily for cash with no background check and carry them concealed all the time.  Laws can't stop this.

anyone else getting tons of these.. or just me? I am on rc2, for sure. Earlier in this thread it was mentioned it is supposed to be 'ok', but still.. it isn't going away..

Did you use the windows installer for rc2 or the zip file?  The installer is broken.  Use the zip file instead.

I suppose a closed p2p pool could be established where each node is authenticated to be there.  Of course then you'd have to have someone administrating it, granting and revoking access, etc.
805  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [320GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: March 08, 2012, 08:33:08 PM
it generally doesn't make any economical sense because it reduces attacker's revenue also and in case of p2pool they also lose finder's reward.

"...some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn."

There are people who would do this just for the sport.

 Cool
806  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER GPU FPGA overclock monitor fanspeed GCN RPC linux/windows/osx 2.3.1 on: March 08, 2012, 07:50:47 PM
Is it really that simple?  I thought you couldn't start p2pool until bitcoind had fully synced with the network (sometimes minutes).

Like suppose power is off for 2 or 3 hours.  It'd take bitcoind several minutes to catch up and I don't think it's responsive during that time.
807  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Version 0.6 release candidate 1 on: March 08, 2012, 11:27:58 AM
I upgraded from rc1 to rc2 and bitcoin is still stuck at 170059.

Did you use the windows installer to upgrade to rc2?  If so, download the zip file and use that instead.  The installer .exe for rc2 is broken.

During the winter I just position my PC next to a slightly open window.  Works great.

tucenaber and broker, you both need to upgrade to bitcoin 0.6.0rc2.

If you're on windows, look at my most recent post in this thread.  The 0.6.0rc2 installer doesn't work right.  You have to use the zip file.
I was sure I'd upgraded to rc2 but because the installer didn't work I was still on rc1 and had the problem you had.
810  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [320GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: March 08, 2012, 01:55:02 AM
Ahh.. this happened to me too.. I thought rc1 had corrupted my database.. but I guess it just never updated. The installer is definitely broken.
Is there a thread to report this on?  My guess is we're not the only ones having this problem.

A side note: you can still use rc1 but you have to put a speshul switch on it to work.  I found this in this thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=63165.msg789043#msg789043

Apparently the only difference between rc1 and rc2 is the internal date where it stops working and starts complaining to upgrade due to the BIP16 switchover.  The "-paytoscripthashtime=1333238400" switch delays it until 20120401.

It seems like the bitcoin client itself is unhappy.  I'm using bitcoin 0.6.0rc2 which is the latest AFAIK.  It reports the error "WARNING: Displayed transactions may not be correct!  You may need to upgrade, or other nodes may need to upgrade."

Based on your comments I'm quite confident that you're actually running 0.6.0rc1. What you are seeing is exactly symptomatic of rc1. You can get rc2 from http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitcoin/files/Bitcoin/bitcoin-0.6.0/test/   if you really did install rc2, are you sure you restarted after doing so?

I went to that URL and ran the windows installer .exe and it turns out it didn't overwrite the previous version's executables for some reason.  So I downloaded the corresponding zip file and extracted that, pointed my shortcuts to it and now it's fine.  Weird.

I'm sure I did this upgrade a while back but clearly there's some kind of installer problem with the rc2 windows installer.
812  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [320GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: March 07, 2012, 11:56:51 PM
I started getting a bunch of twisted errors today from the p2pool client.  I have the latest p2pool, cgminer and bitcoind.
Everything has been running fine for a week and I just noticed this today.

I'm surprised to see so many people opposing the Armory. Bitcoin facilitates anonymous commerce - what did you THINK would happen? Uglier things than this are already inevitable.

If you don't support the right to buy guns/drugs/whatever like this, but DO support the right to keep a secret on your computer, you should consider that these opinions might contradict.

With regard to firearms issues you'll find that the anti-gun groups are generally louder than the pro-gun groups.
I dunno about that. The NRA is pretty loud.

I meant on message boards.

Never, never use real information about yourself on free web sites.  On pay sites you generally have to.

My name is really Matthew N. Wright.

Got a problem with that?

Not at all.  My name is really Robert Paulson.

I knew a guy a few years back who had a little side business selling baseball cards on eBay.  All he did was buy those large boxes of cards and then sell them individually.  Almost all his profit came from the $2 shipping/handling he charged.

I noticed on Butterfly labs' website that they say that they're collecting sales tax for all US orders...how can that possibly be right?

I find that hard to believe.  The big guys don't do it so why would a little guy piss his customers off doing it?

I've signed up for literally hundreds of web sites and message boards and forgotten about maybe 90% of them.
