821  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Apply thermal paste to 6950? on: June 23, 2011, 02:45:03 AM
mx2/3, best thermal paste since arctic silver. i'm using mx2, very easy to apply.

manufacturers apply way too much paste on their chips, that's why replacing it is often a good idea and yields about 5-10K difference.

bitcoin is good for AMD and those who sell electricity.

jo. finds auch recht lustig, wie vermutlich der sohnemann der familienfirma n bisschen profit reinholen moechte. ein deutscher pool reicht, solang die hashrate von dem noch so gering ist. die verlosung halte ich fuer fake.
825  Local / Mining (Deutsch) / Re: Deutschsprachiger Pool btc.x8s.de >5Ghash/s on: June 22, 2011, 10:31:26 AM

826  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is anyone running their Mining Rigs in an Oil Tank? on: June 22, 2011, 09:22:07 AM
i hate that people did that. every time i'm talking about cooling to my dad, he ALWAYS refers to how fun it'd be to fill a comp with oil. :<
827  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Water or air cooling? on: June 22, 2011, 09:20:08 AM
too add in watercooling, itll run me about $150, so it might be worth it.
I plan to o'clock the shit outta this card anyway Smiley

Get a 5000btu a/c unit and box it to your unit so that cold air is forced onto the cards. Forget the watercooling.

never heard of btu before, the british have some really weird units.

1 watt is approximately 3.41214 BTU/h

so i guess that's what you mean. 1400W is not exactly cost efficient i would say. active cooling requires a lot of power consumption, it's not recommended unless you don't have any means left to get rid of the produced heat.

830  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Recommendation for unlockable 6950? on: June 22, 2011, 02:10:06 AM
Where is the 'dual bios switch' located?  Is this a 'virtual' switch in SW, or is it something I can see physically?  If it's hardware (not SW) - can I see it with the card plugged in, or do I have to power down and remove the card (like I would need to do to check for AMD logo on pin connector)?

Thanks.

I've got 3 x 6950s (2GB HIS) that are hoping to be unlocked (shaders only - I don't want to risk the 6970 flash).

@op: i bought a powercolor 6950 2gb in reference design, if you're in germany, buy from VV.
831  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Holy Hash Power Batman! on: June 22, 2011, 02:03:29 AM
well, 6 of these are from btcguild at 2.3Thash/s, so they were very lucky.
832  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What are some of the dangers of voltage tweaking GPUs? on: June 22, 2011, 01:34:25 AM
.... with a 5850. Using GPU-Z, it reached 145C for VRMs although GPU is like 48-50C.
Where do you see the temperature of the VRMs in GPU-Z?
I have a Sapphire 5830 Xtreme 1G, is it maybe GPU-Temp. #2??

VReg for vrms. probably no sensor there on your card. my gtx460 has only 1 sensor, which is the gpu temp.
833  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: mining contracts, 400£/GhpsMonth, 4 month minimum on: June 21, 2011, 11:02:09 PM
Quote
The price is 400£ per Ghps per Month.

Minimum contract length is 4 month.

2x6990+board+psu+cpu = ~1000gbp (for ~1.5Ghash/s). 4 months = 120 days = 2880 hours. rig eats ~0.9kW. that's 2600kWh. 0.20gbp per kWh = 520 gbp. so ~1500 gbp if i buy a 1.5Ghash/s rig. 1600 for renting your 1 Ghash/s for 4 months. good deal, bro.

aaaaaand for the guy above: do you expect 1 difficulty increase within 4 months? wow. but it doesn't really matter, because renting his 1 ghash/s for 4 months is more expensive than buying a 1.5 ghash/s rig and operate it for 4 months. so...

edit: i feel the urge to rant. "family business" my ass. his post sounds so damn serious yet all he does is scam people.

another edit: 4 months @ 1 ghash/s is about ~55 bitcoins if you assume a daily increase of 3% in the network's hashrate (it's been over 5% for a pretty long time now). i think mtgox is cheaper.
834  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Building a 6990 Rig - Operating System on: June 21, 2011, 09:37:57 PM
Just to add some of my small experience with the 6990's using Windows, I set the clocks 920/840 and get just under 400 MH/s per core(just under 800MH/s per card) with fans set at a constant 90% the GPUs get around 70-75c except for GPU2 which is at 81c. I noticed when going lower with mem clock it actually gains heat (1-2 degree's). Also these is a switch near the crossfire port that will turn stock 830/1250 into 880/1250, I used afterburner to get the 920/840. Also something to think about is that you can not under clock memory less than 100mhz of core clocks(you can visually do it but the effectivness is zero and will reset your mem clock back 1250, at least in linux anyway). I did get over 405 MH/s by setting the clocks to 940/840 but didn't want the extra heat or didn't want to increase fan speeds above 90%. The temps are stable and barely move. I used Phoenix Riser with "vectors" "13 aggression" and use the "BFI_INT" as extra flags. I still need to tinker around with the fan speeds to see what effect it has when lowering them, but im happy with 2 x 6990's(I use to have 3 but got too hot under linux) which produces just under 1600 MH/s

Hey dude, nice workaround, I'm having trouble with my 3x6990's temperatures. I have one question, you mention that underclocking more than 100mhz of core clocks will default to 1250, so how did you manage to get to 840 in linux? or did you end up using windows and afterburner for good? thanks!

edit: anyhow, thanks for the input. maybe 6950s are the same, because i can't get my memory clock down. gonna try going for coreclock-100MHz now.

edit²: nope, i can't underclock my memory.
835  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: where are miners selling now days with mtgox having issues? on: June 21, 2011, 09:23:24 PM
i doubt miners sell on a daily basis. they will probably wait for mt gox to be back in business.
836  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Price/difficulty ratio of profitability on: June 21, 2011, 02:15:57 PM
i use this:

Code:
cost := watt*24*elecost/100000; // electricity cost in cents
money := btccost*50*24*60*60/(difficulty*Power(2,32) / (hash*1024*1024) ); // where hash = hashrate in Mhash/s and btccost = price of 1 btc in usd.
profit := money-cost;

that's your daily profit.

furthermore, i use this to calculate the average time for each retarget in days:

Code:
procedure getdays();
var bt, bs: double; // where bt = time to solve 1 block and bs = number of blocks solved
begin
  bt := 600;
  bs := 0; days := 0;
  while (true) do
  begin
    bt := bt/(1+0.01*increase);  // increase = the daily increase in total network hashing power in %
    bs := bs + 24*60*60/bt;
    if bs > 2016 then break;
    days := days+1;
    increase := increase*0.96;  // i assume increase is going down by 4% per day. you can leave it out if you don't believe in this.
  end;
end;

then i use this number of average days for my difficulty formula:

Code:
difficulty := difficulty*Power((1+0.01*increase),days);

with these calculations i can simulate my profit over a period of time. although i can only assume a constant bitcoin value, because nobody can predict the future, right? :/

edit: i know it's not too precise, because i "round" everything to days, but i don't think it makes that much of a difference. not sure, though.
837  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Water or air cooling? on: June 21, 2011, 08:37:57 AM
well, a waterblock is about 70€ (new, ~50€ used). you're on 6870s which cost about 130€. i wouldn't buy waterblocks for these cards. but it's up to you. if you don't plan to swap your cards anytime soon, it might still be a good investment (given that noise can be really annoying).

here's the waterblock: http://www.ekwaterblocks.com/shop/EK-PSS/EK-PSS-3831109835210.pdf

i don't know about any watercooling resellers in the US, but there should be some decent ones out there (we have about 3 huge ones in germany).
838  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: DUST! on: June 21, 2011, 08:30:16 AM
dust filter on front, watercooling. no dust inside my case after about 6 months of 24/7. Smiley good investment.
839  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Any solo miners here with less than 1GH/s? on: June 21, 2011, 12:32:56 AM
not worth it, even with something like 10 GH/s, it's possible to go a full month without finding a single block if you got hit with a difficult one

they're all the same difficulty. but yes, imagine you'd have to get 5 mil shares for your first block. that would take you years. and at the current difficulty 5 mil shares is not too unrealistic.
840  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: What are some of the dangers of voltage tweaking GPUs? on: June 20, 2011, 12:32:25 PM
he's talking about the vrms which usually get as hot as the gpu, except they are not cooled as efficiently (thus they get even warmer). 110C is not unusual on stock cooling. vrm overheating is the most common reason for graphics cards to melt. especially when overclocking/not providing an airflow with fresh, cool air or using a non-reference design which does not efficiently cool the vrms. my gpu only solution on a gtx460 results in very high vrm temperatures (i didn't think the 460s would produce that much heat and a fullcover block was relatively expensive).

[actually, i'm really tired and don't know if what i said makes sense]

in other words, be careful when your gpu temperature goes beyond 90°C, as your vrms will be much hotter at that point.

another point is, especially on the newer cpus, voltage peaks which occur right after your cpu goes from idle to load. that was the reason a lot of sandy bridges died. i don't know if gpus suffer from that, too. so high voltages may damage your hardware, too.
