Silk Road admin arrested and servers seized:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=306331.0

If true, this could have some impact on price.

I just sold a bunch of coins.

HOLY SHIT

IT IS TRUE

Look at the linkedin of the guy, read his bio, the Walter White kind of guy: http://www.linkedin.com/in/rossulbricht

Interesting quote:
Now, my goals have shifted. I want to use economic theory as a means to abolish the use of coercion and agression amongst mankind. Just as slavery has been abolished most everywhere, I believe violence, coercion and all forms of force by one person over another can come to an end. The most widespread and systemic use of force is amongst institutions and governments, so this is my current point of effort. The best way to change a government is to change the minds of the governed, however. To that end, I am creating an economic simulation to give people a first-hand experience of what it would be like to live in a world without the systemic use of force.

Looks like this may very well be the guy.

https over Tor is useless when connecting to hidden services, because then you already have end-to-end encryption.

But when exploring clearnet from Tor, https is very useful and can protect again a malicious exit node.
825  Economy / Services / Re: http://hidden-service.tk - Simplest How - To Hidden Service [ Ubuntu ] on: October 01, 2013, 01:21:10 PM
stay away from web-tor-gateways.

only a retard would recommend using those.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
As long as you are only looking and not doing anything illegal there is no good reason not to use such gateways.
It is better to connect to TOR yourself. How do you know the data being transferred is not being modified or recorded?
Yes, it's better, but if you trust the gateway it's a fair solution to check out a site without firing up Tor first.

829  Economy / Services / Re: About 20 Bitcoins STOLEN from my Blockchain.info wallet! 5btc reward! on: September 28, 2013, 12:27:22 AM

paper wallets are really easy to print out.

How exactly can I make one and how do they work?
There are many ways... here is one way to do it:

Download this website: bitaddress.org

Save it on an USB stick and boot up your computer without internet connection. Then generate addresses and print out.

PS: I must warn you that even an offline computer could steal your addresses if you ever plug it back online. One way to minimize this risk is to use a live OS such as tails or simply use an old computer that will never connect to the web again.
830  Economy / Services / Re: About 20 Bitcoins STOLEN from my Blockchain.info wallet! 5btc reward! on: September 27, 2013, 10:20:08 PM
Sorry for your loss.

Other than trying to follow the money flow you're left with the IP address used to relay the transaction. It may be that whoever stole it didn't mask his IP and in that case maybe you can connect it to an account at blockchain.info, bitcointalk.org etc... not sure if they will help you with that though.

Googling the IP doesn't give us much, but we find this:
derekl [derekl!b83abf54@gateway/web/freenode/ip.184.58.191.84] has joined #zeromq

Apparently a guy "derekl" joined a chatroom with that IP. But does it belong to a gateway? I'm not sure how IRC works there, maybe someone else can comment.

 $500 in 6 months easy...

Bit of an understatement don't you think?

We went from about $30 to $266 extremely fast and that was when nobody knew about bitcoin.

This time we are starting at $140 and the whole world is watching...

*Plus China gets to play this time around.

I'm a pretty conservative guy. I'd not be shocked if we were $5,000 in six months looking at this difficulty curve but I'm not going to make that call on the record Smiley

Actually, there has been an alternative for a while, namely the Malta-based hedge fund "Exante" (having 80 000 BTC in their storage at the time of the article).

from the article:
Quote
Current assets under management in the Bitcoin Fund are $3.2 million (80,000 BTC) and there is no performance-based fee. However, the fund charges an annual management fee o.5% of Net Share Value payable monthly in order to provide the sophisticated security and wallet management that one would expect with such large amounts at stake.

Hurry till no performance fee is charged  Wink
Not sure what you're trying to say.
833  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: September 26, 2013, 11:08:12 PM
Anyone who sells a single Bitcoin right now is a complete moron.  There is a truly limited supply which doesn't exist anywhere else in the investment world. When the institutional investors get their hands on them, (which they have been unable to do until today) they won't be selling them back to you or putting them on these amateur exchanges. They could easily buy every Bitcoin on all of the exchanges in a couple of days.  When the price goes to $1000, it could happen overnight and your tiny $200 ask price will be eaten on the way up.  You haven't seen a real whale yet.
Actually, there has been an alternative for a while, namely the Malta-based hedge fund "Exante" (having 80 000 BTC in their storage at the time of the article). However, it is limited to non-us countries. Now that the gates are also open for US, it's a big step for bitcoin.
834  Local / Skandinavisk / Re: I need a computer, buy it for me at komplett and I will pay you bitcoins. on: September 26, 2013, 05:25:48 PM

it would appear Stamps has made similar changes.

https://www.bitstamp.net/article/bitstamp-new-verification-requirements/

as of the 30th you'll need to be registered to withdraw bitcoin or cash.
Wow! It seems the foundation's meeting with three-letter-agencies guys wasn't fruitless. Another meeting or two and KYC&AML will be integrated into the bitcoin protocol. Smiley
836  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: September 25, 2013, 03:21:09 PM
You people had more than enough time to leave Gox. Just admit that you are gambling on a positive resolve of the situation.
Actually, those leaving money in mtgox are not just gambling, they are part of the solution. If a bank run is prevented and trading continues mtgox will keep making profit and can eventually become solvent again (assuming they are currently fractional reserve) even if they are never paid their debt (millions of dollars: frozen, coinbase..).
837  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer - MtGoxUSD wall movement tracker - Hardcore on: September 25, 2013, 02:55:53 PM

So people are still not able to withdraw from mtgox or is just it takes too long time to withdraw from them? Which one is  it?

now you need to be registered to withdraw BTC.
( there appears to be no official word about this )

Is there proof of this, or is this just rumour mill nonesense, FUD?
If you login with Tor, VPN etc you have always been required to verify your account, even for BTC withdraws. This is nothing new. If, however, you are required to verify your account when you only used your own IP, then this is new, but not surprising.

International wire is delayed by months. SEPA transfers less than certain amounts occurs within a few weeks usually.

It's not speculation which the liberty reserve case clearly shows. If you don't verify customers using "imaginary internet money" you are a target of the US. The reason is that users could be from the US using a VPN etc to access your service, if you don't verify customers you have no way of ensuring that. So you MUST, with no exception, verify all customers. All business must do this, and those who don't will risk ending up like liberty reserve.

liberty reserve was handling real life money

BTC is imaginary internet money

From what i heard the US was only interested in tracking USD going in and out of exchanges not BTC

Actually no. From my understanding, LRUSD was an "imaginary internet currency" and not backed by actual USD. Yes, exchangers would trade it for USD, but there was no actual reserve guarantee. That is what makes this case so interesting. Liberty Reserve was basically a centralized version of bitcoin.

edit: and if you don't deny all US customers you will also have to become licensed in the US. If you are fully licensed in the US (is mtgox?) you may be able to skip the legitimation requirement in a few cases, but I'm not sure about that.
