841  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you trust the miners? on: September 21, 2015, 02:16:28 PM
Hey all. Recent developments around the block size debate have sparked alot of discussion about several topics. I've seen many people arguing that BIP100 gives too much power to the miners. I'm not trying to provoke feelings one way or another, I'm just looking to see if people are willing to put their trust on miners about such decisions.
Why wouldn't you trust the miners? they are the ones who secure the network and maintain decentralization. There is an incentive to every and each miner to avoid the 51% attack.

Around the time I posted this, there was talk about BIP100 giving too much control to the miners. The argument of some was that while miners benefit and are rewarded from bitcoin by nature, their goal is very short term or instant profit, they don't care about bitcoin succeeding, so although the power they have over bitcoin right now is much, users accept that, but trusting them with the block size limit choice seemed to be too much for some. I myself don't think that trusting miners with the block size limit vote would be an issue and hence why I asked this question.

I'll add my personal experience here.

I bought a single item from this seller and it was delivered as promised. 10 cents aren't that big of a deal to me anyway but the item was delivered so no problems in that regard. That still doesn't mean you should trust this seller with big amounts though.
843  Other / Meta / Re: Ban appeal - TradeFortress; re theymos dox on: September 21, 2015, 02:04:45 PM
While I'm no supported of TF I think that him pushing the limits of this whole doxing thing is somewhat important. People might call him a troll and all but I'm not aware of many people that would risk trying to push the limits of rules.

We had salty saying that people wouldn't be banned or have their posts deleted if they posted theymos' dox along becaus of him having scammed them, as it would be treated just like any other dox, yet TF is banned after he posts info about said dox and the post is deleted. That was after salty saying what he said.

Why I consider this important? Well, there needs to be something done about doxing in here. Theymos posted in the other thread which I consider a step to the right direction but TF is right when he calls out the double standard of deleting staffer doxes almost instantly while innocent people can still be targeted with just a claim.

Good job on the digging man, you're making it to headlines again.
845  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Circle approved for BitLicense, new "All USD" wallet app to be announced. on: September 21, 2015, 11:56:46 AM
This reminds me of changetip finding out after a poll that BTC made people less likely to use them, so they featured USD tipping despite the hardship regulations could bring. This isn't directly beneficial for bitcoin but even for the few people that are going to find out about it's existence though an service they use I'm confident that it's worth it. If people trust circle for non bitcoin uses, finding out about bitcoin through a trusted app is going to be a good introduction.
846  Other / Meta / Re: Should people who promote ponzis in their signature be given a negative trust? on: September 21, 2015, 10:51:58 AM
i voted no, mostly ponzi signatures is just a paid one and some users only want to earn and not really promote the site in their sig
As to that argument I have two counter-arguments:
1) There are lots of signature campaigns so there is not really a necessity for joining a signature camp for a ponzi site.
2) Running for a signature campaign that you know is scam , and still turning a blind eye as to what effects it may have is a shady behaviour.
Although I do agree signature participants should be given a chance before they should be given a negative feedback for promoting a scam.

I have got 2 negative trust points for a link in my signature.
What can I do,
nothing...the voters have the last word even if they are wrong.
because this 2 negative trust points i have lost a sponsor.
What can i do?
Nothing.
Remove my link?
So if a link does not please  in a signature it need just to give negative trust points?
Do you think this is a fair system?
What would you say If I and severals of my friends would give you negative trust points for a wrong reason?
Because with my negative trust points you not only hurt me,but as well all winspiral's members who can lose money for a lying.

be carefull with your trust vote...it can fast be  explosive...
yes if you vote negative because you suppose that the member coulf eventually be a scammer...then you play with the fire and you can burn yourself.
Of course, ponzis and their advertisements aren't against the rules here or anything but leaving trust ratings freely is also not against the rules. If the single person in default trust that left you negative thinks advertising ponsis while not disclosing what they actually are is immoral they he's free to accuse you. While you probably didn't scam someone directly, the most responsible thing to do while advertising something would be to warn people that are potentially interested on what they could be getting into.
847  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Breaking News! European Refugee Crisis Resolved! on: September 21, 2015, 10:36:50 AM
Funny thing is that it's not just refugees. They're is a continuous influx of west Africa immigrants. Clearly they're taking advantage of the situation. They have sums from 2k USD to 5k USD at their disposal to be smuggled from their place to Europe before they sink their boats to hide evidence and get a chance to apply for asylum along with actual refugees.

EU statisticians claim only 1 in 5 migrants are from Syria

West africa?
No, not as many as you might think.

Hmm yeah, I might have exaggerated a bit. Thanks for linking straight to the source of the statistic, that was a better read actually.
848  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Proof that Quickseller is BiPolarBob/PistolPete AND intended to SCAM! on: September 21, 2015, 03:37:24 AM
I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, but I am guessing he would keep it low key. Overall he messed up, but compared to the 100s of scams here he is small potatoes. Why not dox the big scammers like FriedCat who walked with millions? It amuses me that people care more about a guy who self escrowed and did not steal over people who take lots of coins and bail.

The reason why this became such a huge deal was probably because of two reasons:

1) He had tons of haters already, so they just pounced on him.
2) He was a very trusted member.

The later probably played a bigger role in all this. Every time a reputable member turns out to be a fraud with solid evidence presented against them the whole thing blows up. With Quickseller it wasn't much different, except that he was also participating into making all this a big deal by defending himself non stop and refusing to acknowledge his mistakes, coming out as an asshat and being hated even more in the end.
849  Other / Meta / Re: [poll] Should doxing be banned? on: September 20, 2015, 09:48:42 AM
I particularly don't like anyone doxing anyone so I voted yes, but shouldn't this topic be discussed in meta?

Been told this multiple times now. I'll move to meta and mods can decide if it's off topic or not.
850  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Breaking News! European Refugee Crisis Resolved! on: September 20, 2015, 09:45:57 AM
I will tell you how to deal with this crisis. Close the borders now. Announce that Europe is at its limit and won't accept any more refugees.
Everyone who will reach borders of EU from now on will be deported to their homelands. - This is the correct way of dealing with this.
Europe CANNOT accept more and more of refugees because if they accept 1.000 now there will be 3.000 next month and 1.00000 in 6 months.
It will be never ending stream of emigrants from now on, just because they think EU is so great that they can live there for free.

851  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin stress test on: September 20, 2015, 08:26:02 AM
Bitcoin set a record on Sept. 16 2016. 256,000 transactions in one day.

https://www.coinbase.com/charts
Unfortunately, most are spam transactions.

Of course most of those are spam transactions, there's no good reason actual use would rise that much in a day. Even the current everyday use of in-blockchain transactions could be reduced by making bitcoin gambling games using blockchain transactions from bets have off-chain technologies as dice websites do. Luckybit and Satoshidice for example, started with a simple idea but are now owning the addreses with the most transactions ever.
852  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is a fixed small block size long term sustainable? on: September 20, 2015, 07:22:58 AM
The thought behind a larger block size is that more users would be able to benefit from extremely low fee of bitcoin transaction, thus drive it to mainstream adoption

But based on my observation, the low fee and fast transaction does not contribute too much to the adoption. Adoption rate always rise when the exchange rate rises (In a fiat money flooded world, no one really need bitcoin to buy groceries, majority of people treat it as investment/speculation, rest are money launderers, drug dealers and gamblers...)

In fact, the exchange rate risk is magnitudes higher than the fee, so spending 0.0001 bitcoin or 0.01 bitcoin for fee really does not make any difference since the biggest cost comes from exchange rate risk

This is one of the main reasons I believe that pushing for a block size limit increase with the hopes that bitcoin adoption will grow and will have to be contained in the blockchain is faulty rasoning. That in addition to the fact that most adoption bitcoin has had up until now was thanks to some kind third party technologies that made it more accessible, usefull, or somehow appealing to use. To say that a lightning network or any third party technology to support innovation and more transactions per second on top of the existing technology would be bad while praising existing adoption and wanting more is highly hypocritical. We haven't even had a good chance to judge those possible future solutions and FUDsters are already calling the death of bitcoin if it's block size limit doesn't increase. Funnily enough, when not under a stress test, even the 1Mb limit seems big.

I saw a post on reddit with a German article suggesting that the Interior minister their is now favoring a cap on refugees and suggested outside camps on Africa. Someone posted a translation, but I havent seen this reported in English yet.

Edit: I should mention that Capms being built in africa was covered by the Guardian.

European governments are aiming to deny the right of asylum to innumerable refugees by funding and building camps for them in Africa and elsewhere outside the European Union.

854  Economy / Digital goods / Re: Csgo Jackpot Site + Bot NodeJs + Instructions on: September 20, 2015, 06:38:06 AM
Who cares if you are russian anod this bot is russian or not , bottom line is .. you are selling free stuff while they are available in public on many websites and hre is an example : https://www.nulled.io/topic/47099-original-fire-csgo-japot-script-how-to-sql/?hl=%2Bcsgo+%2Bjackpot

Good job with the warning. I wonder how many of those script sellers/developers are actually leaching their content from nulled.io or similar forums.
855  Other / Meta / Re: Should people who promote ponzis in their signature be given a negative trust? on: September 20, 2015, 06:01:34 AM
I don't know why but I feel as if the thread is getting a bit derailed.
I see many people voted no for negative trust but I still don't think I have seen a strong argument as to why.

Well, I think that occasional negative ratings can be ok. If for example someone is trying to deceive people into thinking that a HYIP/PONZI/PYRAMID is an actual investment opportunity without disclosing risks then in my opinion he's doing something very controversial. Such schemes benefit early 'investors' which the advertiser is likely one of them, as well as providing heavy referral rewards. It's very likely that any successful promotion will lead to people losing money.
856  Other / Meta / Re: Why is non-consensual release of personal information allowed? on: September 20, 2015, 02:12:27 AM
Oh man, this keeps getting more and more complicated.

With TF risking to push this argument one step further, I'm starting to question the credibility of what SaltySpitoon said. I'm aware that he's an individual holding his own opinions but it's unclear if he was speaking representing the forum's administration board here.

Could we perhaps get a word from theymos on the matter?
857  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Turns out that the woman behind AbbyBitcoin was a token bitcoin girl. [Fraud] on: September 20, 2015, 02:04:43 AM
Update from the group she was involved with.

https://archive.is/7ob0O

According to them it's largely an issue between her and a partner of the past? And they also claim that she lied about not knowing about bitcoin? This keeps getting more complicated.

Η προσφορά ισχύει μόνο για την ημέρα των εκλογών

Κυριακή 20 Σεπτεμβρίου 2015 από τις 7:00 πμ μέχρι τις 7:00μμ

Νεος στην Uber;

1) Κατέβασε το Uber app στα αντίστοιχα app stores. Η εφαρμογή Uber είναι διαθέσιμη για λειτουργικά iOS, Android or Windows
(Χρήστης BlackBerry; Email us here για πρόσβαση στο mobile site!)

2) Διάλεξε το UberVOTE

3) Κάλεσε ένα UberVOTE όταν είσαι έτοιμος να ψηφίσεις.

its like saying someone who witnesses a rape and does nothing is innocent

Technically, someone who witnesses a rape and does nothing IS innocent.   Undecided

You can't force morality on people.  You can't make people believe what you believe.

Some people on this planet only look out for themselves.

Witnessing a crime and not reporting is a in fact crime in most of Europe. I can't speak of the USA as I'm not even sure what the equivalent term in English since I'm a non-native speaker.

That is ridiculous.Who would come forward in court as eye witness if he would fear of being persecuted for witnessing the crime? One would rather keep mum than help in investigation

ahem

860  Other / Meta / Re: Why is non-consensual release of personal information allowed? on: September 19, 2015, 11:24:11 PM
What I find most ironic about this is that someone must've went out of his way to program the forum detecting and instantly banning users for posting what's essentially a link. There must be no other case that this is happening. I've seen this forum being flocked by xrumer bots trying to promote stuff completely not related to bitcoin, such posts wouldn't get removed until a mod saw them. Yet you make such a huge exception only for what's the alleged dox of a bitcointalk staffer because it's spam.

And please don't get me wrong. I like this forum and admire theymos, I'm not willing to attack anyone here. But a forum mod supporting doxing directly contradicts what this forum is doing with this certain link. You might as well accept that SaltySpitoon and stop trying to dodge this argument.
If Theymos has scammed you and post his dox, you won't be banned, nor will you be banned for posting anyone's dox with the exceptions given earlier in the thread.

Ok, that sounds more fair. But it brings up some other points of mine. Anyone can come here and claim that theymos has scammed them right? Would the claim be enough? Dismissing the claim would count as censorship according to the 'deleting doxing is bad for freedom of speech' mentality.

I've been saying that allowing doxing can be abused because according to the current views (you seem to have) on this, (and correct me if I'm wrong), someone could use bitcointalk to post a scam accusation claiming that he was scammed by someone and include his dox (Motivation to do this could be anything from hate, trolling to actual scamming).

In that case, will you question the validity of his claims? If there's no factual proof of the scamming taking place should the dox remain up? Would you accept counter claims by the accused?

And finally, since I don't see this forum having any handling of takedown notices, is there any way someone could get his dox removed from bitcointalk aside from legal action?

This gets absurdly complicated. I can't speak of actual laws, which are obviously largely ignored in this thread. But the sheer complexity that this reaches is the reason I think doxing should be entirely banned, (ideological and moral reasoning aside).
