861  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blockchain.info/wallet is the BEST Bitcoin client as-of-date. on: February 14, 2012, 12:31:56 PM
The best client depends on your use case. IMO there is no silver bullet.
More and more people use their smart devices more than their ordinary computer, and being able to pay (small) amounts with a few clicks is very appealing.
BitcoinSpinner was designed for this purpose, and has some nice features related to this discussion:
  • You decide when to update the software
  • Back up once and for all using a QR-code
  • Ready for use right after installation
  • Private key never leaves device
  • Server cannot spend your coins

New color looks good.

I think the following is a bug: On my Android 2.3 phone, every time I restart the app I get the BitcoinSpinner title bar, but the window is just black. I have to press my phone's back button for the content to appear.

I am not able to reproduce this behavior. Please help me debug by trying out a few things. Questions:

Does it happen if you leave the app running and wait for the power saver to kick in, and restart?
Does it happen if you close the app with the 'back' button, and restart?
Does it happen if you close the app with the 'home' button, and restart?
Does it happen every time you close and start the app, or do you have to run some other apps in between?

How about if you are not on the main screen? Does this happen on the Send Coins page, Transaction History page?

I have the same bug, this is definitely new behavior (came with the latest update). As far as I can tell it only happens when you leave the app running in the background for some time. I'll try these and report back.

Edit: 2. and 3. work. I don't know how 4. is different from 1.? I'm pretty sure the cause is the same as it was with the crash earlier.
Thanks for the feedback.
Do you observe the same behavior when you are in the Send Coins view, Transaction history view, or Settings view?

BitcoinSpinner is great, good work!

I think one really simple change would make the app look much better and more professional though: Change that orange color to black or light grey. =)
You are right. this does look much nicer. So which one should it be, black or white?
Version 0.4.6b released, which is based on the color scheme suggested by fimp. Please take your time to leave a review at the Android Market while updating.

Hi, I really like BitcoinSpinner!
Is it possible to multiple accounts/addresses, like bitcoind allows?

Thanks. Please leave a five star review at the Android Market  Wink

BitcoinSpinner currently only uses one Bitcoin address, but you can manage several wallets by using the backup/restore functionality. I have 2 QR-code backups, one for the BitcoinSpinner donation address and one for my private wallet. Swapping back and forth is as easy as scanning a QR-code.

More work could certainly be done on the GUI at some point, but I believe the above change carry a large improvement in looks for almost no effort.

"Coins are on their way to you"... And they never arrive. It says transactions are unconfirmed, but they are not; for example https://www.blockchain.info/tx-index/15213369/b25e3d8fe485c4ee99d38cc801e158abb2c6632bba72cd3c1cd480c20de7161c is already confirmed many times, but is not shown on Spinner. I'm using Galaxy Nexus, rooted device with 4.0.2 yakjuxw firmware.
There has been a glitch in the block chain download on the server side, which caused processing of incoming transactions to freeze. I have re-scanned the block chain and everything should work as expected. I'll investigate what caused the freeze to happen.

I think I have noticed a bug, either in the BCCAPI or in BitcoinSpinner.

Yeah, seems that you uncovered a bug on the server side. Tell me your bitcoin address and I'll take a close look.
870  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitcoinSpinner on: February 02, 2012, 05:03:24 PM
I'm sure I missed this but when are you going to come out with an iPhone version?
Good question. I wish I could say that it is just around the corner, but I can't. When I started the BCCAPI (pure core Java) I had no experience with Android. I was lucky that someone did the initial steps for BitcoinSpinner on top of that API, so that I had something to work on.
For an iPhone app I'd have to reimplement the API in a C-like language. This is however not the biggest hurdle. I'll have to do the investment of learnng yet another framework, and right now I simply cannot do this. You know, family, job etc.

I hear you  Smiley
I am not really good at graphics design or choosing colors. So please help me out by:
Taking the screenshots here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.miracleas.bitcoin_spinner
Open them in your favorite bitmap editor, change the colors to your liking, and post them in this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=53353.0
Then I'll apply it to the code if folks generally like it.

Thanks Jan.  I gave about 50 demonstrations of sending bitcoins at CES and I used your app the majority of the time.  It's very simple and very fast.

it is also included in the deposit card video demo.  I gave this same demo in person to people all last week at CES.  it is pretty cool when the phone goes "cha-ching" with the text message alert a few seconds after I send the money from your client. Thanks for fixing the 1 BTC minimum.  I had to keep reloading my wallet at the show so I wouldn't run out of money during the demos!

This is an awesome demo! Thanks for sharing, and for demoing BitcoinSpinner at CES.

Is it possible to make the screens zoomable?  This is especially needed for transaction page.  Also rotation of the screens would be consistent with Android functionality.
There is definitely room for improvement. I'll have to look into the transaction history and see what can be done.
Just noticed in settings the"transaction history size" option.

What is this exactly and what am I to enter into the field?  A number or word?
The size option allows you to specify how many records you would like to fetch from the server. This allows you to conserve how much bandwidth should use whenever opening the transaction history. The default, which is 15 obviously needs to be displayed. I'll fix that.
874  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitcoinSpinner on: January 27, 2012, 03:06:43 PM
The latest version is 0.4.5b
It is now... yesterday it wasn't.  However, I've just upgraded again and it now shows "received with".

I don't know if you're a native English speaker or not, but the phrasing is a little weird.  "with" isn't the right preposition.  "to" or "by" would be better (i think "by" in this case).  "with" is to describe the thing that did the receiving, not the destination.  So "received with bitcoinspinner" might be reasonable but "received with <bitcoin address>" is a bit off.

It's not a major issue; just in case you care; and just in case the above is helpful.
The Android market on your device caches app information, and sometimes it takes quite some time before new versions trickles all the way out. I believe that restarting your device is a cure for this, but in general you don't want to reboot your device whenever  you update an app.

I am not a native English speaker, and the phrase may be weird. However, I am leaning against the satoshi client, which does it the same way. Anyway, going forward I will revisit the transaction history and see if I can render it differently, and especially allowing the user to click on a record and see some more details.

After updating to the latest version, when I start spinner it just sits there with a black screen and a bar that says BitcoinSpinner at the top. It will stay like this as long as I let it. When I hit the back arrow (HTC Evo) it will finally show the app.
There is a known initialization issue which kicks in when leaving the app running in the background on low end devices. I am traveling this week, but have a fix which i will submit once properly tested. Sorry for the inconvenience.
This has now been fixed in the latest update (0.4.5b), confirmed both by Holliday and cypherdoc (thanks). More info in the Alternative clients thread on BitcoinSpinner.
876  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitcoinSpinner on: January 26, 2012, 04:00:19 PM
Since these were the remaining two bugs I can concentrate on address book and PIN enhancements. If you find any other issues or the update for some reason does not fix these issues please post in this thread.
On transaction history, all "received from" entries show my bitcoinspinner address rather than the true "received from" address.

If I had to guess I would say that you've accidentally set it to show the "to" field for both "send" and "receive" type records.  It should be "to" for "sends" and "from" for "receiveds".
Previously the transaction history showed "Received from" and then the receiving address (not the sending address), which was a bug . Now it displays "Received with" and still the receiving address.
I have the absolute latest version installed, 0.4.4b, and it says "Received from:" and shows my own wallet address, not the address of the sender.  It is in no way the "received from".  It's also not useful: I know my address, I want to know who originated the transaction.  Perhaps this is a problem because there can be multiple sending addresses ... okay, but if there is only one, show that (as most of the time it is).  Or at least change it to "received by" or "received to".
The latest version is 0.4.5b

By the way, you should try out the Donation feature in BitcoinSpinner, which is reachable when you choose options on the main screen. It hasn't been tested much  Grin

I thought that 0.005 went to the server operator for larger transactions?
No unfortunately not  Wink
BitcoinSpinner is totally free, and depending on donations. The 0.0005 BTC fee (less than a cent) goes to the miner who includes your transaction in a block.
Some Bitcoin nodes (depending on which version they run) will not forward your transaction unless it contains a 0.0001 BTC fee per 1000 bytes of transaction size (or the input for the transactions are 'old'). Some miners (depending on software version etc) will not include your transaction in a block unless it contains a 0.0005 BTC fee per 1000 bytes of transaction size.
More info on transaction fee calculations here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=51081.0

The fee structure is there not only to give the miners an incentive to mine, but also (and importantly) to avoid that someone floods the network with microscopic transactions. If you have to pay 0.0005 BTC for each transaction a flood attack will cost you real money.

Displaying the receiving address (your bitcoin address) when receiving coins reflects how the satoshi client shows transaction records. The reason why this was chosen is probably that often there are many sending addresses containing fractions of BTC that are sent to one receiving address. I could change it to show all the sending addresses, but I am afraid this will clutter the UI. Instead I am thinking about letting the user click a transaction to see all the details.

879  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: BitcoinSpinner on: January 26, 2012, 01:57:30 PM
it seems to crash consistently when it runs in the background for a while. I've sent a report.
I can reproduce this now.
Root cause: On android devices apps may be resumed on any activity (screen) when they have been sent to the background. I knew that, but what I didn't know is that the app's process may be killed entirely and its resources reclaimed by the OS AND then the app may be resumed in any activity it was in before going into the background.

On low end devices this apparently happens all the time when you put the app into the background and start another app or two. I am pretty sure this is what you observe. Basically this means that the app needs to be able to re-initialize on any activity. I have a fix in mind, but it may take a week or two before I get it in. Please be patient.
Version 0.4.5b is out which fixes the re-initialization issue reported by vuce (thanks).

Update details:
This is a bug fix upgrade that addresses the two remaining known BitcoinSpinner bugs:
  • Fix for re-initialization bug that occurs after BitcoinSpinner's process/resources have been reclaimed by the OS. BitcoinSpinner now handles this gracefully on any Activity (screen), meaning that if you send BitcoinSpinner to the background on any screen (Send bitcoins, Transaction history etc) and the OS decides to reclaim the process to make room for other processes, then the app re-initializes properly and shows the right screen when you bring it to the foreground again.
  • Fix for the "have network connection but not internet connection bug". Sometimes you have connection to a wi-fi network that does not allow you to reach the internet. This is for instance the case in many hotels where you are redirected to a web-page where you have to accept some terms or pay money to get internet access. Previously this caused BitcoinSpinner to block during initialization forever, showing a black screen.

Since these were the remaining two bugs I can concentrate on address book and PIN enhancements. If you find any other issues or the update for some reason does not fix these issues please post in this thread.

880  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BIP 16 / 17 in layman's terms on: January 25, 2012, 10:04:50 PM
Right now, it looks like one person/pool (Tycho/deepbit) has enough hashing power to veto any change. I believe Tycho liked, and planned to support, the original OP_EVAL proposal, but doesn't like/support either BIP 16 or BIP 17 (he does like/support BIP 11, the multisignature-as-standard-transactions part of all this), so unless he changes his mind or there is a mass exodus from his pool short, multisignature bitcoin addresses will have to wait.
Has it really come to this... bitcoin community having to beg one person to accept changes. I am in shock!
