962  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 92 year old WWII veteran kills intruder with rifle on: September 10, 2012, 02:53:16 PM
he shot to kill the moment he saw the burglar. he didnt take a second to determine if the guy was armed. he didnt fire a warning shot or try to incapacitate him. afterwards he knew there was likely someone dying in his basement and didnt even bother to call the police.
how exactly is that still self defense?
and even in a case of self defense, killing an ordinary burglar isnt something to celebrate. its not like he just stopped hannibal lecter...

It's self defense because the intruder was in the guys home. Period. If you can't feel secure in your home, where can you feel secure? Again, one second of delay could cost you your life. After the guy kicked down the door, he could have easily pulled a pistol and shot the old man.

Warning shot? Attempt to incapacitate him? This isn't the movies.

If the guy wasn't inside someone else's home, he would still be alive. It's that simple.

You're right, it's no reason to celebrate, but the old man was justified to use lethal force.

I agree. Fornit, in real life things happen way quicker than in the movies. Hannibal Lector? Ordinary burglar? Doesn't matter. A threat is a threat. Does the guy need to want to eat your liver before you consider him a danger?
963  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] Raspberry Pi on: September 08, 2012, 03:07:56 PM
Raspberry Pi (Model B) in original packaging.

Originally pre-ordered from newark, just recently got it. I'm pretty busy with a lot of project right now, and don't really have time to play around with it, so I figured I'd see if there's any interest. I originally paid $35 + $12 shipping.

Asking 5 BTC.
That's MORE than you originally paid AND it's used! Just get the fuck out of here, now.

Is there a specific need to be this offensive? You wouldn't talk like this if you were dealing with this guy face to face.

I vote for that we should suction out unwilling people's brain and install a raspberry pi running a bitcoin wallet. With USB port located in da left ear.
966  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: what happens if receiving wallet is disconnected ? on: September 07, 2012, 06:15:24 PM
The wallet will continue to receive transactions at its designated address whether its online, or offline for 20 years.

To see the balance, just put the wallet back online. If the blockchain is up to date, it will show the correct balance.

Bitcoins wear out in approximately 5-1/2 years, then they have to be reminted.
968  Economy / Goods / [WTB] Tony Horton's P90X2 BLU-RAY on: September 07, 2012, 02:57:04 PM
Looking to buy the P90X2 series on BLU-RAY.

I'd accept a 720p blu-ray rip instead of the discs, if someone owns the discs and wishes to share with me.  Smiley

Don't want the DVD version, don't ask.

969  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 19 Signs That Israel And Iran Are On The Verge Of War on: September 05, 2012, 03:02:34 PM
Sure looks like the Isrealis are preparing.

Really?  A country that has basically been at war at various levels of hotness for the last 64 years is preparing in case things heat up again?  Who'd have thunk?

Preparing to strike Iran is TOTALLY different from preparing to defend yourself.

The cynicism around here is a foot thick.

Also, what is the point of telling people to stop posting? Last I checked we still had freedom of speech. If you don't like it, move to a banana republic.

I let my 2 5830's mine PPC for over 8 hours and there's nothing in my wallet. This seems like a long time to go without getting any reward. Suggestions?

please post the output of your "ppcoind getinfo" command
I haven't upgraded to 0.2.0 yet but....

EDIT: resized pic

Any luck so far?
upgraded to 0.2.0, let it run for another 9 hours so 17 hrs total and still no luck Sad

Working for me. 17 blocks in 48 hours.

Nice work, thanks Sunny.

Works ok on win7 x64. Coin balance is correct, and solo mining works as expected.

977  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How did people fall for this Pirate scam? on: August 31, 2012, 04:22:14 AM
This was quite clever actually.

It really wasn't. Tired of hearing that. Most reasonable people called bs&t for what it was the very first week it started taking deposits. Long-term members promoted it only for their own profit and should be ostracized for being the scamming trash they are. Brunic is one of the saddest shills on the forums. 2 years from now, with 0 payout, he will still be talking theories on how pirate was legit. The cancer needs chemo, not life support.

Newsflash.

The free market called. Wanted me to let you know its ok, and will be fine.

Why did I trusted pirate? Mmmm, let's see....

-One of the best rated on Bitcoin-OTC
-He's the owner of a service that has probably access to more hashpower than the biggest BTC pools around here.
-Was easily identifiable, more easily than 98% of the people around here
-The probable business model of BTCST is in some topic around here, and is not some crazy dream. It can certainly be made and copied. Search for it though, i'm sick of discussing it.
-Some big guys around here trusted him

Just posting this here again so no one misses it.
978  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How did people fall for this Pirate scam? on: August 30, 2012, 06:47:07 PM

It's simply a shame because I believe the point of bitcoin was to escape greed to a large degree, yet here we are...

Why did you think that?

+1.

What thought process led you to believe that a new currency could eliminate greed?

Bitcoin is designed to circumvent financial oppression, not greed. Greed is a human emotion, can't be solved by humans.
979  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [PPC] PPCoin Released! - First Long-Term Energy-Efficient Crypto-Currency on: August 30, 2012, 06:27:42 AM
The whole "proof of stake" idea could have profound effects on exchanges too--0% trading fees, as they would make money from your coins just sitting in their account Smiley

On that note, would anyone be interested if I made an exchange that used text-based clients instead of a website? I would do it that way for two reasons:
1.) Security (no web fronted that can be abused, I find server-side code is much easier to secure, and I would do manual payouts to increase security perhaps...)
2.) Ease of creation (I find that making a program like that is much more simple than making a website).

It would be secure as there isn't a web front-end to attack, and perhaps I would even do payouts manually to increase security (aka server doesn't even have a link to the wallet, instead works on a store of maybe 10,000 addresses for each currency (Litecoins, Bitcoins, PPCoins)). Or is this just a crazy idea?

I'm not sure what you mean by text based. You mean command line?
980  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: What are the chances of an address collision? and what happens when it does? on: August 29, 2012, 05:52:13 PM
Generating the addresses is one thing....

What if checking the balance for each and every key takes just as long? It might take 10x as long.
