2  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: can anyone explain evaporative cooling system on: November 09, 2014, 01:13:07 AM
Evaporative cooling relies on the amount of energy it takes to excite water from a liquid to a gaseous state.  If you increase the humidity by say, 10% that means you are actively moving water into a gaseous state.  This transition from liquid to gas requires energy, which lowers the temperature of the air.

3  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Did anybody else get a slew of emails from blockchain.info? on: July 25, 2014, 05:02:02 AM
Nope, none here though I have accessed my account today
Could be a phishing attempt by a 3rd party. Tread warily.

If it is there's something I'm missing, all the links are to the real site...

I just got 4 emails from blockchain about wallet backups.  One of the identifiers I recognize, the rest I don't (then again they could be old / unused ones)...  Anybody else get these?

Backup your bitcoin wallet using dropbox. It's free, easy to use and secure.

Haven't opened any new wallets recently...

Never actually used Blockchain.info for storage myself so I can't say.

I would advise the exact opposite and not use Dropbox with your wallets ever, your private keys should never live on a computer that uses the internet unless its encrypted. If you are going to use Dropbox at-least enable 2 factor authentication that helps against key-logging, but even then it someone gets onto your machine they can just grab the wallet. The wallet even though its on Dropbox, is also available on any device when its synced, try unplugging the internet and opening some of your synced files they work just fine. Anyone who gets onto your machine can take your wallet if its on Dropbox, not so secure, but free and easy to use.

I trust dropbox about as much as i trust a homeless person at the bus stop...  I use full disk encryption for my hot wallets (you'd need my laptop, a password for that, an sd card and a password for that as well).  Cold store is always air gapped.

7  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Stay Away From Coinader on: July 15, 2014, 07:47:18 AM
I have only ever deposited GRE on this exchange, it was 1 million to be exact.  History shows I sold some 100k or so, along with at least 200 other trades that could not have possibly been generated from my account as I have ever only had GRE on this exchange and these transactions are not only in coins I have never had on there, but are also dated MANY months before my account was even created on this site!!

I have about 750k GRE still in my account, but it shows I only sold around 100K.  From these small trades, I have .06 BTC now as well.  So ALL I have there is the 750K left in GRE and .06 BTC, BOTH give me errors when trying to withdrawal.

I am cool with technical glitches and think I am very patient guy.......but 4 days of ignoring my attempts to resolve got me pissed!  Obviously this is a small amount of money in the end, but the principal of how they are dealing with the issues is HUGE.

If it were my site we'd have had a phone conversation already.  Sorry to hear this, it's bad for all of us  Sad
8  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: USB stick as cold wallet, one thing... on: July 15, 2014, 07:12:10 AM
I honestly think you're better off with a safety deposit box and some acid free paper.  If someone has unfettered access to that room there are far more valuable things than a bitcoin wallet.

Well that makes a lot more sense!  Grin

Seems a little high to me?  Aren't Zeus miners less than $2k these days?
12  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Miner Development on: July 11, 2014, 08:58:03 PM
I spoke with the professor today. It looks like I might be sending these chips back. Do you, or anyone have a link you can share to find the open source code for the sha algo. Also, maybe there is a link you can share that gives a list of the materials on one of these miners. I found 7" x 11" boards, I think I might not make them USBs. I am still in the planning stage.
Do you think these are good chips to use? Can I not have one of the programmers program the chops? Like I said I am a student trying to gain some experience while in school.
Thank you

Personally I think you'd get a lot more out of using an FPGA.  Otherwise you'll need to buy ASICs from one of the big guys.

OP or people commenting should put something on table ?
OP is putting 20% on table.. and his idea..

someone in this thread is just supposed to help it sounds like...

An idea alone, with no skills, funding or anything else isn't quite worth 20%.
What can you put on the table?

peoples so uptight these or its just me ?

I'm partially responsible here.  Just trying to say that they need to offer more to attract the right talent.  Well funded startups have trouble attracting top talent with 6 figure salaries.
14  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Stay Away From Coinader on: July 11, 2014, 07:43:43 PM
My account is less than a week old, yet the transaction history in MY ACCOUNT goes back a year and shows PAGES of transactions I never made......I have had 2 fricken trades on this exchange yet it shows HUNDREDS.  Interesting how my account can have trading history dating back a year before the damn account was even open........and with many coins I have never heard of, let alone ever had?!

What kind of order were you using?  This sounds lot like a bunch of partial fills.
15  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Need a room for the Chicago Bitcoin conference? One available - 2 beds, 2 bath on: July 09, 2014, 10:24:56 PM
Hope this isn't breaking the rules but I have a couple extra tickets if anyone needs them!

Fine by me as long as everyone realizes these are two separate deals.

Yea -- of course.  Thanks for letting me tag along!
16  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Looking for computer savvy person to partner with me on: July 09, 2014, 09:17:37 PM
You must know something about coding, web development, and internet security.  You don't have to be a great coder or anything like that.  You must have good morals.

I will be giving you 20% stake in all my projects.  Please let me know.  Thanks.

So you have an idea, presumably no funding, and you're only willing to part with 20%?
17  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Miner Development on: July 09, 2014, 08:48:12 PM
I hope this is in the right spot. I am an engineering student and am about to do a project for Student Professional Experience. I am going to develop my own USB miner. I bought these Maxim IC Chips off eBay. The data sheet on the chips can be found here.http://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/pdf/73147/MAXIM/MAX3232CSE.html
I hope these will work. I could use any advice other developers can give me. Also, maybe you could give me a rough idea of what each one will do for me.

Thanks

This looks like an rs-232 chip, how are you planning on doing the hashing?

19  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: data usage by miners on: July 03, 2014, 06:48:26 AM
Hi,

Can you guys please let me know how much data is used while mining using 1ths bitcoin miner or 5-6mhs scrypt miner on a per month basis.

Thanks in Advance!

Like DRG said it's minimal and you can get away with a spotty connection.  I used DSL->wifi->laptop->switch->miners at one point without any loss in productivity.
20  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Can i buy BTC using an internationl credit card? on: July 03, 2014, 04:36:43 AM
Using an international credit card (one that is issued in a country but is accepted in lots of countries), is there somewhere i can buy BTC?

edit: i mean without a middleman, no Paypal etc, i pay with the CC and the person or entity sends me the equivalent in BTC to the address i provide.

Does anybody know if Xapo will work internationally?
