They have outages from time to time but it doesn't last long. Overall, Bitstamp ripple gateway is very reliable.
You are over-due to update that info. My transfer has taken 2.5 almost 3 DAYS, and Sat. morning they said "don't worry we are working on it". BitStamp ripple (BitStamp IOU's for BTC) to BitStamp BTC is DOWN! still down... still down... still down... Did your transaction ever go through? I made one on 3/7/2013 and still have nothing.. support says they are processing the transaction manually.. but I still have nothing Hi, I apologize. Please send me your Transaction ID via PM. What happens if a withdraw is bigger then all available funds in the hot wallet?

I am sorry for your deposits were not processed right away. Unfortunately BitInstant has run out of reserves meaning your accounts couldn't be funded instantly.
Your deposits should get processed shortly as BitInstant has just funded their account.

On the bitcoin widthraw page it says: "Large withdrawals will be processed manually. This process will take up to 24 hours." So how much is "Large" ? http://bitstamp.netDepending on bitcoin price, amounts greater than $20,000 equivalent in bitcoin is considered large bitcoin withdraw. Nejc could be a little more communicative (at least on this forum) but besides that there's absolutely nothing to complain about.
I will try to be more active on this thread. Thank you for pointing out. I hope that Nejc or Charlie provides a "indicator" somewhere ASAP.  I've just sent email to our programmer to add Bitinstant balance parameter to API. Hopefully you will find this useful. |

Tuesday at 11am access to Bitstamp was disrupted due to a DDoS attack. Bitstamp responded by upgrading its DDoS mitigation capabilities and recovered full accessibility at 8pm.
Service has been fully restored and no Bitcoins or client information were ever at risk or lost.
Additionally, to help make up for the inconvenience caused by the service outage, Bitstamp will be providing commission free trading until Sunday 21th.

Bitstamp is very concerned with security and safety of customer funds.
In answer to your questions:
- Bitstamp is using cold storage.
- Bitstamp currently keeps 85% - 90% of bitcoins in cold storage.
- Bitstamp currently has new deposits going to our live wallet. This will change in the near future and new deposits will go directly to cold storage.
- Bitstamp’s offline wallet is installed on a dedicated server that is only turned on when access to the bitcoin client is needed. This server is in a different location than the main server.
- Bitstamp maintains a full reserve of client USD funds and BTC funds.
- Bitstamp maintains a full offsite database backup.
- Bitstamp plans to address the handling of compromises in our forthcoming terms and conditions document.

But so that the terminology is clear.
If I had a Swiss bank account and was sending funds to Bitstamp, I could do a SEPA direct debit but that is in EUR only, right? And then otherwise, from that Swiss bank account I could instead do an international wire, and then send either EUR or USD.
Am I describing the transfer methods correctly?
Yes, SEPA transfers can be done ONLY in EUR currency. If you have Swiss bank account with EUR balance you can transfer via SEPA. Your funds will be then converted to USD on our end and then added to your bitstamp balance. But since Switzerland is only member of SEPA but not EU, transfers are charged with standard international wire fee. You can also send internatonal wire in CHF and we will convert it to USD. So transfers from Switzerland, for instance. They would be SEPA direct debits after the Swiss bank converts to EUR? (which Bitstamp then converts to USD?)
Yes but please note that Switzerland is not full member of SEPA zone so transfers in EUR carry out same fee as international bank wires. We can accept/send in CHF, EUR or USD from/to Switzerland. Hey, It is not a bug. Those stairs probably show our instant trade mechanism. Quote from our FAQ: When you place an instant order, we add an order at the current bid or ask price (depending on the type of the order). If there is not enough bitcoins available at that price, your order will remain open until someone sells or buys additional bitcoins at that price. Our trading engine will then reposition your order every 10 minutes to the current order book offer. Rise in volume is result of large new investor into bitcoin buying at bitstamp. Interesting approach. What would happen to your exchange if Google decided that it wouldn't authenticate your users any more?
I see Arthur already answered pretty nicely. Great thing about google authenticator is that it is free, simple to set up and instantly available to anybody with supported mobile phone. Very nice, Nejc Kodrič !
