381  Economy / Speculation / Bitcoin Price | Healthy pullback on: January 22, 2018, 09:33:43 AM
Bitcoin (BTC) continues to be highly volatile. Having ranged over 30% in the past week, the cryptocurrency was, at one point, down 56% from all time highs. The BTC market cap now stands at US$190 Billion, with just over US$5 Billion traded in the past 24 hours.[1]

Unconfirmed transactions now stand at around 80,000, down from well above 250,000 in late December. The low sat fee/byte transactions remained unconfirmed until they are mined or time out in the network. Most of the high sat fee/byte and high priority transactions are being mined quicker than they are being replaced, so the backlog is decreasing. The current appropriate fee for a guaranteed confirmation within the next 5-10 blocks is around US$5 or less for a typical 250 byte BTC transaction.[2]

Do you think this is a Healthy pullback (like writer Analysis ) OR more crash coming?

Natalya Kaspersky is the co-founder of Kaspersky Labs, a highly reputable cybersecurity firm headquartered in Moscow. She is also currently the CEO of the InfoWatch group of companies. She recently gave a presentation called “Modern technologies – the basis for information and cyber-wars” at the ITMO University in St. Petersburg.

During her presentation, this little bit of information appeared on a slide:

Bitcoin is a project of American intelligence agencies, which was designed to provide quick funding for US, British and Canadian intelligence activities in different countries. [The technology] is ‘privatized,’ just like the Internet, GPS and TOR. In fact, it is dollar 2.0. Its rate is controlled by the owners of exchanges,

384  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Lightning Network Channels on: January 20, 2018, 08:19:12 PM
I have basic information about Lightning Network :
the chains can support the same cryptographic hash function, it is possible to make transactions across blockchains without trust in 3rd party custodians(not broadcast to the blockchain).[1]
people can fund them channels (like fees) which can change constantly.

what will happens if a lot of people fund them channels at the same time?.
Will back to the same problem (high fees)?.
also, creating large payment channels can support decentralization?
385  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-1-19]Bitcoin Had a Strange Week. Does It Matter? on: January 20, 2018, 12:10:54 AM
Bitcoin had a lackluster week, with dramatic drops midweek that made some question the hype cryptocurrencies had generated in the latter months of 2017. And then it started to recover, reminding us how erratic cryptocurrencies are. Reports that regulators may soon come to get tough on the market and evocations of the Great Depression made for a particularly tempestuous week in the already-chaotic world of cryptocurrencies. So what happened—and does it mean anything?

Here’s a look back at how the week unfolded

India has sent tax notices to tens of thousands of people dealing in cryptocurrency after a nationwide survey showed more than $3.5 billion worth of transactions have been conducted over a 17-month period, the income tax department said.

Tech-savvy young investors, real estate players and jewellers are among those invested in bitcoin and other virtual currencies, tax officials told Reuters after gathering data from nine exchanges in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune.

Governments around the world are grappling with how to regulate cryptocurrency trading, and policymakers are expected to discuss the matter at a G20 summit in Argentina in March.

India has issued repeated warnings against digital currency investments, saying these were like "Ponzi schemes" that offer unusually high returns to early investors.

But it has not so far imposed curbs on an industry estimated to be adding 200,000 users in India every month.

387  Economy / Speculation / Bitcoin Price & Further Losses on: January 19, 2018, 01:00:38 PM
The "V" shaped recovery in bitcoin (BTC) from Wednesday's low has stalled below the $12,000 mark in the last 12 hours. Prices on CoinDesk's Bitcoin Price Index (BPI) did rise to $12,045.09 at 15:14 UTC yesterday, before retreating to sub-$11,500 levels by 22:00 UTC.[1]

The slide from the high of $12,045 was extended further to $10,988.79 in Asian hours today. However, bitcoin soon regained poise and rose to an intraday high of $11,808.49 (at 08:44 UTC).[2]

388  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-1-17]Cboe's First Bitcoin Futures Contract Expired Today on: January 18, 2018, 12:39:35 AM
The first bitcoin futures contract listed by Cboe has expired, a move that came amid a turbulent day of trading that saw the cryptocurrency's price drop below $10,000.

First listed in mid-December, the futures had a rocky start but ultimately those platform issues were resolved. The opening day for the contract saw the price climbing above $15,000.

According to data from CNBC, the F8 contract settled at a price of $11,055, a notable development considering that, at one point today, the price of bitcoin slid to as low as $9,199.59, according to CoinDesk's Bitcoin Price Index.

Yet in the period of time after the F8 contract settled, bitcoin's price appears to be reversing the trend it has seen in the past two days. At press time, the BPI is reporting a price of $11,344.66 – a figure that is just several dollars above the day's open.

Cboe data suggests that the market for its G8 contract (set to expire on 2/14) is trading slightly below the market, with the firm's official website reporting a price of $11,220.00.

As for what the future will bring for Cboe's work in the cryptocurrency space, a recent press event covered by Bloomberg suggests that the company may explore products built around other coins – but that is likely to come after more months of work around the futures product.

390  Economy / Economics / Discussion: Over $200 billion wiped off the value of cryptocurrencies why ? on: January 17, 2018, 11:49:40 AM
More than $200 billion has been wiped off the value of global cryptocurrencies at the peak of the recent sell-off, which extended into Wednesday morning.[1]

At around 7 a.m. London time on Tuesday, the total market capitalization or value of every digital coin stood at $653.8 billion, according to data from Coinmarketcap.com, a website that tracks the price of cryptocurrencies by taking into account the prices across different exchanges.[2]

This was when the sell-off began to take hold. As the price of major cryptocurrencies including bitcoin, ethereum and ripple fell sharply, that market cap declined by Tuesday evening to a low of $450.5 billion. The market cap, and the price of some coins recovered slightly from that low, but are still significantly lower.[3]

Bitcoin startup Blockstream has released a micropayment processing system that it claims makes it simpler to build bitcoin apps on top of its Lightning Network.

Called Lightning Charge, the system complements Blockstream’s existing Lightning Network implementation "c-lightning" and is intended to make life easier for developers creating Lightning-powered payments applications, the firm said.

According to a company blog post
"
Quote
Together, these additions make it easy for developers to use c-lightning to create their own, independent web-payment infrastructures.
"
Lightning Charge is written in node.js and its features can be accessed using an API via its JavaScript and PHP libraries, both of which are part of Blockstream's Elements Project.

"Web developers will ... get expanded functionality such as currency conversion, invoice metadata, streaming payment updates, and webhooks," the post states.

392  Economy / Speculation / Bitcoin Back into 11,000$ in 1.5 Hours ($1,300) on: January 16, 2018, 11:50:10 AM
The price of a bitcoin has just tumbled down more than $1,000 in less than 2 hours.
The cryptocurrency opened today's session at $13,585, and reached a high of $13,601 before the sudden tumble at soon after 07:00 UTC that saw the price drop from $13,210 down to $11,850 at 08:30 UTC. That's a fall of $1,360 in just 1.5 hours.[1]

the writer says:  in large part seemingly due to new regulatory efforts to calm the enthusiastic crypto market in South Korea.[2]

393  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-1-16]Bitcoin's Price Just Dropped Over $1,300 in 1.5 Hours on: January 16, 2018, 11:28:19 AM

The price of a bitcoin has just plummeted by over $1,300 in little more than an hour.

Having been on the slide in recent days, in large part seemingly due to new regulatory efforts to calm the enthusiastic crypto market in South Korea, chart analysis had indicated that bitcoin would recover and even return to $15,000 levels today. However, that did not happen.

The cryptocurrency opened today's session at $13,585, and reached a high of $13,601 before the sudden tumble at soon after 07:00 UTC that saw the price drop from $13,210 down to $11,850 at 08:30 UTC. That's a fall of $1,360 in just 1.5 hours.

The drop puts the price of a bitcoin at a month low. Dec. 5 saw bitcoin at a similar level, however, that was when the cryptocurrency was climbing fast on the way to setting a new price record around $20,000, as the launch of bitcoin futures contracts from CME Group and CBOE was being anticipated by the trading community.

394  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-1-15]Researchers find that one person likely drove Bitcoin from $150to $1k on: January 16, 2018, 12:31:05 AM
Researchers Neil Gandal, JT Hamrick, Tyler Moore, and Tali Oberman have written a fascinating paper on Bitcoin price manipulation. Entitled “Price Manipulation in the Bitcoin Ecosystem” and appearing in the recent issue of the Journal of Monetary Economics the paper describes to what degree the Bitcoin ecosystem is controlled by bad actors.

To many it’s been obvious that the Bitcoin markets are, at the very least, being manipulated by one or two big players. “This paper identifies and analyzes the impact of suspicious trading activity on the Mt. Gox Bitcoin currency exchange, in which approximately 600,000 bitcoins (BTC) valued at $188 million were fraudulently acquired,” the researchers wrote. “During both periods, the USD-BTC exchange rate rose by an average of four percent on days when suspicious trades took place, compared to a slight decline on days without suspicious activity. Based on rigorous analysis with extensive robustness checks, the paper demonstrates that the suspicious trading activity likely caused the unprecedented spike in the USD-BTC exchange rate in late 2013, when the rate jumped from around $150 to more than $1,000 in two months.”

395  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Cash After Bull Move Fails on: January 15, 2018, 04:22:39 PM
BCH witnessed an upside break of the congestion last Wednesday, but the follow-through has been anything but encouraging. Contrary to expectations, the cryptocurrency failed to see a sustained move above $2,800 on Thursday.[1]

The price action is referred to as "fakeout" – that is, when prices fail to rally following a bullish breakout and actually drop. A fakeout usually ends up turning the tide in favor of the bears.[2]

Do you think BCH looks good, heavy or panic to sell?

396  Economy / Speculation / Bitcoin [Battles With Regulatory Pressure] on: January 15, 2018, 12:42:42 AM
One factor that has historically laid big blows on Bitcoin has been regulatory stirrings. The announcement by China that it would be banning ICOs and then following that exchanges, sent the market spiraling.[1]

This week, there were similar fears realized - albeit falsely - when the South Korean Ministry of Justice announced independently that they would be banning trading in cryptocurrency. This was done without the consent of the Ministry of Strategy and Justice and other government agencies involved in the South Korean cryptocurrency regulation task force.[2]

In the US, the SEC, which has had a bit of a history in the cryptocurrency space already, is starting to make a lot more noise in its attempt to regulate.[3]

1. Do you think Regulation have the ability to kill off Bitcoin?
2. How will effect in market price?
3. Do you think we need for some parity between the regulators and the digital currency economy?[4]

397  Bitcoin / Press / [2018-1-14]Canada could become the world's bitcoin mining capital on: January 14, 2018, 12:40:27 PM
LONDON — Canada is luring bitcoin mining companies to its shores as China, the current global hub of crypto mining, looks to crackdown on the sector's energy usage.

Several industry sources Business Insider spoke to this week said that bitcoin miners are thinking of moving to Canada after lobbying from the country's energy industry. Quebec specifically has been wooing bitcoin miners in the hopes of boosting local economies.

Reuters reported on Friday that Bitmain, the world's biggest blockchain mining company, is looking at moving operations to Canada and said utility company Hydro Quebec is in talks with around 30 large cryptocurrency miners about potential moves. BTC.Top, another major miner, is also setting up shop in Canada.

"We’ve seen a lot of movement towards Canada," Chris Keshian, the CEO of San Francisco-based Apex Token Fund, a fund of crypto hedge funds, told Business Insider. "The Canadian government is relatively friendly towards cryptocurrencies [and] energy is relatively cheap there."

398  Bitcoin / Press / [2017-01-13] Bitcoin is under threat from hackers - independent on: January 13, 2018, 03:41:30 PM
More and more people are looking to invest in cryptocurrencies as a result of Bitcoin’s recent price surge, but by doing so they could become prime targets for cyber criminals.

Multiple cryptocurrency exchanges have been hacked in the past, resulting in the theft of thousands of Bitcoin – which would be worth millions of dollars today.

What’s more, since Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, if any of your holdings were to leave your wallet, you won’t simply be able to get a refund.

Fortunately, there are steps users can take to protect their Bitcoin.

Security experts recommend storing them offline.

If you purchase Bitcoin through an online exchange and choose to store them there too, your security lies in the hands of whichever service you use. If the exchange is hacked – something that isn’t uncommon – the currency you own could be stolen.

That’s because the exchange will hold users’ private keys, long strings of characters that grant access to people’s cryptocurrency holdings. If a hacker managed to get their hands on a private key, they’d be able to steal the Bitcoin associated with it too.

399  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Is Bitcoin Dying as a Payment Option? on: January 12, 2018, 12:20:30 PM
six months ago companies were looking to integrate Bitcoin as a payment system,  in the fast-paced cryptocurrency ecosystem, things have changed dramatically.

Now, there is a host of companies either turning away from Bitcoin or doing a full U-turn. Microsoft recently announced that after almost three years it would stop accepting Bitcoin. However, it did reserve that position after taking its own steps to: “ensure lower Bitcoin amounts would be redeemable by customers.”

Steam, the gaming platform, also canceled its use of Bitcoin as a payment system in early December last year. Their reasons resonated with the general consensus, citing high fees and incredible volatility as the main issues.[1]

Do you think bitcoin will back to be used as Payment Option or digital gold will be used as an investment?

400  Economy / Speculation / South Korea trading ban on: January 11, 2018, 11:21:01 AM
“There are great concerns regarding virtual currencies and [the] justice ministry is basically preparing a bill to ban cryptocurrency trading through exchanges,” justice minister Park Sang-ki said.[1]
News of the ban follows the raiding of local cryptocurrency exchanges by police and tax authorities over alleged tax evasion, as one of the key nations driving the demand for bitcoin and other virtual currencies attempts a clampdown.[2]

The value of bitcoin plunged 13.5% in the early hours of Thursday after news hit that South Korea is planning to ban cryptocurrency trading.[3]

Do you think the price will lose more?
