1  Bitcoin / Press / 2013-10-09 The Daily Reveille - Opinion: Silk Road Shutdown Demonstrates Failure on: October 10, 2013, 05:57:38 PM
From Jay Meyers' op-ed series "Share the Wealth" in the student newspaper at Louisiana State University: http://www.lsureveille.com/opinion/columnists/opinion-silk-road-shutdown-demonstrates-failure-of-free-markets/article_ffdc3dfe-3144-11e3-9eb7-0019bb30f31a.html

I'm considering writing a formal response, but we should definitely get some comments on there.
2  Bitcoin / Meetups / LinuxCon 2013 NA - New Orleans on: July 25, 2013, 03:19:50 AM
Any other bitcoiners attending LinuxCon in NOLA this year? http://events.linuxfoundation.org/events/linuxcon-north-america

I don't really see any meetups going down in the south except Texas. This could be a good opportunity to get something going for Louisiana. I know the convention isn't Bitcoin centric but I'm sure there will be some interested people there like me. Also, Gabe Newell will be a keynote speaker (just felt like putting that out there).

3  Other / Off-topic / Bitcoins and death on: March 02, 2013, 03:41:33 PM
What will happen when holders of Bitcoin die? Would it be possible to pass down their digital wealth through a will? How could that be securely done? Would we see a massive amount of coins lost forever over time?
4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / [GNU/Linux] Blockchain from external drive on: February 17, 2013, 03:41:49 AM
Hi, I tried to do a search on the forum and didn't find anything. I found this on the wiki but I need some specific confirmation: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet#Linux_2

Bitcoin-qt has become unusable for me because the blockchain will soon exceed the free space on my laptop's small SSD. I have Bitcoin installed from the PPA, so I don't think I can exactly move all of my bitcoin client to the drive. However, if I run this command on GNU/Linux:

Code:
bitcoin-qt -datadir=./[Directory_Name]

1. Will my Bitcoin-qt client permanently refer to the specified location for the blockchain? (aka, I don't need the parameter for every run)
2. What would be the specific location parameters needed to reach a desired folder in my external drive? (preferably absolute, because I don't know from where it would be relative)
3. Should I transfer my entire .bitcoin folder to the external drive and refer to that directory?
4. Will (all of) this be safe to do? (in EVERY possible interpretation of the word safe)
5. Would something horribly bad happen if I started Bitcoin-qt on accident and I didn't have my external drive plugged into the laptop?

6  Other / Politics & Society / I'm shocked on: February 15, 2013, 03:29:08 PM
When I learned about the Russian meteors, I rushed over to this forum.

Needless to say, I am extremely disappointed by the lack of accusations that this is actually a false flag operation by the government or how there is actually a war that is being covered up. Are all our conspiracy theorists sleeping in late? Shouldn't they work on shifts so I can feel better protected from mainstream perceptions of reality? Do they wait until Alex Jones airs so they can get a consensus conspiracy?

11  Other / Politics & Society / Right to Work on: November 18, 2012, 09:18:17 PM
Why do so many self-proclaimed libertarians and leading figures such as Ron Paul support Right to Work laws? It seems to me to be inherently anti-libertarian, and I don't buy the "it results in more individual freedom for workers" argument.

http://communities.washingtontimes.com/neighborhood/reawakening-liberty/2012/oct/22/libertarians-are-not-corporate-apologists/

I think it makes a lot of sense, but do you think this piece will finally convince the "progressives" out there?

14  Other / Politics & Society / "Right to an attorney" on: October 07, 2012, 10:37:32 PM
I was having a casual political conversation yesterday about health care, and on how I don't consider health care a universal right because I don't necessarily believe in a natural right to the labor of others (in this case doctors). Then I was asked, "What about the right to an attorney? Isn't that a right to someone else's labor?" I was effectively stumped by this, especially because it's in the 6th amendment of the United States Constitution. I know this forum has plenty of libertarians/voluntaryists, so I would like to know what you would have said in response to this question.
15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / LTC/USD vs LTC/BTC on: July 22, 2012, 03:33:05 AM
Does anyone have long-term data for the LTC/USD and LTC/BTC exchange rates? I would like to see a graph that compares the two exchange rates over time. I'm basically curious if litecoin is appreciating on it's own compared to the dollar, or if it's because bitcoin went up and thus litecoin went up. Thanks.
16  Other / Off-topic / Bitcoin Balance Beautification! on: July 21, 2012, 09:22:30 PM
I have decided to provide a wonderful new service to the more OCD members of the Bitcoin community: Bitcoin Balance Beautification (BBB).

Bitcoin is blessed with the feature of being divisible to up to eight decimal places. However, over time this may lead to some very ugly balances: 17.47521649 BTC? BARF!

BEAUTIFY THAT BITCOIN BALANCE!

BBB allows you to have sexy, clean, or alliterate Bitcoin Balances.

I can hear You right now:
Quote from: You
Psh, how is that SOCIALIST LOSER HIPPIE going to Beautify my Bitcoin Balance?

It's really quite simple, You.

All you need to do is send those ugly Satoshis, µBitcoins, and mBitcoins to the Official BBB Bitcoin Address:

1L1YtmbzRipWMqgJFfiaG4uisMhQXks3xg
1L1YtmbzRipWMqgJFfiaG4uisMhQXks3xg

But Wait You! There's More!

You don't need to give away that you used to have an ugly balance! BBB is completely anonymous and private. You just need to send the BTC to the BBB Bitcoin Address and then Your Bitcoin Balance is Beautified!

Oh, I can hear You again:
Quote from: You
Psh, sure that's cool, but what's the catch?

Well You, there is no catch!
BBB is FREE, no FEE!

What are You waiting for? Beautify that Bitcoin Balance!

17  Other / Politics & Society / How does ancap deal with an oil spill? on: July 18, 2012, 06:19:14 PM
Let's make a hypothetical. Imagine a completely anarcho-capitalist world. I guess all the oceans and seas have been somehow privatized (how?).

A firm is operating an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico and it explodes.

What happens? Who pays to clean up? Who pays reparations to all of the people affected (e.g. fishermen who just lost their jobs)? Would their be any concern for all of the life destroyed?
18  Other / Off-topic / Can someone criticize my strategy? on: July 17, 2012, 07:26:35 PM
Okay, I am not a gambling person at all, but http://betsofbitco.in/ caught my eye, specifically the bets on U.S. politics (a deep interest of mine.)

There are many bets that involve a straight yes or no on Romney's pick for VP: http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=463 http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=264 http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=291 http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=481 http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=265 http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=371 http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=58 http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=266 http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=267 http://betsofbitco.in/item?id=491

So I was thinking...Would it be profitable to bet against all the options, considering that it is more likely that one person in particular will NOT be chosen? Am I being illogical here?
19  Bitcoin / Project Development / [IDEA] Bitcoin community center on: July 16, 2012, 05:27:55 PM
Hypothetically speaking, if a Bitcoin nerd managed to acquire commercial property (like a former restaurant or phone store) in order to make a bitcoin community center for a city or a town, what would you want in there? Would it focus on bitcoin education? Providing bitcoin services? Or would it just be a specialized internet cafe? What would you do?
20  Other / Off-topic / Personality types on: July 16, 2012, 12:42:30 AM
I'm curious what personality types (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) are common among the Bitcoin community.

I am ISFJ. (http://www.personalitypage.com/ISFJ.html)

I am also curious in which are the most common pairs of personality types among 'best friends' (or spouses). For example, my best friend is ENTP.
