201  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Stablecoins are not stable on: March 18, 2021, 09:57:44 PM
The so called stablecoins are usually paired with the US Dollar. However, true stability should mean that they correlate well with the increase in the cost of living. Thus, calling stablecoin to UST or others is simply not correct.

A true stablecoin would not be linked to USD but to the level of prices in a basket of products in different countries. I am going to dare to say that it should be related to gold, as this metal has traditionally preserved its value (some people argue)

I guess that what I am trying to say is that stability cannot be measured in currency.
202  Economy / Economics / How much can you make by saving and compounding on: March 18, 2021, 07:23:59 PM
One of the best know says of Warren Buffet is "It is not about timing the market, it is about time in the market". What he means that if you let the interest compound over a long period, the results can be amazing.

Independently of the style of investment (crypto, fixed income, variable rent, high yield, ...), it is good to take a look about what compounding can do for you. Please, note that you would need to subtract inflation and that can be big in some countries if you only invest locally.

These are very simple simulations that shows you how far can your saving and investing go. In each one you put an initial amount on an investment and then you add a bit more each year.

For each case, you get the final amount on money you get depending on the average yield that your investment gives you (this not mathematically accurate, but is good enough. For example, the SP500 index in the past usually yields 6% and is considered a quite safe investment. I have calculated for 6%, 12% and 18%. I call this, the boring 6%, the "nice 12%" and the "the gods love me much 18%" average yield a year.

This will give you the graphs and results for 17 years. Why 17? No particular reason Smiley

SIMULATION 1: Initial savings 5000, and you won't add anything else.

As you can see, a final capital of 13.000 is perfectly achievable with a 6% yield, while you can dream of 83.000. This is not bitcoin remember Smiley

SIMULATION 2: Initial savings 1000, and 1000 more a year.

Better results overall, with a basic of 31000 and a dreamy 104 if you catch a great decade of yields.

SIMULATION 3: Initial savings 5000, and 1000 more a year.

Better results overall, with a basic of 42,000 and a dreamy 170,000, this looks like a great option.

Notice that this is not USD specific, so 170,000 may not be "dreamy" in your currency. However, if you think of it, it should not be difficult for the average joe to save 100 dollar or euros or pounds a month in OCDE countries, and the effects on retirement can be noticeable. See a previous post on that here.

203  Economy / Economics / Your pots of money and thinking long term / retirement / life after retirement on: March 17, 2021, 12:23:25 AM
If you are not "rich", that is, you work hard for money a manage to save just some, perhaps nothing from month to month, you should be thinking about how to make sure you can live when old without being a burden for you family or having financial difficulties. If you holdled bitcoin since 10 years ago, you do not need to read any further, just enjoy. For the rest, here are some planning tips.

This is particularly important for Millenials (see graph below), as the rates of return for savings and investments are thought to be in decline.

However, you also want to life a good life - there is only one (unless you are Buddhist) - and you probably want to do things that require money. Striking a balance between these two is a little bit of an art.

How much do you need to saver? Too difficult to say in general. Some speakers and authors will tell you that it should be around 10% of your income, but if you earn little you may not be able to or if you want to retire very early you may need to do some extra effort.

First thing to be clear, you can separate into bags or pots but in reality all your money is the same. Just use this as mind tool.

b) Decide what is the bare minimun you will need each month or year to retire having the basics: a roof over your head, food in the plate and medical care. This is your retirement minimum bag.

- Figure out how much capital (savings) you would need to obtain that monthly income. (e.g. you need 500 USD and you count on having your house paid). That x12 is what you need in a year (e.g. 12000).

- You should count on getting around 4% of your saving as dividend or rental income. To produce 6000 a year that is: 150.000 USD (that's 6000 / .04). That is your bare survival minimum, so you have to save and invest enough to make sure you have it by the time you think you will retire. Savings and investments for that pot have to be super low risk while allowing you to reach that figure. You may think that you will get a pension and that will take care, but I advise you not to count on that. Just make sure you do not depend on someone else for food.

b) Decide what would be a good level of income that would grant you some travelling, leisure or whatever you would like. Let's say that is 1000 a month on top of you bare minimum. That is you wish bag. You can count for this on pension or other income, just halve what you think would be reasonable (e.g. you expect a state or private pension of 1000 per month, count only with 500).

Now you have to figure out how much you would need for that. Again, at 4% would be (12 month x 1000 = 12.000 a year, so capital should be 12.000 / .04 = 300.000 USD. This may seem like quite a bit of money (it is very personal anyway, people have different incomes).

Since you know your goal, you would now setup your saving strategy, but this time you can take part in more risky (yet higher reward) investments. This should help you reach that apparently high figure if you start saving when young.

c) You moon-shot: If you still are able to save more after your two first bags, you can now have your moonshot bag. You can choose any ammount here, and you will invest this in high risk / high paying investments (e.g. crypto). If this goes well, you will retire early and or rich.

All this requires talking about different investment styles and methods. If there is some interest I will later continue the post with ideas on that.

Just as a hint for Millenials:

What to expect from the typical S&P 500 index fund. Current CAPE is high, meaning that standard returns will not be great during the next 10 years (probably)

204  Economy / Gambling discussion / An Indian casino in New York? on: March 16, 2021, 09:48:12 PM
When you think of the Hamptons in USA, you are likely to picture a leafy area, close to the beach with nice uber-houses of the well-to-do and wealthy people of NY. However the sacred land of the Shinnecock Nation lays right around the corner, 90 miles from Manhattan and with an extension of 365 hectare (900 acres if you prefer) and they are about to open a casino by the road.

Gaming is a major source of income for Indians living in reservations and has provided an increase in income for them, however this development is - as it could not be otherwise - controversial due to the opposition of the locals.

The American Gaming Association estimates a positive impact of 100 Billion a year as of today with a constant growth in the past decades.

Have you ever been on an Indian casino? Good experience?

205  Economy / Economics / No Joke - Elon is now "Technoking" & CFO is "Master of Coin" on: March 16, 2021, 01:52:28 PM
As published by BBC, Elon Musk know for his mental and twitterial stability (wink wink), has now decided to crown himself under the title of "Technoking of Tesla". His chief financial officer will now be the "Master of the Coin", just like in GoT.

This would be absolutely normal if they were playing a role game, however this is actually a SEC (Securities and Exchange Commision) filling, so him founding a new dynasty is official. If you are wondering WTF is this about, so is a Tesla investor that has sued Elon for "erratic and unlawful tweets". He is just probably investing in the wrong company anyway.

This guy now holds a decent bag of bitcoin so my take is that these news, and what can be inferred insofar his brain functions, means even more volatility. But don't worry, volatility and inflation are both good... or so they say.

Elon, immersed into his new role? Let the memes games begin.
206  Economy / Economics / Dorsey to donate his 1st Tweet benefits to charity on: March 15, 2021, 07:25:24 PM
Following on my previous post on the auction of a NFT, Dorsey has decided to donate all the money for income support across a number of cities.

Quote
Twitter boss Jack Dorsey has donated $15m (£11.2m) to fund universal basic income programmes in the US. The donation, his second in support of the initiative, will help cities send cheques to more than 1,500 families.

While I am not surprised (why would Dorsey try to make money in such a way for himself?), and I am sure it will help many families, I find contradictory that the managers of companies that scrap the las bit of the tax law and setup complex structures in fiscal heavens, then decide to "give back" in such a publicly notorious way. It is just and exercise of PR and it is lame.

208  Local / Español (Spanish) / Atención aviso Pancake bajo un ataque DNS on: March 15, 2021, 04:24:22 PM
Literal del twitter.

EDITADO

In that case, being a very minor DEX with low volumes, el hacker Elliott Gunton obtuvo el equivalente aproximado a 269.000 USD.

209  Economy / Gambling discussion / Prediction markets Augur on: March 15, 2021, 10:53:35 AM
I just remembered that there was an specific project (Augur?) with alt-coins that intended to make a platform for "prediction markets".

Quote
A market is, in essence, just a group of people (or robots) buying and selling things. This can be physical goods as in a grocery store, services as in Uber, or financial assets as in the stock market.

I wonder if any of you has had any experience using the platform or the token and how the results may vary depending on the general alt-coin market, that is, even if winning a bet will actually give you a decent result if the value of the coin drops in that market cycle.

210  Economy / Economics / Tech companies no longer friends (II) Google & Microsoft on: March 14, 2021, 11:31:59 PM
On a previous post , I spoke about Google and Facebook having a row with Apple due to the segmentation limits that Apple is implementing.

Apple has its own problems due to the extortionate (IMO) rates that it charges for any payment done in Appstore applications. This does not only apply to the purchase in an app, but also to any in-app purchase. EPIC games, quite a giant on the field, filled a suit on regards to this practice.

Quote
Epic implemented changes in Fortnite intentionally on August 13, 2020, to bypass the App Store payment system, prompting Apple to block the game from the App Store and leading to Epic filing its lawsuit.

Google announced that they will no longer support third party cookies., which puts them at odds with most of the independent add analytic and serving services.

The row is notoriously public now between Microsoft and Google. Nowadays, internet adds are a must for most business. And nowadays, there are very limited alternatives to Google. Microsoft is arguing that Google has a monopolistic control of on-line advertisements and they have also applauded the move by Australia on regards to having Google and Facebook pay the media outlets and to implement something similar in the US..

It seems cynic that Microsoft, who abused and still abuses a dominant position to channel through Windows their apps and cloud services, are now complaining that someone else has the upper hand on the on-line add market, yet the gauntlet has been thrown in the political arena in US, up to the point that
Quote
Microsoft exec will target Google's hold over news before Congress
, thus on a direct attempt to hurt his rival in the search add space.

It seems that all big tech have reached the point in which they need to grow into each other spaces an a times comes in which the future - dystopic maybe? - is going to be shaped for the street guy internet user.

211  Local / Primeros pasos y ayuda / Como se gana "trust" on: March 14, 2021, 05:48:36 PM

Algunas ideas?
212  Other / Serious discussion / It has been a ride - the bitcoin price infographed (100 bitcoin buys...) on: March 14, 2021, 12:43:34 AM
Can 14-odd years be called history? Perhaps, but in any case it feel a bit like so due to the speed of the expansion of Cryptocurrencies. I felt like doing something to celebrate this non-birthday party, so there you go:

213  Economy / Gambling discussion / Play fewer hands to earn more strategy - Poker on: March 12, 2021, 05:24:07 PM
I just read some playing advise regarding Texas- hold'em. The blog says that to stand a better chance to win you should bluff very little times and only go ahead with hands in which you have a good starting combination such as:

Quote
there are only five hands that are considered "premium."
AA
KK
QQ
AK (Suited)
JJ

If you follow this strategy, you would play very little hands, which may get a bit boring. However, the strategy can be extended to play more hands to the "top 15"

Quote
AA
KK
QQ
AK (suited)
JJ
1010
AQ (suited)
AJ (suited)
AK (off suit)
KQ (suited)
A10 (suited)
KJ (suited)
AQ (off suit)
99
JQ (suited)

Has anyone tried an strategy of limiting the hands? How didi it go?
214  Economy / Economics / Crypto Art record! 69M for a Beeple on: March 12, 2021, 12:23:02 PM
A digital piece by Beeple is selling for 69M USD according to The Japan Times, The Verge and other, at Christie's.

This follows a trend of increased prices for NFTs that are becoming an alternative asset of choice for the wealthy willing to invest in art with all the advantages of blockchain technology (easy to transfer, authenticity without doubt, proof of ownership,..)

Quote
The record-smashing NFT sale comes after months of increasingly valuable auctions. In October, Winkelmann sold his first series of NFTs, with a pair going for $66,666.66 each. In December, he sold a series of works for $3.5 million total. And last month, one of the NFTs that originally sold for $66,666.66 was resold for $6.6 million.

217  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Fixed Staking and unblocked Staking in Binance on: March 12, 2021, 09:08:10 AM
Staking is an alternative to ear "interest" on you cryptos. Fixed Staking is similar to a fixed time cash deposit, you will get at the end the coins or tokens you staked plus the interests. You can stake from 15 days to 90 days. If you choose unblocked staking you will get full flexibility, although yields tend to be lower.

You can do that with around 50 different coins, see here for further information.

This is part of the new wave of "DeFi" that is becoming more popular, as PoS protocols and tokens are developed. Perhaps Ethereum dominance can be one day challenged by these, as it is moving too slowly.

Would you be willing to stake? Do you know that there are some technical risks?
