121  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] Antminer S3 470+ GH on: December 17, 2014, 03:47:26 PM
Great performer, speed ssh adjustable, NO nonsensical later firmware-rock solid as is.
Get in on paycoin rush (great payouts from westhash/nicehash) before it's ended.
Price-0.65BTC and you pay for shipping.
122  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Mining and electronics hybrid? on: December 11, 2014, 11:02:06 PM
Bitfury CEO suggests that hybrid products (electronics WITH mining) are coming.
TV, fridge, stereo, etc. mining bitcoin?
https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/interview-bitfury-ceo-valery-vavilov-new-bitcoin-asic-chips-horizon/

Will this work? Honestly, if I had PC/Mac with extra block that mines bitcoin for the SAME price (or almost the same) as regular PC, it would be awesome.
123  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin 2.0 article in Financial Times on: December 05, 2014, 12:49:15 AM

Bitcoin 2.0 looks to be even more disruptive...registrars, brokers and escrow will be affected
Oh, my...
124  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTB] Antminer S4-batch 2 on: December 03, 2014, 02:07:58 AM
I would like to buy antminer S4 of the 2nd batch (not early 2nd batch that also had many failed PSU).
PM or post if you have one for sale.
Seller has to be in US to minimize shipping charges.
I will pay for escrow-either ognasty or someone else well known.
125  Economy / Speculation / Is this a real competitor or a stillborn idea? on: November 26, 2014, 03:23:13 AM
Garza and his hash/paycoin...
http://blogs.wsj.com/moneybeat/2014/11/25/bitbeat-gaw-miners-to-launch-bitcoin-challenger-paycoin/
I hope that this is nothing, but fear that this is some sort of a 'coin' with minimum credentials at which some on wall street will throw their "pocket" money.
$250 mil for something conjured out of thin air?
126  Economy / Speculation / ebay...LOL on: November 24, 2014, 05:04:21 PM
Quote
Due to a technical issue, some eBay customers may be having difficulty selling on the eBay website. We're working to resolve this issue and apologize for any inconvenience. Please try completing your transaction at a later time. Thank you.

yeah, right, website where you supposed to sell does not allow you to "sell"
I speculate that this has something to do with their eagerness to embrace bitcoin...no?
127  Economy / Digital goods / Many Bitmain S4 coupons ($400 value) and $50 S3+C1 coupons to give on: November 19, 2014, 03:55:15 PM
I have 17 S3, 19C1 and 57 S4 coupons.
S4 coupon(s) will go for 0.02BTC ($7 for $400 savings ea), but if you want many, even less per each.
S3 coupon(s) will go for 0.01BTC (which is ~$3.5, but saves $50 ea), if you want all-also even less, make an offer.
Small BTC amounts are just a donation for my time processing your requests.
Same with C1 coupons.

PM if you want any and your offer, BTC only.
128  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] antminer S3 >=470GH on: November 16, 2014, 07:52:38 PM
I have a great batch 5 antminer S3 performing stably at above 470GH (usually 473-478Gh), selling for 0.5BTC (NEW PRICE; current value ~$188), compared with Bitmain $219 w/coupon for only 453GH guaranteed. Shipping to continental US only, please do not give me lowball offers, price is fixed and could change very little and only if you want to pay for shipping.
129  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / The mining rat race on: November 16, 2014, 05:03:49 PM
In january 2013 first ASIC-based miners had arrived.
You would be surprised to learn that they were mining 18-20 BTC a day (~$240/day with BTC at $12-14).
See
http://bitcoinmagazine.com/3231/working-avalon-asic-confirmed/

Since then the network hashing speed increased X13180 fold, but bitcoin price recently stagnated or declined. In fact, network speed increased 60-fold while price decreased at least twofold in the last 11-12 mo, putting a huge strain on profitability. Eight months ago a lowly cheap antminer S1 was producing MORE BTC than expensive and efficient (relatively) spondoolies SP-30 machine does right now, but S1 cost ~$700 last March and Sp-30 ~$3800 this summer and early fall. My point is that mining efficiency declined while miner prices stayed very high.

Right now, even the most productive and efficient machines DO NOT produce even the amount of bitcoin that is equal to their cost in bitcoins over their expected lifespan.
It means, that measured in bitcoin, they are inherently unprofitable to run, even with low electricity cost.
I expect that, if stagnation in price continues, many miners who try to run a profitable operation will withdraw, which would make the network much more centralized and vulnerable. Only newcomers and large mines will remain.

I wonder if in a couple of years mining will produce just a few bits (literally) per month-who would even do it?
The "mining for bitcoin reward" model seems broken to me if rewards are miniscule and getting smaller (in $$) all the time with average miner right now clearly subsidizing both the miner manufacturers and network as a whole. Instead of getting some rewards, miners are currently making a DONATION to multiple parties. I think that this is the opposite of what Satoshi envisioned.

130  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin units re-branding during ISO submission on: October 29, 2014, 08:37:17 PM
Upon other variants, there is a persistent and popular proposal to call [100 satoshi]=base unit (depicted either as XBT or XBI).
This solves the decimals problem (inability of the majority to easily estimate value after two decimals plus accounting software compatibility)
The argument was made that if you call these units "bitcoin", then people will be confused, but if you call them 'bits", then many would disagree.
How about the following classification scheme for units:
call:
1BTC a "Megabit" or simply "Mega" in jargon. Megabit will not be a part of ISO, but could be used in day-to-day txs.
[100 satoshis]=XBT or XBI=bit

All small purchases will be depicted as in this example: gum- 1,470.99 XBT/XBI (bits)
large purchases (more than current BTC) would be called in megabits
House: 1,500 Megabits (instead of 1,500,000,000 bits). This would ensure ease of use.

BTC (depicted as such) will be a historical (not ISO) unit, which will be fine to use in wallets, etc.

131  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Mining bitcoin as a service to humanity on: October 26, 2014, 07:54:21 PM
21mil/7 bil=0.03 BTC/each person on Earth

In a best case scenario (bitcoin becomes ubiquitous form of currency, accepted everywhere)...
If you mined 3BTC, you provided bitcoin for the future use of 100 people.
If you mined 30BTC-you provided this currency for use of future 1000 people (on average).

Well, even if we lose some money right now, it is OK in a big picture.

Plant a tree, write a book, father a son/daughter...mine a bitcoin.
132  Economy / Speculation / Finding BTC bottom on: October 23, 2014, 08:02:15 PM
It is becoming clear that this correction is not finished.
In my opinion, this cycle, which resembles 2011, will bottom only once the highest cost bitcoin mines are driven out of business.
In 2011, market price bottomed just before hashing rate had finished its 50% decline.
Since it will take some time and duration for this decline to manifest itself, I predict that it (price bottom) will happen in ~3-4 mo, or even later because large scale miners would have some operational inertia.

As indicative of this, hashing rate increases are slowing to a crawl, but we need at least about ~50% difficulty decrease, which will be achieved if we slowly decline to somewhere between $72 and $240. $72 is somewhat extreme and would correspond to the same decline %%-wise as in 2011, but $240 is quite realistic and would be extremely painful if it will occur slowly.

Having said that, I am not selling my BTC yet because timing this process exactly is beyond my trading abilities.
133  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] 3X antminer S3 ~0.56 BTC ea (see details) plus bonus on: October 22, 2014, 10:45:53 PM
I have three Bitmain antminer S3 (B1, 2, 5) for sale. Very good (stable performers).
I would prefer to sell all three at once , but can sell individually as well (0.51 BTC+0.57 BTC+0.61 BTC). Total speed ~1,354 GH or ~451Gh/ea on average for all three.
Price: EDIT 1.69 BTC or 0.56 BTC ea 1.78 BTC for all three. I will ship in the original package at standard speed (FEDEX ground or USPS). If you want expedited, then you pay for it.
Compare with new Bitmain for 0.71 BTC ea (including shipment to US) for 453Gh; I will not consider lowball offers.
I will ship to US only.
EDIT: I will throw in a bonus-for each purchased miner I will transfer to purchaser four free antminer S3+ coupons (0.035 BTC ea, expiring 11/13), so up to 12 coupons (0.42 BTC value)
134  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / A difference of opinions at the Bitcoin Foundation regarding the XBT proposal? on: October 21, 2014, 08:11:18 PM
First of all,

1. Mr. Matonis talks like he gives everybody else a dictat on how XBT has to to be calculated.
http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-needs-iso-certified-currency-code/

Quote
One XBT unit as listed and recorded within ISO 4217 would have eight subunits or decimal places to the right of the decimal point. The rationale for this is that a neutral global default for bitcoin around the world cannot deviate from the unit's representation on the block chain and the bitcoin integer in the core protocol is not changing. One bitcoin on the block chain must equal one bitcoin in the formal standards world or else processing errors would be potentially catastrophic.

Then, perhaps, the core protocol should change so XBT=100 satoshi. There is NOTHING catastrophic about this change. Mr. Matonis is NOT a computer programmer and is prone to gross exaggeration here, I believe.

Why make this change? Because it would make bitcoin much easier to handle as it will incorporate satoshi(s) as two digits post period (which is familiar to EVERYONE).

2. Mr. Matonis writings are also in clear contradiction with the Bitcoin Foundation press release of October 7, 2014.
https://bitcoinfoundation.org/press-releases/press-release-october-7-2014-bitcoin-foundation-financial-standards-working-group-leads-the-way-for-mainstream-bitcoin-adoption-2/
I quote:

Quote
The working group will deploy a consensus based process for reaching an agreement for the official currency symbol. In addition, the working group will recommend Bitcoin subunits. In a currency, there is usually a main unit (base), and a subunit that is a fraction of the main unit. Currencies today operate with two decimal spaces to the right ($1.00). In Bitcoin, there are currently eight so one could theoretically pay you 0.00000001 or one hundred-millionth of a Bitcoin. Not only is this confusing for consumers, it does not fit in existing systems and software for accounting practices.

Conclusion: What Mr. Matonis has released on 10/21 is in clear contradiction with the prior Press-release of the Bitcoin Foundation.

Suggestion: making XBT equal 100 satoshi is an elegant solution. What would be a colloquial name for XBT: market participants would decide whether to call these units bits, bitcoins (again, but not BTC) or finney (in honor of Hal Finney).
135  Economy / Digital goods / [WTS] up to 35 ANTMINER S3+ coupons on: October 16, 2014, 09:20:21 PM
Make a reasonable offer, preferably for all.
136  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Home mining turned out to be short lived on: October 13, 2014, 08:50:46 PM
I am amazed how short-lived "at home" bitcoin mining turned out to be (EDIT: ASIC-based).
First high speed Jupiters were introduced about a year ago, and now it is essentially over.
Even best machines don't produce enough to justify a new machine purchase, unless you are a hobbyist who just like to tinker with the hardware.
Mining 'in the cloud' is out of the question because you can simply buy BTC instead.
137  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin past and future (TIC) on: August 11, 2014, 08:09:10 PM
Consider Fermi's paradox-there should be tens of millions of civilizations in Milky way galaxy alone, yet we have no indication of such civilizations ever existing in the past or today. In particular, some stars in Sun's category (G) and slightly dimmer (K) had existed continuously since 4 billion years BEFORE solar system was born, and we now know that some of the planets around such systems are similar in size and density to Earth.

Consider that bitcoin has a mysterious origin that seemed to bypass everything that was established beforehand. Bitcoin is like invention of the wheel, it had to come up all at once, or never.

Consider that one of the theories of the Great silence (Fermi's paradox) is that there is a Great Filter, which NO civilization has bypassed yet. It is possible that the Great Filter is either behind us (good) or ahead of us (we are doomed).

Consider that either debt-based financial system that is prone to self-desruction OR Bitcoin constitute a Great Filter for further development of our civiliztion.

If financial system is the Great Filter, I would posit, then it would indicate that Bitcoin-like technology NEVER appeared elsewhere or was defeated/circumvented by the debt-based systems. A glimpse of exactly how debt-based system future plays out was already shown in 2008. All you need is another episode, and it's over.

If Bitcoin is the Great Filter, which is less likely in my opinion, then we will see how it will play out in the next 100 years or so. A remote possibility: maybe one of the gigantic Bitfury datacenters will develop self-organization and proceed to accommodate more and more resources toward bitcoin related calculations, shorting the development of civilization as we know it going forward. This is even less likely scenario, in my opinion.
138  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / [Split] Bitcoin 2.0? on: August 09, 2014, 04:38:15 PM
Regarding the future of bitcoin...

Does anybody here think that some bitcoin 2.0 will replace bitcoin as the most prominent crypto?
The analogy would be Yahoo vs Google for search and then the position to be a #1 Internet powerhouse.
In 2000 Google was just a single page with a search line (although working great even then) while Yahoo was a $150-200 bil behemoth.
Comes Monero (XMR)...
What would be the chance that Monero replaces BTC eventually as the best coin? 1%, 10%, 70%?
The wallet/account that Monero dev showed yesterday looked awesome.
Disclosure: I started buying XMR, but not sure what % to allocate to it vs BTC
139  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTB] Spondoolies SP-30 from August Group buy on: August 06, 2014, 03:04:54 PM
Preferably the unit that was bought with 10% discount ($4495).
140  Economy / Digital goods / [WTS] Antminer S3 coupons (0.075BTC value) for 0.05775 BTC each on: July 24, 2014, 10:48:50 PM
Firm price, four available. For four coupons you'll get the benefit of $41.75 and I will recoup my cost.
You send me BTC, I release the coupon to bitmain ID after ~7 confirmations.
