61  Other / Politics & Society / Why some countries are lucky and some appears to be less so on: April 16, 2016, 07:32:45 PM
Check out our neighbor to the north: not only this guy knows math, he is also better looking and has a hot wife!
Is this the climate effects or what?
Compare this:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3543380/Not-just-pretty-face-Justin-Trudeau-stuns-room-reporters-scientists-perfect-answer-quantum-computing-question.html

with what we have...don't even want to post THAT...too embarrassing on both sides of the political spectrum.

63  Economy / Speculation / possible effects of Satoshi revelation (if true) on: April 08, 2016, 11:37:21 PM
http://www.mirror.co.uk/tech/mysterious-billionaire-inventor-bitcoin-could-7715752

the bottom line is that it was possibly three people, two are already dead and only one guy remains, Craig Wright, an Australian academic.

Quote
A source [might be J Matonis, who is specifically named at the end of the article] with close ties to the cryptograpy [sic!] community and telecoms industry told The Mirror that the story had already been sent to select media under an embargo which lifts this weekend.

Our source claimed: "The man behind Bitcoin has given the story to a television company and a newspaper.

"The creator of this currency wants to take control of his invention."
...
One of these men was purportedly a celebrated British mathematician who learned his trade as part of the World War II code-breaking team at Bletchley Park.

The other is an American tech security expert who died at a relatively young age just months before the British maths genius passed away himself.

However, these claims have proved highly controversial and remain unsubstantiated, so we have decided not to publish the two men's names.

Not sure who they refer to as celebrated British mathematician.
American was described before, but I don't remember his last name exactly (Klurman?)

I think if C. Wright is the guy, bitcoin will take a 10-20% hit initially.
i am also not sure how relevant it is in the long run.
So, he has 1 mil coins, a lot, of course, but not the majority.
He is probably eager to sell them to banks or funds, slowly.
Not sure what the result would be.
Certainly, having no input into 6 years of development, how much influence he could bear?
64  Economy / Computer hardware / [SOLD] 4X280x GPU mining rig (complete) on: April 03, 2016, 07:07:35 PM
4 MSI 280X GPU cards
Asrock 970A-G/3.1 motherboard AM3+/AM3, supports up to 220W CPU and a total of four GPUs
8gb Ballistix memory stick (1)
240 gb Crucial ssd
2 USB powered risers 1X to 16X PCIe
DVD reader, writer (optional, remove $10 if you don't want it)
Choice of processors: Sempron 145 (OK if just mine) or FX4350 (better if you want to run a geth node for running solo or just supporting the network)
Linux 14.0.4 preloaded on ssd; geth is current (synchronized), ethminer and qtminer installed
Basically, just replace my wallet id in qtminer string (provided as a text file on desktop) with yours, connect to internet with ethernet cable, and you will be running in no time
Four 280X cards require at least 1000W PSU (I use my favorite EVGA 1300, but you can use something else).
If you absolutely need it, I can add that EVGA (used for a month or two) for extra $140, shipped to US, but prefer to keep it for now.

Total production of ethereum at least 80-81 Mh/s as is (without optimization); you could probably get up to 84-88mh/s from it with optimization, but I don't guarantee it.

Currently 81 mh/s produces ~$490/mo
http://ethereum-mining-calculator.com/

Price (without PSU):
$1020 +shipping (with Sempron 145)
$1090 +shipping (with FX4350)

Will ship to US or Canada from 77025
I will NOT ship to EU or anywhere else because of too much hassle
Payment in either btc or eth according to price at the moment of the deal.

The deal is take it or leave it; I already put in a fair price for everything and can simply continue to mine at $490/mo.
cause for selling: it is in my office and in order for cards to be cool (73C), i have to run fans at 90%, which makes a humming noise at ~59-60dB, which is distracting in the office, but totally OK elsewhere.

68  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] Raspberry Pi Zero mining setups with accessories on: March 02, 2016, 06:41:42 AM
Two kits are available (just one or another):

Basic ($59 in bitcoin, shipped within continental US as priority mail):

pi zero
mini HDMI to HDMI adapter
micro usb to USB adapter
5V 2A pi-compatible power supply (checked to work)
usb-to-ethernet adapter (Kanex)
8gb microhd card with Noobs and cgminer-gekko-rev2 installed

Extended ($109 in bitcoin, shipped to US; shipping cost more here because of the box size):

Basic package  plus
Plugable usb 2.0 7 slot 60w powered hub with each slot capable of at least 1.4A
Four port non powered usb 2.0 hub (Sabrent)

Explanation: pi zero does not have hdmi, usb and ethernet, just micro usb and mini hdmi.
nonpowered hub is needed for ethernet to usb, mouse, keybord and powered hub connections.
you connect sabrent to pi, then connect powered hub to sabrent

I don't have to sell, just decided to do some spring cleaning.
the only thing that is missing to do some USB bitcoin (or SHA-256 alt) stick mining is the stick miner itself (Gekkoscience-available from retailers)
Arduino does not have usb-to-ethernet adapter in comparison with the basic package.
69  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTB] MSI HD 7950 card(s) 3gb OC edition on: February 23, 2016, 10:06:48 PM
I just need a card or cards, no box needed (fine if you have it), but card has to be functioning exactly as it supposed to.
Best-few weeks, months to a year old.
If you have it for sale, PM your price or post it here.
70  Economy / Computer hardware / [SOLD] three Gekkoscience mining sticks with accessories PLUS free S7 coupons on: February 23, 2016, 06:40:30 PM
TL;DR: up to three USB bitcoin mining sticks for sale (from Gekkoscience=sidehack&novak) with accessories
For 48-72 hours-EXTRA BONUS-antminer S7 0.05 BTC coupons (value ~$21.7 ea, valid until 3/2/2016)

Details:

all sticks would be sold with accessories, unless you want to pay $100 for all three sticks, shipped to US.
i will give discounts for accessories, so price should look better with accessories included.
Shipping to US is included as well.

Package #1 (basic)-just three sticks plus one free S7 coupon -you pay $100 in bitcoin, shipping is included

Package #2 (extended A)- three sticks plus 10 slot Anker usb 3.0 70w powered hub (works on windows and Linux PC) plus two free S7 coupons-$130, shipped to continental US. Could sell less than three sticks with price adjusted accordingly.

Package #3 (extended S)-three sticks plus 7 slot Superbpag usb 3.0 60w powered hub (works on both rasp pi and PC) plus two free S7 coupons- $130

Package #4 (extended P)-same, but with 7 slot Plugable usb 2.0 60W powered hub (each slot can handle 1.4A, works on both pi and PC) plus two free S7 coupons-$130

Package #5 (Mini)-one gekkoscience usb miner plus any one of the powered hubs described above plus two free S7 coupons -$85 shipped to US.

Additional items that could be added to any package: raspberry pi zero with adapters and 8gb microhd card w/Noobs and cgminer-gekko-rev2 installed (inquire re price depending on which adapters you need); Y-cables with f-f adapters (these are needed for hard overclocking), they basically double your current ($6 for ea 3A Y-cable with f-f adapter); Arctic usb fan (only one available, $12)

All sticks are fine and I can adjust voltage according to your wishes within allowed parameters.
These sticks are currently set up to mine at 325 (~17.9-18 Gh/s ea)-for this you need either a good usb 2.0 powered hub (like Plugable) or pi-compatible usb 3.0 powered hub (Superbpag) and provide some airflow. Anker usb 3.0 powered hub works on Windows or Linux PC, but not on pi.

Payment-bitcoin; Paypal would be considered on an individual basis (at my discretion and only from members with history here).

EDIT: Just for comparison: Amazon-$59.94/stick (shipped), holybitcoin- $39.97 (out of stock), bitcoinware.net (Canada)-60 CAD (~44.4 USD) in March
71  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] pi zero with mining accessories and optional gekkoscience sticks on: February 19, 2016, 04:33:52 PM
For sale:

pi zero with the following accessories:
Canakit 5V/2.5 A power supply
Kanex usb to ethernet adapter (since pi zero has no ethernet plug)
microusb to usb adapter
microhdmi to hdmi adapter

option 1:

4 port sabrent unpowered hub (to connect Kanex, powered usb hub and keyboard; unfortunately, only three ports work, so mouse will have to be connected to powered hub)-this is an optional item and you can get it yourself on amazon for $6.99

option 2:
a choice between Plugable usb 2.0 powered hub (7 ports, 60V) for $35-this one works with pi zero and has high amperage per slot-I run three sticks at 325 on it.
http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-SuperSpeed-Charging-Adapter-Support/dp/B00RM5OF70
OR
Anker 3.0 hub (7+3 ports, 70V) for $35 (this one does not work with pi zero, but works connected to PC)-also with high amperage slots

Option 3:

In addition, I can sell one to three gekkoscience sticks in good order (hashing nicely) for $25 each. Will give small discount for all three.

basic pi zero with accessories- $56
Option 1- $5 extra
Option 2-$35 extra
so pi basics+option 1+option 2=$96
Option 3-$25/gekkoscience stick

to run sticks you would need to procure:
a. micro HD card with noobs or install noobs on it yourself and
b. ethernet cable (cat5 or 5e) to connect to router
c. hdmi cable-cheap at amazon

Shipping to continental US only for $7 extra
Payment in bitcoin; paypal might be accepted at my choosing for very senior members with ample supply of green trust

I will not sell sticks without at least pi zero with accessories, but I can sell pi zero +/- accessories without gekkoscience sticks: basic set plus minus option(s).
prices are already discounted (see amazon link price vs mine)  and final.
72  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] seven S7 coupons on: February 17, 2016, 08:37:06 PM
Selling seven 0.05 BTC S7 coupons expiring 3/2/2016
price : 0.01 BTC ea
73  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTT] Intel i3-4130 plus some btc for MSI radeon R9 280X, HD 7950 or HD 7970 on: February 17, 2016, 08:19:25 PM
I would like to trade Intel i3-4130 3.4 ghz processor (fits onto Intel LGA 1150 socket) with or without heat sink and fan (up to you); bought new HP 500-267c computer two weeks ago and now decided to upgrade it to i7-4790, hence a freed processor. Computer is fully functional, so processor is basically new.
I would value i3 at $100 (new is for sale at fleebay and/or Amazon for $130-140).
I would value MSI R9 radeon 280X at $150, HD 7950 at $140 and HD 7970 at $150. ALL have to be in in good order.
I would pay the $40-50 difference in BTC. We cross ship, so no payment for shipping.

TL;DR: if you want a reasonable Intel processor for LGA 1150 Intel motherboard and have extra 280X, HD 7950 or HD 7970 GPU card (I prefer MSI or Sapphire, maybe ASUS and Gigabyte, but not Powercolor, HIS or XFX) plus extra ~$40-50 in btc from me-let's make a deal.
74  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Runaway miner acquisition "syndrome" on: January 29, 2016, 04:15:22 AM
Since this is speculation...I did not want to post it in hardware.
Seriously...people are continually buying miners at an incredible speed, adding 80-100 petahashes (10%) each 12 days or so.
Avalon's at $1100 and S7 at ~$1000 are flying off the shelves.

I understand the need for playing with new tech as well as gambling or just being very optimistic.
However, this can be accomplished with just one or two of each kind.
Beyond that, I cannot grasp the rational thought behind this at this very moment...however, maybe there is a factor that I am not aware of.
Perhaps, people are counting on a halving price bump as if it is a given.

I plug in the numbers and it came out that even at a lower end electricity cost, Avalon and/or S7 is $750-900 in red by May, when, if the current trend continues, they will seize to become profitable at 9c/kwh.

This is just mining without considering other aspects (development) that I am not talking about here.
75  Economy / Speculation / Bubbles, minibubbles or anti-bubbles in 2016? on: December 18, 2015, 06:32:17 PM
I posit that 2015 looks similar to late 2011-2012 period with bottoming out, then rise >100% from the lows.
This might suggest that, similarly to 2013, we might have two bubbles or bubblets in 2016.
Assuming that the scope of increase will be much smaller, one can see ~$2000-3000 bubblet in April-May, followed by a plunge to slightly below $1000 ($800?), followed by a further sharp advance/bubble in late 2016 at maybe $8000-10000.

The anti-bubble scenario might unfold following the first bubblet if the downside momentum during summer of 2016 would be too strong.
In such case, the antibubble can bring us back to $400-500 or even lower.

trading: buy now or hodl, wait for the first peak, sell, reevaluate depending on whether momentum will carry down much below $1000.
76  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Gigantic difficulty jump of the last few days (speculation) on: December 11, 2015, 02:48:26 AM
Possibilities:

1. Bitfury filled up their 100mW center?
2. Spondoolies started deploying their SP50?
3. BW deployed their 14/16 nm machine in house?
4. Some government decided to mine bitcoin en masse (for the heck of it)-could be in combination with #1-3
5. Someone deployed a bitcoin mining quantum computer?
77  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] antminer S7 batch 6 on: December 02, 2015, 02:56:10 PM
For sale: antminer S7 batch 6 (specced at 4.05 TH), see the last post for improved speed

Minimal bid: 4.2 BTC firm price in btc, but in no case less that $1525 if btc price decreased (shipped to US), which is at cost for me.
For Canada, add $25 for shipment.

Miner is in hand, new other (opened box, nothing rattling (no loose sinks), not tested yet).
If you want, I can test it for 24 hr or ship untested as new.
Escrow accepted from senior members with experience (buyer pays).
Newbs and below senior members will have to rely on my trust ( i sold a few miners here with no problems).
78  Economy / Speculation / Bloomberg on cash vs bitcoin on: November 20, 2015, 03:45:28 PM
http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2015-11-20/bitcoin-is-better-than-cash-for-keeping-track-of-terrorists

interesting statistics-cash is used in 85% transactions worldwide and 55% in US.
I think that abolishing cash is misguided.
What they are going to do-issue bank cards to 3 bil who don't have banking?
Lose 85% of transactions worldwide?
At least the author advises to leave bitcoin alone as no stupid t-ist uses it-they use cash and they always used cash or gold.
79  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / can this cause a miner to malfunction? on: November 19, 2015, 03:05:59 PM
Not sure if these nasty programs can load anything, but maybe disrupt your connections/mining while trying to connect to the miner that it would perceive as one of your devices:
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2015/11/beware-of-ads-that-use-inaudible-sound-to-link-your-phone-tv-tablet-and-pc/

80  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTS] antminer S7 batch 4 AND antminer S7 batch 5 on: November 16, 2015, 04:10:28 PM
Potentially for sale:
One antminer S7 batch 4 hashing now
One antminer S7 batch 5 hashing now

Pending bitcoin price minimal $1850 bid for B4, $1950 for B5 (in bitcoin)
FEDEX/UPS ground shipment is included to US

Compare with much higher $ prices on ebay: B4 sold on 11/19 for $2425 (w/shipping) , buy it now 2499-3200.
Therefore, you get nice savings in comparison with ebay if you missed on ordering.
I want to pare down my stash due to family considerations.

I can set you up with an EVGA 1300 PSU plus 2 extra PCIe extenders (total 10 connectors) allowing it to run S7 (for $150 more shipped to US) if needed.
Good PSU(s) is/are critical for S7(batch 1-5) and EVGA fits the bill for smooth running.

I don't have to sell, so please don't bid low.
Cheers
